Makhàdeva Sutta (Makhàdeva sutta)
Like this I hear.
At one time the Blessed One was staying at Mithila, in the forest of Makhadevamba.
Then the Blessed One smiled when he arrived at a place. The venerable Ananda then thought: "What is the cause, what is the cause, that the Blessed One smiles again? Not without reason to make the Blessed One smile." Then the venerable Ananda, putting his robe on one shoulder, bowed to the Blessed One with his hands folded, and said to the Blessed One:
"Venerable sir, what is the cause, what is the cause, why does the Blessed One smile?" Not without reason made the Blessed One smile.
— Once upon a time, Ananda, the king of this Mithila country, called Makhadeva, was a dharma-like king, persevering on the dharma, a great king practicing the Dharma, among brahmins, householders, and towns. People and villagers performed the Uposatha (Bodhisattva) ceremony on the 14th, 15th, and 8th. Then, Ananda, king Makhadeva, after many years, many hundred years, many thousands of years, said to the barber:
"- Barber, when you see gray hair on my head, let me know."
"- Yes, sir, Great King".
O Ananda, the barber obeyed King Makhadeva. Ananda, after many years, many hundreds of years, many thousands of years, the barber saw that King Makhadeva had gray hair on his head, and when he saw this, he said to King Makhadeva:
“– Angels appeared to the King. Gray hair has been seen growing on the head.”
“– So, Barber, pluck out those gray hairs with tweezers, and put them in my hand.”
"- Yes, sir, Great King".
Ananda, the barber obeyed King Makhadeva, and after skillfully pulling out those gray hairs with tweezers, placed them in the hand of King Makhadeva. Then, Ananda, king Makhadeva, after giving the barber a salary as a gift, summoned his firstborn son and said:
“– Beloved Prince, Angels have appeared to me, gray hair has been seen growing on the head. I have enjoyed worldly pleasures, now the time has come to seek heavenly bliss. Come, dear Prince, rule this kingdom. After shaving off hair and beard, putting on the kashāya, we will go forth from the home life, leave home, live without family. And, my dear Prince, when you see gray hair growing on your head, then give the barber a fortune as a gift, after skillfully handing over the country to the firstborn prince, having shaved it off. beard and hair, put on a kashāya, go forth, renounce the family, live without family. This fine tradition was established by me, you must continue to maintain, you do not become the last after me. Dear Prince, as long as the two of you exist, and there is a break in this tradition, whoever breaks it is the ultimate. So, my dear Prince, I say to you: “This fine tradition was established by me, which you must continue to uphold. Don't be the last one after me."
Then, Ananda, king Makhadeva, after giving the barber a hamlet as a gift, after skillfully handing over the country to his firstborn prince, it was in this Makhadeva mango grove, having shaved off his hair and beard, and put on his hair. kashāya, King Makhadeva was ordained.
This position resides, turns one direction, with a mind imbued with loving-kindness; so is the second, so is the third, so is the fourth. Thus throughout the whole world, above and below, all regions, and all boundless, he abides, pervading with a mind imbued with loving-kindness, generous, boundless, without hatred, without anger.
With a mind imbued with compassion…with a mind imbued with joy…with a mind imbued with equanimity… likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth, thus throughout the world, above, below, in breadth, in all regions, and throughout boundless, he abides pervasively with mind imbued with equanimity, generosity, boundless, no hatred, no anger.
But, Ananda, king Makhadeva, eighty-four thousand years, played the prince's game, eighty-four thousand years, reigned as a viceroy; eighty four thousand years, has served as a king; Eighty-four thousand years, it was in this Makhadeva mango grove that, after shaving off his hair and beard, putting on a kashāya, he left home, left home, lived without family, and lived the holy life. This one, after having gathered the four Brahmas, when the body broke up after death, was reborn in the Brahma world.
Then Ananda, son of King Makhadeva, after many years, many hundreds of years, many thousands of years, called the barber:
"- Barber, when you see gray hair on my head, tell me."
