Chief Justice, Righteous Mind and Right Concentration..VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=THICH CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.

Generality

We are considering the three ways of learning and how they can help us in daily life, through the practice of the eightfold path. The third class is:
  • Gender
  • Dinh
  • Wisdom
We will apply right speech, righteous karma and righteousness, to develop gender. Now, one can consider the practice of concentration , including the main effort  , mindfulness and right concentration.

The chief  effort is to destroy the negative thoughts and develop the mind that is conducive to meditation.
Mindfulness  is like a mental glue to preserve and not lose something, so it prevents forgetting something:
  • Do not forget the true nature of body, feeling, mind and mind, so they do not distract us.
  • Without losing moral principles, precepts, or if I have received them, it is vow.
  • Do not abandon or forget the object of attention.
If you are meditating, it is obvious that you need to be mindful, so as not to lose your focus. If you're talking to someone, I have to pay attention to that person and what they say.
The  main intention is to put the mind on an object. So when you listen to someone who says, this means that your mind is paying attention to what they say, how they look, how they are behaving, etc. Mindfulness helps us maintain our mind , because it is the mental glue that keeps your mind there, so as not to be kissed or promoted.

Effort

This is the first element in the eightfold path used to develop concentration. I will work hard to destroy delusions and distractions, detrimental to concentration, as well as trying to develop good qualities. In general, if I want to accomplish anything in life, I have to work hard. Everything does not come from silence, and no one says that everything is easy to accomplish, but if I have developed a bit of power through gender practice, regarding how I act, speak and treat This will create the power for the effort to train your mind and emotions.

Real Effort

Diligence is to put energy into harmful, negative thoughts, creating distraction and difficulty, if not impossible, for concentrating. There are three main ways of thinking:
  • Greed
  • Malice
  • Deviant opinions

Greed

Greedy thoughts include jealousy of what others gain, or the joys and material they enjoy. You will think, "How can I achieve these things?" This idea arises from the attachment of attachment. I don't accept that other people get what they don't have, whether it's successful, a beautiful mate, a new car, in fact it can be anything. I always think about it, and it is a very disturbing mood. This will prevent concentration, right?

Perfectionism may belong to this subject, because I always find ways to overcome myself. It is almost envious of yourself!

Evil

Malice is a thought of how to harm anyone, such as, "If this person says or does something that I don't like, I will retaliate." We can think about what we will do or say, when we meet that person next time, and regret that we didn't retaliate when they said something to me. I can't get this out of my mind, and keep thinking about it all the time.

Deviant opinions

The idea of deviation and resistance is, for example, if anyone tries to improve themselves or help others, I think, "They are stupid, what they do is useless. Helping anyone is ridiculous. ”
Some people do not like sports and think that sports lovers and watching football on television, or going to a football game are foolish. . However, there is nothing dangerous about loving sports. The idea that it is stupid or time consuming is a very opposing mood.

Or when someone gives money to a beggar to help them, you think, "Oh, you are so stupid." If you keep thinking about how stupid others are and whatever they do is how ridiculous I will never be able to concentrate on my thoughts. Those are the thoughts that we want to get rid of.

