The story of Mr. Loneliness, the great believer in the Buddha's time.VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.
Part 3
[V] BUDDHA'S DISCIPLINES FOR Lonely monasticism
During the forty-five years of teaching the Dharma, the Buddha entered and descended nineteen times in the city of Sa Ve, at the Ky Vien pagoda, founded by Tu Tu Da Lonely, in the private land of Prince Ky Da (Jeta). Whenever the Buddha entered summer (ie, staying in one place diligently practicing meditation for three months during the rainy season) like that, Tu Da Level of Solitude visited the Buddha twice a day. His main purpose was just to see the Master's face, but if conditions were favorable, he could also hear the Dharma. Therefore, the Solitary Ascendant often hesitated when he was about to ask the Buddha a few questions related to Dharma study. Because he thought: "I am the great benefactor of the Church, I should not cause the impression in the Sangha to misunderstand my giving and offering, in exchange for the precious teachings of the Buddha!".
For the Solitary Ascendant, the offering originates from goodwill, from the pleasure of doing meritorious deeds, not doing merit to get compensation. And in that purity of meritorious joy must be a worthy recompense! He always tried to avoid causing the Sangha or the Buddha to feel that: "Every time the Solitary Buddha comes, the Buddha must preach the Dharma to him" - on the contrary, if the World-Honored One or a certain great recluse. speak the Dharma to him, it is because of their compassion and joy that they want to give the Dharma!
From that reason, when coming to serve the Buddha, Tu Da Level of Solitude, after paying homage to the Buddha, always sat quietly to one side, first to see if the Buddha had anything to teach him. After that, if the World-Honored One had nothing to say, he would take the opportunity to narrate to the Buddha, the ups and downs in his life, especially the anecdotes that followed what the Buddha had said. know.
Solitary ascetic did this not to brag about his life, but to ask the Buddha for an accurate analysis, in-depth review of each situation, and approval or criticism of his conduct. Sometimes it is also the first part of a sermon the Buddha will give. As a result, there were many virtuous actions in his life that formed the basis of the content of the teachings the Buddha gave.
As a result, many of the Buddha's teachings dedicated to Solitude have become "dhamma numbers" quite common in the doctrine of liberation, especially the teaching that guides the cultivation of virtue of lay people. All these teachings, when combined, can be considered as a set of laws applied in the field of improving the thought of lay Buddhists. Considering this aspect, then Loneliness is not only a great benefactor of the church when the Buddha was still alive, but he is also a person who has made great contributions to the Dharma study for later generations of lay people!
Those teachings are scattered throughout the entire Anguttara Nikaya ( Anguttara Nikaya - If you need a complete reference, please read "The discourse collection in numerical order" by Nyanaponika, by The Wheel publishes: part I numbers 153, 155. Part II numbers 208, 211 and part III numbers 238, 240.) range from the simplest of the gospels to the most profound teachings. In the following, we would like to quote only a few symbolic of the basic scriptures reserved for the lay world:
- Hey kids! The noble lay Buddhist, when imbued with the Dharma, is ready every day to protect the religious life and to take care of the four things planted. Because of that, they will have a good name, will have a residence in the next life in the heavenly realm! So what are those four things planted?".
- Hey kids! The four crops are food, clothing, shelter, and medicine. These four things, you should regularly make offerings to the monks who are full of virtue, because they are the field of merit for living beings!" (According to Anguttara Nikaya IV. 60: Tang Chi A Ham IV. 60).
Elsewhere, Buddha says:
- Hey kids! There are four kinds of happiness that lay people can attain: "happiness in which to own", "happiness with many possessions", "happiness not owed to others", and "happiness where no one is mocked". ".
Then Buddha explained:
1/ Hey kids! He is rich by his energy and diligence, by his hands, by sweat and tears, and by his courage. At the same time think: What we have is worthy, legal, is proud! People think like that, and satisfy it is "Happiness of the owner".
2/ Whoever is legally rich, and by his diligence, then enjoys it for himself, and knows how to share it with those who are miserable or create good conditions, sow it in the field of merit, and at the same time think that : I deserve this wealth. We also know how to use part of that wealth to make good fortune and create peace in the next life. I am a person who lives righteous business and right livelihood. I am always satisfied! Thinking like this is happiness with many possessions.
3/ A person owes no one, no matter how big or small. At the same time think: I am a worthy citizen in society. I am not a source of suspicion, a source of deception for anyone. Such a mindset is happiness without debt.
4/ The noble Buddhist is one who is never complained or criticized by anyone, whether that criticism is in mind, in action or in words! Then that Buddhist thought: I am very peaceful because I am not criticized or despised by anyone through the three lanes of body, speech and mind. This well-being makes our life always confident and pure. Such thinking is called Happiness is not ridiculed by the world (According to Anguttara Nikaya IV. 62: Increase Chi A Function IV. 62).
