This is what I have heard: At one time, the Buddha was living in the city of Nalanda, [1] in the forest of Baba-lien,[2] with a great assembly of monks of one thousand two hundred and fifty people. . At that time, a wealthy son, named Kien Co, went to the Buddha, bowed close to the Buddha's feet, and sat down to one side. At that time, the wealthy son Kien Co said to the Buddha: "Well done, World-Honored One. May the World-Honored One, bhikkhus, if a brahmin, elder, or layman come, show miraculous powers[4] and display the dharma of the superior person[5]." The Buddha said to Confucianism: "I never taught monks to present spiritual resources, to dharma of superior people, to Brahmins, elders, and lay people. I only teach disciples in a quiet place to meditate on the Way. If there is merit, it should be hidden. If there is a mistake, you should reveal it yourself.” Keen Co, the son of a wealthy man, said to the Buddha: "May the World Honored One, the bhikkhus, If a brahmin, elder, or layman comes, show supernatural powers and display the dharma of the superior." The Buddha again said to Confucianism: "I never taught monks to display divine power, to dharma of superior people, to Brahmins, to elders, to lay people. I only teach disciples in a quiet place to meditate on the Way. If there is merit, it should be hidden. If there is a mistake, [101c] should show it to himself.” At that time, Keen Co, the son of a wealthy man, said to the Buddha: "I have no doubts about the Dharma of superior people. But this Nalanda city, prosperous country, densely populated, if there is present wealth, it will benefit many people. Buddha and Sangha skillfully propagate the Way." The Buddha said to Confucianism: "I never taught bhikkhus to present spiritual wealth, to dharma of superior people, to brahmins, to elders, to lay people. I only teach disciples in a quiet place to meditate on the Way. If there is merit, it should be hidden. If there is a mistake, it should be revealed. Why? There are three types of magic. What are three? One, divine power; two, observing people's minds; three, religious world[7]. “What is magic? This bourgeois son, Bhikkhu-stilts set[8] immeasurable divine power, can turn from one body into innumerable; from innumerable bodies back into one body; whether far, or near, mountains, rivers, cliffs, all are free and without hindrance, as if walking in space. Sitting in the middle of nowhere, sitting like a bird in flight. In and out of the earth just like in water. Or walk on water like walking on land. I smoke, fire, like a big bonfire. Hands touch the sun and the moon. Stand tall to Brahma. If there are elders or lay people who have faith and see a monk displaying immeasurable spiritual resources, standing tall to Brahma, will go to other elders and lay people who have not yet believed, and say: 'I see a bhikkhu. - Stilts show immeasurable divine resources, standing tall to Brahma. ' That elder or layman, who has no faith, says to those who have faith: 'I have heard that there is an isla mantra[9] capable of manifesting such immeasurable miracles.. ., until, stand tall to Brahma." The Buddha said to Kien Co, the bourgeois son: "Isn't it blasphemous for those who do not have faith to say this?" Kien Co replied, "That's really slander." The Buddha said: "Therefore, I do not teach bhikkhus who are present in spiritual sufficiency and dharma, but only teach my disciples in a quiet place to meditate on the Way. If there is merit, it should be hidden. If there is a mistake, it should be revealed. Thus, affluent son, that is the kind of divine sustenance that My disciples manifest. "Why is it called the divine ability to observe people's minds? Here, the Bhikkhu-stilts show immeasurable spiritual contemplation; observe the dharmas that are remembered and thought in the minds of sentient beings; Things done in the dark can also be recognized. If there are bourgeois or laypeople who have faith, see the Bhikkhu-stilts show immeasurable spiritual contemplation; observe the dharmas that are remembered and thought in the minds of sentient beings; [102a] the things that are done in the dark corner can also be recognized, will go to the bourgeois, lay people who do not have other faith, saying: 'I see that the Bhikkhu-stilts show immeasurable spiritual contemplation; observe the dharmas that are remembered and thought in the minds of sentient beings; what is done in the dark can also be perceived.' That elder or layman, who has no faith, says to those who have faith: 'I have heard that there is a mantra called a gandala that is capable of manifesting such immeasurable miracles. .. until, standing tall to Brahma." The Buddha said to Kien Co, the bourgeois son: "Isn't it blasphemous for those who do not have faith to say this?" Keen Co told Buddha: "That's really blasphemy." The Buddha said: "Therefore, I do not teach bhikkhus who are present in spiritual sufficiency and dharma, but only teach my disciples in a quiet place to meditate on the Way. If there is merit, it should be hidden. If there is a mistake, it should be revealed. Thus, affluent son, that is exactly the kind of contemplation that My disciples manifest. “What is the spiritual world? O rich son, if the Tathagata, Chi Chan, and Perfect Enlightenment appeared in the world, with the full ten names, in the midst of gods, men of the world, ghosts or demons, recluses, brahmins, self-realization, then preach to others, with the first, middle and last words are all righteous, meaning pure, full of holy life. If there are bourgeois or laypeople, after hearing it, there will arise faith. When he has faith, he observes in it, thinking: 'We shouldn't live at home. If you live at home, you are bound constantly, you cannot practice pure holy life. Now let's shave off hair and beard, take up the three Dharma robes, leave home to practice the Way, have all the virtues, until we achieve the three wisdoms, eliminate the darkness, and