Chief Justice

Righteous effort is to take your energy away from the line of harmful, negative thoughts, and to develop the qualities of goodness. For this, we talk about the so-called "four major needs" in Pali. In the Sanskrit and Tibetan language literature, they are called " four elements to achieve the right mind for renunciation ", in other words to eliminate defects, the so-called "four renunciations of purity":
  1. First of all, we will try to  prevent the negative properties that arise when they are not generated. For example, if it is easy to get addicted to things, you should avoid participating in online movie service, because throughout the day, you will watch all the movies to other episodes. This will be harmful and lead to loss of concentration.
  2. Then we must strive to  eradicate the negative qualities we have . If you're addicted to something, it's best to try to limit it. For example, everyone knows that some people love iPods so much that they can't go anywhere without listening to music, as if they are afraid to face silence, afraid to think about anything, so listen to music continuously. Of course, loud music can be helpful, such as helping you stay alert while driving on the road, or keeping pace when exercising, and light music can help you stay calm while working, but definitely is that music does not help you focus on the opposite person, when talking to them. It is inevitable that it will make you worry.
  3. After that, we need to  cultivate new positive qualities.
  4. Then the effort  to maintain and improve the positive qualities we have available.
It is interesting to look at these factors and try to find a practical application. An example from myself is that I have a very bad habit regarding my website. I have about 110 people working for this site, and they always email me about their translations and proofs. I receive a lot of emails every day. My bad thing is to just download all the emails into a poetry box, instead of sorting them and putting them in the correct poetry boxes, so that the assistant and I can find them easily. It was a very bad habit, because this scandal made it impossible for us to concentrate on our work, because it took time to find emails. So what is the positive personality here? That is to create an email sorting system, so that when an email arrives, it will go into the correct mailbox immediately.

In this example, we have found negativity, a very anti-productive habit, as well as a positive personality. So I have to try to avoid the negativity and create a document classification system, to prevent negative habits from happening again. This is what we mention at a very simple level of practice.

Overcome the Concentration Year of the Mind

Chief effort also requires training to overcome the five obstacles of concentration, which are:

Intention To Chase Any Objects Of The Five Tran

Five ceilings are colors, sounds, tastes, tastes and emotions, which are charismatic. The obstacle that I have to work on is trying to focus on something, such as work, but my mind is distracted by thoughts like "I want to watch movies", or "I want to open fridge.". Here, we are considering sensory pleasures or sensual pleasures, such as wanting to eat, listen to music, etc. When feelings arise, we must try not to pursue these pleasures, so that we can concentrate. God.

Evil

That is the idea of harming anyone. If there is always a bad idea like, "This person makes me hurt, I don't like him, how can I get revenge?", It is a great obstacle to concentration. Try to avoid evil or harmful thoughts, not just about others, but also about yourself.

Kissing And Unhappy

That is when the mind is dull, empty and cannot think clearly. The feeling of drowsiness is when you are sleepy. Must try to fix this. Whether it is drinking coffee or breathing fresh air, I have to try not to fall asleep, but if it's too hard to concentrate my mind, I need to set a limit. If you work from home, "I'll sleep a little, take a break for 20 minutes." If you're in the office, "I'll take a break to have coffee for 10 minutes." Set a resting limit, then return to work.

Election and Regret

The election is when the mind thinks of Facebook or Youtube, or something else. Regret is when I feel guilty, "I feel extremely guilty for doing this or that." These things disturb the mind, and really interfere with concentration.

Lack of Determination and Doubt

The last thing we need to work on is the lack of determination and doubt. "What should I do?", "What should I eat lunch? Should probably eat this. Or should you eat that? ”. Being unable to decide makes a lot of time. I can not concentrate and start working, if the mind is always full of skepticism and lack of determination, it is necessary to make efforts to overcome this problem.

In short, righteous effort is an effort to:
  • Avoid negative and negative ways of thinking
  • Destroy the bad habits and deficiencies that you can have
  • Nurture the good qualities we have, and develop the missing qualities
  • Destroy obstacles to prevent concentration.

Mindfulness

The next aspect of the Noble Eightfold Path, related to concentration is mindfulness:
  • Mindfulness  is simply a mental glue. When you are concentrating, you focus on one object. This attention, mindfulness, prevents abandoning the object.
  • This is  accompanied by awareness  . Vigilance will detect when attention begins to loosen, or when you begin to fall asleep, or fall asleep.
  • Then use  attention , which is how we consider or focus on the central object.
Here, we will pay attention to how we contemplate body, mind, feeling, and mental states. It is necessary to avoid attachment and not to let go of the wrong view of body and feeling, because if you don't let go, the mind will be distracted, and you cannot concentrate. So consider the right and wrong mindfulness forms.