Above is the article "Dharma number four" (ie the dharmas have four limbs). As for "Dharma number five" (France has five limbs), please quote as follows:
Buddha said:
- Hey, lay Buddhists! There are five things that people always desire to have, love to be close to, and seek to create for themselves: long life, beauty, happiness, fame, and rebirth in heaven.
But hey, lay Buddhists! The Tathagata does not teach you to burn incense day and night to pray or make a wish for that year of happiness, because it is an act of superstition and useless action.
Noble lay Buddhists are those who know well what it is to be superstitious, distrustful and delight in the forms of sacrifices to gods, invocation of other powers. On the contrary, they are always confident, pure and live according to the Noble Eightfold Path. Then their lifespan will increase, increasing immeasurable.
Similarly, for the remaining four desires, the Buddhist living in right view also does not believe in God or that God can give him beauty, happiness, fame, or bring him to heaven. God. They just live daily according to the Noble Eightfold Path. Then their beauty will increase, their happiness will be long, their fame will spread, and at the end of their lives, they will be reborn in a higher realm (According to Anguttara Nikaya V. 43: Increase Chi A Ham). No. V. 43).
In another "Dharma of the Five Elements", the Buddha said:
- Hey, lay Buddhists! There are five opportunities for a rich person to maintain happiness:
1. Proper treatment of parents, wives, children and people who eat people in the house: A person with righteous faith is someone who knows how to use their wealth, legally created by their own merits, not only to bring happiness to themselves. but also bring happiness to the family including parents, wife and children and people living in them. Since then, people living under their common roof, will always seek to protect that wealth for the community to enjoy.
2. Treating friends and colleagues properly: A person who is rich and virtuous is someone who knows how to create opportunities for his friends and colleagues to progress and prosper like him. From there, they will be respected by friends or colleagues and find opportunities to repay.
3. Treating property properly: It means knowing how to keep it, knowing how to prevent fraud, and choosing someone worthy to entrust, or keep it in a safe place.
4. Treat properly with relatives and clans. If in the field of commerce, it is also necessary to know how to properly treat customers, local dignitaries (there are books called ghosts), kings and gods. Those subjects, when properly treated by the rich, will be pleased, praised, and protected on occasion.
5. Proper treatment of Angels, Saints and the holy goods: Especially properly dealing with samanas who keep the precepts, eliminate wrong views, conceit, laziness and practice patience and humility yield, daily diligence and self-mastery, mental stability and inner purification.
The five conditions mentioned above are true in both respects: Material and spiritual! Because lay people live righteously, know and practice fully these five ways of right conduct, then by past karma, they may become poor, lose all their wealth, they also have happiness. Right faith in mind, thinking that: "Material ups and downs in life are inherent in impermanence! But we are still satisfied, because we have lived in accordance with the good law!". Then their minds are calm!
On the other hand, if a lay person living that righteous path, by fully practicing the five noble conducts, becomes prosperous and richer than before, he will not lose his righteous faith and purity. pure in mind. They think, "Thanks to enjoying the rich fruits planted by good people in my previous life, I now create good karma, fully deal with the five conditions of happiness! And I have reaped good fruits. right in this life is the right thing to do! We shouldn't be so lazy and lazy in cultivating virtue!". That is, in the two cases of "up and down" a lay person with right faith is not swayed by material things! (According to Anguttara Nikaya V. 41: Increase Chi A Function V. 41).
The important point that needs to be repeated here is that through another "Dharma number four", in the canon, the Buddha, taking an opportunity to speak the Dharma to the affluent, friends of the Solitudes, he gave emphasized to the creator of Ky Vien temple that:
- Hey, great lay monk Tu Da Level of Solitude! The four blessings that people consider precious, desirable, honorable, and hard to find are:
1. Let me create legal wealth.
2. When I have a lot of legal wealth, please allow me to create a good name, together with my relatives and ancestors.
3. May I have a long life, the longer the better.
4. When the life is common, please let me go to heaven.
- Hey Tu Tu Level Loneliness! If you want to create conditions that lead to good results and enjoy the four blessings mentioned above, you should plant four good people.
- Hey Tu Tu Level Loneliness! So what are those four good people? Is completely in faith, completely in virtue, completely in generosity, and completely in wisdom (According to Anguttara Nikaya IV. 61: Increase Chi A Function IV. 61).
