THE SACRED MEANING OF THE URN.VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THICH CHAN TANH.
Thanks to that bowl, I realized one thing: going to practice means to let go of all money, fame, no more problems, so the greatest asset for a practitioner is nothing but three and one. bowl.
The vase is the most valuable asset that will follow them throughout a lifetime, becoming a symbolic object to always remind the will and ambition that the monk always aims for.
In front of my eyes is a shiny stainless steel bowl, which I think in the 21st century, especially in the North, who mainly practice the Northern Buddhism sect may have been "extinct".
Thanks to a good fortune I was able to admire that precious bowl and the sincere sharing of a monk about the great meaning of that small vase.
The Buddha and his disciples lived by going alms from house to house. Their possessions were nothing of value but three shirts and a bowl of pots. Begging for alms is also called "bowl bowl" or "maintenance bowl". The word "Bowl" means utensils to hold food that can only fit enough for a person. Pots and bowls are jars made of stone, china, and clay, which are fully heated and then enameled inside to prevent water from leaking, but not made of gold or all precious metals. If used with precious metals, then it is not the right virtue of the monk.
They have generated the mind to leave home, that is to practice the practice of letting go of all, including the body if necessary and in accordance with the righteous law, which means "to discharge the rich to the poor, to discharge the body to the religion.
Due to the changing living conditions and more favorable conditions for spiritual practice, the terracotta bowl which is quite heavy, making it difficult to move has been replaced by stainless steel, lighter and convenient material. convenient to carry to many places.
Dressing simply with only three and eating and drinking using only a single bowl has a very spiritual and philosophical meaning. That is the Middle Way philosophy that the Buddha imparted to his disciples. That is to say, a practitioner must stay away from two extremes:
The first is to avoid undue bliss by eating food offered by people in a bowl without using jade chopsticks, ivory cups, beautiful high tables and chairs with delicious food.
The second is to avoid extreme asceticism through a bowl of enough food to use, unlike the ascetic sect collecting fruit or leftovers.
The monk gently shared: "Look at the small bowl, but it contains a lot of meaning and merit, both for recipients and for those who offer food."
For spiritual practitioners, eating rice in a bowl has many benefits:
- Mind is free, less defilement.
- Not busy mind and body to earn a living.
Section except the arrogant and arrogant mind
- Except for greed, unable to greedily eat well and eat a lot because whoever gives it to eat, unable to choose, the food is only full of bowls and not more, avoiding the accumulation of real money.
- Have more time to practice.
In addition to its own benefits, eating rice in a bowl also brings benefits to sentient beings such as:
- Create conditions for the donor to eliminate greed, that is to create conditions for them.
- Create the predestined relationship to teach sentient beings.
- Setting the example of a simple life to reduce the desire for wealth.
As soon as he picked food into the bowl, the monk calmly said: “If you go far, you forget the bowl or spoon, you will fast or eat it that day. Because we cannot share other people's dishes and utensils. Food is also picked up only once, to avoid arising the mind of enjoyment. When eating, monks also mix dishes together to no longer distinguish one dish from another, bad food or taste them.
The purpose is to no longer have attachment for the delicious taste, eating time is just a means to feed this four-element body and practice liberation. Whoever gives them will eat them, the monks do not distinguish good or bad food, do not stipulate how the donor must make offerings, they all follow the two words "depending on the conditions".
Thanks to that bowl, I realized one thing: going to practice means to let go of all money, fame, no more problems, so the greatest asset for a practitioner is nothing but three and one. bowl. It is the most valuable asset that will follow them throughout a lifetime, becoming a symbolic object to always remind the will and ambition that the monk is always aiming for. Avoid the passion of the five senses of the world to set foot on the shore of enlightenment and liberation.
The image of the Buddha - a prince, the most respectable investigator, a master of the three realms, living a frugal life with decadent clothing and simple bowls will forever be a lofty image. and most profoundly for those who are awakened by a pure, elegant way of life and for those who are continuing on the path passed by their respectable predecessors.