About The Body

When talking about the body, in general this means your true body, the feelings in the body, or the aspects of the body. False perception of the body is to consider your body to be interesting or clean and beautiful. We spend a lot of time distracting or worrying about our appearance, hair and makeup, how to dress, etc. Of course, a clean and beautiful appearance is good, but when it comes to the extreme Assuming that the appearance of the body is a source of joy, and always has to be perfect to attract others, I will not have time to focus on anything more meaningful.

Consider this body realistically. If you sit too long, you will feel uncomfortable and want to move. If you lie down in a position, it will be uncomfortable, and when you switch to another posture later, it will be the same. We are sick, and our bodies are old. It is important to take care of your body, and to be in good health by exercising and eating properly, but things will become a problem if you focus too much on this, with the idea that your body This is the source of long-term happiness.

This wrong mindfulness is what I have to eliminate. We have to give up the idea that our hair is the most important thing, or we must always dress with harmonious colors, and this will bring happiness. We will not cling to these ideas, and cultivate right mindfulness, that is, "Hair and clothes are not really the source of happiness." Thinking too much about them just takes time, and I can't focus on more meaningful things. ”

About Feeling

Here, we are talking about unhappiness or happiness, which in the end is related to the source of suffering. When suffering, we have the so-called "desire", we aspire to end the source of suffering. Similarly, when there is a little happiness, you really crave more happiness. This is merely the source of the problem.

When watching unhappiness is the worst thing in the world, it will create problems with mental concentration. How will it happen? "I'm a little uncomfortable", or "I'm not happy", or "I suffer", so what? Just keep doing whatever you are doing. If you really think your mood is the worst thing in the world, and cling to it, it will become a hindrance to focusing on whatever you are doing.

When you feel happy, you should not worry, wish happiness will increase and last forever. This can happen when meditating, and you start feeling very peaceful, then distract yourself because of how wonderful this feeling is. Or when meeting someone you like, or eating something delicious, wrong mindfulness is clinging to the idea of "This is all too wrong", and is distracted by this. Enjoy it, but don't exaggerate it.

About Mind

If you think that the nature of your mind is full of anger or ignorance, or ignorance, and think that your mind has something wrong or imperfection in an inherent way, it will be difficult to concentrate your mind. We often think of ourselves in terms of not being good enough: "I can't be  like this . I can't be  like thatI  am nothing . ”. Or "I can't understand", though I have never tried to understand the problem. If clinging to these ideas, things will become hopeless, while with proper mindfulness, when thinking, "For the time being, I may not understand, may be confused, but that doesn't mean that. is the nature of my mind ”, then I will have confidence to focus my mind and solve the problem.

ề Center Department

The fourth factor is about mental states, such as intelligence, kindness, patience, etc. Misperception is to think that they are fixed and "I am like that, and everyone must accept me. There is no way to change or cultivate your mental states. ” Right mindfulness is knowing that all these factors not only solidify to some extent, but can be developed and cultivated in this context, to grow concentration.

Self control

Strangely, when analyzing yourself to see how you deal with a very negative mood, or when you feel guilty, you will find yourself clinging to that mood and stuck in it, or with In guilt, I stuck with the mistake I made. Everyone is mistaken. The wrong mindfulness happens when I cling to it, refusing to let go and torturing myself for thinking how much worse I am. Right mindfulness is to understand that the moods will change, because they arise from predestined relationships, and conditions are always changing, nothing exists forever.
A very useful advice we find in Buddhism is simply "master yourself." It's like getting up in the morning, lying in bed and really not wanting to get out of bed, because you're sleepy, and lying in bed is too comfortable. But you have to be self-reliant and get out of bed, right? I have the ability to do this, otherwise half the population will never get out of bed in the morning! The same goes for having a bad mood or feeling slightly down. We can master ourselves, "Just work!", Don't give up, but continue with what you need to do.

