Lesson 3
Vietnamese History of Buddhism (From The Beginning of Introduction to The End of the Ly Dynasty)

A.-Open Topic
During the French colonial period, because of the general destiny of the whole country, which was in decline, being overwhelmed by Western culture and paganism, Buddhism for the majority of the Vietnamese people as a subordinate, dependent religion, does not make any sense.
But because if anyone goes deep into the history of Vietnamese Buddhism following the steps of the mission through the ages from when the people of Vietnam first established the country, they will see Buddhism holding a position. It is very important in the work of building up Vietnamese culture. It can be said without overstatement: Vietnamese culture is largely a Buddhist one. Drawing out the Buddhist nature in Vietnamese culture, the culture is very poor and superficial. The Venerable Venerable himself, in the book "Vietnam - History Buddhism" has said it is very true: "thanks to the lucid spirit of the religion, with the patristic industry of the Buddhist masters, there is great merit in history. culture of the country ”.
Nowadays, in order to properly recognize the important role and historical mission of Buddhism in our country, as well as to add thought and excitement to practice, to inherit the spirit of "Bi-Tri-Dung" of Buddhism and pass it on to future generations, we, Vietnamese Buddhists, need to know the history of Vietnamese Buddhism in Vietnam.
B. -The Right Concise
I.- Buddhism Imported into Vietnam
1.-  The path of introduction. - Vietnam is located on the Indian peninsula of India, between two large countries, the two largest peoples in the world, the two bright civilizations of Asia, India and China. Because the terrain of Vietnam is located in the middle of the sea route to India from China, so it has been influenced by those two civilizations.
Regarding Buddhism, the monk introduced to Vietnam was also due to both roads: the sea from the south and the road from the north. Of the first four missionaries who set foot in Vietnam, all three monks were Indians, traveled by boat to China to preach and came to Vietnam: Ma-Ha-Ky- Abyss, Khuong-Tăng-Hội and Chi-Cương-Lương.
The fourth missionary was Chinese, Mister-Mister, who traveled down the road from the North. That is what proves that Buddhism entered Vietnam because of both the waterway and the road from the south to the north. But because our country was dominated by China for a thousand years and then still depended on culture and politics, later on the path of mission from China to the main one.
2.-  The first import era.  -According to reliable historians, the first missionary to Vietnam (at that time was Giao-Chau) was Mr. Mau-Bac, from Thuong Ngo district, Ngo Chau. ). After the death of Emperor Han-King (189) of the Chinese nation, he often spread his word. He followed his mother to stay in Giao Chau and spread Buddhism.
The second missionary who landed on Giao-Chau land was Khương-Tăng-Hội, who was originally from Khuương-Cư (Soadiane, India). His purpose was to go to China, but his grandfather went to Giao-Chau to trade, so he followed the Giao-Chau route to China. At that time, when China was in the Three Kingdoms period, he came to Dong-Ngo and was admired by Ngo-Ton-Quyen, took refuge with Him (229-252). Thus, Mr. Khuong-Tăg-Hội stopped at Giao-Châu in the early third century AD, after the Western calendar.
Around the middle of the third century to the end of the third century, Giao-Chau welcomed two more Indian monks, Ma-Ha-Ky-Vuc and Chi-Cuong-Luong, on their way to China. - their teachings, in the Qin dynasty (265-306).
Thus, it can be said that Buddhism was first introduced to Vietnam in the end of the second century to the third century, after the Western calendar.
3.-  The introduced sects .- During the first period of the introduction of Vietnam, Buddhism was only ignored in the country, there was no particular color and people had only contact with the Dao-Buddha in the medium. worship only.
It was not until a few years later that Buddhism gradually penetrated into the people and was influenced by Chinese Buddhism. One of us is surprised that, even though Chinese Buddhism consists of ten sects, only Zen-Sun is transmitted to Vietnam first and foremost. This ton was first introduced into Vietnam by Bhikkhuni Ni-Da-Luu-Chi (Vinitaruci). He is the disciple of the mind-transmission of Tam-to Tăng-Xán, and is the founder of Zen-Tôn in Việt-Nam.
In the life of the Duong dynasty (820), there was again Vo-Ngon-Thong from China to evangelize and form the second Zen-Ton school; next are the Sects of Thao-Đường, Tào-dynamic, Lâm-te, etc. in turn transmitted to Vietnam.
In short, Buddhism was introduced into Vietnam, only Zen-Ton was the most powerful influence.
B.- Buddhism Under the Post- Empowerment  of Nam De (571-602) And The Third Belongs (603-939)
Since Buddhism was introduced into Vietnam until the pre-Ly Nam-De period, including over three years (189-548), it is still in its infancy period. It was not until the Late Ly Nam-De (571-602) and Northern times (603-939) that Buddhism began to enter the era of success.
1. -The first stage.-  The propagation of Zen-Ton by Bhikkhuni Ni-Da-Luu-Chi in China (580) brought Zen-Ton to propagate, being very devoted to the Vietnamese . Therefore, for the first time, Vietnam was known to Zen Buddhism and His Excellency Ni-Da-Luu-Chi was the founder of Zen-Ton in Vietnam. After the Bhikkhu-Ni-Da-Luu-Chi, Mr. Phap-Hien was a disciple of Mr. Bhikkhu-Da-Luu-Chi, who succeeded him and brought Buddhism into the people.
2.- The second phase. - Influence of three missions
At this point, Vietnamese Buddhism began to flourish. At that time, our country was dependent on Sui dynasty, King Sui-Sui, when our country was Buddhism thriving, so the king gave monks in our country five ark of offerings, and decreed. towers in Phap-Van Pagoda, Trung-Khanh Pagoda and other landmarks.
