Ta nguyện đời sau, khi chứng được đạo quả Bồ đề, nếu có chúng hữu tình nào mà pháp luật nhà vua gia tội phải bị xiềng xích, đánh đập, hoặc bị giam giữ trong chốn lao tù, hoặc bị chém giết, hoặc bị nhiều tai nạn nhục nhã, thân tâm chịu nhiều nỗi khổ, buồn rầu, bứt rứt. Hễ nghe đến danh hiệu ta thì nhờ sức oai thần phước đức của ta đều được giải thoát tất cả những nổi sầu ưu bi khổ não ấy”.
Quý Phật tử hãy nghiệm lại trong cuộc sống giữa đời thường, mình luôn cho rằng mình tự tại, an ổn nhưng với cặp mắt giác ngộ của Đức Phật thì thấy chúng ta đang bị gông cùm, xiềng xích trói buộc. Đó là gông cùm gì? Chẳng hạn khi chúng ta khởi lòng tham danh lợi, tiền tài hay khởi sân, si… tức là mình đang bị trói buộc ở trong ngục tù của vô minh. Trong kinh Đức Phật diễn tả, bị vua chúa bắt bớ thì sau một thời gian, cùng lắm là vài chục năm thì được thả, còn bị tiền tài, danh lợi, sắc đẹp, vợ con trói buộc thì không biết ngày nào có thể thoát ra được.
Trong Kinh Tương Ưng bộ có ghi: Một thời Thế Tôn trú ở Kosala, một số đông các Tỳ kheo vào thành khất thực. Sau khi thọ thực, các Tỳ kheo trở về, đến đảnh lễ Đức Thế Tôn và thưa rằng:
-         Bạch Đức Thế Tôn, trên đường đi khất thực, chúng con thấy vua Ba Tư Nặc nước Kosola bắt trói một số người, một số bị trói bằng dây, một số bị trói bằng kềm kẹp.
Thế Tôn sau khi biết sự việc liền nói lên bài kệ:
          Bậc có trí nói rằng
          Trói vậy không vững chắc
          Trói bằng sắt dây gai
          Kềm kẹp bằng gỗ mộc.
          Đam mê các dục lạc
          Với châu báu trang sức
          Và tâm tư vọng tưởng
          Hướng về con và vợ
          Bậc có trí nói rằng
          Trói vậy thật vững chắc.
Dẫu bị trói bằng xiềng xích thì đến một lúc nào đó cũng thoát ra được. Còn nếu bị trói bằng nhà lầu, xe hơi, vợ đẹp, con xinh, vàng bạc châu báu thì muôn đời muôn kiếp không xuất ly được. Cho nên trong tinh thần nhà Phật, dù khổ hay vui, dù giàu hay nghèo thì tất cả mọi người chúng ta đều bị trói buộc trong ngục tù thế gian, trong khổ đau, vọng tưởng. Trong vô lượng kiếp, Đức Phật giống như các chúng sanh cũng bị trói buộc bởi những vật chất thế gian… Vì vậy khi thành tựu đạo quả, Ngài mới nói rằng bây giờ Ngài đã thực sự ra khỏi ngục tù. Vậy thì trong giờ phút thực tại này, chúng ta nghiệm lại xem có phải mình bị trói buộc không? Bị vô minh, tham, sân, si trói buộc, người nghèo bị trói bằng dây sắt, người giàu bị trói bằng dây vàng, mà thường bị trói bằng dây vàng thì con người lại chịu và không muốn thoát ra. .
Trong Kinh Tương Ưng Bộ, tập 2 có ghi một câu chuyện. Một thời Thế Tôn ở Savathi, dạy các Tỳ kheo:
-         Khổ lụy, trói buộc, này các Tỳ kheo, là lợi đắc, là danh vọng và sự cung kính. Các ông nghe chăng lúc trời gần sáng có một con dã can tru lớn tiếng?

Tại các chỗ ấy, nó cảm thấy tai họa bất hạnh. Cũng vậy, này các Tỳ kheo, ở đây, Tỳ kheo nào bị lợi đắc, bị cung kính và danh vọng chi phối, tâm bị xâm chiếm thì vị ấy không thoải mái khi ở chỗ hoang vắng, khi ở dưới gốc cây, lúc đi đứng ngồi nằm. Tại các chỗ ấy, vị Tỳ kheo cảm thấy tai họa, bất hạnh. Như vậy, này các Tỳ kheo, khổ lụy, trói buộc là vì lợi đắc, vì danh vọng và sự cung kính.
