THE BIRTH SUTRA. (The Story of the Buddha's predecessor) Jàtaka 11. STORY OF THE GOOD Deer (Lakkhana forerunner) Humans have moral virtues..., This story, when in Truc Lam, near Vuong Xa citadel, the Buddha told about Devadatta -Multi. The story of Devadatta will be told until he became a bandit in the Forerunner of Khandahala (no. until being swallowed up by the earth in Chapter Sixteen of Samud-davanija Forerunner (No. 466). At one time, Devadatta asked for five conditions, but could not, so he broke the Sangha harmony, brought five hundred monks to stay at Gayàsisa. Then, when the wisdom of those bhikkhus was mature, knowing this, the Master said to his first two disciples: - O Sariputra, your five hundred bhikkhus are delighted with the attainments of Devi. -Badatta, went with him. Now their minds have been tamed. Go there with many bhikkhus, teach them the Dharma, enlighten them about the Way and the Fruit, and bring them home. - According to the Blessed One, Venerable Sāriputta went there and preached the Dharma to them to make them enlightened about the Way and the Fruit; The next day, when it was just dawn, the venerable one brought the monks back to Truc Lam. After returning, the Elder Sāriputta paid homage to the Blessed One. While standing here, the bhikkhus praised the Elder to the Blessed One as follows: -Venerable sir, brilliant and brilliant is our elder Dharma brother, the Dharma General, with five hundred Billions-- surrounded by stilts went back. Devadatta lost all his followers. "Bhikkhus, it is not only now that Sariputra is resplendent with splendor when he is surrounded by relatives and friends, but in the past it was equally brilliant! The bhikkhus asked the Blessed One to clarify this matter. The Blessed One clearly presented the following past story. * Once upon a time, in the country of Ma-kita, in the city of Vuong Xa, a king-Mak-kita was reigning. At that time, the Bodhisatta was born as a deer, grew up, and lived in the forest with a herd of a thousand deer. The Bodhisatta gave birth to two deer, named Lakkhana (Good omen) and Kala (Black). When he was old, the Bodhisatta said to his two sons: - My son, I am now old, you should take care of the deer. Then the Bodhisatta gave five hundred deer to each one. From then on, the two deer took care of the herd. In the country of Machida, in the season of ripe rice, when the rice is in full bloom, there are many dangers to the deer herd. For the purpose of killing the rice-eating animals, villagers dig pits, plant spikes, set up stone traps, set traps and other traps. Many of the injured deer had to die. The Bodhisatta, knowing that it was the time when the rice was fully ripe, called his two sons together and said: "My son, now is the time when the rice is ripe and full, and many deer have suffered. I am old now and will use any means to stay in one place. As for you, take your deer, hide in the rocky paths in the forest, wait until the rice is harvested, and come back! They obeyed their father's instructions, leaving with their herd of deer. The villagers know their way. In these days, deer climbed mountains; in this day they came down the mountain so they hid in secret places, here and there along the way, to shoot and kill them innumerable. Kala deer, with his stupidity, does not know when to go, when not to go, just take the deer in the morning, afternoon, at dusk, at dawn, across the village gate. And the farmers either openly or lurking here and there kill them, causing many deer to crash. Thus, with his stupidity, deer Kala causes many deer to be in trouble, the rest go to the forest with it very few. As for Lakkhana deer, thanks to his wisdom, intelligence, skill, knowing when to go and when not to go, he does not pass by the village gate, does not go during the day, does not go at dusk, at dawn, but only take the deer away at midnight. Therefore, not a single deer was in trouble, and they went with him into the forest. They live here for four months, when the rice has been harvested, they come down the mountain. Kala, on the way back, repeats the previous foolish act, causing the rest of the deer to crash, once again, only he returns. The deer Lakkhana did not harm a single deer, and surrounded by five hundred deer, went back to his parents. When the Bodhisattva saw his two sons coming home, thinking of the deer, he uttered this verse: A virtuous man Receives a reward and welcomes, See Lakkhana return, Head of relatives, Watch Song -la this With kin of destruction. So, The Bodhisatta welcomed the baby deer, lived there for the rest of his life, and then followed his karma. * The Master said: - Sariputra is not only shining today with relatives around, but in the past it was also so bright. As for Devadatta, it is not only today that his relatives are destroyed, but also in the past. After giving this Dhamma talk, comparing the two stories, and combining them, he concluded with the identification of the Forefathers as follows: - At that time, the deer Kala was Devadatta, the group its retinue is Devadatta's retinue; the deer Lakkhana is Sariputra; The mother deer is Rahula's mother and the father deer is Ta. -ooOoo- 12. STORY OF THE DELAY OF THE BANK (Nigrodhamiga's predecessor) Living with Nigrodha..., This story, while at Jetavana, the Master told about the Elder Cumarakassapa's mother (Kuma-la Ka-lettuce) . It is said that when she was the daughter of a rich millionaire in the city of Vuong Xa, she was full of good roots to put an end to her actions, and lived her last life like a lamp in a pot, her heart shining with the hope of attaining A-- la-han. Since knowing about herself, she is unhappy in family life, and wants to leave home. She said to her parents: - Dear parents, my mind is not happy with family life, I want to leave home in the Buddha's liberating Dharma. Please allow me to leave home. "Hey kid, what are you saying?" This family is very rich. You are our only daughter. I am not allowed to leave home! She continued to ask, but not being allowed to leave home by her parents, she thought: "Well, let's accept it. When I return to my husband's house, my husband's consent, I will leave home!" She grew up, went to her husband's house, became a faithful wife, lived in a virtuous family and followed the good Dharma. When she lived in the family, she conceived, but did not know she was pregnant. A great festival was proclaimed in that city, and everyone in the city enjoyed the great festival. The city was decorated like the city of Zhutian. But while the great festival reached its climax, she still wore no makeup, no jewelry, dressed as usual. Her husband said to her: - Hey, my wife, the whole city has a great festival. And I don't take care of