Sui later lost the throne (618) of the Tang dynasty, King Duong-Cao-To also granted An-Nam with five Xa-Lan balls and erected a pagoda to build a tower.
Also during this period, Chinese and Indian missionaries, often borrowed from our country, came across strangers. While traveling across Vietnam they often stop for a few moments to lecture, so we also have a lot of good influence. Among those missions, the most telling are the following three delegations:
a) -The first delegation: composed of the Master-Vien-magician, Hue-Manh meditation-master, and Infinite-Teacher Zen, all Chinese.
b) -The Second Delegation: Consisting of the Ðàm-Nhàn-dharma teachers, Trí-Hoàng magic-wizards, and Tăng-Gia-Bạt-Ma (both of them were Chinese and he was after the Tây-Trúc).
c) -The third group: Consisting of six Vietnamese monks, the members of Vân-Kỳ meditation-master, Moc-Xoa-Ðề-Bà, Khuy-Sung shaman, Hue-Diem dharma-master, and Tri-Meditation -the four heads of Giao-Châu, two of them after the Ai-Châu (Thanh-Hóa, Nghệ-An-bbay now). They went from Vietnam to the Dharma Bridge in Tay-Truc and passed away, mostly very early, in India or Sri Lanka.
3.- The third stage.- The propagation of Vo-Vo-Thong sect:
In 820, our country was again a high-ranking Zen monk to evangelize and form a second Zen-Ton sect called Vo-Ngon-Thong.
The surname is Trinh, from Guangzhou. As a child, he was religious and ordained as a monk at Song-Lam pagoda, in Vu-Chau land (Triet-Giang). His temper was calm, quiet, but his reasoning could not be understood, so the people at that time called Him Vo-Ngon-Thong.
One day, he was sitting in a Buddhist ceremony, met a Zen master who came to him and brought him to seek the found-out Buddha to attend. But when he came to Jiangxi, he heard that the Buddha passed away, so he went to ask a master for the Buddha-angel statue.
One day during the lecture, a monk asked Bach-Tuong:
What is the method of the Mahayana school?
Answer group:
The mind is weak, the lily is self-illuminating (that is, if the mind is already clear, the sun of Hue is naturally illuminated).
Hearing those sentences, he Vo-Language-Thong immediately directed. He returned to Guangzhou, the abbot at An-Hoa pagoda. In 820, he went to Vietnam to stay at Kien-So pagoda, Phu-Dong village (Bac Ninh) and sat down to meditate all day. So for several years that nobody knows; Only the monk at that pagoda was Cam-Thanh meditation-monk knew that he was a noble-rising monk who looked after the Zen-Ton sect, so he wholeheartedly respected and worshiped as a teacher. He passed away very naturally, in 826 B.C., after imparting his mind to Meditation Teacher
His Holiness, the Zen master, passed on his initiation to the Thiên-Hội and created a tradition for the Faculty of Speech-Language (We will continue to study in later kings).
In short, for a period of nearly four hundred years, from the reign of Hau Ly Nam-De (571-602) to the end of the third Northern period (603-939), the mission in Vietnam can be divided. making three measurement phases: the first stage, due to merit of the Bhikkhu-Ni-Da-Luu-Chi branch; the second phase, led by Chinese and Vietnamese missionaries, and by the support of Sui and Duong kings; the third stage, by the Vo-Vo-Thong sect.
III.-  Buddhism Under Time and Pre-Le times (968-1009)
1.-  The general situation of Buddhism in the two generations of Dinh and Le:
In these two kings, Buddhism was greatly developed. Can say Buddhism became unique. All culture and politics in the country, a large part belongs to monks, so Buddhism is popularized easily among the masses. Although Confucianism and Taoism have long been transmitted, it is not as influential as Buddhism. During the main dynasty, Mr. Ngo-Chau-Luu worked at the position of Khuong-Viet Thai-Master; among monks, Mr. Truong Ma-Ni became a monk and a sorcerer, Dang Huyen Quang, became a majesty.
After the Đinh Dynasty lost the throne, Lê-Đại-Hành took the throne, quickly returned to the Song army (980) and was promoted. During this period, monks increased their privileges; King Le-Dai-Hanh often summoned the High Priest to the court to discuss the affairs of the country and encourage the spread of Buddha-Dharma.
It is worth noting that during this period, after getting along with the Song Dynasty, the Dai-Hanh king sent a mission to the Song Dynasty and requested the "Tripitaka" and "Tripitaka to take on". This is the first time a monk has openly come to visit China in China.
Another thing worth remembering is that during this period, among monks there were two outstanding monks who made wine for the country for a while. They are Mr. Khuong-Việt Thai-master and Mr. Ðản-Thuận meditation-masters.
2.-Mold Việt Thái-Professor: - The surname Ngo, whose name is Truth-Luu, is from the village of Cát-Lân, the abbot of the Buddha-Ðà Temple. In childhood, he studied Confucianism, grew up to receive ordination at Van-phong Zen-monk at Khai-Quoc temple. From there he specialized in reading Buddhist scriptures, understanding all the essential reasons of Zen-Ton, famous in the country. When he was 40 years old, King Dinh-first-royal wonder into asking the religion, He met against the wall, the King was very admired and named High Priest. The following year, the king again appointed him as Khuong-Viet Thai-monk (Khuong Viet was the person who helped to repair Vietnamese people).
By the time of King Le-Dai-Hanh, He was even more respected. How many mandarins and affairs of the country, the king often summoned him to ask. He had been at the court for a while and asked for a fine excuse from the elderly to build a temple on Du-hui mountain. That day, he opened a crane school, so many students came.
On the full moon day of February, the second Thuan-Thien reign of Ly dynasty, he called Da-Bao Zen-monk his loyal disciple to come, transmit the dharma-consciousness through the following verse, and then clasp his hands-an-course President.

