We say these things are powerful objects, but simply that our minds are weak. Like my teacher, Mr. Ajahn Chah, often said. He used to point a rock and said, "Is that rock heavy?" Of course, people will say, "It's a big rock, I think it must be heavy." And he said, "Only when you try to lift it up. I don't feel heavy at all." Then where is the weight of the rock? It is only heavy for those who lift it and carry it. So of course, it's heavy, what is the power of that item, the power of the situation, the power of the condition? The power is only when the mind clings and carries them with it, drawn into. that and the reaction comes from the mind, not from the object.
This is speaking in the ultimate sense of reality. I do not ignore the fact that we should modify the conditions around us and that it is important to try and create good conditions for life. It is also important, and even on this spiritual path, we emphasize much on the right conditions, the right behaviors and so on; but tonight I am pointing to the source (suffering) of everything, and finally have to go back to this problem.
If I can, I will put other ads on television. I want to have ads that create peace with those who live simply, speak cute, practice meditation, and feel satisfied ... and someone will say, "I have enough, I really do not need anything more. Please make yourself peaceful; I do not need a new car, I do not need to be drunk, I do not need to smoke, I do not need to do All this, enjoy life, be safe, I have enough " Well, whatever, anything can happen.
I don't care much about it tonight, but care about the idea of how to get to the source of things more. Our mind is where the ultimate slavery begins and ends. This is where we have the final choice. We cannot control all external conditions, which is impossible. As I said, even enlightened ones can be imprisoned, disabled and restricted by external conditions. They cannot control everything, but they can control the mind, which is another matter.
Within us, there is a choice, but very few people can claim that right and make that choice. It requires training, and only when the training is complete will people get the ultimate freedom.
However, just starting the training is one step toward freedom. The first stage is to turn inside, to see and see what is happening in the mind. Begin to notice the activities of the mind, so that you can see the difference between a peaceful, calm mind and a disturbing, noisy mind. From the landmark - a calm, calm mind - to be the basis of that comparison, we will have a clear view of the functioning of the mind. If we only experience the noise and the activities outside us, we will have no opinion, and without opinion, we will not understand the situation or control it.
How do we develop this opinion? Learn how to be calm, learn to be quiet, learn to listen to noises, rush inside, observe the thinking process, think. What does that observation job do? Its quality is very precious. The function of that quality is simply knowing. It is different from normal consciousness, because normal consciousness may or may not have this quality. You can know all day except when you take a nap, but that doesn't mean you are alert or conscious in the sense that there is listening inside, watching inside. Very few people experience this quality.
It is because we have not developed this ability, that we are enslaved, that we are obeying the power of our own habits and instincts, and that we can be manipulated by situations and people around us. Our feelings, our thoughts, are very easy to guess.
Consider this quality: What are you thinking? The ability to listen, the ability to know what is in mind at this moment, is called awareness, or mindfulness. It is through this quality that we can identify what is happening in the mind and have an opinion about the thinking process. We can see desire and desire arise and we can see their consequences. We can see and reflect on the nature of anger, how it comes, where it comes from and its consequences. We can reflect on the nature of emotions. Feelings are not something too mysterious, we can understand them. They are simply structures of consciousness. They are not very different from the process of thinking and thinking because emotions in reality are the result of a process of thinking and feeling.
If we can invest some attention and energy into establishing and maintaining the quality of this awareness in our lives, we will learn a lot about the mind and about what happens to us. We will know how to not become a slave to the power of these mind states and this thinking process and by external conditions, because when our minds are alert, we can make a choice. We can choose to think or not to think. We can choose to pursue a particular series of thoughts or refuse to do so.
It requires mindfulness, awareness and mental discipline that we call concentration. This is exactly what we develop through meditation. But you don't have to meditate for years before you can experience this. You can experience it now and every day. What you have to have is the ability to concentrate and awareness, even for a moment.
