STORY-DA-NA. This is how I heard: Once, the Buddha was living in the cave of the Seven Leaves, on the Mount of Bhikkhus, in the city of La-dyad, with the great assembly of one thousand two hundred fifty-one hundred and fifty-one hundred and fifty hundred monks. At that time, in the city of Rajasthan, there was a lay follower named Tanda-na, who loved to go for a walk, and every day he went out of the city and went to the Blessed One. One day, he looked at the shadow of the sun and thought to himself, "This is not the time to pay homage to the Buddha. At this time, the Buddha was still in meditation at the retreat and the monks were also meditating. Let's go to the forest of the female Pham Chi Otem-ba-li, wait for the right time to come to the Buddha to pay respects and meet the monks who respectfully visit." In the forest of the female Brahma at that time, there was Pham Chi named Nicuda and five hundred disciples gathered in one place, loudly discussing, all day long talking only frivolous things, obstructing the path. Or a national discussion. Or talk about war warriors. Or discuss national peace. Or discuss the affairs of the gods, the affairs of the people. Or talk about carriages, parks, forests. Or discuss bed mats, clothes, meals, women. Or talk about mountains and sea, turtles fighting. That is, they only talk about things that are impediments to the way and end of the day. When that brahma had just far away, he saw the shadow of the lay follower Tanda-na walking by, and immediately ordered: "Let's be quiet. Why? Because a disciple of the recluse Gotama is coming from outside. Among the white-clothed disciples of the recluse Gotama, he was in the upper class. He must have come here. Be quiet." The Phams were all silent. The layperson Tanda-na went up to Brahma, greeted him, sat to one side, and said to him: "My teacher, the Blessed One, likes to be quiet and doesn't like commotion. Unlike you and your disciples, you like to be in the middle of a loud conversation. But it's all just nonsense, useless words." Pham said again: “Did the recluse Gotama ever discuss with everyone? How do people know that a monk has great wisdom? Your teacher usually prefers to be on the border. Just like a blind buffalo that eats grass, content only where it sees it. So is your teacher Gotama. Just love your own independent opinion, so you like the place where there are no people. If your teacher comes here, we'll call you a buffoon. The recluse Gotama often claims to be a great wise man, but one sentence is enough to make the same secret and to be silent. For example, a tortoise is fully immersed in its shell so that it is safe. But I only need one arrow to make it impossible to escape.” At that time, the World-Honored One, who was in the retreat, by his heavenly ear, heard this conversation between Pham Chi and a layman, and immediately left That Diep cave and went to the female forest of Pham Chi Otem-ba-li. When Pham Chi had just seen the Buddha walking from afar, he told his disciples: "Be quiet. The recluse Gotama wants to come here. Don't get up to greet them, pay respects to them, or invite them to sit down. Only one place for him to sit. When he's finished sitting, you should ask: Ascetic Gotama, what dharmas have you taught his disciples so far so that they can be safe, pacified, and practice pure holy life? At that time, as soon as the Blessed One had come to the garden, Brahma suddenly arose, greeted the Blessed One, and said, "Come here, Gotama. Please come here, Sammon. Long time no see, now what are you coming here? Please take a seat at the front." At that time, the Blessed One sat down, smiled happily, and thought to himself: These fools cannot control themselves. Previously made a pact with each other but in the end did not keep it all. The reason for that is because the Buddha's divine power causes their evil minds to naturally dissipate. Layman Tsanda-na bowed down to the Buddha's feet and sat to one side. After greeting the Buddha, Brahma also sat to one side and said to the Buddha: "The recluse Gotama has always taught his disciples what dharmas will make them peaceful, happy, and pure and holy?" Buddha said: "Stop brahmin. My Dharma is extensive. The things that I have so far taught my disciples to be happy, to practice the holy life, are not things you can keep up with.” Then the Buddha said to Pham Chi: "Even if even the dharma that your teacher and his disciples practice, pure or impure, I can speak." At that time, these five hundred disciples of Brahma all raised their voices and said to each other, "The recluse Gotama has great power and great spiritual power. People ask for their own meaning, but I explain them back to others!" Pham Chi said to the Buddha: "Blessed is Gotama! Please differentiate." Buddha said to Brahma: "Hey Brahma, listen, listen. I will speak." Pham Chi replied: "Nice to hear." Buddha said: “Your operations are all vile. For example, take off your clothes to be naked, or cover with your hands, or do not accept food in a pot, do not accept food in pots, do not accept food between two walls, do not accept food between two people , do not accept food between two knives, do not accept food between two pots, do not accept food from the family eating together, do not accept food from a pregnant home, do not accept food from a home where a dog is seen at the door, do not accept food from a house full of flies, do not accept invitations to eat, do not accept food from a known speaker, do not eat fish, do not eat meat, do not drink alcohol, do not eat with two bowls , one meal, one swallow up to seven swallows, receive food added, no more than seven extras, or eat one meal a day, or two days, three days, four days, five days, six days , seven days eat one meal, either eat only vegetables, or only eat rice grass, or only drink rice water, or eat only sesame, or eat brown rice, or eat cow dung, or eat deer dung, or eat roots, branches, leaves, fruits, seeds, or eat of fallen fruit, or clothe themselves, or clothe themselves with owls, or clothe themselves with bark, or wrap themselves with grass, or elk skins, or have hair on their heads, or wear braids, or clothe thrown at the grave , or often raised his arms, or did not sit on the bed, or often squatted, or shaved off his hair, or lay on thorns, or lying on fruit, or lying naked on cow dung, or bathed three times a day times, or shower three times a night. In short, taking countless hardships to torture the body. Nikeda, what do you think? If you practice such conduct, is it worthy to be called the pure Dharma?" Nikuda replied, "That Dharma is pure, not impure." Buddha said: "You say pure, I will show you what is unclean from your purity.” Nicuda said: "Very good, Gotama! You keep talking, I'll listen." The Buddha said: "Those people, while practicing asceticism, their minds often think: If I do this, everyone will make offerings, respect, and worship. That is the structure. That ascetic, after receiving the offerings, was passionately holding on to it, clinging to it, not letting it go, not knowing how to separate, not knowing how to get out. That is the structure. The ascetic, as soon as he saw the shadow of someone coming, sat down to meditate together. When no one was sitting, he was free to lie down. That is the structure. That ascetic, if he hears the righteous cause of others, refuses to acknowledge it. That is the structure. That ascetic, if anyone asks immediately, regrets and refuses to answer. That is the structure. That ascetic, whenever he saw someone making offerings to a Sa-Mon, a Brahmin, he scolded and prevented him. That is the structure. That ascetic, if he saw that a recluse or a brahmin ate anything that could reproduce, he would come to reproach him. That is the structure. That ascetic had impure food, refused to give it to others, but was greedy to eat it alone, did not see his own faults, did not know the path to renunciation. That is the structure. That ascetic person praises himself well, denigrates others. That is the structure. That ascetic kills, steals, commits adultery, is double-tongued, speaks evilly, lies, speaks falsely, is greedy, envious, and has a perverse view. That is the structure. That ascetic who is lazy, forgetful, does not practice meditation, has no wisdom, is like an animal. That is the structure. That ascetic person has high tribute, conceited, conceited, and conceited. That is the structure. That ascetic who has no faith, does not reciprocate, does not uphold the pure precepts, does not diligently listen to people's advice, often make bad friends and do bad things. That is the structure. That ascetic, who holds a lot of anger, loves to do tricks, relies on his own understanding, to find out the good and bad of others, often holds wrong views and prejudices. That is the structure. Nikeda, what do you think? Ascetic practice as above, is it worth calling pure? Nikuda replied, "It is impure, not pure." The Buddha said: "Now I will show you the pure and untainted part of your dhamma for you to understand." Pham said: "Please speak". Buddha said: "Those ascetic people, if they don't think that we practice like this, they will receive offerings, respect, and worship. It is the unstained ascetic practice. An ascetic, if given an offering, has a mind that is not covetous, understands detachment, and clearly knows the path of renunciation. It is the unstained ascetic practice. The ascetic practices zazen as usual, not because there are people without people that change. That is pure asceticism. Ascetic practitioners, if they hear someone speak of the righteous, they will gladly accept them. That is pure asceticism. Ascetic people, if they meet someone who asks immediately, they