Đức Phật dạy rằng, những lợi đắc, danh vọng và cung kính mà người khác mang lại cho mình thì đó là khổ chứ không phải vui, vì lúc đó chúng ta bị trói buộc, không thảnh thơi tự tại. Chẳng hạn quý Phật tử thấy người xuất gia được an ổn tự tại là bởi ít người biết đến. Nhưng sau một thời gian tu tập, trưởng thành rồi thì danh vọng tự nhiên kéo đến, bị cái khổ lụy này trói buộc, nhiều khi mình muốn đi đâu xa cũng không được. Vì vậy nếu thầy Tỳ kheo nào mà dính mắc vào danh vọng, cung kính, lợi đắc thì cũng như con dã can bị bệnh, không được thoải mái, tự tại khi ở chỗ hoang vắng, lúc nào cũng lo sợ tai họa bất hạnh ập đến.
Trong Kinh Tương Ưng Bộ: Một thời, Thế Tôn trú ở Rajagaha tại Veluvana. Lúc bấy giờ, Hoàng tử A Xà Thế, sáng chiều đi đến hầu hạ Đề Bà Đạt Đa với năm trăm cỗ xe và cúng dường các món ăn trong năm trăm bàn. Một số đông các Tỳ kheo đi đến bạch Thế Tôn về chuyện ấy. Thế Tôn dạy:

Cũng vậy, chừng nào Hoàng tử A Xà Thế sáng chiều còn đi đến hầu hạ Đề Bà Đạt Đa với năm trăm cỗ xe và cúng dường các món ăn trong năm trăm bàn thì này các Tỳ kheo, đối với Đề Bà Đạt Đa, chỉ có sự tổn giảm trong thiện pháp, không có sự tăng trưởng. Như vậy, khổ lụy là lợi đắc, là cung kính và danh vọng, các ông cần phải học tập.
Khi người ta cúng dường nhiều, hậu hĩ thì đó cũng là sự trói buộc, các bậc Thánh rất sợ. Người xuất gia khi được cư sĩ cung kính cúng dường nhiều chừng nào thì càng phải dè dặt chừng ấy, giống như đi trên lớp băng mỏng, không cẩn thận là rớt xuống nước. Nếu mà ngồi vui thích nhận sự đảnh lễ cung kính cúng dường của cư sĩ thì giống như hòn đá mài dao, dao ngày càng bén mà đá thì ngày càng mòn, tức là thiện pháp bị tổn giảm, đến khi phước hết thì họa đến chứ không có gì là vui sướng hết. Ở đây nhằm mục đích là dạy cho các vị Tỳ kheo mới học, còn những vị đại Bồ Tát có giới đức lớn thì ngược lại, các Ngài phải làm ruộng phước cho chúng sanh. Chẳng hạn như Lục Tổ khi được Ngài Pháp Đạt đảnh lễ, Tổ bảo: “Ông đảnh lễ mà không sát đất thì chi bằng đừng lễ”, tức là khi đó, Ngài nhận lễ là để gieo ruộng phước cho chúng sanh, đây là tiêu biểu cho các bậc đại Bồ Tát đi vào cuộc đời, còn chúng ta là bậc sơ cơ, mới học thì cần phải dè dặt.
Trong Kinh Tứ Thập Nhị Chương, Đức Phật dạy: “Người bị ràng buộc bởi vợ con, nhà cửa còn quá hơn lao ngục. Lao ngục còn có thời kỳ phóng thích, vợ con không một ý niệm xa lìa. Một khi tâm thích về sắc đẹp thì đâu còn sợ gì đến gian nguy. Dẫu cho có sự hoạn họa nơi miệng hùm, lòng cũng đành chịu vậy”.
