The Good Sutra (Mangala Sutta) Like this I hear: On one occasion the Blessed One was staying at Sàvatthi, in Jetavana, in the garden of Anathapindika. Then a son of God, when the night was near, with his wonderful color illuminating the whole Jetavana region, went to the Blessed One, after having bowed down to the Blessed One, stood to one side. Standing to one side, that heavenly son addressed the Blessed One with this verse: Celestial Son: Many Sons of Gods and people, Thinking of auspicious omens, Wishing and waiting, A safe way of life, Speak, Lord, Of the supreme good omen. (Buddha said:) Not close to the fool, But close to the wise , Paying homage to the worthy, Is the supreme good omen. Staying in the right place, The merit done in the past, Righteously directing the mind, Is the supreme good omen. Study a lot, good career, Skillful in training and study, Speak well-spoken words, Is the ultimate auspicious. Loving mother and father, Nurturing wife and children. Doing a job without trouble, Is the ultimate good omen. Giving, practicing, following the Dharma, Taking care of relatives, Doing karma without error, Is the ultimate good omen. Cessation, abandoning evil, Conquering passion for wine, In the Dharma, without distraction, Is the supreme good omen. Respectful and humble, Sufficient and grateful, At the right time, hearing the Dharma, Is the supreme good omen. Patience, gentle words, Meeting with ascetics, In due time, discussing the Dharma, Is the supreme good omen. Asceticism and Virtue, Seeing the Noble Truth. Enlightenment: "Nirvana" Is the ultimate auspicious omen. When touching life's affairs The mind is not moved, not sad, Not defilement, peaceful, Is the supreme good omen.
