Giving Alms Without Attachment to Appearances, The Merits Are As Many as the Ten Directions of Space. The Buddha asked: "Subhuti! Can the space in the East be thought of?". Subhuti replied: "World Honored One! It cannot be thought of." The Buddha continued to ask: "Can the space in the West, South, North, above, below, and the four corners be thought of?" Subhuti replied: "World Honored One! It cannot be thought of." The Buddha taught: "Subhuti! Bodhisattvas who give alms without attachment to appearances will gain blessings as numerous as the ten directions of space, meaning they are so numerous that they cannot be thought of." The Buddha used the ten directions of space to exemplify the blessings of those who give alms without attachment to appearances. The Buddha taught that Bodhisattvas who give alms without attachment to appearances, or in other words, who practice almsgiving in accordance with Prajna wisdom, will gain pure, immaculate blessings as numerous as the ten directions of space, without end. What are impure, impure blessings that have an end? And what are pure, immaculate blessings that have no end? There were two poor families, both in the same situation, both had an accident in their house. Both went to two wealthy families to borrow money. One wealthy family had a greedy and profiteering heart, so when they offered the money, they demanded interest. The second wealthy family had a compassionate heart, and felt sorry for the poor who had met with the accident, so they lent it for free, without thinking of gratitude or interest. On time, both families who had the accident returned the money to the two wealthy families. The wealthy family was greedy, and received the interest, but it was gone in a few days. So the two sides no longer had any benefit for each other. The second wealthy family, because of his benevolent heart, helped people without seeking fame or profit, so the poor family remembered him with gratitude and respect forever. When the country was invaded, both wealthy families evacuated. The greedy family could not find anyone to help them; they even asked their brother to borrow money from them before, but he could not. This is an example of the end of the defiled blessings (using new greed to make blessings). On the contrary, the family of the benevolent person, who has received favors from the poor in the past, voluntarily sacrifices to help them forever without counting the cost. This is an example of the endless pure and immaculate blessings (using a compassionate heart to do good deeds). In short, if the practitioner uses a defiled mind (greed, anger, ignorance, etc.) to do Buddhist work, he will only enjoy the impure and impure blessings of humans and gods, which will have an end. On the contrary, if the practitioner uses a pure mind (compassion, wisdom, not seeking fame and profit, etc.) to do Buddhist work, he will enjoy the endless pure and immaculate blessings of the Buddha.