Moreover, true faith can only be attained when we are fortunate enough to meet an Fully Enlightened One, admire Him and understand the truth of His gospel! Especially to realize the nature of everything that exists in that gospel! A Buddhist who wants to fulfill the precepts must fully observe at least the five precepts, considering them as "basic morality" in life. And the act of giving is also another good dharma, capable of eroding greed and stinginess, a kind of evil that always narrows one's character!
One who attains the wisdom of liberation is one who clearly sees that: Whoever's heart is still polluted by attachments, ill-will, discouragement, agitation, self-forgetfulness, and doubt, he will often do earthly karma. not worth doing, and vice versa will miss opportunities to perform many good deeds! Not to mention people who are used to doing crimes, they neglect good deeds, and as a result, they will gradually lose "prestige" and spend money!
But the virtuous one is different. They always keep the mind pure, observe the motives that motivate them to create, so that they are always ready to remove the afflictive obstacles ( The five afflictions are: 1/ greed, 2 / malice, 3/ laziness plus lethargy, 4/ anxiety plus anxiety, 5/ doubt. For more, read Nyanaponika's book "The Five Mental Hindrances". version number 26. ) waiting to push them into evil karma! And the result of that vigilance, is the attainment of wisdom!
The Buddhists live the righteous way, by cultivating faith, virtue, generosity, and wisdom, they inherit the four happy things: wealth, fame, long life, and rebirth in the heavenly realm. Then they also do not neglect to have fun, and use those blessings to constantly create more good karma, they not only make themselves and their families happy, but also make friends and society. be safe and happy. Accidents of conflict between people and people they always avoid, to regularly act according to the "five ways of treating right" as mentioned above. Especially the proper treatment with the true practitioners, the holy life.
On the contrary, a person who is rich but does not know how to use his wealth to plant good causes and produce these four "happy fruits", is called a person who lives without purpose, squandering his wealth in vain. meaningless. (According to Anguttara Nikaya IV. 61: Increase Chi A Function IV. 61).
On another occasion, the Buddha also explained and classified the different ways of creating and using property, in a discourse titled "The Ten Classes of People Who Create and Use Wealth". Buddha said:
1. A fool, especially someone who likes to create wealth unjustly and then stubbornly keeps it, dare not use it for himself, nor dare to use it for his wife, children, and family.
2. A little lighter is a person who has wealth, created in any way, but only knows how to use it for himself, not caring about his wife, children, and family.
3. The third class of people who make up half of humanity in this world is the type of person who loves to create wealth, whether righteous or not, but only likes to use it for himself and his wife and children in the family. Absolutely do not share with anyone else.
All three of these people inherently despise the law, despise good karma. But if they see the crooks caught by the officials, they also tend to accuse them of evil deeds. That is, they only see the faults of others, but do not like to comment on their own actions.
4. The fourth type of person has the minimum knowledge that: The basic purpose of creating wealth and preserving wealth is to bring happiness to oneself, and fear is one of the problems. happy. Therefore, they strive to create a piece of legal wealth, to use openly first for themselves, and then for their loved ones, with peace of mind.
5. The fifth category of people like peace of mind, especially not being afraid. Therefore, they always strive to create wealth in a right way, so that when using it for themselves or sharing it with others, in both cases, they are satisfied, without being tormented by conscience or afraid of conflict between two ways of getting good and bad.
6. The sixth type of person is someone who acquires wealth completely illegally. But because he was too afraid, he buried it in a secret place, and sometimes he did not dare to use it even to death. So that property does not bring happiness to themselves, or to anyone.
7. The seventh class of people is the type of person who creates property, not only in accordance with the laws of the state, but also in keeping with the doctrine, and they are very satisfied with it. But think: This wealth is not easy to find, so they are only for themselves and their families. They dare not give alms.
8. The eighth class is the class of people who always live according to the right career and right livelihood, using their talents and virtues to create assets, then use them for themselves, their families, and help others.
9. The ninth class of people are people who are rich in humanity, like to go up. When they are rich in the present, they think of the good deeds created in the past, and then they bring their wealth to help the world, turning it into a refuge in the future. They often give alms, do meritorious deeds, build temples, etc.
10. The tenth class of people are the Great Masters, or the Holy King, who have a lot of property. But through wisdom they see that: In that luxury, there is a danger that, if we are easy to keep, we will be led into corruption or entanglement in samsara! Then they always use that property, to bring peace and happiness to others, to target all mankind and sentient beings. Especially in the direction of creating good conditions so that later they will be liberated. (According to Anguttara Nikaya V. 91)
In Tang Chi Aham, there is a passage where the Buddha asked Tu Da Lonely if his family members had prepared "considerate" food?
This sentence must make the reader feel something strange, because a Buddha rarely asks such a curious, "trivial" question!
