August 18, 1966 Battle of Long Tan banner-timeline-battle-of-long-tan The Battle of Long Tan took place on August 18, 1966 in Phuoc Tuy province, South Vietnam, during the Vietnam War. After the attacks on their base at Nui Dat, 108 men of D Company of 6RAR were patrolling the area of Long Tan rubber plantation. Shortly after 4 p.m., they encountered a large force of over 2,000 Viet Cong soldiers who attacked with mortars, rifles, and machine guns. In the pouring rain, Australian troops returned fire with artillery support from Nui Dat base. At 5 p.m., two RAAF Iroquois helicopters flew over the treetops and delivered much-needed ammunition crates. Fierce fighting continued as Viet Cong forces continued to rampage in the light of defeat. Just before 7pm, Australian reinforcements arrived and the enemy vanished as darkness fell. The Battle of Long Tan ended. Both sides managed to evacuate the wounded in the dark, although some of the wounded Australians spent a long and terrifying night on the battlefield while the Viet Cong moved around them. The morning light revealed the full extent of the horror. 245 Viet Cong bodies were found in the battle area and it is thought that many more were displaced during the night. 18 Australians were killed at Long Tan and 24 wounded - more than a third of the original combat force. Many are National Service members, fueling controversy over military service in Australia. The Battle of Long Tan has become a symbol of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War and August 18 is annually commemorated as Vietnam Veterans Day. Nearly 60,000 Australians have served in Vietnam; 521 people died and more than 3,000 were injured. Psychological adjustment to their experience has become a key issue for many Vietnam veterans in the US and Australia. Indeed, thanks in no small part to the efforts of Vietnam veterans in the United States, the diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was finally accepted into the official psychiatry literature with the advent of of the DSM-III in 1980. That acceptance has led to increased research and understanding of the nature and treatment of this disability.END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).WORLD VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST ORDER=BUDDHIST DHARMA WHEEL GOLDEN MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.17/7/2022.VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=VIETNAMESE BUDDIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.
