Buddhist teachings explain the concept of ghosts

How many ghosts?

In the Buddhist literature, there are many articles to explain ghosts from a Buddhist perspective. Accordingly, the ghost word from the Sanskrit «Mâra» comes out, symbolizing the mental tendencies of confusion and confusion, hindering the practice of a practitioner.

The Lalitavistara (Latitavistara) is a sutta that recounts the life of the Buddha. On the night before he became Buddha, ghosts sent troops to harass. Buddha then used his right hand to touch the ground, causing the earth to tremble and rumble to prove his true enlightenment and also make the funeral disappear.

According to the Suttrayana (Sutrayana) there are four types of ghosts (the four ghosts): The ghost (Skandhamara) is the ghost that forms the basis for the suffering and death that we suffer in samsara. The desire for desire (Klesamara) is the desire, desire, lust, which causes us to commit negative behaviors, create bad karma, shorten human life, bring us into the suffering of samsara; The ghost of death (Mrtyumara) is the destruction, of course the end of birth, the consequence of the compositional nature of all phenomena, that is the law of impermanence; Ghost children (Devaputramara) are ghosts that make us forgetful, distracting, instigating us to cling to the external illusion that hinders the study.

According to Vajrayana (Vajrayana) the four ghosts are defined differently than: Ma shackles are ghosts of attachment and hatred for surrounding objects and phenomena, this ghost is always looking for how to bind us to those things; Ghosts are the three main venom and the fifth year of secondary venom, that is, the primary and secondary desires, unresolved thoughts or disturbing thoughts, invading our minds and causing suffering. for us; Ghost in joy is a ghost in joy, pleasure, contentment with oneself, watching us more than anyone, instigating us to cling to the "results" and the "experience" that meditation has done and for that is sublime, then become proud, refusing to try to practice more; Proud ghost is arrogant, complacent, arrogant, self-conceited, that is the basic nature of a ghost called "I", "I",

Ma reigns in my head

Looking at the classification and the names of these types of ghosts, ghosts are not far away, but right next to each of us. Ma reigns in my head. The ghost lies in our minds, in our flesh, in the functioning of our bodies and minds.

In other words, ghosts do not lie outside of us. Ghosts are lust, frustration, sadness, hunger, clinging, greed, occupation, laziness, dullness, fear, doubt, hatred, comfort, pride, pride selfish, self-satisfied love with one's own "I" ...

In order to make it clear that "ghosts dominate in our heads, without us, there is no ghost", Buddha gave an easy-to-understand example: When we cross the threshold at dusk, we see a snake. I panicked and pulled back. But looking closely, it was just a rope. The snake is in my head. The Ghost is in my mind as well. When we fall asleep, we often dream about «seeing ghosts». I screamed or screamed ... Startled, I didn't see any ghosts.

When I sleep, I close my eyes, lie on the bed and in the dark room, how can I see with my eyes. That view is caused by our minds, the image of the ghost emerging from our subconscious, arising from the disturbing and hidden emotions within us, from our deep karma, from sick obsessions ours, from our passions, our desires, from our attachment to delusions, our anger ...

In the same opinion, the work "Tame the soul" or "The daily moral manual of Buddhists" was compiled by Bhikkhuni ni Thubten Chodron and Venerable Thich Minh Thanh stated, some of the following When he dies, he will be reborn as a devil according to the work he has done in the past.

Many people are very afraid of being harmed by demons but demons can only harm those who have created predestined harm - that is, if they have harmed others in past lives. Fear of the devil is useless. The more you fear the myth, the more it makes the devil come to harm. Sometimes there is no real devil, only an imaginary devil created by the mind of a person so afraid of it; the ghost created by him imagined to be harmful back to him.

When someone feels afraid of demons or being harmed by demons, the most effective remedy is the refuge and the practice of loving kindness. If we visualize the visions of Buddhas, Tonas and Sangha and earnestly thirst for the refuge to take refuge, the demons cannot harm us and the fear will quickly disappear.

People with virtues, demons must be afraid

It is a story that has been widely circulated in Buddhism. The story goes that, during a typhoon and flood, Tu Da Cap Lon (a disciple of the Buddha, a wealthy bourgeois during the Buddha's lifetime) was swept away by the eighteen-dollar reserve water. million gold coins. Then those who borrowed his money, totaling up to eighteen million other gold coins, also stopped paying.

Loneliness was once a great millionaire and now he is a poor person. But it is worth facing the adversity, he continues to do the duty of a guardian, nourishing the monks. If the previous day he was eligible to offer full meals, then today he has nothing, respectfully bring them, so that together they can practice and live day by day.

On the top of the tower on the seventh floor of the building of Tu Da Cap Loneliness is a Tho god. On the occasion, Tu Da Cap Lonely exhausted, Tho god immediately appeared in front of Tu Da Cap Loneliness to advise him not to continue giving alms because gold and silver are treasures of the world, without it life will be extremely destitute.

But no doubt Tu Da Cap Lon alone calmly answered: «Hey Tho! For me, in the most precious life is Buddha, body, speech, wholesome mind, complete liberation, righteous conduct, cessation of greed, hatred, ignorance, and mercy for sentient beings, Also do not fancy anything else! Now ask the Tho god to go away, because in this house there is no room for a Tho god against Buddha, Dharma and Sangha ».

Living in the scene without a certain residence, here and there, the Tho god began to review what he had done and realized that it was bad karma, so he silently regretted it. When the Tho god came before the Thich De to repent. To atone for the sins, Emperor Thich said: «Hey Tho! Now in order to atone for the sins, what must the person do to return the inheritance to the Tu Da Lon Lon "?"

The Tho god is extremely happy to immediately accept the decisions of Emperor Thich to improve. After finding the treasure Tho Thoa gave all to Tu Da Cap Lonely. As a result, soon after, Tu Da Lon Lon suddenly became naturally rich. In addition to recovering the wealth of old wealth, he also had an additional fortune of fifty-four million gold coins.

After that, the Tho god appeared in front of the Buddha to repent, asking him to forgive the evil karma that he had obscured. The Buddha explained to the god of enlightenment: "A great being when he uses the generosity of giving to become fully liberated, no power in this world can stop them, even if the power is strong. that precaution comes from the emperor, comes from the sage or the evil god, comes from the evil or good elves, and even comes from the god of death. ” END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).GOLDEN AMITABHA MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THICH CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.26/7/2020.