But according to the commentary, that statement refers to "respect" in the offering. The two words "considerate" mean "respectfully", because the Buddha knew well that the Solitary Ascendant always made offerings to the monks and gave generously to the poor, but he still apprehensive, maybe the servants do it on his behalf, maybe show disrespect, when delivering food to the recipient.
Since then, a question has been raised is whether the attitude of offering or giving alms is polite or not?!
Buddha analyzed:
- Hey Tu Tu Level Loneliness! When a person offers or gives something to another person, the merit of doing that is not determined on the value of the object, but on the sincerity of the person who practices good karma. For example, if a person gives only a humble dish with respect, it is still more blessed than giving a precious object with a superficial, perfunctory, if not scornful! Those who give clothes or food to the monks or poor people but only "let it out" or "invite" them to take advantage, but in fact have no faith in their hearts, no respect, the consequences of attitude At that level, in the next life, people who see food, no matter how delicious it is, will not want to eat it, good or new clothes, worthy of wearing, they will be embarrassed, Go find your old clothes to wear. And their five senses will be slow, inactive. Not to mention children, people eating people in the house will not obey them etc.. Whoever is rich and suffers from this evil, is because his previous life gave him disrespectfully.
On the other hand, the virtue of the recipient is also very important! In connection with this matter, the Buddha told Solitary Ascendum the story of the past life of a Brahmin named Velama. This Brahmin personally faithfully distributed a great deal of food to a crowd of beggars, but unfortunately among them not a single beggar had the minimum virtue to deserve it. that generosity.
Therefore, the Buddha concluded:
- Hey Tu Tu Level Loneliness! Generous giving will of course always yield good results. But giving to one hundred undisciplined people cannot be compared with making offerings to just one fully virtuous recluse, especially saints from the stream-entry onwards! As for making offerings to the Arhats, the Pratyekabuddhas or the Fully Enlightened One, the merits are immeasurable. Just like building a temple, spreading the truth, and protecting the Three Jewels, the blessings are as great as the total number of dust particles that make up the earth.
However, the source of unscrupulous blessings is still the three people worth relying on: Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. In a more understandable way is "taking refuge in the Buddha, taking refuge in the Dharma and taking refuge in the Sangha". At the same time, strictly observe the five precepts of not killing, not stealing, not engaging in sexual misconduct, not telling lies, and not drinking alcohol. Then every day, Buddhists are imbued with the Dharma, and do not forget to spend five or ten minutes to spread compassion to all sentient beings. But the action that creates the highest merit without stagnation is still, after spreading the mind of compassion, one more minute of silence, to visualize impermanence. Because according to the Sutra of Tang Chi A Function IX 20 (A. IX. 20) says, this "Remembrance of impermanence" even lasts as long as a "snap of the finger" There are also many unscrupulous blessings! (Note: Unstained blessings are blessings that lead to liberation, while unsmiling blessings are blessings that will bear good fruit in future lives. Many times by enjoying such good results, people can fall into the world. entanglement, samsara, cannot be liberated).
The above teachings of the Buddha to Tu Da Level of Solitude give us a method of practicing the path from low to high. He will begin by giving alms to bring Buddhists to a more pure level, extending compassion to all beings. Between these two virtues of generosity and purity of mind, is the upholding of precepts, an ability to eliminate the evil, evil roots in the human heart. At the same time, through firmness in serenity, the meditator realizes impermanence again, so as not to be afflicted by any change, change, dissolution, yes or no. In other words, the three stages: Generosity, Precepts, and Meditation are the three steps that will lead Buddhists to the virtue of liberation, seeing that nothing is permanent. Nothing is mine, or mine. What needs to be emphasized here is that there is no other miracle besides meditation that can remove all defilements in the human mind!
The Buddha's analysis of the types of people worthy of giving is also found in another short discourse. Accordingly, Monastic Solitude asked the Buddha:
- How many types of people are worthy to be offered alms?
The Buddha then replied:
- There are two classes: Those who are walking on the path of purity and liberation, and the Arahants or Buddhas who have already reached their destination. (According to Increase Chi A Function II. 27: A. II. 27)
Back to the matter of purity of mind. In the previous passages, the Buddha explained quite fully about the two methods of giving and keeping precepts, but the Zen Dharma was only briefly introduced by him, without giving clear examples, now the Buddha explains a specification. The Buddha said to Tuda Level of Solitude that:
- Hey Tu Tu Level Loneliness! If a person's character is filled with ambition, all his actions, words, and thoughts will be tarnished! Such a person is bound to be swept away by craving, whirling, and at the end of their lifespan, they will receive an extremely dark, afflictive death... For example, a house whose core parts are columns, rafters, thunderstorms and the main walls have rotted before such a flood (According to Tang Chi A Function III. 107-108: A. III. 107-108).
