The mysterious box contains the cremated remains of Buddha. Archaeologists have discovered bones dating back more than 1,000 years that are believed to have belonged to Buddha Shakyamuni buried in a tiny golden coffin hidden in an underground crypt in Gansu, China. According to Live Science, the skull fragment is hidden inside a model of a funeral tower dating back more than 1,000 years. This tower is placed in the middle of the iron chest in a stone chest in the tomb at the foot of Luu Ly tower of Dai Bao An pagoda in Nanjing, China. The inscriptions on the chest confirm that the skull fragment is part of the remains of Shakyamuni Buddha. The tower has a sophisticated design, made of sandalwood, gold and silver materials, covered with gems made of glass, crystal, onyx and borage. The tower is 117 cm high and 45 cm wide. According to the inscriptions engraved on the outside of the stone chest, The tower containing the remains was built during the reign of Emperor Chan Tong of the Bac Song dynasty (years 997-1022). The text on the tower includes the names of the fundraisers and the construction materials, as well as the names of some builders. A team of archaeologists from the Nanjing Institute of Archeology excavated the catacombs between 2007 and 2010 with the assistance of many experts from other institutes in China. Details of the findings were published in Chinese in Wenwu magazine in 2015 before being translated into English in the Chinese Cultural Relics magazine. Archaeologists have discovered bones that are 1000 years old that are believed to have belonged to Buddha Shakyamuni. In addition, a collection of 260 Buddha statues up to 2m high was also found. Archaeologists do not know whether the skull fragment really belonged to the Buddha or not. Even so, The bone fragment located at The Ha pagoda in Nanjing is still worshiped with devotion by the monks. The inscription on a stone chest was written by Venerable Duc Minh. According to Venerable Duc Minh, after the Buddha entered nirvana, his body was cremated near the Hirannavati River in India. The ruling Indian emperor at that time, Ashoka (reigned from 268 to 232 BC) decided to preserve the Buddha's remains by dividing it into a total of 84,000 parts.