Trong lời nguyện thứ mười này của Đức Phật Dược Sư, khi chúng ta bị lao ngục, khổ lụy… thì chỉ cần  nhớ lại ánh sáng tự tâm, tức là Đức Phật Dược Sư Lưu Ly thì chúng ta thoát khỏi cảnh này, còn không là bị dính mắc. Lao ngục còn có ngày phóng thích, còn dính mắc vào sắc đẹp rồi thì khó vượt qua được, nhưng một khi đã kiến tánh, ngộ nhập tri kiến Phật rồi thì bứt phá ra rất dễ. Cho nên nhà Phật hướng cư sĩ quy y Tam Bảo thì không được phạm giới tà dâm, nghĩa là chỉ một vợ một chồng là đủ, còn thêm nữa thì khó thoát khỏi lao ngục này. Vào thời nhà Tống, ông Tô Đông Pha đã có sáu người vợ rồi mà vẫn muốn lấy thêm một người vợ thứ bảy nữa. Sau khi cưới về thì Thiền sư Phật Ấn vì muốn khai thị cho ông nên đến bảo Tô Đông Pha cho Ngài mượn người vợ thứ bảy một đêm. Dù rất bực mình và khó chịu nhưng vì là chỗ bạn bè thân thiết nên Tô Đông Pha vẫn cho vợ tới. Tối hôm đó, Thiền sư Phật Ấn đưa người phụ nữ đó vào buồng, Ngài bày ra bảy cái lò lửa rồi bước qua bước lại, cả đêm như vậy, đến gần sáng thì Ngài để người phụ nữ đó về. Sau khi về, cô vợ kể lại câu chuyện cho Tô Đông Pha thì ông hiểu rằng, Ngài Phật Ấn làm vậy là muốn cảnh tỉnh mình, bảy người vợ như bảy cái hỏa ngục, cứ ở trong đó hoài thì đến ngày nào mới thoát ra được.
Cũng trong Kinh Tứ Thập Nhị Chương, Đức Phật dạy: “Xét ra, người hành đạo ví như một người chiến đấu cùng muôn người, mang giáp ra cửa, ý hoặc khiếp nhược, hoặc nửa đường thối lui, hoặc chống cự đến chết, hoặc đắc thắng mà về. Sa Môn học đạo phải giữ chắc tâm mình, tinh tấn lướt tới, chẳng sợ cảnh trước, phá diệt bọn ma, chứng được đạo quả”.
Đức Phật dạy người hành đạo, tu tập theo con đường giác ngộ giải thoát không phải chuyện đơn thuần, có nghĩa là dù mình thắng hàng ngàn quân địch mà không thắng được chính bản thân mình thì cũng là không. Người hành giả nếu thật tâm tu tập thì phải chiến đấu với rất nhiều loại ma, mà chúng ta có thể thấy rõ qua cuộc chiến đấu của Đức Phật trong bốn mươi chín ngày đêm trước khi thành đạo. Khi chúng ta dấn thân vào con đường này thì sẽ gặp rất nhiều chướng nạn. Quý vị thấy các thầy đi kinh hành tuy an ổn như vậy nhưng trong lúc đó họ phải đối diện với không biết bao nhiêu tập khí phiền não xấu ác ập đến, vừa phải phá dẹp, vừa phải tu tập chuyển hóa thì các nghiệp chướng này mới dần dần tiêu trừ.
Một người hành đạo giống như một người mang giáp ra cửa chiến đấu với muôn người. Trước kia chúng ta lao theo những nhục dục của thế gian thì không thấy gì, còn bây giờ khi phát tâm xuất gia thì tất cả những chướng duyên sẽ đến. Lúc đó, hoặc chúng ta khiếp nhược, hoặc nửa đường rút lui không tu nữa, hoặc chống cự cho đến chết… Ở đây, người xuất gia hay người tại gia đều như nhau cả, khi tu tập đến một thời gian mà không có niềm vui với đạo, không có niềm tin với pháp tu của mình thì đa phần đều thối lui cả. Có nhiều trường hợp Phật tử ban đầu thì tin tưởng pháp môn mình theo học, nhưng sau một thời gian không có kết quả liền thối chí. Lúc đó nghe nói có pháp môn kỳ đặc như được ông Thầy nào đó rờ đầu thì an ổn, hạnh phúc, hay uống nước được kiến tánh… thì lại tin và chạy theo liền. Đức Phật dạy muốn an ổn và hạnh phúc chúng ta phải tu tập để chuyển hóa ngay từ nơi nội tâm của mình chứ đâu phải do rờ đầu hay uống nước mà được. Nếu ngày xưa chỉ cần rờ đầu hay uống nước mà được an ổn thì Đức Phật đã có thể cứu được dòng tộc của Ngài trước nạn vua Lưu Ly rồi, đến Ngài Mục Kiền Liên là thần thông đệ nhất đã dùng thần thông để cứu dòng họ Thích mà cũng không cứu được trước sức mạnh của nghiệp. Cho nên an ổn hạnh phúc hay không là do nơi mình. Muốn được hòa bình thì bản thân mỗi người trên thế giới đều không còn tham sân si. Lập đàn tràng hay làm các việc phước thiện … chỉ là phương tiện tạm thời thôi, còn việc rốt ráo là ở bản thân mỗi con người. Đức Phật dạy rất rõ rằng Ngài chỉ là bậc đạo sư dẫn đường, nếu chúng ta nghe và đi theo thì chúng ta được hạnh phúc, hết khổ hay không là do mình.