When the nature of mind has been attracted by ambition and afflictions, only meditation can bring purity and help it, but the blessings created by good karma will not work! Therefore, on another occasion, the Buddha taught Asura in Solitude, before a crowd of good men and women, who had just visited him:
- Hey Tutu Level Loneliness and Buddhists! You wholeheartedly protect Ky Vien pagoda every day, fully offering four items of food, clothing, shelter and medicine to the monks... Of course, you are very pleased with the blessing. . But the Tathagata advises you not to get too attached to those blessings! Let's focus our attention on meditation, try to practice staying calm (Piti) in meditation, especially in the tendency to prefer a secluded, pure life. (Originally, the Pāli word "Pìtim pavivekam" means the first ecstasy that flashes within a second or two, after a period of diligent practice of meditation (Jhāna).
When he finished listening to the Buddha's teaching, the Elder Sāriputta continued:
- When the noble disciple of the Buddha attains abiding in bliss and enjoys living in seclusion, he avoids the five kinds of afflictions that are always present in the mind:
1. Pain and sorrow are associated with the senses. (The senses are the "doors of the mind" including: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and touch.)
2. Satisfaction and joy tied to the bases.
3. Pain and sorrow are associated with what the world considers bad.
4. Satisfaction and joy tied to what the world considers bad (Evil people, happy when they succeed in unwholesome things, practitioners avoid that situation).
5. Pain and sorrow are associated with what the world considers good" (The meaning of this sentence is: When a Buddhist unintentionally loses the opportunity to do good, and then regrets it later, that is also a kind of thing. afflictions, can cause pain and sorrow) (According to Anguttara Nikaya V. 176: Increase Chi A Function V. 176).
On another occasion, due to the presence of the Solitary Ascendant and a group of Buddhists, the Buddha said to the Elder Sariputra:
- Hey Sariputra! The holy lay person who strictly observes the five precepts, is careful in all his daily actions, will easily settle down in the dhamma meditation, and will manifest the four noble thoughts:
1. I have destroyed the road to hell.
2. I have destroyed the path to animals.
3. I have destroyed the path to the hungry ghosts.
4. I have destroyed the path that leads to Asuras or other lower births (Destinies of complete misfortune, for never seeing the light of truth). Then they know for sure and can declare: "They have entered the noble path of Stream-entry. They no longer degenerate into the eternal suffering of samsara and the pure fruit of liberation they will eventually attain.
But based on what beliefs, the holy lay person can observe the five precepts of not killing, not stealing, not committing adultery, not lying, not drinking, and can realize the four precious thoughts. just told?
- Hey Sariputra! A lay person is noble by relying on unshakable faith in the Buddha, on his unshakable faith in the Dharma, on his unshakable faith in the Sangha, on his unwavering faith. change in virtue, a firm foundation of liberation, constantly praised by the saints. Because the pure precepts do not make the mind dull, do not make the thinking flawed so that it is susceptible to the influence of subtle evils. The pure precepts are the first step to liberation, or the beginning of peace and the arising of wisdom.
Among the three realms of samsara, there is no more precious happiness than the realization of the four precious thoughts mentioned above! And meditation in Buddhism not only helps practitioners to achieve those goals, but it also helps the holy ones to purify their souls easily without residue (According to Tang Chi A Function V. 179: Anguttara Nikaya V. 179).
On another occasion, the Buddha expounded on the attainment of Stream-winner Sainthood to Solitude, in three different ways. This teaching of the World-Honored One is only for you. Buddha said:
- Hey Tu Tu Level Loneliness! When the holy lay person has eliminated all five fears and fully absorbed the four factors leading to stream-entry, and at the same time, if he understands and masters his meditation, he will know for himself that he has Step into Saint Luu, without waiting for anyone to confirm! On the contrary, people who regularly violate the five precepts of killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and drinking alcohol, these five sins will bring them five constant fears both in mind and body. , not only in this life, but also in the next life.
- Hey Tu Tu Level Loneliness! Furthermore, for the holy lay person, by keeping the five precepts is the first way to put an end to the five sins, to avoid the four evil paths, through unshakable faith in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha is the second way, Entering into the Saint Fruit of Stream-entry, and through meditation is the third way to maintain absolute purity so that liberated wisdom arises, awakens awareness, and clearly sees that one's cycle of samsara can be severed from the place where the samsara can be cut. which. (According to Increase Chi A Function X. 92: Anguttara Nikaya X. 92).
A story is recorded in the sutras that: "Once, the Solitary Ascendantutta went to visit the Buddha on a clear morning. Duy felt it was too early, so instead of going to the temple, he stopped to see the monastic scene of the monks. Brahmin monks traveling nearby, these ascetics, who knew that Tuda Level Solitude was a disciple of the Buddha, asked:
- Hey, guardian of the Loneliness! How knowledgeable is your teacher, the ascetic Gotama?