will gladly answer. That is pure asceticism. When an ascetic sees someone making offerings to a recluse or a brahmin, he rejoices on their behalf, but does not rebuke him. That is pure asceticism. Ascetic people, if they see a Sa-Mon, a Brahmin eating something that can be reborn, don't come to criticize him. That is pure asceticism. An ascetic who encounters impure food, has no regrets in his heart, meets a pure food, his mind is not infatuated, sees his own faults, knows how to escape. That is pure asceticism. The ascetic does not praise himself or criticize others. That is pure asceticism. An ascetic does not kill, does not practice religion, does not engage in sexual misconduct, does not use two tongues, does not speak harshly, no lies, no fabricating, no greed, no envy, no wrong views. That is pure asceticism. Those who practice asceticism but diligently do not forget, prefer to practice meditation, cultivate a lot of wisdom, are not stupid like animals. That is pure asceticism. People practice ascetic without high tribute, arrogant, conceited. That is pure asceticism. Those who practice asceticism but have faith, practice retribution, keep pure precepts, study diligently, often make friends with good people, and keep good things forever. That is pure asceticism. People practice asceticism without holding anger, without trickery, without relying on their own knowledge, without looking for the bad of others, without holding on to wrong views and without boundaries. That is pure asceticism. What does Pham think? Such austere dharma, is it worthy to be called a pure and unblemished dharma?” Nicuda replied, "Indeed, it is a pure and unblemished ascetic practice." "Then Brahma asked the Buddha: "Is austerity to this extent called first-class solidity?" Buddha said: "No! That is the outer asceticism.”.” Nikuda replied, “May the Buddha reveal the core.”? Buddha said: "Listen. I will tell." Pham Chi said: "Yes. World-Honored One, I wish to hear." The Buddha said: "O Brahma! An ascetic person does not kill himself, does not teach others to kill, himself does not steal, does not teach a thief, himself does not commit adultery, does not teach adultery, does not himself Lie Mindfulness, Equanimity is the same. That is the core asceticism.” Pham Chi said to the Buddha: "Please teach me the meaning of solid asceticism". "The Buddha said: "Brahma, listen, listen, I will tell." Pham Chi replied: “Yes, yes. World-Honored One, I wish to hear." The Buddha said: "Brahma, an ascetic who does not kill himself teaches others not to kill; he himself does not steal, he teaches others not to steal; he himself does not commit adultery, but he also teaches others not to commit adultery. Lying also teaches people not to lie. He spreads his loving-kindness in one direction, and then the other directions too. The loving-kindness is generous, equal and immeasurable, throughout the whole world, without any resentment. The same is true of compassion, joy, and equanimity. The other ascetic can know what happened in countless previous lives, or in one life, two lives, or countless lives, the destruction of the country, or the past and future lives, all of which can be seen. I also know that I have been born in that race, have such a name, eat like that, live so long, Suffering and suffering like that, being born from there, being born from here like that. Things like that from countless lifetimes are remembered. That is called the indestructible asceticism of Brahma.” Pham Chi said to the Buddha: "What else is called the most ascetic?". Buddha said: "Brahma, listen, listen, I will tell." Pham Chi replied: “Yes, yes. World-Honored One, I wish to hear." The Buddha said, "Those who practice asceticism, but do not kill themselves, teach others not to kill; they themselves do not steal; they teach others not to steal; they themselves do not commit adultery, and they teach others not to commit adultery. Not to lie also teaches people not to lie. He spreads his loving-kindness in one direction, and the other directions, too. The loving-kindness is vast, all-encompassing, incomparable, immeasurable, without hatred, throughout the world. The same is true of compassion, joy and equanimity. “The ascetic knows for himself the matter of countless past lives, one life, two lives, up to innumerable lifetimes, country, success or failure, faithful fate, all of which he sees and knows. Again, I see for myself: I was born in that race, with such names, such as eating and drinking, having such a life span, experiencing such pain and pleasure, being born from here, being born from there. Thus, remember all the events of countless eons. He by his pure divine eye considers the living beings that die here and there, beautiful and ugly, where they are directed to good or bad, depending on the behavior that they fall; all see all know all. “Again, I