Next is the issue of values. What is important to you? If we feel that freedom or peace is the most important thing, we will choose not to allow ourselves to sink into anger, desire and confusion. Is this coercion? No, it's just a choice, just like you chose to come here tonight. You make a choice. There is always a choice. Just like the decision to go in a particular direction, you follow that path, you make a choice. If the choice is affected by fear and ignorance, it is an unwise choice. A clever choice comes from understanding.

A clever choice comes from understanding.
If you want to be free, you must be strong. You have to have mental energy towards freedom. This spiritual power is a collection of two qualities of mindfulness (concentration) and concentration (concentration), which are two particularly important qualities needed for every kind of situation that happens to our lives today now on. In two qualities, mindfulness is more important. You can cultivate mindfulness in your daily life, you can bring this quality into the mind. All you need to do is remember there is awareness and know what is happening in the present. In the meantime, what are you experiencing? What are you thinking about
What causes the practice of mindfulness? Forgetting is mainly, the mind runs in response and instinctively and mechanically. This is an extremely powerful force, it is not something that can be overcome easily. This requires a lot of honesty. If you want to have mental freedom, you will have to invest energy and have the interest to do it. You must strive to truly recognize that ability by awareness right in the present moment, through what you are doing.
Here are some examples that illustrate what I want to say:
It is hot right now. It's not too hot, but imagine that it's really hot and you're starting to sweat and feel uncomfortable. What will happen to you? You can say that the body is hot and sweating, yes, but what else will happen? Tam started to react "I don't want this. It's terrible I want to get out of here. Let me get out of here. Why not have an air conditioner? , these Buddhists, can't they organize a retreat better? Why don't they attach an air conditioner here? "Your mind can really go down to town. Meanwhile I am talking and your mind is half here and half there, thinking, thinking, thinking, with frustration, with aversion, with a lack of patience, patience .. .
That's what can happen but often you don't know it's happening. In other words you are in it, assimilating to it, drowning in it, but you don't know that you are drowning in it. This is the first problem, you do not know that you are drowning. That's why you drown often - because you don't know you're drowning. Fish are in the water, but it has no concept of water. Is this what is happening? We are experiencing a state of frustration, impatience or aversion, but we do not know ... It is painful.
But after a while you wake up: "I really feel hot under the collar - not only hot, but also the heat due to anger, impatience and discomfort." What is it then? Usually, you continue to fall back into drowning. What if you could maintain that awareness with a different attitude? Does the mind need to be in those negative states? If your body is hot, do you need to be angry and frustrated? So stop! The body is hot, sweating - we call this uncomfortable feeling, but still endure it. Stop that negative process in your mind: Negative thoughts, irritability, frustration and impatience. If you stop that process, the mind will become calm and quiet. There may be discomforts in the body but the mind is still pure. The mind even, if you want, can be adjusted to respond in a different direction:
"Oh, so lovely, these kind Buddhists have organized such a retreat to reflect on these important and profound topics. It is great to have such good people in society. Ours. " You feel kindness, solidarity, gratitude; You can even be taken from hell to heaven.
Or you can stop and let your mind be empty, alert and calm. Such a state of mind will not create hell or heaven, but it is alert, sensitive, and calm. If you can keep that state of mind when observing an object, you can apply it to any other object. How much you do, much less depends on how much you train your mind, depending on the level of awareness, intelligence and concentration that you have learned.

My first experience with this was when I had been a monk for a year and a half. I was living in a monastery in northeast Thailand. It is a small monastery branch of the main monastery where my teacher, whom I love and respect, is living. I have confidence and faith in this teacher, but I do not appreciate the teacher at the branch monastery, and the monks here seem to care nothing about meditation. I felt abandoned, and I really didn't find myself suited to what was going on in the monastery. It is like a labor camp. There was a lot of work done by my hands and feet, but my heart was fiercely opposed. I did not become a monk to work. If I want to become an employee I can only return to Australia and work. Work is not what I feel I need to do. However, since this is a new monastery, there is a lot of work to do - a fact that I did not like.