myself. "Sir, this body of mine is full of thirty-two parts of the body, what's the use of adorning this body?" This body is not born of gods, is not born of Brahma, is not made of gold, is not made of jewels, is not made of golden sandalwood, is not born from a white lotus, a pink lotus, or a blue lotus, no full of elixir. This body is defiled by parents, destroyed by impermanence, decay, destroy, make the cemetery grow, be attached to, be the cause of sorrow, the basis of mourning, the treasure of all diseases, the toleration of karma, internal uncleanliness, Externally usually excreted. Indeed, as the whole world can see its end is to die, to go to the graveyard, where the insects congregate. And she exclaims: Bound by tendons and bones, Sticking to flesh, Body covered by skin, Unseen. - Dear sage, what do you do to decorate this body? Is this body makeup the same as the exterior makeup of a pot full of feces? The millionaire heard her say that and asked: - If the bride sees this body as such a sin, why doesn't she leave home? – Dear sage, if I am allowed to leave home, I will be ordained today! Finished speaking, After organizing a great alms round and showing great respect for the Church, the millionaire and a large number of retinues took her to the monastic life, and she was ordained with a group of Devoted bhikkhunis. reach-da. After leaving home, she lived happily with a perfect mind. When her pregnancy was mature, the Male-stilts-ni noticed that her senses were different, her arms, legs and back were enlarged, the skin of her abdomen was enlarged, and asked her: - Dear sister, it seems that you have pregnant. How was this incident? - Gentlemen, I do not know this matter. Virtue I am full! Then the bhikkhunis took her to Devadatta and asked him: - Venerable sir, this good woman, with the acceptance of her husband's difficulty, has been released. family. Now that she is pregnant, we do not know if she conceived when she was a layperson, or when she was ordained. Now what must we do? Devadatta himself was not an Enlightened One, so he did not have patience, compassion, loving-kindness and thought: "A bhikkhuni of the Devadatta sect has now passed away. pregnant, and Devadatta rejoicing. I will be criticized like that. We must fire this man.” Then without investigating, like pushing a rock, Devadatta immediately affirmed and said: - Go now and get rid of this man! When the bhikkhunis heard this, they got up and paid homage and went back to their residence. The young woman said to those bhikkhunis: - Ladies and gentlemen, the Elder Devadatta is not the Buddha! I ordained not with Devadatta, but with the Perfectly Enlightened One, the supreme one in the world. Don't lose from me what you have won the hard way! Take me to Jetavana, meet the Teacher! That group of bhikkhunis took her away, having just crossed a forty-five-mile road, From Vuong Xa gradually came to Ky Vien, paid homage to the Master and reported the incident. The Master thought: "Even though her fetus was pictured when she was still a householder, this is also an occasion for the pagans to say that the recluse Gotama had received a bhikkhuni who had been possessed by Devadatta. -Multi removal. To put an end to the story, this matter was also settled in front of the king and his entourage.” The next day, the World-Honored One invited King Pasenadi, Kosala Kingdom, Great Solitude, Little Solitude, laywoman Visàkhà, and other famous figures. Then in the evening, when the four assemblies had all gathered, the Blessed One told the elder Upali. - Go and clarify the matter of this young female-stilts-ni among the four groups! - Yes, sir. The elder went to the middle of the assembly, sat on the seat prepared for him, called the laywoman Visàkhà in front of the king, and assigned this investigation: - Go, Visàkhà, First of all, determine the date of ordination, the month of ordination of this young woman. Once you know that, find out if she conceived before or after that time. The lay woman accepted the teaching and hung a curtain. After that curtain, the female lay woman observed the arms, legs, navel, abdomen, other body parts of the young female-stilts. After calculating the date, learning that she was pregnant during her time as a householder, the laywoman went to the Elder and reported the results. The elder, among the four assemblies, declared that bhikkhuni to be pure. Then she was confirmed to be pure, immediately went to pay homage to the Order of Bhikkhu-stilts and the Teacher, and then went to stay with the Bhikkhu-stilts. When the fetus was tamed, she gave birth to a son of great power, because she prayed at the feet of Buddha Padumuttara many aeons ago. The king, one day going near the residence of the bhikkhuni, heard the child's voice, and ask the gods. The court gods knew the story, told the king: - Dear Great King, the young Male-stilts-ni gave birth to a son. This is the cry of a child. - Monks, raising children is an obstacle for bhikkhunis. We will nurture it. The king gave the child to his relatives and raised him like a prince. On the day of naming, he was named Kassapa, but was nicknamed Prince Kassapa, because he was raised as a prince. When he was seven years old, Kassapa left home with the Teacher, and when he was full of age, received the Great Precepts. As time went by, he became an excellent preacher among preachers. Then the Master seals for him: - The Male-stilts, this is the first of my disciples teaching the Dharma, ie Prince Kassapa. Prince Kassapa, thanks to the Vammika Sutra (Central Central Business, No. 23) attested to Arahantship. Female-stilts-ni, his mother, through the development of Vipassana, the highest result. Elder Cumarakassapa, in the midst of the Buddha's teachings, was as bright as the full moon in the middle of nowhere. One day, after a meal, on the way back from begging for food, the Tathāgata finished teaching the monks and entered the Huong Room. After being instructed, the Sangha lived in their daytime rooms, or their night rooms. In the afternoon, they gathered in the Dharma hall, and praised the virtue of the Buddha: - O friends, Devadatta is not a Buddha in himself, nor does he have patience, compassion, compassion, caused Elder Cumarakassapa and Elder nun to be harmed. But the Perfectly Enlightened One, himself a Dharma King, achieved patience, compassion, and loving-kindness, becoming a refuge for them. The Master, with the majesty of the Buddha, entered the Dharma hall, sat down on the prepared seat, and asked: - The Male-stilts, what are you sitting to discuss? The Bhikkhu-stilts said: - World-Honored One, we discuss the merits of the Blessed One. "Monks, it is not only now that the Tathagata has become a