Light of the Mind According to the Sixth Patriarch Hue Neng. Self-nature, self-mind, self-nature, self-nature are the terms used by the Sixth Patriarch Hui-neng in his sermons to refer to the nature of mind, the nature of mind; but the self-native noun he used the most. In the Dhammapada Sutra, Mr. Hui Neng said that the nature of mind is emptiness and light (or light nature). Here we will learn in more detail about the two main characteristics of the nature of mind, emptiness and light. 1/ The original mind is emptiness. Venerable Hui Neng said the Maha Prajnaparamita (Ultimate Great Wisdom) as follows: "Good knowledge! People in the world recite Prajna with their mouth all day long, but do not know the intrinsic nature of Prajna, just like eating but not being full. Just say No, then for a lifetime, you won't be able to see nature, and it won't help in the end. Mindful mind doing, the mind of the mouth corresponds. The nature is Buddha,If there is no other nature, there is no other Buddha. Why is it called Maha? Ma ha is great, the mind is as vast as space, has no borders, is neither large nor small, neither green, yellow, red, white, neither angry nor happy, neither good nor evil, neither good nor evil. beginning not end. The Buddha lands are like space, the wonderful nature of human beings is inherently Emptiness, and there is no dharma that can be attained. The same is true of the Self-nature of Voidness.” (Product of Wisdom) "Nature is Buddha, self-mind is Buddha". This is the common ground of all Buddhism. Master Padmasambhava (circa 8th-9th century), one of the transmitters of Buddhism to Tibet, also taught: "All the Buddhas of the three times Realized self-mind beyond arising From this unborn state, they manifest as three kayas And cannot be accomplished by leaving it. Be sure of this."(Treasures from Juniper Ridge - Treasures from the top of the juniper tree - Good Knowledge Publishing House 2020) The next section speaks of the true nature of emptiness, which embraces all existence. Not only is emptiness pervading all existence, but all existence is emptiness. Mind and scene are both emptiness: "Buddha realms are like space, the wonderful nature of human beings is inherently Emptiness, no dharma can be attained". “Good knowledge! The void world includes all forms, sun and moon stars, mountains and rivers, land, springs, canals, trees, forests, good people, evil people, good dharmas, evil dharmas, heaven and earth. Hell, all the oceans, the Mount Meru, are in Void. The emptiness of people is also like that.” The world, sentient beings, and mind are emptiness. Emptiness is the true nature of all body and mind and the world and sentient beings. So the Sixth Patriarch referred to his method of no-thought, no-sign, and no-abiding: “Good knowledge! This method of mine from the past to the present, first established no-thought as the school, the formless as the body, the non-abiding as the root. Signless is where the general leaves the general. No-thought is the place where thoughts leave thoughts. Non-abiding is the nature of human beings” (Dinh Hue quality). Formless, Non-conceptual, Non-abiding are emptiness. Thus, the practice of contemplation meditation on the nature of mind or nature is meditation on the contemplation of emptiness. 2/ The nature of mind is light The nature of mind is not empty, nothing, nothing at all. The Sixth Patriarch rejected this insignificance: "Good knowledge! Don't listen to me say No, then cling to No. First, don't cling to emptiness, if the mind is empty and sits quietly, that is clinging to nothingness. There are people who are deluded, their mind is empty, but they sit still, without thinking about a hundred things, they consider this to be great. It is impossible for such people to speak, because they are caught in wrong views” (Wisdom grade). The original mind has light and emits light: "On earth my mind is the Tathagata's awareness, emitting great light, illuminating the six pure doors outside, or destroying the six sensual heavens. The self-nature shines inside the three poisons immediately, the hell sins are temporarily destroyed. Clear inside and out is no different from the West. If you don't practice like that, how can you get to the other realm?" (Question) That light often exists in everyone's mind, just because it's chasing outside shadows, it hides itself: "All sentient beings because of their self-obstruction of light, are greedy for the world, and outside are charming. clinging, in the chaos, so I have to bear to follow samsara" (Quality Condition). The original mind or self-nature is the Pure Dharma Body of the Buddha, which is usually as bright as the sun and moon:“Why is it called the Pure Dharma Body of the Buddha? People are inherently pure. All dharmas are born from the self-nature, thinking and measuring all evil means generating evil, thinking and measuring all good means generating good behavior. Thus all dharmas are in their own nature, just as the sky is always clear, the sun and the moon are always bright, but because the clouds cover it, it is bright above and below it. Suddenly, when the wind blows the clouds away, they are all bright above and below, and all images appear. Good knowledge! Wisdom is like the sun, wisdom is like the moon. Wisdom is often bright, because it is outside clinging to the scene, so it is obscured by the cloud of false thoughts, but it is not clear" (Repentance). The mind itself has its own light, which the Sixth Patriarch called "his own spiritual light": Not seeing a dharma, but not seeing Like a floating cloud covering the sun Not knowing a dharma that keeps the unknown Again like space giving rise to lightning. This seeing and knowing suddenly arise. Mistaken where ever understood the means. (Destiny