Other Aspects Of Mindfulness

In general, mindfulness is really important. It prevents me from forgetting everything. If there are things to do, right mindfulness helps me focus on it. Mindfulness involves memory, so you can remember that the program you like the most will be shown on television tonight, but it is clinging to something that is not so important, and then makes you forget about the important things. than.
If you are practicing something, then there is the right mindfulness to stick with this. If you are exercising, you must continue to practice every day. If you are fasting, you must keep mindfulness about this, so as not to take the piece of cake, when someone asks you to eat it.
Mindfulness is to preserve what you are doing, and not to be distracted by all the marginal things, not important.

Keep Mindfulness With The Family

Many people find it more difficult to keep the mindfulness of family morality than meeting friends or strangers. If that's the case, then the general advice is to be very intentional in the first place. If you're going to meet your relatives, you might think, "I will try not to get angry." I will try to remember that they are very kind to me. They are close to me, and how I treat them will affect their feelings. ” This is very important from the beginning.
We must remind ourselves that they are human beings. I should not just identify them as the mother, father, sister, brother, or whatever relationship you have with them. If you consider them in a certain role, then you react to what they do with the thoughts of a mother or father, along with all the history, expectations and frustrations that you have about them. . It is better to relate to them as between people and people. If they don't have mindfulness about this and still treat themselves like children, then I won't fall into the habit of acting like a child. We will remember that they are a human being, and will not enter the game; because in the end, there must be two people to dance tango.

Recently, my sister visited me for a week. She often slept early and told me "Go to sleep", like you are my mother. However, if I react like a child and say, "No, it's too early. I don't want to go to sleep. I want to wake up, why do you tell me to go to bed? ”, I will only play the same game, and both will be upset, so I have to remind myself that she gives me advice because she worries settled for me, not because she wanted me to be angry. She thought that if I went to bed early, it would be better for me. So we have to try to have a more realistic view of what's going on, instead of just projecting our own ideas.

So before we meet a family member, we can keep mindfulness about our  motivation  , which means:
  • My goal  : the goal is to have a good relationship with the family, who I care about, and they also care for me.
  • Romance  comes: worrying about the family, like people.
Another way to see the problem is that instead of thinking it is a tough ride, consider it a challenge and a chance to grow up: "Can I have dinner with my family without getting angry?" ? ”
And when the family starts to scold you, as parents often do,“ Why not marry? Why not find a better job? Why didn't you give birth? ”(The first thing my sister said when she saw me was“ I need to cut my hair! ”), Then you will realize that they ask such things because they care about me. , and I just need to say, "Thank you, parents, for worrying about me!"
We can also think of their situation, because many of their friends will ask, "What is your son doing? How is your daughter? ”, And they have to socialize with their friends. They do not ask why you are not married for malice, but because they care about your happiness. The first step is to acknowledge this, and appreciate their interest, and if you wish, you can calmly explain why you are not married!
We often embrace things that are completely ineffective, when there is improper mindfulness. It may have been an old story, like, "Why did ten years ago, parents do it?", Or "Thirty years ago, parents said that." We embrace it and don't give anyone a chance, don't let us focus on their current situation. We cling to prejudice that "It's terrible!" Parents are coming home ”, when I decided it would be horrible. It will make me very nervous before dinner! Then I will turn the problem up with right mindfulness, think of it as an opportunity to see how my parents are now, and the opportunity to react to the situation when it happens without prejudice. with the incident.