refuge for these two, but also in the past. The bhikkhus asked the Blessed One to clarify this matter. The Blessed One clearly presented the story of the past. * Once upon a time, when King Brahamadatta reigned in Ba-la-complaint, the Bodhisatta was born as a deer. When born from its mother's womb, the deer is golden, its eyes are like jewels, its horns are silver-white, its mouth is as red as a velvet curtain, its toenails are smooth like lacquer, and its tail is like that of a buffalo. forest (Yak), the body is as big as a calf. It lives in the forest, surrounded by five hundred deer and is called the queen deer Nigrodla (Banyan Tree). Not far away, there is another deer, with five hundred elk entourage and called the deer Sakha (Branch), this deer is also yellow in color. At that time, King Benares often hunted deer. If he did not have venison, he would not eat rice. Every day the king summoned the townspeople to wake up, suspend everyone's work, and the king liked to go hunting. People thought: “This king suspends our work; Let us set traps for the bait and put water for the deer in the garden, drive many deer in there, close the door, and bring them to the king." Thus they sowed grass as a bait trap, laid out drinking water throughout the garden, set up the gates, took the men of the city with them, holding sticks, sticks, and other weapons into the forest in search of deer, and encircled them. about a mile or so to catch the deer surrounded in the middle, and so they surrounded the dwellings of the Nigrodha and Sakha deer. When they saw the herd of deer, they began to beat trees, dust, and earth with sticks. drive deer from their habitats, wield weapons such as swords, spears, bows, shouts, and drive deer into the forest. Then they closed the door, went to the king and said: - Dear Great King, because he always hunts deer, the Great King destroys our work. Now we have led the herd of wild deer into the garden of the Great King. From now on, the Great King can eat them. After saying this, the people left. The king heard them, went to the garden, looked at the deer, saw two golden deer, and spared them. From then on, the king sometimes shot a deer and brought it back. Sometimes the cook comes, shoots the deer and brings it back. The deer, seeing the bow, immediately trembled for fear of death, so they ran away. But when they get two or three wounds, they get tired, get sick, and are killed. The herd of deer reported such an incident to the Bodhisatta. The bodhisattva called Sakha and said: - Hey friend, many deer were harmed, they had to die anyway. But from now on, don't let the deer be shot in vain. Let the deer take turns to die. One day is my deer session, one day is your deer session. The deer that is in his turn just go, lie down and put his head in the place to die. That way, the other deer won't get hurt. Sakha the deer approved. From then on, in its turn, a deer came, lay down, and laid its neck on the place where it was killed. The cook came, caught the deer lying there and took it away. One day it was the turn of a pregnant female deer in the Sakha herd. The female deer came to Sakha and said: - Lord, I am pregnant, about to give birth, so the herd has two lives in its turn. Please pass my session. Nai Sakha said: - Can't ask other deer to take your place. Bear with what will come to you, go. The doe was not approved by Sakha, so she went to the Bodhisatta and explained the matter. When the Bodhisatta heard it, he said: - Okay, let's go! I'll skip your turn! Then the king deer himself came, laid his head in the place of death, and waited. When the cook saw this, he said: - The king deer has been spared from death, and now lies in this place of death. Why is this incident? Then he went and reported to the king. The king immediately got into the carriage, went to a large entourage, saw the Bodhisattva, and said: - Hey, friend, I have spared you from death. Why are you lying here? - Great King, a female deer came to me, asking another one to take her place. I can't make another one suffer the pain of being killed. I decided to give the doe my life, take the death for the doe, so lie here, Great King, no doubt! The King said: - O golden elk, before, I have never seen among humans, anyone with complete patience, peace, and compassion like you. Therefore, I am very pleased with you. Arise, I will free you and that doe from fear! - Master, two deer are free from fear, what about the rest of the deer? "Hey, elk, I will free the rest of the deer from fear. - Great King, the deer are free from fear, but what about the other four-legged creatures? - O elk, I also free them from fear! - Great King, the four-legged animals are free from fear, but what about the birds? – O elk, I will also free them from fear! - Great King, such birds are freed from fear, but what about the fish that live in the water? - Hey lord deer, I will also free them from fear! Thus, the king deer asked the king to be free from fear for all beings, stood up, advised the king to take the five precepts, and said: - Great King, live according to the Dharma! Behave in accordance with the Dharma towards parents, sons and daughters, brahmins, householders, people in the city, and people in the provinces. Live by yourself in accordance with the Dharma, when humanity dies, you will be reborn in good animals, in the heavenly world, in this world! After preaching the Dharma to the king with the miraculous power of the Buddha, the Bodhisatta lived in the garden for a few days to encourage the king, then, surrounded by deer, went up the mountain to follow them into the forest. The female deer gave birth to a male deer as beautiful as a flower bud. This elk goes out with the Sakha herd of deer. Seeing her deer go out with Sakha deer, the mother deer advised her son, from now on, don't go to Sakha, should go to Nigrodha and say the verse: Live with Ni-gro-dha, Don't live with Sa-kha! To die with Ni-gro-dha, Than to live with Sa-kha. From then on, the deer escaped fear when eating the rice of the people. And the people remembered that the deer were freed from fear, so they did not dare to beat them or drive them away. They gathered in the king's courtyard and reported to the king. The king said: - Due to my consent, I have given Nigrodha a favor. I would rather lose my country than give up my promise. Go, in my kingdom no deer is beaten! Nigrodha deer, hearing this news, immediately gathered the herd of deer and said: - From now on, don't eat other people's rice! After telling them to promise so, the deer Nigrodha informed the people: - From now on, rice growers should not fence their fields to protect the rice, only make a sign by tying the rice leaves. From there, according