Nalakapana Sutta
(Nalakapàna sutta)
Like this I hear.
At one time the Blessed One was staying among the Kosala people at Nalakapana, in the Palasa grove.
At that time many famous good family men, because of their faith in the Blessed One, had left home, left home, and lived without family, such as Venerable Anuruddha, Venerable Nandiya, Venerable Kimbila, Venerable Bhagu, Venerable Kundadhana, