Angulimala Sutta (Angulimala sutta)
Like this I hear.
On one occasion the Blessed One was staying at Savatthi, Jetavana, in the monastery of Anthapindika.
At that time, in the territory of King Pasenadi, Kosala, there was a robber Angulimala, a hunter, bloodstained, murdering, brutal, without compassion for sentient beings. Because of it, villages become no villages, towns become no towns, states become no states. Since it always kills people, it carries a wreath made of human fingers.
Then in the morning the Blessed One put on his robes, took his bowl and robe, and entered Savatthi for alms. After begging for alms in Savatthi, having finished his meal, clearing his mat, taking his robes and bowls, he returned and walked on the road leading to the robber Angulimala. Cowherds, herdsmen, farmers, and pedestrians saw the Blessed One walking on the road leading to the robber Angulimala, and when they saw this, they said to the Blessed One: "Sammon, do not go on that road. This road, Monk, is on this road the robber Angulimala, who is a hunter, whose hands are bloody, murders, brutal, has no compassion for sentient beings. Because of it, villages become no villages, towns become no towns, states become no states Since it is always killing people, it wears a wreath made of human fingers. people, twenty people, thirty people, forty people gathered, gathered, and went together. However, they still fell into the hands of the robber Angulimala.” Hearing this, the Blessed One kept silent and continued on his way.
The second time, the cowherds, the herdsmen, the farmers, the passersby said to the Blessed One: "Sammon, do not go that way... it fell into the hands of the robber Angulimala." . The second time, the Blessed One kept silent and continued walking.
The third time, the cowherds, the herdsmen, the farmers, the passersby said to the Blessed One: "Sammon, do not go that way... it fell into the hands of the robber Angulimala." . The Blessed One kept silent and continued walking.
The robber Angulimala saw the Blessed One walking from afar, and after seeing it, he thought: "How wonderful! How rare! This road, up to ten people, twenty people, thirty people, forty people, five people ten men gathered, gathered, and went together; nevertheless, they fell into my hands. What power do I have to kill this recluse!" Then the robber Angulimala took his sword and shield, put on his bow and arrow, and followed behind the Blessed One.
Then the Blessed One manifested supernatural powers in such a way that the robber Angulimala, even with all his speed, could not keep up with the Blessed One, who was walking at normal speed. Then the robber Angulimala thought: "How wonderful! How rare! I used to chase the running elephant and catch up with it, chase the running horse and catch up with it, chase the moving cart and catching up with it, chasing the running deer and catching up with it. Now, even if I go with all my speed, I can't keep up with this recluse going at normal speed." It said to the Blessed One:
-- Stand back, Sammon! Stand still, Sammon!
-- I'm already standing, Angulimala! And stand still!
Then the robber Angulimala thought, "These Sakyamuni recluses are those who speak the truth and accept the truth. And this ascetic, even as he was walking, said, "I'm already standing, hey Angulimala! And you stand still.” So let's ask this recluse. Then the robber Angulimala with a verse said to the Blessed One:
-- The passerby says: "I'm already standing",
I stand, You say: "Why don't I stand?"
Sam, I ask about this meaning,
Why do you stand still, but I do not stand?
-- Angulimala, I am already standing.
To all living beings, I give up my staff and sword,
But you , sentient beings, have no self-control.
Therefore, I stand, but you do not stand.
-- For a long time I have respected, the Great Sage,
Now this recluse has entered the Great Forest.
Soon, I will eliminate evil,
After hearing your verse.
Having said that, the robber immediately dropped his sword,
Throwing his weapon into the deep abyss,
The robber bowed down at the feet of Thien Tho,
Right there, asked to be ordained.
The Buddha of compassion, the Great Sage, the
Teacher of the Human World, along with the Heavenly World,
he answered: "Good-returning-stilts".
Uy Duc Male-stilts are confirmed by him.
Then the Blessed One, accompanied by the venerable Angulimala as a recluse, set out on a journey to Savatthi, and in succession, the Blessed One arrived at Savatthi. Here the Blessed One was staying at Savatthi, Jetavana, at Anthapindika's monastery.
At that time, at the door of King Pasenadi's inner palace of Kosala, a large number of people gathered, raised their voices, and loudly said: "Great King, in your territory, there is a robber named Angulimala, a worker. hunting, bloodstained hands, murder, brutality, no compassion for sentient beings Because of it, villages become no villages, towns become no towns, states become no states. Because it always kills people, it wears a wreath made of human fingers. Great king, let's get rid of it."
Then King Pasenadi of Kosala, with about five hundred horses, early in the morning went out of Savatthi, went to the monastery, rode wherever it was possible to ride, then he got off the chariot, walked to the Blessed One, and after arriving, bowed down to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. The Blessed One said to King Pasenadi of Kosala who was sitting to one side:
-- Great King, is King Seniya Bimbisara of Magadha angry with you, or the Licchavis of Vesali, or some other enemy?
-- Venerable Sir, King Seniya Bimbisara of Magadha is not angry with me, nor the Licchavis of Vesali, nor any other enemy king. Lord, in my territory, there is a bandit named Angulimala, a hunter, whose hands are bloody, murderous, brutal, without compassion for sentient beings. Because of it, villages become no villages, towns become no towns, states become no states. World-Honored One, but I can't get rid of it (napatisedhissami).
-- Great King, if you see Angulimala shave off his hair and beard, put on a kashāya robe, go forth from the home life, renounce home, live in homelessness, renounce killing, renounce taking what is not given, renounce lie, eat one meal a day, live the holy life, keep the precepts, practice the good Dharma. What will the king do with Angulimala?
-- Venerable sir, will I bow down, or get up, or offer me a chair to sit on, or make the four offerings of Angulimala, i.e. clothing, food, seating, and medicine for illness, or we say protect and uphold the law. But, World-Honored One, from where can a person who breaks precepts and does evil deeds become precept-keepers and knows how to control them?
At that time the venerable Angulimala was not far from the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One stretched out his right arm and said to King Pasenadi:
-- Your Majesty, this is Angulimala.
King Pasenadi of Kosala immediately panicked, trembled, his hair stood up. The Blessed One knew that King Pasenadi of Kosala, frightened, terrified, his hair standing on end, said to King Pasenadi of Kosala:
-- Have no fear, Great King! Have no fear, Your Majesty. Here, there is nothing to fear for the Great King.
Then the panic, terror, and hairs of King Pasenadi, of Kosala, were dissolved. Then King Pasenadi of Kosala approached Venerable Angulimala and, after arriving, said to Venerable Angulimala:
-- Venerable, is the Venerable Angulimala?
-- Yes, King.
-- Venerable sir, what family is your father's family? What family lineage does the model belong to?
-- Your Majesty, my father belongs to the Gagga family, and my mother belongs to the Mantani family.
-- Venerable sir, may Venerable Gagga Mantaniputta be happy. I will try to take care of the four offerings of clothes, food, seating, medical treatment for the venerable.
At that time, Venerable Angulimala followed the conduct of the forest, went for alms to eat, and lived with only three robes. Then Venerable Angulimala said to King Pasenadi of Kosala:
-- Well, just now, Your Majesty, I've had enough of three y.
Then King Pasenadi of Kosala approached the Blessed One and, having arrived, bowed down to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, King Pasenadi of Kosala said to the Blessed One:
-- How wonderful, venerable sir! How rare, World-Honored One! How can the World-Honored One subdue those who cannot, calm those who cannot, and cause extinction of those who cannot. Venerable sir, for a son who could not be subdued with a stick or with a sword, the Blessed One was able to subdue him without a stick or a sword. World-Honored One, we must go now. We have many jobs, many responsibilities to do.
-- Dear Great King, now you should do what you think is timely.
Then King Pasenadi, of Kosala, arose from his seat, bowed down to the Blessed One, turned his right body towards him, and departed.
Then Venerable Angulimala, in the morning, put on his robes, took his bowl and robe, and entered Savatthi for alms. While going for alms from house to house in Savatthi, Venerable Angulimala saw a woman giving birth, very critical and painful. Seeing this, the venerable thought: "How miserable all living beings! How miserable all living beings!" Then the venerable Angulimala, after going for alms in Savatthi, after the meal, on the way back to begging for alms Returning, went to the Blessed One, after arriving, bowed down to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting down to one side, Venerable Angulimala said to the Blessed One:
-- Venerable Sir, here, in the morning, I put on my robes, take my bowl and robe, and go to Savatthi for alms. Venerable Sir, while going for alms from house to house in Savatthi, I saw a woman giving birth, very critical, in pain. Seeing this, I thought: "How miserable all sentient beings! How miserable all sentient beings!"