The Monastic Level of Solitude replied:
- I cannot measure the Master's understanding.
Again the Brahmins asked:
- So how deep is the level of the Buddhist Sangha?
The Monastic Level of Solitude also happily said:
- I am not qualified to discuss the knowledge of the Saints.
But when the Brahmin wandering ascetics asked him about his own knowledge, the Solitary Ascendant calmly replied:
- Hello, monks! My knowledge I can easily express! Just ask that you are the host, please preach your knowledge to me first, and I am the guest, I will present later.
So Tuda Level Solitude listened to the Brahmin ascetics, upholding their prejudices. The first Taoist said: "The human soul is inherently immortal". As for the second Taoist: "The soul is not immortal". The third Taoist said: "The human soul is finite", different from the fourth Taoist who said: "The human soul is infinite". Then the fifth Taoist firmly said: "Body and soul are one, without distinction! As long as the body is still a soul, if the body dies, the soul also dies". (Translator's addition: This is a theory of both materialism and annihilation). Particularly, the sixth Taoist said: "The body and the soul are two different entities. Only the body can be destroyed and moved, but the soul is not destroyed,
In addition to those six prejudices, two other groups of Taoists raised two opposing prejudices: "First, after his death, the saint's soul will become eternal in a realm of Ultimate Bliss. Second. , after closing their eyes, the souls of the transcendent ones will disappear!".
Now, when it was the turn of the Sorcerer to Loneliness, he said:
- Any theory in the prejudices that you have just presented, are also by you thinking, guessing, or by hearing others say. In either case, by reflection, or by others, such prejudices are rooted in many different conditions, and any theory with conditions is only temporary, temporary! What is temporary, impermanent, is inherently the cause of unsatisfactoriness and suffering. Those who think like that will be disappointed, and then fall because of untrue beliefs.
After hearing that, the Brahmins traveling around the country immediately asked Sorcerer to Loneliness to express his faith. The Monastic Level of Solitude seriously stated:
- All things are inherently temporary, impermanent, and lead to suffering! Then suffering does not belong to anyone, but to the dharma of the world. Those who cling to impermanent dharmas, thinking, "That's not me, this is myself" or "That's not mine, this is mine" etc... Then they will endlessly astray, and they will carry suffering as their baggage.
To find a way to defend, the Brahmin wandering ascetics hurriedly defended that:
- The things we have just presented are great truths, and that belief is never lost in our hearts. We only describe what we perceive to be true. And moreover, we know many solutions to end suffering. When we apply that secret to the cessation of suffering, we will not be influenced by our opinions, etc.
These Brahmin ascetics, although they tried to refute it with their mouths, but in their hearts they were still embarrassed! In the end, they felt that they could not convince the Solitary Ascendant, so they all sat still...
Then Tuda Level Solitude quietly visited the Buddha. He narrated the conversation he had just had with the Blessed One, and was praised by the Master:
- Hey Tu Tu Level Loneliness! He was right! The Tathagata advised him to sometimes guide such mistaken people closer to the truth.
Then the Buddha blessed the Solitary Ascendant, and at the same time gave a discourse to him alone, to encourage this great lay follower to proceed firmly on the path to the attainment of Sainthood.
When Tuda Level of Solitude had gone, the Buddha told the story and declared to the Sangha that:
- Even a bhikkhu who has lived in the Church for a hundred years may not have been fully absorbed in the teachings to be able to respond to the Brahmin ascetics properly. (According to Increase Chi A Function X. 93: AX 93).
Finally, there are two more accounts that can be told, before moving on to chapter VI. That was the two times when Tu Da Level of Solitude was lying on a hospital bed, asking the Buddha to allow a recluse to come to the house to preach the Dharma to him. Because Tu Da Level of Solitude was a great benefactor of the Sangha, the two people who were sent by the Buddha in turn to preach the Dharma were the two Chief Apostles.
For the first time, Venerable Ananda came and graciously told Tuda Level Solitude that:
- Hey, friend of the Lonely Level! A mind not mature in mindfulness is constantly afraid of death, and afraid of what it will receive in the next life. The reason is because they lack the four noble beliefs: Believing in the Buddha's treasure, believing in the Dharma, believing in the Sangha, and believing in the Virtue as a life-saving equipment in samsara.
"But, friend Level Loneliness! A friend is someone who has unshakable faith in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. As long as he keeps his precepts completely pure, the path of liberation is not far away Especially at present, you have attained the path of Entry (According to Samyutta Nikaya 55.27: Journal of A Function No. 55.27).