Then my teacher came to visit and I was so happy to meet him. I think I will get some encouragement from people. But when my teacher arrived, the locals came to see him and I could not even approach him. It is natural for him to talk to them. He said and spoke, hour after hour, and at that time we sat in a place like an open-air theater, without walls, with only tin roofs and floors with joined boards.
We were sitting on the floor with planks that weren't flat. My teacher preached to pass the expected time - just like me, preaching and preaching to the lay people - who enjoyed listening to the Dharma. They were so excited that they forgot the other monks sitting there. We only eat one meal a day, in the morning for about 8 hours. That day, we woke up at 3:00 in the morning, and we went up and sat on it all day, so sitting on the floor with nearly 10pm board was really annoying. There are also mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are constantly injected and you are not allowed to kill them; You can brush them away but you are not allowed to kill them. We were hungry, tired and sleepy and I just felt fed up with everything.

Over the past few hours, my mind has become extremely angry, extremely negative, very disappointed and extremely miserable, with so many confused thoughts about what I want - I want to go back and sleep , I'm fed up and hungry ... "At least they have to give me something to drink, a beverage or something ... to chase these mosquitoes ... the pain in my legs .. Why do you have to talk for so long? ... these people, why don't they go home and leave monks alone? ” My mind broke.
Monks have a duty to sit there and not show any unwholesome attitude, just sit there and endure. You may smile, but you are not allowed to show any anger. Because all that is happening in the mind is not shown out so they boil in me. No way out, I was stuck in it. Things got so bad that it seemed like I wanted to come out, suddenly my mind suddenly flashed a bright awareness: "What's going on here?" Everything was just because I was dead. drowning in a state of mind, not aware of what happened. I simply drowned, and then came to a clear perception: "I'm drowning! What is going on here? This is a suffering."
"Yes, why am I so miserable?" I look back on what happened, the mind keeps on humming, the aversion: Not wanting this, wanting that, wanting to get out of the situation , want to go to sleep, want to be alone, want to stay away from these people, this pain, the other mosquitoes - the mind has been in such turmoil. Looking back, I realized that, "Oh, this is suffering, this is how it was created, this is how I created hell. What happens if I stop wanting and don't want to? What's going on? happens if i keep quiet and sit still?
I have experienced different things that I want: I can do without them. Things I don't want: I can tolerate them, they are not bad. By accepting things as they really are, that I cannot change them, I stop my mind-obsessive reactions, reactions that have created everything miserable.
Only by allowing the mind to settle, return to its original state, there is peace. In that situation, nothing changes outside, but inside, experience is a change from the heat to freshness. Just like a walk in the hot heat at noon - 49 degrees, it's awful - then you go into the shade, enter the meditation hall, cool and peaceful atmosphere. That is the difference that happens in the mind.
This is a very important lesson. This is what we need to learn, experience and live throughout our lives. We can do a lot to change and improve the outside world, but we can never control it completely. We must be responsible for our hearts to become free, otherwise the experiences of life will always make the mind become complicated and complicated, creating paradise and hell. We create it, so we can stop it. Mind has the power to be in a free state if we develop this awareness, knowledge of right understanding, and know which values are right. Peace and freedom are the most important things.
Please do not think that by living peacefully you will become irresponsible and surrender, to let everything go. On the contrary, when the mind has peace and clarity, when the mind is free to meet, you will be in the best condition. What you decide to do will come from that peace and wisdom. It will be your best, you will deal with situations smoothly, you will do what you need to do and you will do it in the best way.
I put this issue out for you to consider. This is a choice that you might find interesting. If you have interest, I encourage you to follow it. There is a path and you can go on that path. There are many ways to train and you can choose that training. There are achievements of training and every human being can accomplish these achievements.END=NAM MO SAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THICH CHAN TANH.GOLDEN AMITABHA MONASTERY=AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.23/5/2019.