know that sentient beings with unwholesome bodily actions, unwholesome speech, unwholesome mental actions, slandering the sages, and perverting their beliefs, will fall into the three evils after the breakup of their bodies. Or there are sentient beings with good body, good speech, good mind, not slandering the sage, practicing righteous faith, When the body breaks up, after death, one is reborn in the heaven and the human realm. With the pure celestial eye, seeing where all living beings have been born, they will know it all. That is called the supreme asceticism.” The Buddha said to Brahma again: "Brahma, in this dharma there is an even more superior dharma that I often teach to the shravakas. They practice the holy life through that dharma.” At that time, the five hundred disciples of Brahma said loudly to each other, "Now we see that the Blessed One is the Supreme One, and my teacher is not equal." Then the layman Tanda-na said to Pham Chi: "You said earlier that if we see Gotama coming, we will call him blind buffalo. Now that the Blessed One has come, why don't you call. Just now, he said that just one sentence was enough to make Cudama and the squash have to keep quiet. Like a tortoise that collects its whole shell so that it is safe, I need only one arrow and there is nowhere to hide, Why don't you bring a sentence together with the Tathagata secret?" Buddha asked Pham Chi: "Did you really say that?" Answer: “Yes”. The Buddha said to Brahma: "Haven't you heard the immortals of Brahma say that the Tathagatas like to live in a quiet place in the mountains and forests, just as I like in a quiet place today, not like your Dharma, just in a quiet place. noisy, useless talk all day long?” Pham Chi said: "I have heard that the Buddhas of the past preferred a quiet place, living alone in the mountains, like the Blessed One today. Unlike the Dharma, we like to be in a noisy place, talking about useless things to end the day.” Buddha said: "Don't you think that the recluse Gotama can teach Bodhi, can subdue himself and can also subdue others; can pacify oneself and can make others pure; be able to cross to the other shore by himself and bring others to the other shore; liberate oneself and be able to set others free; Can you make your own extinction and can cause others to be saved?” At that time, Pham Chi got up from his seat, bowed his head, touched the Buddha's feet with both hands, called himself by name, and said: "I am Pham Chi Nicuda. I am Pham Chi Nicuda. Now, I take refuge in myself and make offerings at the feet of the Blessed One." Buddha said to Pham Chi: "Enough is enough, stop. As long as your mind is clear, that is respect.” Pham Chi bowed again at the Buddha's feet, then sat down to one side. The Buddha said to Brahma: "Wouldn't you say that the Buddha preached the Dharma for the sake of self-nourishment? Don't mind like that. If there is any benefit, I will give it all to you. The Dharma spoken by me is the most wonderful, for the destruction of unwholesome deeds and the growth of kusala." Then the Buddha said to Pham Chi: "Wouldn't you say that the Buddha preached the Dharma out of fame? To be respected, to be first, to have dependents, in order to have a large crowd, to preach the Dharma? Don't start that mind. Now those who depend on you are still your dependents. The Dharma I speak of is for the destruction of akusala and the growth of kusala." Then the Buddha said to Brahma again: "Wouldn't you say that the Buddha put you in the unwholesome, dark gathering? Don't think so. Unwholesome aggregates and dark aggregates, you should remove. I speak good and pure Dharma for you." Again he said to Brahma: "Don't you think that the Buddha banished you from the assembly of good dharmas, from the gathering of purity and whiteness? Don't think so. You stay in the good dharma gathering, the pure white gathering, but diligently practice. For you, I say, gather good and pure, gather purity, eliminate unwholesome actions, and increase kusala." "At that time, the five hundred disciples of Brahma were all righteous and righteous, listening to the Buddha's teaching. Seeing this, Ma Ba-week thought: "Five hundred disciples of Brahma are carrying a righteous mind to listen to the Buddha's teachings, perhaps I have to come and break that mind." The demon then used his power to destroy the good will of those five hundred disciples. The Buddha said to the lay follower Tanda-na: "These five hundred disciples of Brahma have righteous hearts and minds, and listen to me speak the Dharma. The Three Weeks Angel ruined that idea. I want to return, you come with Me.” The Buddha immediately took his right hand and led the lay follower Tandana to put it in his hand, then returned from the void. Layman Tanda-na, Pham Chi-Ni-ca-da and five hundred disciples, after hearing what the Buddha said, joyfully served.
