KALAMA Sutta: Buddha's Teachings to the KALAMA. KALAMA SUTTA: The Instruction To The Kalamas. Kalama Sutras KALAMA PEOPLE IN KESAPUTTA COME TO LISTEN TO THE BUDDHA 1. This is what I heard. Once the Buddha, while preaching in the country of Kosala where there was a large community of monks, he entered a small province inhabited by the Kalamas, named Kesaputta. The Kamala (tribe) are the inhabitants of Kesaputta: "The Blessed One Gotama, a monk, the son of the Sakyans (Shakyamuni), on his preaching tour in Kosala, he came to the small province of Kesaputta. The Buddha's popularity was spread in the following way: The Blessed One was indeed a perfect being, he was fully enlightened, he was full of knowledge and practice, he is excellent, he understands the worlds, no one can compare with him, he transforms people for good, he is the master of gods and men, he himself has clear understanding through direct experience. The Blessed One laid down the Dhamma, good at the beginning, good in the middle, and good at the end, this Dhamma has meaningful words and messages, and it's all perfect; (through his life,) he proved that the life of a monastic is completely pure, and noble. It is a good thing that we meet such perfect beings. 2. The Kamala were the inhabitants of Kesaputta, then they went to the residence of the Blessed One. When he arrived, some people paid homage to him, then sat aside; a number of people exchanged greetings with him, and, at the conclusion of a memorable friendly conversation, they sat aside; some people clasped their hands to pay homage to him, then they sat to one side; some gave him their names and families, and then they sat aside; some people say nothing, then they sit aside. The KALAMA at KESAPUTTA asked the Buddha to teach 3. The Kamala people, the inhabitants of Kesaputta, sat to one side and said to the Blessed One: "Venerable One, there are some monks and Brahmins, visiting Kesaputta. introduced, presented, and explained their teachings; and the teachings of others were despised, reviled, and severely criticized by them. In other subjects, they visited Kesaputta. They also only introduced, presented, and explained their own teachings; and the teachings of others were severely despised, reviled, and criticized by them. Ton, we have doubt, there is uncertainty regarding these monks and brahmins, who's telling the truth and who's lying?" STANDARD DISCLOSED (NOT USED) 4. "Hey Kalamas, it's right when you have doubt, there's uncertainty; Uncertainty arises when your mind senses something suspicious. Come here, Kalamas. Do not accept based on the following: what you have heard over and over again; or based on tradition; or based on rumour; or based on scripture; or based on conjecture; or based on an accepted fact; or based on superficial judgment; or based on a bias (about a pondered idea); or based on a likely viewer; or based on 'a monk is his teacher'. Hey Kalamas, when you yourself know the following: 'These things are bad; these things are reproached; these are condemned by the wise; through practice and observation, these lead to suffering and illness,' you should reject them. Greedy, Hate, and delusion 5. "Hey Kalamas, what do you think? When someone has greed, is this good or bad for them?" - "World-Honored One, it is harmful." "Hey, Kalamas, when someone has greed, whose mind is overwhelmed by greed, whose mind is defeated by greed, this person will go to murder, steal, commit adultery, and lie; this person also instigates others to do the same. These things will make them suffer and sick for a long time, won't they? - "World Honored One, that's right." 6. "Hey guys Kalama, what do you think? When someone has anger, Is this beneficial or harmful to them?" - "Worship, venerable sir." - "People of the Kalamas, when someone has anger in their heart, their mind is overwhelmed by anger, their mind is overwhelmed by anger. anger is defeated, this person will go to murder, steal, commit adultery, and lie; this person also incites others to do the same. These things will make them suffer and sick for a long time, won't they? - "Venerable Sir, yes." 7. "Hey Kalamas, what do you think? When someone is delusional, is this good or bad for them?" - "World-Honored One, it is harmful." "Hey, Kalamas, when someone has delusion, their mind is overwhelmed by delusion, their mind is defeated by delusion, this person will go to murder, steal, commit