Practical Tips For Maintaining Mindfulness

How to maintain mindfulness in difficult circumstances? We need to grow up:
  • Intention  - strong intention to try not to forget
  • Familiar  - review the same process, automatically remember mindfulness
  • Awareness  - alarm system, discovered when I took mindfulness.
All of this is based on a caring attitude, when you care about how your behavior will affect yourself and others. If you really don't care about how you act, it won't keep mindfulness, because discipline won't be there. Why should I care? Because you are a human being. Your parents are human. We all want to be happy. Nobody wants to suffer. The way I behave and talk to others will affect their feelings, so care about how you treat people around you.
We need to consider ourselves and our motivation. If you just want to be a good person, let someone else like you be a little childish, a little foolish. The best reason for having mindfulness and maintaining mindfulness is because of caring about the people around you, based on the attitude of caring and worrying.

Dinh

The third aspect in the righteous bowl that we apply to samadhi is called right concentration (yes, it is samadhi). The main intention is the focus on an object. Once you have acquired whatever you want to focus on, mindfulness will remain there, so that you will not lose your object. But first, preserving the object is something that is intended to be mentioned.

We use attention to bring spiritual focus to something. Today, compared to the past, what is happening more often is distraction, so it is never completely focused on anything completely. When you watch the news on television, there is a person in the middle of the screen reading the news of the day, then below, there is a line of words that give other news, and in the corner there may be other information. We cannot pay attention or fully focus on anything. Even if you think you can do many things at the same time, no one, except you as a Buddha, can concentrate 100% on everything you are doing.
Sometimes, when other people talk to me, I pay attention to my cell phone. That is the wrong focus, because people are talking to me, but I don't pay attention to them. Even if you focus on something, it's hard to keep your attention. Now, we are so used to things that change too quickly, and we are used to looking at one after another, so we are very bored. Such mental concentration, focusing only a few moments on this, a few moments at the other, is an obstacle. That is wrong concentration. The ability to concentrate mentally properly means being able to focus on a long-term object when necessary without getting depressed and turning to another subject, because I no longer like the first object .

One of the major obstacles is that I want to be entertained. This goes back to the wrong mindfulness, thinking that temporary pleasure will satisfy you, instead of creating a more longing desire. Social scientists discovered that the more things to do and look at, and the Internet provides this, with unlimited possibilities, the faster, more urgent and stressful we become. When looking at something, you think there may be something more entertaining than that, and afraid you will miss it. Just like that, you continue to watch and not focus on anything. While it's hard to do, trying to simplify life is really a good idea, so you don't have too many things happening at the same time. When concentration is developed, you will be able to increase the scope of what you can cope with.
If there is good concentration, then you can focus on this, then another; but only one object at a time, and not distracted. Just like every visit, a doctor needs to take care of one patient, and fully focus on them, not thinking about the previous patient or the patient. Although a doctor can meet many patients during the day, every time they see a doctor, they always focus on one person completely. Doing so is better for your concentration.
However, it is very challenging. For me, I have to take care of a lot of different things for the website and different languages, etc. It's hard to focus on one thing. Too many things come at once. Those who work in complex careers have the same problem, but the concentration of thought can be developed over time.

Summary

There are many ways to destroy obstacles to concentration. A simple method is to turn off your mobile phone when working, or choose a time of the day to see your email (email) once or twice, so that you can fully focus on what you need to do. Like doctors or professors who work in the office, you can't come to them at any time, because they only receive guests on a limited time. We can and should do the same for ourselves, because it will help us develop the focus of thought.
It is interesting to look at social development. In the past, the main obstacle to the concentration of thought was his mood, the mind of being scattered, daydreaming, etc. Now there is more, and most of them come from outside, like phones. Mobile, Facebook and email. Actually, I have to try not to be stunned by all of these things, and to be able to do so, we have to really recognize the disadvantages of these media. The most obvious thing that many people can experience is that mental concentration becomes shorter and shorter. Twitter has a limited number of characters and the Facebook page is constantly updated. It all works so fast that it creates a bad habit, detrimental to concentration, because you cannot maintain attention on anything; everything must change constantly.END=NAM MO SAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THICH CHAN TANH.GOLDEN AMITABHA MONASTERY=AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.26/2/2019.
