How is repentance right?VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THICH CHAN TANH.

The Buddha said "In the world there are two most precious classes of people, one is the one who does not make any mistakes, the other is the one who makes mistakes but knows wrong and corrects". More or less, we often make mistakes in life. But recognizing mistakes and correcting them will make us gain the respect of others.

What is penance?

In the Dharma Bao Dan says: "The detective is the money-shield, the penance is too late", that means: Repent first, leave the error later. So to repent in the right way according to the Dharma is to recognize the mistakes that are caused, to repent and to correct them, and to promise not to do these things later.

To repent in the common sense is to apologize. Socially, apologizing is a moral human behavior where they have made a mistake and want to be forgiven by the hurt. Apology is an act taught by parents, the school when we are young, and it is a necessity in life. The sages of the past taught: “If you make a mistake, openly admit it, then find a solution and determination to correct it. The attitude towards such mistakes is a measure of a righteous, honest person who can be trusted and respected by everyone ".

Yet, people are often very shy about apologizing because they are attached to attachment and ego-clinging. Clinging is everything you are right, others are wrong. That is also called conservatism. Ego-attachment is to uphold one's ego. Even though you know your mistake, you won't admit it because of fear of losing your worth, others look down on it. Therefore, for these people, the two words apologize are often heavy and cannot be used. But reality:
That is also the reason why we should repent, apologize when wrong

The meaning of repentance in Buddhism

The Buddha said "Italy leads the dhammas" so "Sin from the mind arises, sin from the mind ceases". We see, our consciousness is the chain pulling wrong actions and words. It also means that all sins are caused by body, speech, and mind. Because we are human beings always dominated by karma and live in ignorance, there are always wrong thoughts and actions that cause harm to everyone around us. Not only children make mistakes, but adults don't often make many mistakes.

However, Buddhism has a further view that the karma we cause is usually not from this life but many lives and many lives in the past, so we always reincarnate in samsara to return the karma created. take according to the law of cause and effect. Therefore, as a person with morality in general and as a Buddhist who understands in particular, repentance is a matter of course. There are benefits of repentance:

Transforming karma, eliminating past / present sins can bring life to life more and more, improve and also bring unthinkable benefits.

This benefit at the time of the Buddha can be seen clearly in the image of King A Xa The, who carried the sin of five rebellions for killing his father. But thanks to Buddhism, the king knew repentance, repented before the Buddha and dispelled anger in his heart. Therefore, King A Xa The then took refuge in the Three Jewels, became a Buddhist at home, practiced the Dharma, and did many good and virtuous actions to transform bad karma.

Eliminate bad habits to prevent new mistakes from arising in the future.

The image of the robbery general of Angulimala No-Brain is proof. Because of misunderstanding and hearing the villain's little urges, Mr. Angulimala, from a respectable aristocratic lineage to a bloodthirsty general, always kills to gain 1000 fingers. When he took 999 fingers, due to good conditions in his previous life, he met the Buddha.

Thanks to the noble compassion and virtue, the Buddha taught and cleared the ignorance present in his thoughts, making him turn his head and become a monk after many years of practice. It can be said that, if the Buddha is not met, if No-Brain does not recognize the error, he will continue to commit fatal crimes.

Bring happiness and happiness to the present life and is the basic condition for reaching the ultimate liberation.

Sinners often feel insecure in life because their conscience ends or experiences unfortunate things later. Therefore, simply repenting sincerely will ease the mind at ease.

How to repent for the right Dharma?

Ordinary people have forms of repenting with wrong views such as: taking blood from animals to give thanks to the gods, offering offerings to pleading guilty, torturing themselves with whips, ... But Buddhism is other. Correct the Dharma in the spirit of contemplating the sins you have created and sincerely repent, improving yourself without repeating that action. This is the Meaning of repentance of Buddhism.

In the Sutras of Hoa Nghiem Duc Samantabhadra Bodhisattva said: "If the sins of sentient beings take form, then all nothingness cannot be contained". Because sin from the heart is born, without form, we have to destroy the sin from the mind which means using the heart respectfully to repent.

Buddhism usually takes the 14th and the 30th of the lunar calendar as the day of penance. At that time, the Buddhists gathered to the temple to recite sutras and prostrate to Hong Danh 108 Buddhas. This is a form of the true Penance rite. However, it does not mean that the prayer and prostration is finished, the pity will be completely eliminated, but this is the means to help people awaken their mistakes and repent.

Lord Buddha to remember the deeds of the Buddhas to follow. Because of recognizing mistakes and taking corrective action, it is each person who self-destructs the bad karma that has been created in daily and past life.