"- Yes, sir, Great King".
O Ananda, the barber obeyed the son of King Makhadeva. Ananda, after many years, many hundreds of years, many thousands of years, when the barber saw that there was gray hair on the head of King Makhadeva's son, and when he saw this, he said to Makhadeva's son:

"- Yes, sir, Great King".
Ananda, the barber obeyed King Makhadeva's son, and, having skillfully pulled out those gray hairs with tweezers, placed them in the hand of King Makhadeva's son. Then, Ananda, the son of King Makhadeva, after giving the barber a salary as a gift, he summoned the firstborn prince and said:
“– Beloved Prince, Angels have appeared to me, silver hair has been seen on the head. I have enjoyed worldly pleasures, now the time has come to seek heavenly bliss. Come, dear Prince, rule this kingdom. After shaving off hair and beard, putting on the kashāya, we will go forth from the home life, leave home, live without family. Then, Ananda, the son of King Makhadeva, after giving the barber a salary as a gift, after skillfully handing over the country to his firstborn prince, it was in this mango grove, the son of King Makhadeva, after shaving it off. beard and hair, wearing a kashāya, having left the home life, this position resides, turning in one direction with a mind imbued with loving-kindness; so is the second, likewise, the third, likewise, the fourth. Thus throughout the world, above, below, across, in all regions, and throughout the boundless world, he abides pervasively with a mind imbued with loving-kindness, boundless generosity, without hatred, without anger. With a mind imbued with compassion… With a mind imbued with joy… resting in one direction with a mind imbued with equanimity; so is the second, so is the third, so is the fourth. Thus throughout the world, above and below, in all regions, and throughout the boundless, he abides contentedly with a mind imbued with equanimity, generosity, boundless, without hatred, without anger. But Ananda, son of King Makhadeva eighty-four thousand years, played the prince's game; eighty-four thousand years, reigned as a viceroy; eighty four thousand years, has served as a king; For eighty-four thousand years, it was in this mango grove that the son of King Makhadeva, after shaving off his hair and beard, wearing a kashāya, left home, left home, lived without family, and lived the holy life. This person, after practicing the four Brahma residences, when the body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the Brahma world. Then, Ananda, the sons of King Makhadeva passed on that king, after eighty-four thousand years as a king (Khattaya), it was in this Makhadeva mango grove, having shaved off his hair and beard, and put on a kashāya. , having left home, leaving the family, living without a family, they turned to one direction with a mind imbued with loving-kindness and abiding; so is the second, so is the third, so is the fourth. He has played the game of a prince for eighty-four thousand years, eighty-four thousand years, has reigned as a viceroy; eighty four thousand years, has served as a king; Eighty-four thousand years, it was in this Makhadeva mango grove that, after shaving off his hair and beard, and putting on a kashāya, he left home, left home, lived without family, and lived the holy life. Nemi was the last of those kings, the dharma king like the dharma, persevering on the dhamma, the great king who practiced the Dharma among brahmins, householders, between townspeople and villagers, practiced it. Uposatha festival (Bodhisattva) on the 14th, 15th and 8th.
Long ago, Ananda, when the gods of Tavatimsa sat together at the Sudhamma lecture hall, the following dialogue arose: "Happy are the people of Videha, how good it is for the people of Videha, that King Nemi is a dharma king like the dharma, persevering on the dharma, the great king practices the Dharma among brahmins, householders, between townspeople and villagers. Uposatha (Bodhisattva) ceremony on the 14th, 15th and 8th day”.
Then, Ananda, the Lord Sakka said to the gods of the Thirty-three heavens:
"- Chu Khanh, do you want to see King Nemi?".
“– Heavenly Lord, we want to see King Nemi.”
