Lecture: Buddha Shakyamuni told Ananda, "How are the eighteen precepts inherent in the nature of the Tathagata?
What is the eighteen precepts? The six faculties: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and mind - together with the six ceilings: color, sound, aroma, taste, contact and dharma; plus six more consciousness: visual consciousness, ear consciousness, consciousness, loss of consciousness, body consciousness and consciousness. All three groups combined into 18. Six bases go with six ceiling, between these two arise six consciousness. Consciousness is defined as making distinctions. Cause (senses) is considered as the place where these sensory functions originate, it is rooted in our body. The ceiling (scene, object) is thus defined as its quality is defiled.
It is impure, so it contaminates the nature of the six senses. When the six senses come into contact with the six mundas, they arise. Eyes that see instant arise arise as beautiful or ugly. Initially like or dislike that image, there should be a distinction. It is the same for the ear: listening to a soft or mellow sound, or to like or dislike the sound. When the arising of such discriminating mind is called the atria. The nose smells fragrant and rotten.
The two fragrances are fragrant and rotten. You may like the fragrance and dislike other scents, so that you have arisen in consciousness. The tongue distinguishes the taste. When the tongue (the rooted sense) accompanies the taste (the bare taste), there is a distinction in taste, either pleasant or disgusting - you may like or dislike it, the body-sense associated with bare-slippery smooth or rough, rough or smooth, with a variety of sensations, either fancy or dislike. The body-base accompanying the mortal body will generate the consciousness to distinguish these feelings.
The root of mind goes with the ceiling. The five ceilings just mentioned above - colors, bars, flavors, flavors, and sensations - all have a manifestation. Only the dharma ceiling is not manifested through form. They do not have a symbol. However, when the mind-door is in contact with the dharmakaya, the mind starts to distinguish, so there is a sense of discrimination in the mind. That is the way the six faculties come into contact with the six mundane phenomena that arise and form the six precepts.
All of them are contained in the true nature of the Tathagata.

Kinh văn:  This knowledge is complex ,  born of the eye with the eye as the boundary ?  Born by the color ,  with the color as the boundary ?

Vietnamese translation: That consciousness is born where the eyesight is born, taking eye-sense-door; Or the human being who is born and takes the rupa which is the precepts?
Lecture: "When this consciousness arises because the six senses come into contact with the six senses, that consciousness is born of the eye-sense and born, taking the eye-sense-door to be a precept?" Is it because of the eye that consciousness is born, then taking the eye as its precept? "Or is the human being born into the world? Is it because the place where the ceiling is born, and then it is the worldly form?

Explain: "Ananda, if the eye-sense arises - Ananda, if the eyesight in which the eye-consciousness is produced, it should not have anything to do with appearance and emptiness." Thus, the causal condition of materiality and emptiness will be regarded as non-existent for consciousness. Without color and emptiness is indistinguishable. If there is no rupa and nothingness, then nothing will be distinguished. It is because he is attached to the ceiling that makes discrimination arise.
Or, if he accepts into nothingness, there is also discrimination. But, what he assumes here is that there is no form and nothingness. Then what is the distinction to be born? There is nothing to make a distinction. Despite his consciousness, what can be used for it? Suppose that you have consciousness; What would you use it for? It will be useless. ”

' When there is nowhere, there is no rupa, his consciousness should have ceased. When there is no rupa in nothingness, there is nothing for him to distinguish, he should have been destroyed already. If the eye-consciousness arises from rupa, then when there is no rupa to see, his eye-consciousness must disappear. How did he know the emptiness?
So, how do you know if it's nothing? Because he knew it was emptiness, his consciousness obviously did not disappear. He was still awake. Therefore, his view does not arise from the rupa. So, where did your consciousness come from? ”

Lecture: "He said that due to rupa, the consciousness arises. If the appearance changes, he also knows that the form changes. He also knows that. But his consciousness is not changed. But his consciousness does not change. If it arises from rupa, then his consciousness will change when rupa changes. But it is not so. So where is the world of consciousness established? If consciousness arises from rupa, then precepts must be made of rupa. But when rupa changed, consciousness did not follow rupa and change with it. After all, what is the precept of your mind? ”

Vietnamese translation: If the consciousness changes when the color of the ceiling changes, then naturally the color of the ceiling cannot become gender. If the eye consciousness does not change, it will be permanent, the consciousness has been born of color, it should not know where nothing is.
Lecture: "If the eye changes when the ceiling changes." The way of arguing in the preceding paragraph is when the eye consciousness does not change. "If you think that eye consciousness changes when it experiences changes in the physical color, then the physical color of the mind cannot be realized." There will be no gender. It will often change. "If the eye doesn't change, it will be permanent." If it does not follow transformation, it will be permanent.
"Consciousness is born of rupa" - because it is said that eye-consciousness arises from rupa - "Shouldn't he have known nowhere?" If the visual consciousness arises from something that appears, then it will not know where nothingness is, because its precepts will be within the sphere of rupa. As for appearance, there is material nature, so if it is the form of consciousness, it is impossible to know the void.