-- Go to Savatthi, Angulimala, and say to that woman, "Since I was born, I have never intentionally killed the lives of living beings. that with that truth she was safe, and gave birth safely!"
-- World-Honored One, if I did so, I would be intentionally lying. World-Honored One, I have intentionally killed the lives of many sentient beings.
-- Then, Angulimala, go to Savatthi, and when you arrive, say to the woman: "Woman, because I have never, since I was born a saint, never intentionally killed my life. life of sentient beings, may she be safe with that truth and give birth safely!"
-- Yes, venerable sir.
The venerable Angulimala, after obeying the Blessed One, went to Savatthi, and after coming to said to the woman, said: "Dear sister, since I have been born as a saint, up to now, I have never intentionally killed my life. life of sentient beings, may she be safe with that truth, and give birth safely!" And the woman is safe, the birth is safe.
Then Venerable Angulimala, living alone, detached, undistracted, ardent, diligent, and soon, realized himself with direct knowledge, attained and abided in the present unsurpassed goal of Brahma. For this purpose, good men leave home, renounce the family, and live without family. "Birth has ended, the holy life has been accomplished, what should have been done has been done, from now on, there is no going back in this life." He knows so. And so, Venerable Angulimala became an Arahant again.
Then Venerable Angulimala in the morning put on his robe, took his bowl and robe, and went to Savatthi for alms. At that time, a lump of earth, thrown by one person, fell on Venerable Angulimala's body, then a stick thrown by another person fell on Venerable Angulimala's body, and then a pebble thrown by another person fell on Venerable Angulimala's body. fake Angulimala. Then Venerable Angulimala, with a hole in his head, bleeding, a broken bowl, and torn outer robe, went to the Blessed One. The Blessed One, seeing Venerable Angulimala coming from afar, saw this and said to Venerable Angulimala: "Be patient, brahmin! Be patient, brahmin! You are reaping within now the retribution of the karma that you should have had to boil in hell for many years, many hundreds of years, many thousands of years".
Then Venerable Angulimala lived in solitude, meditating, feeling liberated and happy, and in the meantime uttered the following sentiments:
"Whoever is distracted first, then not distracted, Shines
bright in this life, like the moon freed from the clouds,
Whoever does evil deeds, is stopped by good,
Bright in this world, like the moon freed from the clouds.
Young Male-stilts faithful to Buddhism,
Shining bright in this life, like the moon escaping from the clouds.
May our enemies listen to the Dharma talk!
May our enemies be faithful to Buddhism!
May our enemies receive the righteous Dharma,
Peace of mind and body, sharing with everyone.
May our enemies, from the Forbearance,
from the Praise, have no hatred in their hearts.
Time to listen to Dharma, practice Dharma.
Such a person does not harm me,
Nor does anyone else harm.
He will witness the supreme purity.
Protecting everyone, those who are greedy for others,
Like someone who directs water, guiding the flow of water,
Like an arrow maker that bends the arrow's body,
Like a carpenter who bends a tree.
The wise are self-disciplined, self-disciplined,
Some are controlled by rods, rods, and hooks,
But I alone gain nothing without a stick or a sword.
(By such rank).
My name is Harmless, I killed before,
Now I have a righteous name, because I did not harm anyone.
Before I was named Angulimala,
Being swept away by waterfalls, I took refuge in the Buddha.
In front of his hands stained with blood, the name Angulimala,
See we take refuge, the cord of birth and death,
Doing such karma must give birth to evil beasts,
When receiving karma retribution, do not owe us any enjoyment.
A fool has no mind, indulges in distraction,
But a wise man keeps without distraction,
As in possession of property, supreme, supremely precious, Do
not indulge in distractions, do not indulge in sensual pleasures.
Remaining undistracted, always meditating,
Attaining great bliss, immeasurable generosity,
Good and future, I come, do not go astray,
No one advises me to follow evil thoughts.
Among the well-taught
truths , Truth we follow, ultimate truth,
Good and future we come, don't go astray,
No one advises us to follow evil thoughts,
Three proofs we prove, Buddha's principles are fulfilled.END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).WORLD VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST ORDER=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA.SYDNEY.30/12/2021.