generate the light of great wisdom. Why? It is because of diligence, preferring to live alone in a secluded place, mindfulness and right knowledge, that is. This, rich son, is that of the precepts of spiritual wealth that my bhikkhu shows up." At that time, Keen Co, the rich man's son, said to the Buddha: "Is there any bhikkhu who has accomplished these three divine powers? The Buddha said to his affluent son: "I do not say that most of the bhikkhus have achieved these three powers. But, rich son, one of my bhikkhus in this assembly thought to himself: 'Where is this body, with its four elements: earth, water, fire, and wind, which ceases to be forever? '. That bhikkhu momentarily turned to the heavenly path,[12] went to the Four Heavenly Kings,[13] asked the Four Heavenly Kings: 'This body, with its four elements: earth, water, fire, and wind, is eternal. where is the end?' "O well-to-do son, the other four heavenly kings answered the bhikkhu, saying: 'I do not know where the four great elements cease forever. There is also heaven above me, called Dao-li, the most wonderful and wonderful, with great wisdom.[102b] The other heavens can know where the four great eras will cease forever.' "When the bhikkhu heard this, he immediately followed the heavenly path, went up to the Dao-li heaven, and asked the gods: 'Where is this body, with its four elements: earth, water, fire, and wind, which ceases to be forever?' The Knife-wielding gods replied, 'I don't know where the four great elements cease forever. Above is also heaven, called Diem-ma,[14] the most wonderful and wonderful, with great wisdom. God may know.' Bhikkhu-stilts went up there to ask, but the place still did not know. “In turn, to Tushita, [15] ascending to Hoai Tu,[16] ascending to Tha Hoa Tu At Thien,[17] all said: 'I don't know where the four great eras will cease forever. There is also heaven above, called Brahma-ca-di[18], the most wonderful and wonderful, with great wisdom. That heaven can know where the four great eras are forever annihilated.'The bhikkhu-stilts momentarily directed at the Brahma path[19]. Up here, the bhikkhu asked the Brahma gods: 'Where does this body, with its four elements: earth, water, fire, and wind, cease forever?' The other Brahma replied to the bhikkhu: 'I do not know where the four great elements cease forever. Now there is the Great Brahma King, the Incompetent Conqueror, ruler of a thousand worlds, rich, noble, noble, completely free, capable of creating all things, the parents of all living beings. You may know where the four great elements cease forever.' The elder son, that monk immediately asked: 'Where is that great Brahma King now?' The god replied: "It is not clear where Dai Pham is now. But in my opinion, He will appear momentarily.' Not long after, Pham Vuong suddenly appeared. O rich son, that monk came to Brahma and asked: 'Where does this body, with its four elements: earth, water, fire, and wind, cease forever?' The other great Brahma king said to the bhikkhu: 'I am the great Brahma, the invincible, the ruler of a thousand worlds, rich, noble, noble, noble, completely free, capable of creating all things. animals, are the parents of sentient beings.' That bhikkhu then said to Brahma, 'I don't ask about it. I asked, where are the four elements: earth, water, fire, wind, eternal cessation.' "O well-to-do son, the other Brahma still replied to the bhikkhu: 'I am the Great Brahma King, until, the creator of all things, the parents of all living beings.' Again the bhikkhu said: 'I did not ask about it. I asked, where do the four great eras cease forever. ' Well, son of a rich man, Brahma, the king of three times, cannot answer to the bhikkhu, where will these four elements cease forever. Then, the great Brahma King took the monk's right hand, pulled it out to a secluded place, saying: 'Bhikkhus, now the Brahma gods all say that I am the foremost wisdom, nothing is unknown. , not found. Therefore I do not answer the Master, because I do not know, do not [102c] see, where these four elements are forever annihilated.' Then he said again to the bhikkhu: 'You are a great fool to leave the Tathagata and go and question the gods about this. You should go to the Blessed One and ask about this. As Buddha said, keep it in mind.' Again said to the bhikkhu: 'Now the Buddha is living at Sāvatthi, in the solitary garden of Ascension. Please go there and ask.' 'Now, old man, a bhikkhu suddenly disappeared from the Brahma world, and in an instant like a man with his arms stretched out, came to Sāvatthi, in the lonely garden, the forest of iguanas. A bhikkhu came to me, bowed at my feet, sat to one side, and said to me: 'World-Honored One, where are these four elements now, earth, water, fire, and wind, which cease for ever?' Then I said: "Bhikkhu! Just like a merchant carrying an eagle[20] into the sea. In the middle of the sea, let the falcons fly to the East, West, South and North in the air. If the bird sees land, it stops on it. If not seen, the bird flies back to the boat. Monks, you too. You go up to Brahma to ask for that meaning, and in the end, without success, you return to Me. Now I will make you achieve that meaning.” Then say the verse: Why not the four elements: Earth, water, fire and wind?[21] Why are they not gross, subtle, And long, short, beautiful, and ugly? Why is there no name-and-form, Eternal extinction, no residue?[22] Should answer: invisible consciousness, Immeasurable, self-shining[23]; It ceases, the four great cessations; Crude, subtle, beautiful, ugly. In this place name and form are destroyed, Consciousness is destroyed, everything is destroyed.[24] At that time, Keen Co, the rich man's son, said to the Buddha: "World Honored One, what is the name of that bhikkhu? How do I memorize it?" The Buddha replied: "That bhikkhu's name is Ati-hi. Please keep that in mind.” At that time, Kien Co, the affluent son, listened to the Buddha's teachings, happily served.