Vietnamese translation: Assuming the eye consciousness arises from both eye-sense and materiality, then when combined, there must be a connection in the middle; when leaving, there must be a contiguous point on both sides. Such is the disorder, how to become a gender?
Lecture: "Suppose the eye-consciousness arises together from both the eye-sense and sense-consciousness." Suppose as the eye-sense, combined with rupa, the two together generate consciousness. When combined, there must be a junction in the middle. If both combine to produce consciousness, then when both combine, there must be a boundary between the two, since they are not a unique entity. Assume that the eye-consciousness produces consciousness, and at the same time rupa produces consciousness; color is senseless, while eye-sense is known; what is from the mortal form is not known; what arises from the eye-sense will be known.
When something is known to fit with something which is not known, due to the dissimilarity, there must be a boundary between the two. There must be a connection between them. "When leaving, there must be a contiguous point on both sides." If when they are separated, one is the eye-sense and the other is the rupa. Half is known, half is not conscious. It is a union of two things. "That is a disorderly nature, how to become a gender?" If explained in this way, then the nature of the confusion, no structure at all. Therefore, if their physical characteristics are not clearly discerned, how can the gender of the visual consciousness exist? Gender cannot be established.

The Buddha tried to see whether Ananda understood the meaning above? But the more Buddha explained, the more An-nan felt confused. So again, Ananda did not dare to answer. Buddha continued to explain:

"Which did not know anything." Atrial base completely ignorant of the existence of the bar. Without the presence of the two stills, there would be no bar, there would be no bar, obviously nothing would be the object of awareness. "The knowing is still unsuccessful." - Because there is no awareness, "What form is the consciousness?" Where did his consciousness come from? How is it like? This consciousness does not exist either. You can see the ear as one of the rupas, so how does it match the ceiling, also the form, and generate precepts? This is not possible. So where did the eardrum form? Then where, after all, arises the world of consciousness? Is it made by the atrium or with the mundane? Definitely must match one. But which one? ”

Kinh văn:  If you were born in a voice and the  consciousness is due to the sound ,  then you don't have to hear it. If you don’t hear it ,  you will die .

Lecture: "Again, Ananda, as he often knew, as he clearly knew, he had heard the excess teachings before. The teachings on excess power refer to the five aggregates, the six elements, the twelve states and the eighteen precepts. He understood this whole teaching. But, the teaching of the eighteen precepts is only presented as a method of means for the Second and the Gentile to lead them. Now Tathagata will explain his teaching in detail. Do not become attached to these dharmas.
"Tanh cu and mundane incense make conditions, born of consciousness. Tanh cu and the ceiling of mutual support create conditions. Both create conditions to create consciousness. When consciousness was born, where did he say it came from as in the final analysis? After all, is there such an entity called consciousness? ”

Kinh văn:  This knowledge is complex ,  born from the nose ,  with the nose as the boundary. Born by incense, with incense as the boundary

Kinh văn:  Ananda ,  if she had a nose. What is the nose in your heart? To take the shape of a flesh , two  claws ?  To take a smell ,  shake the nature ?
Phonetic:  A-nan, weakness of the students, the central principle of obstruction, of course, the refugee? Vi of corporal punishment, but trie? Vi knowledge, oscillation Tanh Tanh?
Vietnamese translation: Ananda, if you are born with consciousness, do you take the nose of flesh shaped like two nails, or use the sense of smell when the nose moves as a base?

But Ananda still did not understand this doctrine. “You took the flesh nose shaped like two nails? Did he accept the nose like a piece of meat shaped like two nails? Or take the know-how to smell stir as a base?
Or do you accept the sense of smell, the ability to smell olfactory? When the nose has a sneeze, it is the ability to smell. Do you accept this nature as a base? "