to rumors, the custom of tying rice leaves among the fields arose. From then on, the deer did not cross the field with the rice leaves tied up. This is because the Bodhisattva exhorts them in this way. After teaching the herd of deer, the Bodhisatta lived there until the end of his life, and then accompanied the herd of deer to follow his karma. The king, on the other hand, listened to the bodhisattva's advice, made merit throughout his life, and then followed his own karma. * The Master said after narrating the Dharma talk: - The Male-stilts, not only now I protect the Elder nuns and Kumarkassapa, but in the past I also protected like that. Then he preached the Four Truths, made the connection between the two stories, combined them together, and concluded by identifying the Predecessor: – At that time, Sakha's deer was Devadatta, the herd. The deer is Devadatta's attendant, the female deer is the elder nun, the young deer is Kumarakassapa, the king is Ananda, That's what I am, the lord of Nigrodha. -ooOoo- 13. ARROW STORY (Kandina's predecessor) Cursed arrow..., This story, while in Ky Vien, the Blessed One recounted the temptation of previous wives to the Male-stilts. This story will be told in Indriya Forerunner No. 248, Chapter Eight. The Blessed One said to the bhikkhu, “By this woman, formerly, your life was destroyed and burned alive in a blazing fire. The bhikkhus asked the Blessed One to explain the story, and the Blessed One explained the story that was covered up by rebirth. [From now on, we will not talk about the monks' request for an explanation, the clear presentation of the story that is obscured by rebirth, but we will only say: Tell the story of the past. All the rest are understood as in the previous stories.] * Once upon a time, in the country of Makita, the king of that country was reigning in the city of Vuong Xa. In the rice season, The deer residing in Makita were in danger, so they entered the mountain road in the forest. There, a wild deer fell in love with a female deer living in a border village. When the deer came back from the mountain road while going down to the border of the village, out of attachment to that doe, the mountain deer followed her. The female deer said: – He is a stupid mountain deer. At the border of the village, there is danger and there is fear. Don't come down with us. Because the mountain deer has attachment, refuses to turn back, still goes with the female deer. The people of Machida know the time when the deer came down from the mountain road, and hid in secret places by the roadside. On their way back, a hunter hid in a hidden place. The female deer can smell people, knows that there is a hunter hiding, so she tells the stupid deer to go first, while I go behind. The hunter with a single shot, shot down the deer on the spot. The female deer knew that the wild deer had been hit, and immediately jumped up and ran like the wind. The hunter came out of hiding, skinned the mountain elk, lit a fire, and grilled the juicy venison over the flameless coals. After eating the meat, drinking the water, with the pole he brought back the leftover flesh with dripping blood to please the children, and went home. At that time, the Bodhisatta was born as a deity in that forest. Seeing what had happened, he thought as follows: “This foolish deer did not die because of his mother, not because of his father, only because of lust. Sentient beings enjoy the pleasures of sex when they have new images, but then they will experience suffering, have their hands cut off, suffer from the five kinds of suffering, be tied up, and be beaten. Making others suffer and die is something to be criticized in this life! Any country that has women to complete and issue orders, that country is led by women is to be criticized! Those sentient beings who are subject to the domination of women deserve to be criticized.” While the other gods spoke of praise and offered incense, flowers, etc., the Bodhisatta gathered three criticisms in one verse, causing the whole forest to resound with sweet sounds. His Holiness preached with this verse: Cursed arrow Shooting people cause suffering, Cursed the kingdom Led by a goddess! Cursed beings who submit to women! Thus, with one verse, all three criticisms were captured by the Bodhisatta, and the whole forest resounded with his teaching as he preached the Buddha's power. * The Master, finished this Dharma talk, then preached about the Four Truths. At the end of the lecture, the Male-stilts were attached to the fruit of Stream-entry. The Master told two stories, combined them together, and concluded with the identification of the Predecessor: - At that time, the wild deer was an attached Male-stilts, The female deer is the previous wife of the Male-stilts, and the deity who preaches the Dharma clearly states the sin of sex and greed as I. -ooOoo- 14. THE STORY OF THE WIND (Vattamiga) This story, while staying at Ky Vien, the Master told about the Elder Cullapindapatika Tissa. According to tradition, when the Master was staying at Truc Lam, near Vuong Xa, the son of a rich millionaire family, named Tissakumara, one day went to Truc Lam to listen to the teacher preach the Dharma. Tissa went home, asked permission to leave home, but her parents were not satisfied. Tissakumara then fasted for seven days like Ratthapala (Central Central Business No. 83) and was approved by his parents to leave home with the Teacher. About half a month, after ordination to Tissakumara, the Master, from Truc Lam went to Ky Vien. There, this good man followed the three leading men of the momentum, spending his time begging from house to house in Savatthi. With the name of Elder Cullapindapatika, he becomes as luminous in the Teacher's Dhamma as the moon in the sky. Meanwhile, at Vuong Xa, on the occasion of a great festival being held, the Elder's parents took the jewelry, which the son used to wear while at home, put it in a silver box and placed it on his chest. cried while saying the following: – In other happy festivals, our children often wear these jewelry. The recluse Gotama took our only son and went to Savatthi. Where do our children sit now? where do you stand? A beautiful prostitute went to that family, saw the millionaire's wife crying, and asked her why she was crying. She told the story. The prostitute said: - Madam, what does your son like? – He loves this, this! – If you give me complete sovereignty in this family, I will bring your son back. The millionaire's wife accepted the offer, gave her expenses, send off the prostitute with a large entourage: – Go and use your strength to bring back my son. That prostitute sat in a car with a curtain and went to Savatthi, where she temporarily