3.- Ð--Thuận Zen-professor
His family Do, not clear where the original, from the childhood from childhood, life-world with Long-Tho Phu-Tri-Zen master. When the first Le Dynasty was newly established, he was often invited to court to discuss politics and diplomacy. King Dai-Hanh often called Ð-magic-master, but did not dare to call the name. He wrote very beautiful poetry, and was often sent to respond to Chinese messengers.
Order of Hung-Thong mail from the two houses of Tiền-Lê, Mr. Thị-President, is 76 years old. He has made the book "Bodhisattva effect Samples-repentance", now transmitted. He is the tenth tradition-style life of the Bhikkhu-Ni-Da-Luu-Chi.
4.-  General remarks about Buddhism in this period:
The Buddhism of the Diocesan-Tien-Hoang and Pre-Le dynasties was privileged and monopolized for the following reasons: monks were mostly Confucian scholars. Chinese characters were taught in Vietnamese before, but because there was no examination department, few people studied. Only the Zen masters, because they needed to study Buddhism through the scriptures in Chinese characters, had much to learn. The monks at that time, just enough Confucian, just understand the morality but also virtue, then of course in the king was respected by the king, in addition to the people respected. Buddhism in this period is not surprising.
IV.-  Buddhism Under the Ly Dynasty (1010-1225).
1.-  During the reign of Lý-Thái-Tổ:
a.-King Lý-Thái-Tổ and the situation of Buddhism in this world (1010-1028).

In 1019, he sent envoys to Trung Hoathang to bring in the Dai-Hung Buddhist Hospital.
This dynasty can be said to be the one in which Buddhism was most prosperous. The Zen masters at that time like Him Van-Hanh, Da-Bao, Sung-Pham meditation-teachers are all famous monks that the king very respected. Therefore, their mission is very easy and effective.
b) Van-Hanh Meditation-Master:
His surname is nguyen, his name is not known what his name is, Co-French village. His family forever worshiped Buddha, he excelled in his childhood, learned all the three religions and mastered the teachings of the Buddha. At the age of 20, he joined the monk, studying with him the Zen master. He specializes in practicing "Tong-maintenance-tam-ma-geographic". People often refer to his sayings as thunder. While King Dai-Hanh was still alive, he was invited to ask the officials.