adultery, and lies; one also incites others to do the same. These things will make them suffer and sick for a long time, won't they? - "Venerable Sir, yes." 8. "Hey Kalamas, what do you think? Are these (above) good or bad?" - "Venerable sir, bad stomach." "To be criticized or not to be blamed?" - "Venerable sir, be blamed." - "Condemned or praised by the wise?" "Venerable sir, condemned." - "Through practice and observation, do these lead to suffering and illness? Or how do these burn your mind?" - "Through doing and observing, these lead to suffering and sickness. Therefore, these things burn our minds here." 9. "Therefore, Kalamas, we said, what we said before, 'Come, Hey Kalamas. Hey Kalamas, when you yourself know the following: "These things are bad; these things are reproached; these things are condemned by the wise; through doing and observing, these things are condemned. this leads to suffering and sickness," you should reject them.' Criteria for Acceptance (For Use) 10. "Come here, Kalamas. Hey Kalamas, when you yourself know the following: 'These things are good; these are not reproached; these are praised by the wise; through doing and observing, these lead to happiness and benefit,' you should do and accept them. NO Greedy, NO HATE AND NO LOVE (NO PARTICIPATION) 11. "Hey Kalamas, What do you think? When someone has no greed, is this good or bad for them?" - "Worship, venerable sir." - "People of the Kalamas, when someone has no greed, their mind is not greedy. not overwhelmed by greed, their mind not overcome by greed, this person will not kill, steal, commit adultery, and lie; This person also advises others to do the same. These things will make them happy and beneficial in the long run, won't they? - "Venerable Sir, yes." 12. "Hey Kalamas, what do you think? When someone has no anger, is this good or bad for them?" - "World-Honored One, it is beneficial." "Hey, Kalamas, when someone has no anger, their mind is not overwhelmed by anger, their mind is not defeated by anger, this person will not kill, steal, commit adultery, and lie; This person also advises others to do the same. These things will make them happy and beneficial in the long run, won't they? - "Venerable Sir, yes." 13. "Hey Kalamas, what do you think? When someone is devoid of delusion, is this good or bad for them?" - "World-Honored One, it is beneficial." "Hey, Kalamas, when a person is not deluded, his mind is not overwhelmed by delusion, his mind is not defeated by delusion, this person will not go to murder, not steal, no commit adultery, and do not lie; this person also advises others to do the same. These will make them happy and benefit in the long run, right? - "Venerable sir, yes. " 14. "Hey Kalamas, what do you think? Are these (above) good or bad?" - "Worthless, venerable sir." - "To be blamed or not to be reproached?" - "Blessed One, not to be blamed." - "Got up. judgment or praise by the wise?" - "Praised, venerable sir." - "Through practice and observation, do these lead to happiness and benefit? "Therefore, Kalamas, we said, what we said before, 'Come here, Kalamas. Do not accept based on the following: what I have heard over and over again; or based on tradition; or based on rumour; or based on scripture; or based on conjecture; or based on an accepted fact; or based on superficial judgment; or based on a bias (about a pondered idea); or based on a likely viewer; or based on 'a monk is his teacher'. O Kalamas, when you yourself know the following: "These things are good; these things are blameless; these are commended by the wise; by doing and observing, these things lead to happiness and benefit," you should do and accept them.' FOUR WAYS TO LIVE HAPPY (LIFE IN FOUR WAYS: FOUR WAYS: Compassion and Compassion) 16. "Hey, Kalamas, disciples of the Noble Ones live as follows: this person has no greed, no anger, no delusion, they have clear understanding and awareness, kindness, in this person's mind is spreading everywhere, in the most (of the four directions); the same is true in the second direction; also in the third direction; likewise in the fourth direction; the same is in (direction) above, (direction) below, and (direction) horizontally; (because of the human life in which there are all living things, everywhere, and living in the whole world), benevolence, in this person's heart is spreading everywhere, along with joy, vast, without limited, without hatred or malice.