stayed on the road where the Elder used to go for alms. She was surrounded with her entourage, and did not show the Elder her entourage from the same millionaire family. When the Elder began to enter this road for alms, she offered food with a spoon and a bowl, bound the Elder with greed, and in turn invited the Elder to sit in the house and offer food. When she learned that the Elder had been conquered by her, she feigned pain and lay down in the inner room. The elder, while going for alms from house to house, came to her door. The servant took his bowl and bowl and invited him to sit in the house. After sitting, the Elder asked: - Where is the female laywoman? - Venerable, the lay woman is sick, and wishes to see the Venerable. Bound by greed for good taste, undermining the precepts he had accepted, the Elder entered her bedroom. Then she recounted the reason she came here to tempt him, bind him with greed, make him renounce ordination, place him in her influence, and put him in the car. with a large entourage, went to Vuong Xa. This incident went viral. The Male-stilts sitting in the Dharma hall said this: - Hey, sages, a beautiful prostitute bound the Elder Cullapindaptika Tissa with greed for good taste and took the Elder away! The Master went to the Dharma hall, sat down on the prepared throne, and asked what was being discussed by the bhikkhus. Those bhikkhus narrated the story. The Master said: - Monks, it is not only now that this bhikkhu, bound by greed, has fallen under her influence, who had fallen into her power in the past. Then the Blessed One told the story of the past. * Once upon a time, when King Brahmadattha reigned in Ba-la-complaint, there was a gardener named Sanjaya. A wind deer came to that garden, saw Sanjaya and ran away. Sanjaya doesn't frighten it, let it go. The deer kept coming and going back and forth in the garden. The gardener often picked the fruits in the garden, and daily offered to the king. One day, the king asked: - Hey, did you see anything strange in the garden? - Dear Great King, I don't see anything else, I just see a wind deer coming, going back and forth in the garden. - Can Khanh catch it? - If you get a little honey, you can lead it right into the inner palace. The king told him to give him honey. The gardener, taking honey, went to the garden where the wind deer used to go, he smeared grass with honey and hid. The deer goes to eat grass with honey, bound by greed, does not go elsewhere, only to the garden. The gardener knew that the deer was addicted to the honey-soaked grass, and he gradually appeared. When he saw the gardener on the day of the battle, the deer ran away, but then he saw it, believed in it, and gradually came to eat grass and put it in the hands of the gardener. The gardener knew that he had won the trust of the beast, so he spread the young branches and leaves as thick as a carpet to the inner palace, put a jar of honey under his arm, tied a handful of grass and belt, and spread the grass honey in front of the deer, and brought it to the inner palace. When the deer had reached the inner palace, they closed the door. The deer saw people, panicked, scared to death, kept running back and forth in the inner palace. The king came down from the castle, saw the deer panic, and said: - This wind deer, a whole week did not go to the place where he saw you, In his whole life, he did not go to the place he was afraid of, the animal that lived in the jungle was bound by greed, and now he has come to a situation like this! Indeed, there is nothing more evil than greed in life. Then with the verse, the king preached the Dharma: There is nothing more evil than legends say, At home or with friends, San-jiada with the Conqueror of the wind deer Relying only on the mountains and forests. After saying this, the king released the deer into the forest. * The Teacher said: - Monks, this beautiful prostitute not only now binds him with greed and conquers him, but in the past he has also done the same. . After giving this discourse, the Blessed One combined the two stories together, and concluded with the identification of the Forefathers as follows: - At that time, Sanjaya was a beautiful prostitute, the wind deer was Cullapindapatika, and the king was Ba-la-complaint is Ta so. -ooOoo- 15. THE STORY OF THE Kharadiya Deer (Kharadiya's predecessor) When the deer had eight hoofs..., This story, While at Ky Vien, the Teacher told about a difficult-to-be-revealed Male-stilts. According to legend, the difficult-to-do bhikkhu did not accept the teaching. Therefore, the Master asked: - Male-stilts, is it really difficult for you to say, not to accept the word of encouragement? "Indeed, White World-Honored One! The Blessed One said, "Once upon a time, because it was difficult to tell him not to accept the advice of the Wise, he was caught in a trap, and his life perished! Having said this, the Blessed One told the story of the past. * Once upon a time, when King Brahamadattta reigned in Ba-la-complaint, the Bodhisatta was born as a deer, surrounded by deer and lived in the forest. A deer she brought to a fawn and said: – Hey, this is your grandchild. Teach him the wisdom of deer. The Bodhisatta said to his son: - At that time, come to study. But the granddaughter didn't come at the appointed time. Such a day, seven days too, ignoring the seven precepts, he did not come to learn the wisdom of the deer, and at last, as he wandered about, he was caught in a trap. His mother asked the Bodhisattva: - Hey, have you taught you the wisdom of deer? The Bodhisatta said: - Don't think about the deer that won't accept that teaching. Her children did not learn the wisdom of deer. Now I don't want to teach it anymore. The Bodhisatta read this stanza: When the deer has eight hoofs With its horns forking many branches, There are seven tricks to save itself, I will not teach it anymore, O Kharadiya. Then the hunter killed the deer caught in the trap, and brought the meat back. * The Master said: - This Male-stilts, not only now he is difficult to tell, in the past he was also difficult to tell. This dharma talk is over, The Master combined the two stories and concluded with the Presence: - At that time, my son's son was a difficult-to-be-revealed monk, her sister's deer was Uppalavanna (Lotus of color), and the teaching deer was Ta. So. -ooOoo- 16. STORY OF THE DELAY HAS THREE LETS. (Predecessor Tipallatthamiga) Deer with three gestures…, This story, while staying at the Badarika monastery in Kosambi, the Master told about the Elder Rahula (Rahula) eager to learn the precepts. Once, when the Master was staying at the Aggàlava palace, near the city of Àlavi, many female laywomen and bhikkhunis used to come to the