At that time, King Nemi on the full moon day of the Uposatha festival, had washed his hair, kept the precepts, and was sitting on the palace floor. Then, Ananda, Sakka, like an athlete, stretches out his bent hand, or contracts his outstretched hand; likewise, the Lord of Heaven disappeared among the gods of the Thirty-three, and appeared before King Nemi. Then, Ananda, the Lord Sakka said to King Nemi:
"- Dear Great King, so happy for the United Kingdom, so good for the United Kingdom! Dear Great King, the gods in the heaven of the Thirty-three were sitting in the Good Dharma lecture hall praising Great King and saying: "How happy are the people of Videha... and on the 8th. Dear Great King, the gods in the heaven of the Thirty-three want to see the Great King. Dear United Kingdom, I will send the United Kingdom a chariot with thousands of horses drawn, the United Kingdom should ride that chariot, do not be afraid! "
Hey Ananda, King Nemi silently accepted. Then, Ananda, Sakka God, after learning that King Nemi had accepted the invitation, like an athlete... disappeared and appeared among the gods in the heaven of the Thirty-three.
Then, Ananda, the Lord Sakka called the charioteer Matali and said:
"- Hey, Matali, after winning a chariot with a thousand horses, go to King Nemi and say: "Great King, this is a chariot with a thousand horses, sent by Sakka to the Great King. King, ride the heavens, don't be afraid! “.
“– Yes, Venerable”.
The charioteer Matali obeyed Sakka, the lord of the heavens, and drove a chariot drawn by a thousand horses, went to King Nemi, and said:
"- Dear Great King, this is a chariot with thousands of horses drawn by Heavenly Lord Sakka sent to the United Kingdom. King, ride the heavens, don't be afraid! And my Lord, United Kingdom, I will lead the United Kingdom to go? The way by which evil deeds lead to the feeling of the retribution of evil deeds or the way by which good deeds lead to the feeling of the retribution of good deeds”.
“– Take Me, both ways”.
And, Ananda, the charioteer Matali brought King Nemi to the Sudhamma (Good Dharma) lecture hall. Ananda, Sakka, seeing King Nemi coming from afar, after seeing this, said to King Nemi:
"- Come, Lord Great King; good future, my Lord. Dear Great King, the gods in the heavens of the Thirty-three sat in the Sudhamma lecture hall, praising the Great King as follows: "It's so happy... and on the 8th". Dear Great King, the gods in the heaven of the Thirty-three want to see the Great King. O Great King, rejoice with the power of the gods among the gods."
“– Just now, Venerable. Take me to Mithila, where I will live according to the Dharma among brahmins, householders, and among townspeople and villagers, and observe the precepts on the 14th, 15th, and 8th. ".
Then, Ananda, the Lord Sakka said to the charioteer Matali:
“—O Matali, after having won a chariot drawn by a thousand horses, bring King Nemi back to Mithila.”
“– Yes, Venerable”.
O Ananda, the charioteer Matali obeyed the Lord Sakka, won the chariot drawn by a thousand horses, and brought King Nemi to Mithila.
Here, Ananda, King Nemi lived as dharma among brahmins, householders, and among townspeople and villagers, taking the precepts on the 14th, 15th and 8th.
And, Ananda, after many years, many hundreds of years, many thousands of years; King Nemi called the barber:
“– Hey Barber, when you see gray hair on my head, let me know.”
"- Yes, sir, Great King".
O Ananda, the barber obeyed King Nemi. Ananda, after many years, many hundreds of years, many thousands of years, the barber saw that there was gray hair on King Nemi's head, and when he saw this, he said to King Nemi:
“– Angels appeared to the King. Gray hair has been seen growing on the head.”
“– So, Barber, pluck out those gray hairs with tweezers, and put them in my hand.”
"- Yes, sir, Great King".