For the second time, the Elder Sāriputta came to the hospital bed of Tuda Level Loneliness and analyzed that:
- Hey, friend of the Lonely Level! For those who live according to lust, untrained spirit, not pure, hell is the place they will see.
But, friend of the Lonely Level! A friend is someone who has the Three Jewels in his mind. Dao friends know to keep the precepts pure, not to let evil dharmas attract. If you now diligently recollect the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and then think through your virtues, body, speech, and mind, that your body and mind are always perfect, then the friend's illness will be relieved, thanks to the Dharma meditation. so.
Besides, this friend of the Level of Solitude! Don't forget that a friend is a person who has right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. In the life of a friend in accordance with the Noble Eightfold Path, the wisdom of absolute liberation will arise. A friend who has entered the holy stream, has ten noble and good conditions, is spiritually heading towards the goal of nirvana, then through meditation, his illness will disappear. Especially when the friend strengthens the strength to stay, remembering the baggage is the good karma of a great Buddhist Dharma protector. This is the most effective and fastest way to cure afflictions and bodily ailments.
Thera Sāriputta focused his mind on speaking the Dharma. When the word "one" has just ended, the pain of Tu Da Level of Solitude is gone. He sat up refreshed, got up from his hospital bed, and personally brought the lunch offering to Professor Sariputra. After that, he discussed Buddhism with the Elder Sariputra for a long time, like a healthy person.
Therefore, before returning to Ky Vien pagoda, the Elder Sāriputta still recited a few verses and gave Tu Da Level of Solitude as follows:
"Those who believe in the Buddha, the Dharma,
and the Sangha,
remember that they are truthful,
have a peaceful life.
Those who believe in the Holy
Sangha, Right View and Good Roots,
Suffering and Poverty cannot be touched.
Life is precious!
Those who believe in the Three Jewels
Enter the precepts, concentrate on the
Dharma, and do the right things.
The Buddha's teachings are not wrong!
The wise always develop
Faith, morality, and concentration. The
saints are always friendly and the
Buddha praises them immensely."
(According to Samyutta Nikaya 55. 26: Journal A Function No. 55. 26 - N. D. escape translated into rhyme).
Of the eighteen sermons to Tu Da Level of Solitude, recorded in the Tripitaka, fourteen were spoken by the Buddha by chance. A discourse on the Buddha asked a question by Tutu Da Loneliness. Another discourse the Buddha gave after listening to the story of Asceticism told the story of his dialogue with the Brahmin ascetics. And finally, there are two sermons by Venerable Ananda and Elder Sāriputta who came to the hospital bed of Tuda Level Loneliness to remind.
These eighteen discourses demonstrate that in the Buddhist treasury there must be an important section, dedicated to lay or lay Buddhists, when they want to attain Sainthood, without living in the Church!
[VI] LAST TIME OF LIFE...
The great lay lay follower, Tuda Level Solitude, fell ill for the third time, very seriously. The pain and weariness of the body was a great obstacle to mental concentration. Once again, Tu Da Level of Solitude invited the two Great Apostles of the Buddha, Ananda and Sariputra, to the bedside to help.
When the Venerable Sariputra saw the pale face of the Solitary Ascendant, he knew that he was about to die. The elder then said:
- Hey Tu Tu Level Loneliness! Fellow friends, practice the dharma of liberation by definitively letting go of attachment to the six senses: the eye faculty, the ear faculty, the sense of envy, the tongue faculty, the body faculty, and the mind faculty! You should indifferently, objectively look at those six senses, see them as the six causes that have long caused you suffering. Second, the friend needs to liberate himself by separating his mind from the worldly form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharmas. Don't let your friend's six senses (eye consciousness, ear consciousness, envy consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, and consciousness) follow them! Thus, the six "suffering factors", or otherwise known as the "five aggregates" (including the aggregate of form, the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of formations, and the aggregate of consciousness) that constitute a person, will not cooperate. with "
At that time, Venerable Ananda was also present at the bedside. The Monastic Level of Solitude listened attentively to Elder Sāriputta preaching the Dharma. He tried to make his mind act according to the teacher's prompts...
Suddenly, a few tears welled up in the corner of the patient's eyes, and when Venerable Ananda saw this, he was moved with compassion and said:
- Hey, friend of the Lonely Level! You should keep your mind calm and pure!"
But Tuda Level of Solitude weakly replied, "Oh! Venerable Ananda! I can't keep my mind at peace! I am so happy and moved, because up until now, although I have lived with the Church. and my guru, I have never heard such a profound, wonderful teaching!