Kinh văn:  If you take the form of flesh , the  flesh is the body , and you know it. The name is not the nose , the name touches the dust. The nose is still unknown ,  why does the cloud stand on the boundary ?
Phonetic:  Consuming corporal punishment, physical humiliation of the body; Friendly tri sensation. Non-refuge relatives list, contact bare news. Unknown monk, Yun Ha established?
Vietnamese translation: If taking the form of the nose meat, then the flesh is body-base; relatives know that is emotion. Having called the body-base, it is not asylum-based, it is called emotion which is exposed to body-base. So the root doesn't even have a name, how to make a precepts?
Preaching: The Buddha explained further to Ananda, "If you take the appearance of the flesh nose. Suppose you think that consciousness has the character of meat - then flesh is body-base. ” What is of flesh nature belongs to the body. But "the body knows the feeling." - what the body perceives is called emotion; not called consciousness - "Having called the body-sense is not feeling-consciousness, having called emotion is bare contact with the body-sense."
What is of flesh nature belongs to the body, and what the body perceives is called exposed. "So the root doesn't even have a name, how can one form a precepts?" In this case, there is nothing called the atria. Even without an atrium, how did you establish a precept for it? ”
Buddha did not give what was not very reasonable. We all know we have a nose. Now the Buddha made Ananda's nose disappear. After all, is the human nose up or down? Buddha did not ask Ananda like that. But now I ask you, who are studying the Shurangama Sutra in this conference, that your nose is pointing up or down? If you answer this question, you have passed the monthly survey.

Kinh văn:  If we take sniffing know ,  and Ru mind ,  to what is known ?  Meat is known ,  then the meat of knowledge ,  yuan non-touch nose.

The first precept is not to kill; but, if you cannot stop killing completely, then you can receive the second precept, not to steal. If you still like to drink, like I have a disciple who drinks; and if you don't want to take the fifth ordination, don't use alcohol and drugs, then you can take the first precept without killing, the second precept is not stealing and the third precept is not adultery. The fourth precept is not to lie.
If you find that, "I still like to talk, I cannot take precepts without lying," you can take the four precepts: no killing, no stealing, no adultery and no drinking. Sometimes you say that you cannot stop killing - sometimes you accidentally kill ants and mosquitoes - if you have taken the precepts and committed it, you will later commit a very serious crime. Then you can decide not to receive private killing. It is up to you, but don't miss the opportunity to receive ordination.

Just as water freezes: meaning depends. But ice can also melt into water. I have explained this morality before. Everyone's Buddha-nature is the true nature. Enlightened Bodhi mind is water; negativity is ice. His bodhichitta mind is like water, useful, beneficial to everyone, it does no harm to anyone. Everyone needs water.
You immediately have an idea: "Sorcerer, I do not agree with what the Sorcerer has just given, because water can sometimes drown people."
You are very smart. You know that too much water can cause death. But without water, will people die of thirst? So water is essential for everyone. Of course, too much water puts people at risk. If you don't eat, you get hungry, but if you eat day after day, see if your stomach has a place to store everything. Having too much is also not enough. Eating too full is just as damaging as starving violently.
So, water can freeze. I often say that if you pour a bucket of water on someone's head, he won't feel any pain. But if you use an ice cube on someone's head, it can kill them. A lump of ice can kill, but a dipper doesn't kill anyone. Water and ice are actually the same substance, but in the form of ice it can be lethal, but in the form of water it is not. So negativity is like ice (ice), Bodhi is like water. In the Sutta the Buddha taught. "Negativity is Bodhi." Ice is water. There is no ice outside the country. Water is in ice and ice is in water.