Ananda, the barber obeyed King Nemi, and after skillfully pulling out those gray hairs with tweezers, placed them in King Nemi's hand. Then, Ananda, king Nemi, after giving the barber a salary as a gift, summoned his firstborn son and said:
“– Beloved Prince, Angels have appeared to me, gray hair has been seen growing on the head. I have enjoyed worldly pleasures, now the time has come to seek heavenly bliss. Come, dear Prince, rule this kingdom. After shaving off hair and beard, putting on the kashāya, we will go forth from the home life, leave home, live without family. And, my dear Prince, when you see gray hair growing on your head, then give the barber a salary as a gift, after skillfully handing over the country to the firstborn prince, after shaving. give up hair and beard, put on the kashāya, go forth, renounce the family, live without family. This fine tradition was established by me, you must continue to maintain, you do not become the last after me. Dear Prince, as long as the two of you exist, and there is a break in this tradition, whoever breaks it is the ultimate. Dear Prince, I say to you: “This fine tradition was established by me, which you must continue to uphold. Don't be the last one after me."
Then, Ananda, king Nemi, after giving the barber a hamlet as a gift, after skillfully handing the country over to the firstborn Prince, it was in this Makhadeva mango grove, having shaved off his hair and beard, wearing a kashāya, having left the home life, this position resides, turning in one direction with a mind imbued with loving-kindness; so is the second, so is the third, so is the fourth. Thus throughout the world, above, below, across, in all regions, and throughout boundless, he abides, pervading with a mind imbued with loving-kindness, boundless generosity, without hatred, without anger. With a mind imbued with compassion… … With a mind imbued with joy… … abiding in every direction with a mind imbued with equanimity; so is the second, so is the third, so is the fourth. Thus throughout the world, above, below, across, in all regions, and throughout boundless, He abides in pervasiveness with a mind imbued with equanimity, boundless generosity, without hatred, without anger. But, Ananda, king Nemi, eighty-four thousand years, played the prince's game; eighty-four thousand years, reigned as viceroy; eighty four thousand years, has served as a king; Eighty-four thousand years, it was in this Makhadeva mango grove that, after shaving off his hair and beard, and putting on a kashāya, he left home, left home, lived without family, and lived the holy life. This person, after practicing the four Brahma residences, when the body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the Brahma world. having shaved off his hair and beard, put on a kashāya, ordained, renounced his family, lived without family, and lived according to the holy life. This person, after practicing the four Brahma residences, when the body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the Brahma world. having shaved off his hair and beard, put on a kashāya, ordained, renounced his family, lived without family, and lived according to the holy life. This person, after practicing the four Brahma residences, when the body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the Brahma world.
But, Ananda, the son of King Nemi is called Kalarajanaka. This position did not leave home, renounced the family, lived without family. This one broke that fine tradition. This one is their ultimate. You may well think, Ananda: "In those days, King Makhadeva, who established that fine tradition, was another." But, Ananda, don't understand it like that. In those days, I was Makhadeva. I have established that fine tradition. People who came later thought that this fine tradition was established by Me. But this fine tradition, Ananda, does not lead to renunciation, dispassion, cessation, tranquillity, higher wisdom, enlightenment, Nirvana, and what, Ananda, is this fine tradition established by Me, and that tradition leads to equanimity, dispassion, cessation, tranquillity, superior knowledge, enlightenment, nirvana? It is this Noble Eightfold Path, i.e. Right View, Right Thought, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, Right Concentration. This, Ananda, is a fine tradition established by me, and it leads to renunciation, dispassion, cessation, tranquillity, supreme knowledge, enlightenment, and nirvana.
In this regard, Ananda, I say the following: "This fine tradition was established by Me, keep it up. You must not be the last after Me." Ananda, as long as the two of you exist, and there is a break in this tradition, the one who breaks it off, that person is the ultimate. So, Ananda, I say to you: "This fine tradition was established by Me, keep it up. You must not be the last after Me."
Thus the Blessed One preached. Venerable Ananda happily accepted the Blessed One's words.END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).BUDDHIST DHARMA WHEEL GOLDEN MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.24/10/2021.