Immediately the Elder Shariputra explained:
- Hey, friend of the Lonely Level! In that secret sermon, the Buddha only preached to the monastics in peace and quiet. Because for lay people, it is too abstract, difficult to understand. But this time, the World-Honored One instructed the poor to repeat the path to his friends, because at the moment the friend's soul is no different from that of a great recluse.
The Monastic Level of Solitude immediately rejoiced and continued:
- White Elder Sāriputta! From now on, this Solitary Ascendant asks the holy Sangha and the Buddha to grant such miraculous teachings to the lay lay people! Because, although living the life of a layperson, there are many people who are full of holy life, whose dharma eyes are already shining, and only a little dust remains. If they are fortunate enough to hear such profound teachings, they will surely be liberated, otherwise they have to wait for good conditions to leave home, only then can they enjoy the next dharma, it is pitiful. .
The difference between the teaching that the Elder Sariputra just gave to the Asceticism of Solitude, and what the Buddha explained to him before, is the effect of hitting the spirit directly, when people can really distinguish. How the five senses and worldly dharmas, which are only external, and constantly infiltrate the senses, combine with the internal demons of greed, hatred, and delusion, causing spiritual suffering.
Here, the sermon is directly going into practical issues, and the ultimate goal of liberation, not as a theory that helps the listener understand a Buddhist aspect. In other words, Venerable Sariputra had just shown the Solitary Ascendant the methods of practice, because he had already attained the path of Stream-entry. He compared it to a gardener who already has a magic mirror in his hand. You just need to know how to look into that magic mirror, to see for yourself the poisonous weeds and remove them, and then cultivate the good flowers, to be at peace. And the garden is the human soul.
Loneliness is a low-ranking saint whose awareness has manifested. Elder Sariputra simply pointed out to him the empty and temporary nature of the five aggregates that both cling to and destroy each other, so that he could realize for himself the truths of impermanence, suffering, and not-self within him. .
Moreover, even though it is a practical method, listeners can still be divided into two types: The first type is listening to meditate. This category receives benefits of only five-tenths. The second type has been imbued with Buddhism, heard and immediately practiced, liberation is a sure thing! Usually lay Buddhists fall into the first category. As for the pure monastic monastics, they belong to the second category. But Solitude in this case is in that second category!
For elementary lay Buddhists, knowing the constant change of things is just a knowledge. But for the pure monastics, that knowledge is a method to eliminate the defilements arising from greed for life and fear of death!
If we observe and follow the Venerable Sariputta's presentation of the Dharma, leading step-by-step, leading the spirit of Solitude to the liberation of Nirvana, then we will see that the Sotapanna Loneliness, never before had heard a core discourse, described in such final terms!
In the moment of death, Tu Da Level of Solitude, thanks to that dharma, was able to separate himself spiritually, from worldly attachments, especially attachment to the body (referring to life), and then calmed down. wise in mindfulness, he is indeed a blessed and perfect layman. Many Sa-disciples of the Buddha are also not necessarily equal!
It can be said that this is a rare case of a rare holy layperson listening to a peerless teacher presenting the most effective method of liberation!
When the Venerable Sariputra and Venerable Ananda finished their last reminders, the Solitary Ascendant completely remained in right concentration. Then he died, was reborn in the heaven of Tusita Dau Sat, where the enlightened spirit Tu Da Level Solitude met "the youngest daughter" who is now a fairy.
But what is worth remembering and admiring the late great benefactor of Buddhism here is that after joining the Thien Cong, "he" was the guardian angel of the Three Jewels most fervently. According to the scriptures, Ky Vien Pagoda, after the cremation ceremony of Tu Da Grade Lone, had many nights when the gods visited and worshiped. Bright aura. The leader of those Angels is, of course, the late enlightened monk Tu Da Level Loneliness.
One day this great Dharma Guardian Angel came to pay homage to the Buddha, and also made offerings with these verses:
"Jeta Sanctuary Buddha,
temple, Sangha an identity not.
French royal India mundane,
This source of happiness in the short-enabled.
Kiep old only has shape?
Which body, speech and mind plying net Tu.
Protecting the Three Jewels,
Helping the world,
gaining fame, not blind, spiritual. How to know yourself,
Thong in the righteous Dharma, unconsciously in the dreamland. Practice
forging according to the early virtues,
Tu Da Huong, now thanks. realms of God.
Emulating "Relic" Holy sage (*)
net interest, net reviews, sorrow filter in.
he let him unmatched,
The super-human being planted by Buddha today."
(*) "Sariputra" refers to the Venerable Sariputta, who received the level of Solitude before the moment of death.
And with this offering verse, we would like to end the story of Tutu Da Loneliness, a peerless Dharma Protector, while the Buddha was still alive!
-ooOoo-