monastery to listen to the Dharma. Lectures are held during the day. But after a while, the lay people and the bhikkhunis stopped going, only the bhikkhus and the male lay followers. From there, the sermon was held at night. After the sermon, the elder monks went to their accommodation, while the young monks lay in the lecture room with the men. When they sleep, Some lay snoring and grinding their teeth. Some lay down only for a moment, then got up, saw the inappropriate event, and reported it to the Blessed One. The World-Honored One devised the following precepts: - Any bhikkhu who sleeps with someone who has not received the Great Precept is guilty of Pàcittiya (Baddhi: the sin must be confessed in front of the Sangha) Then he went to Kosambi. At that time, the Male-stilts said to Venerable Rahula: - sage Rahula, the Blessed One has set the precepts. The sage now finds his abode. In the past, out of respect for the Blessed One, because he was earnestly studying the precepts, those bhikkhus welcomed Rahula as if into their own home, prepared a small bed and gave him a small bed. the pillow cover. But that day, the Male-stilts, for fear of violating the precepts, did not give Rahula a place to stay. The sage Rahula did not go to the Blessed One as his father, Nor did he go to Sariputra, who was the Chief of the Dharma and his teacher, nor did he go to Mahamudra, who was his chief teacher, but went to the bathroom of the Blessed One. , as if entering the Brahma palace and staying there. In the Buddha's bathroom, the door is always well closed, the floor is made of fragrant earth. Flowers and wreaths lined the walls. All night long the lamp is on. The sage Rahula did not stay there because of this luxurious scene, just because the bhikkhus told him to find a place to live, just out of respect for advice, because he wanted to study, so he stayed there. Occasionally, the Male-stilts see the Venerable coming from afar, for the purpose of testing, often throw outside the broom handle or some garbage, wait for the Rahula to come, then ask: - sage, Who threw this garbage? When he heard: Rahula himself passed this way, he did not say: - Venerable Sir, I don't know this. On the contrary, Rahula used to clean up the garbage, humbly apologize, and then leave after being forgiven. Because of the desire to study like that, the new Rahula stayed there. Then, before dawn, the Master stood in front of the bathroom door and cleared his throat. The venerable cleared his throat. - Who's that? - I am Lahula. Then the venerable went out to pay homage. - Hey, Rahula, why are you lying here? - Because there is no place to live, World Honored One, before the bhikkhus let me stay together, now, for fear of committing a crime, they do not give me a place to live. Thinking, this is a place where no one touches anyone, so I lie here! The World-Honored One was deeply moved by the Dharma, thinking: "With Rahula, the Male-stilts still throw away like this, for the young people who have just left home, there is nothing they can't do." Early in the morning, the Blessed One called a meeting of the bhikkhus and asked the Chief Justice: - O Sariputra, Do you know where Rahula now resides? - Venerable Sir, I do not know. - O Sariputra, Rahula is in the toilet! O Sariputra, if you abandon Rāhula like this, what can't you do with young monastics? If that were the case, those who left home in this Dharma would not stay. Starting today, you are allowed to live with people who have not received the Great Precepts for a day or two. On the third day, let them out, after knowing their whereabouts. After adding this sub-clause, the Blessed One established the precepts. At that time, the Male-stilts sitting in the Dharma hall praised the virtues of Rahula: - Dear friends, look at how earnestly Rahula studies. When asked about his whereabouts, Rahula did not say: I am the son of the Blessed One. Rahula did not oppose a single bhikkhu, but went to the restroom! When the Male-stilts were saying this, the Teacher came to the Dharma hall, sat down in a decorated seat, and asked: - What are you, monks, sitting here talking about? "World-Honored One, we talk about Rahula's eagerness to learn, and we don't talk about anything else. The Master said: - Not only now did Rahula earnestly study, but before, when he was born, he was also eager to learn. And the Blessed One told the story of the past. * Once upon a time, a king Ma-kita-da was reigning at Vuong Xa. At that time the Bodhisatta was born as a deer, surrounded by a herd of deer and lived in the forest. The older sister's deer brought her son and said: - Hey, teach your nephew the wisdom of deer. - Very good. The bodhisattva replied and said: - Hey, dear, go, and at that time, come and study. The elk has not forgotten the hour you spoke, it came at the right time and learned the wisdom of the deer. One day, As he walked through the forest, he was caught in a trap and uttered the cry of a captured beast. The deer ran away and told the mother deer that she was trapped. It went to the deer and asked: – Hey, have you learned the wisdom of deer? The Bodhisatta said: - Don't be afraid of bad omens that come to you. It has learned the wisdom of deer. Now it's your turn to laugh! Having said that, the Bodhisatta read this verse: Deer with three gestures, With much wisdom, Knowing how to use eight claws, Knowing how to drink water at midnight; With only one ear, Breathe to the rhythm of the earth; With six wisdoms, My grandson overcomes his enemies. Thus, the Bodhisatta pointed out that his nephew had learned well the wisdom of deer, and comforted his sister. And the young deer caught in the trap, did not struggle, lay comfortably stretched out on one side, paws scraping the ground near the feet, scooping up dust and grass, urinating and defecating, Its head hangs down, sticks out its tongue, drens its body with sweat, then it holds its breath, causing its stomach to swell, its eyes widening, breathing with only one nostril below, holding its breath with its upper nostril, making its whole body stiff like a baby dead object. That's why green flies come and surround it. Here and there, crows have landed. The hunter came over, patted its belly with his hand, thinking: "This one was caught in the morning, now it has started to rot", he untied the deer, and said: - Now I slaughter it here and will bring back the meat. Without a doubt, the hunter began to gather branches and leaves. The young deer immediately got up, stood on all fours, struggled with its body, stretched its neck, and like a cloud dispersed by a strong wind, it ran very quickly to its mother. * The Master said: - La-hula is not now eager to learn, in the past he was also eager