Why does Lord Quan Yin hold a willow lobe in his hand and a pure vase of nectar in his hand?VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.
Avalokitesvara means observing the cries of beings in the world to save them from suffering. So wherever sentient beings suffer, He appears to save them. Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is the embodiment of compassion, so he can reincarnate to help sentient beings in any situation. There were many times when he incarnated as a woman to save the world, so people often called him Buddha.
Avalokitesvara , also known as Quan Am, Quan Am (to avoid the name of King Ly The Dan of the Tang Dynasty) means one who contemplates the world, hears all sounds, often bears the image of Bodhisattva Thien Thu Thien Nhan. (thousand hands, thousand eyes), or a woman wearing white robes, left hand holding a pure jade vase containing orange juice, right hand holding a willow branch, sitting or standing on a pink lotus, but actually he still has 33 Incarnations, different names.
Avalokitesvara is praised for having a compassionate heart, having magical power to help disaster, saving sentient beings, and protecting women.

Quan Am is praised for having a compassionate heart, having magical power to help disaster, saving sentient beings, and protecting women.
According to the Amitabha Sutra, people who are born in the Land of Ultimate Bliss, though they have not yet attained Sainthood, still do not have male or female marks. In addition, the A Ham Sutra also says that a woman with five obstacles cannot become a Buddha… Yet, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara embodies a woman. What does he mean?

But there is a statue that all of us know that is pure Quan Am. This statue of Avalokitesvara is a picture of a woman standing on a lotus, holding a willow branch in her right hand and a pure vase in her left hand, in a jar of nectar. But why is the bodhisattva a woman? According to the Amitabha Sutra, people who are born in the Land of Ultimate Bliss, though they have not yet attained Sainthood, still do not have male or female marks. In addition, the A Ham Sutra also says that a woman with five obstacles cannot become a Buddha… Yet, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara embodies a woman. What does he mean?
Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara is the embodiment of Compassion, but in this world there is no more sincere and profound love than a mother's love for her child. Therefore, Avalokiteshvara incarnates as a kind mother of mankind, or of all sentient beings. Even though a mother is busy with work, once she hears her baby crying, she gives up everything to run over to comfort her child.
So is Avalokiteshvara, no matter where he is busy with teaching, once he hears the cries of sentient beings, he immediately appears to comfort him. Therefore, we call her the gentle mother of all sentient beings. The mother always listens to the sobs from the hearts of the wild cubs who are immersed in the vast ocean of suffering, to come to comfort and rescue so that all sufferings are dissipated.
His right hand holding a willow branch is a symbol of patience. The left hand holds a pure vase containing nectar, which symbolizes compassion.
He used willow branches to sprinkle cool water of nectar on sentient beings. Why use willow branches to show patience? Willow is a tree that is both flexible and soft. When it encounters strong winds, it bends in the direction of the wind. When the wind stops, it returns to its original position. If it is as hard as the branches of an iron tree or a knock-out tree, the wind cannot shake it. Once it is hit by a strong wind, it must be broken. As weak as a willow branch, it just hangs down to the wind, and thanks to its flexibility, it is skillful without losing its position. In other words, although we are following the scene, we are not influenced by the scene.
Therefore, the willow branch is symbolic of patience . Patience here does not mean that anyone can do anything or that anyone can listen to whatever they say, but patience is skillfully depending on people to guide them in their own way or position. People who are patient may seem weak at first, but in fact they have extraordinary strength. They have gone beyond the limits of mortal humans and they have conquered their emotions as well as their own instincts.
Usually, people who curse us get angry, those who hit us help. It's everyone's instinct to defend themselves. Being scolded but not angry, being beaten but not being helped is a difficult thing to do. Living by emotions every day, instinctively seeing such natural reactions, we consider it reasonable and reasonable. If we see people being scolded but don't get angry, then we get angry, when it's easy for them, and think of them as weak and cowardly. No wonder they have surpassed us with patience, they have stood on top of us, and down here we are still conceited.
He used willow branches to sprinkle cool water of nectar on sentient beings.
The nectar is a very clear, cool and sweet-smelling water, obtained from the dew. The word orange is sweet and the word nectar is read backwards from the word lo, ie dew. When we are hot and dry, if the drops of nectar penetrate our neck, we will hear sweet and cool. The nectar represents the bodhisattva's compassion.
When sentient beings are burned by the fire of affliction and earnestly seek help from the Bodhisattva, he will bring water of compassion to extinguish and bring people coolness and peace.
Currently we are living in the fire house of the three realms and the fire of our defilements is burning continuously. If it weren't for the bodhisattva's drop of compassion, we would all surely die in the furnace of affliction. Remember that compassion is selfless love, does not discriminate between relatives and is true and equal love. Compassion not only saves people in danger, but also brings us boundless peace.
Because of the unsurpassed preciousness of nectar, the bodhisattva had to store it in a pure vase. The pure vase symbolizes the three pure karmas, namely body, speech, and mind. If we embrace compassion and want to save sentient beings, but our bodies, mouths, and minds are not pure, it will be difficult for us to realize that compassion.
For example, natural disasters and floods in the world. If sentient beings, out of compassion and compassion for those in need, bring money and material gifts to them. But if that being's mind is not pure, it will easily be tarnished by fame and profit. Therefore, in order to practice compassion, it is important that the body, mouth, and mind be pure.
In addition, in order to bring nectar to cool living beings, the Bodhisattva must use willow branches as a means. Why? Because sentient beings in this life have such deep karma, they rarely see the right. They only live according to their ego and live for their desires, so it is difficult for anyone to satisfy them. So there are people who are ready to help them when they are in trouble, but they are still not grateful. People who are willing to be compassionate to save sentient beings, if they lack the virtue of patience, that kindness will hardly be perfected.
Whenever we pay homage to Avalokitesvara, we always keep in mind his two basic virtues, compassion and patience, to apply it to ourselves.
Therefore, a person who learns the path of compassion must first practice patience, and when patience is tamed, then he can begin to practice compassion. Having not yet practiced patience, but hastily practiced compassion, not only can we not practice compassion, but we easily generate anger. Therefore, one must have willow branches and then dip them in nectar to cool sentient beings.
Compassion is not necessarily only in the mind of bodhisattvas or in the minds of practitioners, but it is also in the hearts of all sentient beings. Therefore, anyone can be a savior of sentient beings, if they develop compassion. In other words, compassion is not a heirloom reserved for spiritual practitioners, but it is common to all mankind. In any situation, in any case, it is possible to practice compassion, if there is compassion in our hearts.
Finally, we see that compassion is immeasurable. Therefore, every time we worship the statue of Avalokitesvara, we always keep in mind his two basic virtues, compassion and patience, to apply it to our own selves. If so, then the new worship is really useful and extremely necessary.END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).WORLD VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST ORDER=BUDDHIST DHARMA WHEEL GOLDEN MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.19/12/2021.