product). In the chapter Dinh Hue, the Sixth Patriarch explains that concentration and wisdom are one body, concentration is like a lamp, wisdom is like light, the two are inseparable: "Good knowledge! This method of mine is based on concentration wisdom. Don't be fooled by the masses, but say other private wisdom. Concentration and wisdom are one body, not two. Concentration is the body of wisdom, wisdom is the use of concentration, at the moment of wisdom, concentration is in wisdom, at the moment of concentration, wisdom is in concentration. If you know the meaning of this, it means that you are destined to be a fellow student. Good knowledge! What is the reason for equality? Just like a light is on, with a light it is bright, without a light it is dark. Lamp is the body of light, light is the use of lamp, although there are two names, the body is identical. The same is true of the Dharma of samadhi here.”A word in the suttas that is often used synonymously with the wisdom of concentration is contemplation. Mr. Hui Neng taught his Zen method as "common-learning concentration", "equal wisdom", that is, contemplating only at the same time. Concentration or only, is emptiness motionless, quiet. Hue or contemplation is the light of the mind that often shines. Concentration, Emptiness and Light, Emptiness and Clarity, are inherent in the nature of mind. Concentration wisdom is inherent in the Void-Mind, and the President-Chief is inherent in the original mind and is also the original mind, the nature of the mind. Recognizing emptiness and lightness (“lightness” is the word “Thunder Ngu Giac” Hoang Tran Nhan Tong used a lot in Cu Tran Lac Dao Phu to refer to the light of the original mind) is the way back to the original mind which is emptiness and nature. shining. In the Dharma Bao Dan Sutra, there are many places that talk about the light of the original mind. Here are some more criticisms.Unsurpassed Great Nirvana, Round and bright, often passed away, Fools call it death, Outsiders accept it as an end... (Quality Predestined) Three bodies of the body Four intelligences are inherently intelligent Body intelligence is not afraid to wear objects depending on the shape... (Quality Co) Condition) 3/ Seeing and Living in Emptiness and Lightness One cannot see and cannot live in the nature of emptiness and clarity because of being obscured by one's own defilements and by external signs, thus being lost in birth and death. The Sixth Patriarch said: "You must now know: The Buddha, for all the deluded people, accepts the five aggregates of harmony and harmony as the external appearance, and then desires to live and hates to die. His thoughts and thoughts are drifting. He doesn't know that it's a false dream. samsara, taking Nirvana is often transformed into the sign of suffering that all day long seek. Therefore, the Buddha was merciful, so he only showed Nirvana, where there is no sign of birth in the moment, and in the moment there is no sign of cessation.there is no birth and death to destroy, this is the current extinction. While there is no money present, there is no new amount of money called ordinary money. In this bliss, there is no one who feels it or one who doesn't, so how can there be a name for a body of five uses? What's more, it says that Nirvana forbids all dharmas, making it permanent. That is slandering the Buddha, mocking the Dharma." (Quality Condition) Living in the nature of the mind, Not being aware of it, knows the five aggregates, the outer world is a false dream, so it is not lost in samsara. When abiding in the clear nature of emptiness, all samsara is "equal like a dream", because all appearances are dreamlike appearances on the basis of emptiness and light: Only people transcending the quality Knowledge of not taking away Because of knowing the dharma of the five aggregates And self in the five aggregates. In addition to manifesting forms, images, All sounds, signs and sounds Equal as a dream, No arising (the) seeing the divine, Not creating (the) seeing Nirvana Two sides, three times ending... (Quality Condition) When abiding in emptiness and In the light of nature, all the dharma realms become the environment of freedom: "Good knowledge! The mind is vast throughout the entire dharma world, so it is clear to use it. The application immediately knows everything, all is one, one is all, comes and goes freely, the mind does not stop being afraid, which is the Wisdom of Prajna." (Product Wisdom) Mindfulness of mindfulness and abiding in emptiness and clarity is practice, that is to constantly see nature: "Contemplative thoughts often see their own pure nature, self-cultivation, self-realization of the Buddha Way" (Qualifications) Meditate). To abide in emptiness and lightness is to be liberated in this life, free in this world.Because all appearances are "equal as dreams and illusions", this is freedom, so it can be established, it can't be established: "If you realize your own nature, you will not establish Bodhi Nirvana, nor establish a solution. escape knowledge. There is not a single dharma that can be acquired that can establish all dharmas. If this idea is clear, it is also called the Buddha body, also called Bodhi Nirvana, also called the liberation of knowledge. Those who see the nature can establish it, can't establish it, can come and go freely, don't stop and don't be afraid, apply according to do, respond according to their response, appear throughout the nirmanakaya without leaving the self-nature, that is, be free from supernatural powers. , du hi samadhi. That's called seeing nature" (Drop shop). If you can't establish it, you won't be able to establish it: "If you realize your self-nature, you won't establish Bodhi Nirvana, nor will you establish the view of liberation.