to learn like that. This dharma talk is over, after combining the two stories, He concluded with the identification of the Forerunner as follows: - At that time, the grandson's son was La-Hula, the mother's deer was Upplavanna and his son was Ta. -ooOoo- 17. THE BLOOD STORY (Maluta) If it's dark or light..., This story, when in Ky Vien, the Master told about two elderly Male-stilts. Legend has it that, in the kingdom of Kosala, they lived in a forest, an elder named Dark, and an elder named Sang. One day, Evening asked Morning: - Venerable, when is it called cold? Morning said: – In the dark moon. One day, Morning asked Evening: - Venerable, when is it called cold? Evening said: – In the morning of the moon. Both could not solve their own confusion, so they went to the Master, bowed down to him and asked: - World-Honored One, when is it called cold? The Master, listening to their story, immediately said: - O Male-stilts, in the past, I have answered this question for you. Because many lives are contained, your judgment is not clear anymore. Having said this, the Master told the story of the past. * Once at the foot of the mountain, a lion and a tiger were friends, living in the same cave. At that time, the Bodhisatta had gone forth as a hermit, also at the foot of that mountain. One day, an argument arose between the two animals over the issue of cold. The tiger said it was cold during the dark moon. The lion again said it was cold during the bright moon. They could not resolve their confusion on their own, so they went to ask the Bodhisatta. He said the verse: If it is evening or morning When the wind blows, There is wind blowing, it is cold Both, no one loses. Thus, the Bodhisattva reconciled the two friends. * The Master said: - The Male-stilts, in the past, I have answered you this question. After giving this talk, His Holiness preached the Four Truths. At the end of that lecture, two Elders attesting to the fruit of the Stream. After combining the two stories, the Master concluded with the identification of the Forerunner: - At that time, the tiger was Light, the lion was Dark, and I was an ascetic who answered the question. -ooOoo- 18. STORY OF FOOD FOR THE DEATH (Predecessor Matakabhatta) If sentient beings know…, This story, while staying at Ky Vien, the Master told about food offered to the dead. During that time, many people killed many goats and sheep... to offer food for their dead relatives. The Male-stilts, seeing them doing this, asked the Master: - Blessed One, now many people kill the lives of many sentient beings to offer food for the dead. any benefit? The Blessed One said: - Offering such food to the dead has no benefit. When you have killed living beings, how can there be any benefit? Once upon a time, the sages sat in the middle of nowhere, preaching the Dharma, clearly stated the dangers of this custom, causing the entire population in Jambudvipa to abandon that action. But now, being accumulated by birth and existence, that action arises again. Having said this, the Blessed One told the story of the past. * Once upon a time, when King Brahmadatta was reigning in Ba-la-complaint, a Brahmin who understood the three Vedas, a famous teacher from the four directions, wanted to offer food to the dead, to arrest the dead. a goat and told the disciples. "My dear children, take this goat to the river, bathe it, put a wreath around its neck, feed it half an inch of rice, groom it, and bring it here. The disciples obeyed, led the goat to the river, bathed it, groomed it, and then let it stand on the riverbank. That goat saw what he had done in his previous life, thinking: "Today, I will be free from suffering", so it feels happy, laughs loudly like breaking a jave, and thinks: " This brahmin, when he kills me, will suffer my sufferings in the past,” he began to feel pity for the Brahmin, and wept loudly. The young men asked him: – Hey, you laugh out loud and cry out loud. Why do you laugh, why do you cry? – Ask this question in front of your teachers! They took the goat away, and reported it to the master. The teacher heard the story and asked the goat: - Hey goat, why are you laughing and why are you crying? The goat, through its knowledge of the past, remembered what it had done, and said to the brahmin: - O Brahmin, in the past, like you, I was a brahmin. skilled in spells, wanting to give food to the dead, killed a goat to make an offering. For killing only one goat, I was beheaded in four hundred and ninety-nine times. This is my last five hundred life and death. Today, I will be free from that suffering. Thinking like that, I feel happy, Because of this fate we laugh. And I wept, because I thought that just for killing a goat I would have to suffer beheading five hundred times. Today we will get rid of that suffering. But this brahmin, for killing me, will be like me to suffer beheading for five hundred lives. Out of pity for him, I wept. - Hey goat, don't be afraid, I won't kill you! - What do you say, brahmin? Whether you kill me or not, I cannot escape death today! – Goat, do not be afraid, I will protect you, I will go with you! - How small, brahmin, is your protection, and mighty is my evil deeds! The brahmin released the goat and said to his disciples: And with the disciples, the brahmin followed the animal. The goat that had just been released, stretched its neck, came to the grass that grew behind the rock, and began to eat the leaves. Just then, lightning struck the back of that rock, a piece of rock was broken, fell on the neck of the outstretched goat and cut off its head. Many people gathered to watch. At that time, the Bodhisatta was born as a tree deity there. With the power of the deity, the Bodhisattva sat cross-legged in space, over the standing assembly watching, and thought: "These sentient beings, if they knew the results of such evil deeds, would not do evil deeds. again!" Then, with a sweet voice, he preached through a verse: If sentient beings know that this causes suffering, Sentient beings will no longer kill sentient beings. Thus, the Great Being preached the Dharma, causing everyone to fear hell. And many people who heard that sermon, knowing that they were afraid of hell, abstained from killing. After the bodhisattva finished his sermon, he settled in the Five Precepts and then followed his own karma. As for the masses, abide in the bodhisattva's advice, after performing meritorious deeds such as almsgiving etc. v… was born in the heavenly world, filling the city of gods. * The Teacher finished this Dharma talk, combined the two stories together, and identified the Forerunner as follows: – At that time, I was the tree god. -ooOoo- 19. STORY OF OFFERING FOR BENEFITS (Ayàcitabhatta) If you want to escape the present…, This story, while in Ky Vien, the Master told about the offerings made by praying to the gods. At that time, according to legend, the masses, while doing business, often killed sentient beings, to make offerings to the gods with the prayer: "If we return safely, we can earn profit, We will make offerings for you!”