2.-  Under Ly Thai Ton's reign (1028-1054):
a.-Situation of Buddhism under this king:
Ly Thai Ton succeeded Thai To throne, taking the reign Thien Thien. He is also a devout Buddhist. After defeating the invaders in the land of Hoang Chau (Nghe An), Thai Ton established 95 temples to celebrate the inauguration ceremony, lowering the tax exemption for the people in the country for one year. In 1034, Thái Tôn changed the name to Thông Thụy, at that time the Việt-Nam was granted a Tripitaka from the Song Dynasty and sent himself to Vietnam. This action had a positive influence on Buddhism in the country, and an honor for the Ly court at that time.
Since receiving the Tripitaka of the Song Dynasty, the king of Thai-ton often comes to hear the sutras and ask the sermon with him. Later, the king was taught the dharma method by the Zen Master, the seventh person in the tradition of the Vo Ngon Thong sect.
In this life, there are many monks who are very helpful in spreading the Dharma, such as Hue Linh Zen master, Dinh Luong elder, Zen master and etc. .
b.-Huệ Linh Zen Master:
The surname Lam is a secular name, a native of Dong Phu, a former descendant of Lam Phu in Tra Son (now Ha Dong). He had a foul appearance, talked fluently, and was famous for his writing or good writing since childhood. When they had excess time, he studied the Buddhist scriptures. Nearly 70 years old, he studied with Dinh Hue Zen-monk. Since then his practice has continued to improve. When the master passed the Dharma mind, he then traveled all over the forest, then to Mount Bodhi. Every time he sat there at least five or seven days. The people at that time often called him "the living Buddha". The king sent many people to ask him many times. After discussing with the king, he was very respectful and appointed him to be the Interior patriarch of the monk and ordained at Van Tue pagoda near Thang Long citadel. One day in the inner palace, there was a gathering of monks and monks,
- Regarding the wishes of Buddha, scholars often quarrel. I want the noble people here, to show where I am, so I know what your education is like.
Hue Linh Zen master immediately improvised the following stanza:

Listening to the verse, the king was very admired. At that time, many dynasties in the court and many scholars came to ask about morality and all worshiped him as a teacher.
In the life of Ton Ton, he was ordained as Ta Nhai Sangha until the fifth Gia Khanh year (1063). He has composed a few books: "the legal man suspicion, director of new literature" but all lost.
c.-Meditation-practice meditation:
He was head of the monastery at Trung-Minh pagoda in Tien-du district, a disciple of Da Bao-Zen master. After learning the path, he returned to the Tu-Son pagoda, famous reputation, the pupils crowded to thousands. His dwelling place of Dai-Tong-Lam.
During the period of Thong-Thuy (1034-1038) King Ly-Thai-Ton took a visit and asked him one day:

The Zen master read two sentences:

3.- Under Ly-Thanh-Ton's reign (1054-1075)
a) .- Buddhist Situation in this life:
Thanh-Ton took the throne, changed his country name to Dai Viet and took the reign as Long-Thuy-Thai-Binh. He was a very devoted King of Buddhism. In the fifth year of Long-Thuy (1059), he went down to build a pagoda to build a tower and cast a bell weighing 12,000 pounds in Bao Thien village, Hanoi province. That bell still remains today.
In this era, the Thảo Đường Đường branch appeared in Vietnam, transmitted by Mr. Thảo-Đường, his disciple Tuyet-Đậu Minh-Giáp from China. King Ly-Thanh-Ton received teachings with him, later being transmitted in the dharma as his first disciple Thao-Duong. The Codified Sequence of Thao-Đường School means the Zen religion of Tôn-Tôn, the third faction in our country.
Ly-Thanh-Ton was a monk who was empowered to transmit the mind of mind, and Buddhism was certainly very prosperous at that time and had great influence among the people.
b.-Phai Thảo-Đường:
In 1069, King Ly-Thanh-Ton went to fight the city, capture Chiem-Thanh King Che-Cu and many other soldiers and soldiers to be prisoners. These prisoners, the king gave the officials in the court to serve. Among the officials in the court, there was one monk. One day, the monk was away, and he saw that his "contents" were repaired by a prisoner. The Sangha was shocked, brought back to the king. The King asked for the name of the prisoner to ask, the medical response was very smooth, the commentary on Buddhist scriptures was very bright. It turned out that he was a Chinese Zen master, followed him through Chiêm-Thành and was taken prisoner. That Zen Master is Mr. Thảo-Đường.
3.-  Under the reign of Ly-Nhan-Ton (1072-1127).