There is another important thing that I now want to explain to you. The Fa conference we attend is very wonderful. How is this understood? I preached in Chinese, then Chinese words were translated into English. So I have preached Dharma in two languages. But when you listen to the sutta, whatever language you hear and understand it with, you must be very attentive.
First of all, everyone listening to the sermon must be grateful to the Buddha Shakyamuni. What happened? Because a few thousand years ago, the Buddha himself preached this wonderful teaching, lighting a light on a long, dark night, because sentient beings are in tribulation. He presented that wonderful teaching so that we could eliminate suffering and gain joy, to distance ourselves from all afflictions in the world, and to understand the Tao, leading to peaceful bliss.
The Buddha said that the magic of making people who are full of afflictions like us free from defilement, to make the ice in us melt into water, so that we can return to our roots and return to the mind. . So we have to thank Buddha Shakyamuni.
Second, we must be grateful to Venerable Ananda. What happened? If at that time, Ananda spoke smartly and said, "World Honored One, you don't need to explain it anymore, I understand it," then the Buddha will no longer preach this magic. Buddha will not lecture Sutra Surangama. Nor will it be easy to understand these doctrines. So we have to thank Venerable Ananda for being so early for us to ask. He requested the Buddha Shakyamuni to show us the dharma.
I also have something less important to tell you. What is that? You should also thank the Dharma preacher. It is me. Do not ignore that. I say this is not important, but you should not take it lightly. I was basically a magician who only gained half of my understanding. I do not teach sutra well. You can say, "Oh! Originally, he did not teach sutras, but he came here to teach us people who did not understand Buddhism. No wonder we didn't understand what we heard. You basically understand only half of it. ”
But if you can understand half of the Dharma, it is not so bad. What happened? Because Buddha Dharma is as deep as the sea. You want to understand it thoroughly, but it's not easy. I studied Buddhism for a few dozen years - thirty to forty years - yet I felt as if I could not drink a whole drop of water in that big sea, because the Buddha Dharma was so deep, so wonderful. That's why I said that I am a magician who has only half of my understanding.
But you should also know that you understand quite a lot now, because you are like green, extracted from blue, that is, there are first-class students but no first-class teachers. "My teacher is only a Wizard who has half the understanding, but I, his disciple, have learned very well." That's what you have to know.
Finally, you should be grateful to the person who translated the sutta. No matter who is translating the scriptures, you must be very close and listen very respectfully. You have to pay special attention to every word and every sentence. Because I teach sutras in Chinese and most of you do not understand, you need to rely on the merits of the translator to understand the morality in the Sutta Pitaka. So you have to thank the translator; Be careful not to look down on them.
Why am I talking about this today? Because in the review I asked you to do, I saw someone wrote: "Here I heard the Dharma preacher but I did not understand what he said, and the translator was not clear so I would not come here to study too. ” The people who wrote these lines were very smart, but unfortunately she meant to fool herself. Why do I say that? Because she has no patience at all.
When you listen to the sutta, you should be patient, regardless of whether you understand it or not. When you are in the Dharma lecture, you become incubated by the teachings, as well as the fragrance that invades the space, eventually the light of wisdom will shine. Those who are enlightened when listening to the sutras are really many. You should not despise listening to a lecture.
When I was in Hong Kong, there was a lay woman who could not listen to the sutta, because she was deaf. But whenever there was a lecture she would attend. She climbed more than three hundred levels to the temple even though she was over seventy years old and was alone. When the lecture finished just after nine in the evening, she came down from the mountain again to take the bus home alone. But she was deaf, how could she hear? How strange! After she had come to the lecture about a month earlier, suddenly she heard it. The deaf woman has heard and is no longer in distress.
You hear this and think deeply, but it's really not unusual at all. Simply because she was so sincere. "Even if I can't hear, I'm going to attend." She told herself that. As a result, she heard it. So, if a seventy-year-old woman gets that kind of touch, if you are here with sincerity, regardless of whether you understand the sutras or not, then you will eventually get understand. Don't worry that you don't immediately understand the sutta.
What you need to do is be sincere, and the day you understand the sutra will come. If you don't have sincerity, you will say, "I've heard it all the time but I don't understand it at all. So I will become one of the 5000 people leaving the conference. If you leave the Fa conference, your virtue is not enough.
In general, to attend a Fa conference, you must have merit in religious cultivation. Those who do not have the merit of cultivating cannot sit down in the Fa conference. They sit and stand, stand and sit again, they are impatient, and they want to go. What happened? Because the evil karma entices them. The karma said, "You shouldn't be sitting here, you're good friends with each other, get out there and play around."
So you should pay attention to these four things when listening to the sutta. In fact, not only do you have to be grateful to the translator, but also to get along well and cordially with all the people who attend the Fa lecture with you. Everyone should rejoice together. This is the most important thing while listening to the sutta, do not ignore this.

Who is the world? They are heathen cultivators and ordinary people follow the method of inheritance. They are people who are confused about the Tathagata nature, which is always pure from the nature and covers the dharma realm. They do not realize this. They claim that it comes from predestined and natural nature. This is the opinion of Hinayana goods: legal conditions. "Or nature."

But in fact, the human race is not very pure. 'Brahmin' is also explained with the meaning of 'pure purpose.' They believe that their ancestors came from Brahma Heaven, so they thought they belonged to a noble and pure family.

"Again if there arises, it is not called nothingness." It has been called nothingness, how can it be released? ”

Teaching: The Buddha called again, "Ananda, if that view - the ability to see it - together with light, darkness and nothingness is one body. Suppose there is no distinction between them. But, the light of the dark will destroy each other. When it is not dark, when it is morning it is not dark. Light is not dark, dark is not light. How do you say morning and evening are the same? The properties of these two entities destroy each other. In the morning there is certainly no darkness; and when it is dark there is certainly no light. If seeing is the same body with the dark - If he thinks that seeing and the same darkness, is the same - then when the morning comes, the vision has to disappear. Seeing to see the darkness has to be lost.