. Praying like this, they left. When they return safely and earn profit, they think that it is thanks to the power of the gods, so they kill many sentient beings and make offerings to release their prayers. Seeing that, The bhikkhus asked the Blessed One if there was any benefit in this, and the Blessed One told the story of the past. -ooOoo- Once upon a time, in the country of Kàsi, a householder in a small village promised to make food offerings to the god of an eagle tree that grew near the village gate. When he returned safely, he killed many sentient beings, and went to the tree to ask for the release of his promise. But the tree deity standing between two branches said this verse: If you want to escape from the present, Think of escaping from the next life, Escape from the present like this, A tight bondage, A wise one cannot escape, So escape, bind others stupid. From then on, the people gave up killing, lived according to the Dharma, and after their death were reborn in the heavenly realm, filling the city of gods. * The Teacher finished this Dharma talk, combined the two stories, and identified the Predecessor: – At that time, I was the God of the tree. -ooOoo- 20. THE STORY OF LOOK NALAKAPANA (Nalakapana forerunner) Seeing footprints going down..., While traveling in Kosala, going to the village of Nalakàpana, living in the Ketaka forest, near Lake Nalakapana, the Master told this story about a reed. At that time the bhikkhus, after bathing in the lake of Nalakapana, told the novices to go and get the reeds to make needle tubes, they saw that the reeds were completely empty, and immediately asked the Blessed One: - The Blessed One: Ton, we give you the reeds to make needle tubes. But from root to tip, the reeds are completely empty. Why is that so? The Master said: - O Male-stilts, this is because of my old vow. Having said this, the Master told the story of the past. * Once upon a time, according to legend, there was a lake in the jungle. In that lake, there was a demon Lasa who eats anyone who enters the water. At that time, the Bodhisatta was born as a monkey king, as large as a red deer, Surrounded by about eighty thousand monkeys, the Bodhisatta protected the monkeys that lived in the forest. The bodhisattva often advises the monkeys: - Dear children, in this forest there are poisonous trees and dead lakes, where non-human species live. When you eat fruit that you have not eaten before and drink water that you have not drunk before, ask me first. The monkeys obeyed. One day, going to a place they had never been before, after many days, they looked for water to drink, and found a lake. But they did not drink water, just sat waiting for the Bodhisattva. He came and said: - Dear children, why don't you drink water? - We are waiting for your arrival. - Very well, dear children! The Bodhisatta, walking around the lake, saw footprints going down, but not going up, and thought: "There is no doubt that this lake is inhabited by non-human beings." The bodhisattva said to the monkeys: - Dear children, you have done well because you did not drink water. This lake is inhabited by non-humans. The underwater demon Lasa knew that they didn't drink water, immediately appeared in a horrible shape with a green belly, yellow white face, red limbs, turned the water up and said: - Why are you sitting here, come down and drink water! The bodhisattva asked, "Are you a La-sat who was born in the country?" - Right. – Do you force people to drink water here? - Right. I catch from the little bird up into the water, here, I don't spare anyone! I will eat you all. We won't let you eat us. But drink water. - Okay, we'll drink water. But we will not fall under your power. - How do you drink water? "What, you think we'll go down and have a drink?" Without going into the water, eighty thousand of us take a reed every day, like drinking water through a green lotus, we will drink the water of your lake. So, you won't be able to eat us! Knowing this meaning, the Master read the verse: Seeing footprints going down, Not seeing footprints up, Drinking water with a reed, You cannot kill me! Having said this, the Bodhisatta brought a reed, recalling the perfections, uttered mantras, and blew the reed with his mouth. The reed became completely empty, not a single eyeball remained inside. In this way, the Bodhisatta brought another mop, then another mop, and blew. But if he did so, the bodhisattva could not get rid of it all. Therefore, the Bodhisattva does not do that anymore. Then the Bodhisatta went around the lake and ordered: - All reeds are empty! Due to the great benefit of the bodhisattvas, that commandment was fulfilled. From then on, all the reeds around the lake became empty. In this life, there are four supernormal powers that last for a lifetime. how is four? first. The rabbit sign in the moon, will last throughout this life (Predecessor No. 316). 2. The place where the fire is extinguished, as mentioned in Vattaka's Predecessor (No. 35), that place will not be touched by fire during this lifetime. 3. There is the house of the potter Ghatikara where it never rained during this lifetime (Middle Way No. 81). 4. The reeds that grow around this lake will be completely empty during this lifetime. These are the four supernormal powers that will last throughout this life. The Bodhisatta gave such an order, and took a reed, and sat down. Those eighty thousand monkeys, each holding a reed, sat down around the lake. And while the Bodhisatta sucked in water through the reed, they all sat on the bank drinking water. They drank the water like this, and the underwater demon rakshak couldn't catch anyone, so he was not happy, and went back to his place of residence. As for the bodhisattva, surrounded by his retinue, returned to live in the forest. * The Teacher said: - The Male-stilts, these reeds are completely empty because of my old vows. After he finished giving this talk, he combined the two stories, and concluded with the identification of the predecessors: - At that time, the demon of the water-rasatha was Devadatta, and eighty thousand monkeys were the assembly. of the Buddha, and the monkey king who is skillful in using means is I. End of Quality. - At that time the demon rakshak water was Devadatta, eighty thousand monkeys were the assembly of the Buddha, and the monkey king who skillfully used means was I.