As a disciple, Mr. Dinh-Huong Zen-master, studied Zen. He was very knowledgeable about the "Tam Quan" dharma in Vien-Giac business, cultivated to attain enlightenment and was conferred by his master.
After he returned to Thang Long, erected a temple on the edge of the citadel and abided there. People who want to listen to the language are very crowded.
He has composed the book: "Pharmacist Twelve Literature", which discusses about 12 great aspirations in the pharmacist. King Ly-Nhan-Ton gave the book to the envoys to China and dedicated to Triet-Ton Dynasty. King Tong handed the book to the monks at the General Quoc Pagoda to see if any milk was worth it. The Chinese masters saw and patched the Song king, saying: "This is the great incarnation who was born in the South, preaching the sutras very sophisticatedly. We mortal monks don't dare to add any more words!" .
The Song king made a copy, and the original returned it to the monk with many gifts. Vien-Chieu passed away in the sixth Quang-Huu year (1090) at the age of 92.
The following is his poem still handed down:

5.-  Under the reign of Ly-Than-Ton (1128-1138).
Ly-Nhan-Ton did not have any children, setting up the son of his royal son Gun-Hien-Hau to become Crown Prince, then ascending to the throne ie Than-Ton. In the fourth year of Thien Chu Bao Bao's reign (1136), the King became seriously ill, thanks to the cessation of Minh-Khong Meditation-monk, so the King bestowed meditation-monk as the national master and established Linh-Cam pagoda.
In this life, there are also many monks like Minh-Khong-Huyen Su, Thong-Bien-Zen-master, Bao-Gíam Zen-master and especially one nun, daughter of a prince, that is Mrs. Dieu- Multiply. This nun was ordained with Chan-Khong Zen-monk, and was the first nun in the Bhikkhuni-Ni-Da-Luu-Chi school. In addition, during this time there were also many monks in the Vo-Ngon-Thong and Thao-Duong sect that opened the ashrams to teach students or go to travel, using magic to help save many diseases.
6.-  Under the last kings of Ly dynasty: Ly-Anh-Ton  (1138-1175), Ly-Cao-Ton (1176-1210), Ly-Hue-Ton (1211-1225).
a) .- Ly-Anh-Ton and this era:
God Ton died, Crown Prince Thien-To ascended to the throne to take the emperor as Anh-Ton. Anh-Ton is a disciple of Zen-Master (the Thao-Đường sect) and is taught the dharma method, which is the fourth disciple connecting the tradition of the Thảo-Đường sect.

In this life, although the king, the concubines and the court (such as the lieutenant Tô-Hiến-Thành, the crown guard Ngo-Hòa-Nghĩa) all used the tomb of Buddhism, but the development was not particularly special. to tell. The tide is coming down, and Buddhism is going along.
c) Ly-Hue-Ton with this era: - Crown Prince Sam is connected to the throne of Cao-Ton, that is Hue-Ton. The Ly Dynasty came to this stage, so depressed. During the reign, the rebellion, the king did not have real rights, nor folklore nor peace. Therefore, Buddhism is also influenced.

Ly-Chieu-Hoang passed the throne to her husband Tran-Canh. Ly Dynasty ended from there!
7.-  General comment on Buddhism of the Ly dynasty.
If in China, the Tang dynasty was the most popular Buddhist life, then in Vietnam, the Ly dynasty was the most popular Buddhist life.
For more than two hundred years, Buddhism attained a unique position in all aspects: Ethics, literature, politics and diplomacy. Eight kings of the Ly dynasty devote to a Buddhism and many of them have attained enlightenment. The monks in that king's life were high monks, Venerable, wise and held many important positions in the court. Not only that, they are outstanding poets, talented diplomats and erudite educators. They devoted themselves to bringing their elementary, privileged world into life, creating great prestige for Buddhism. They themselves indirectly rectified eloquently by their actions, saying: Buddhism is not the same and weak but is positive, suddenly saving lives and making great contributions to the construction. water and people. Read the history of Buddhism in our country here,END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).WORLD VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST ORDER=GOLDEN AMITABHA MONATERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THICH CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.26/1/2020.
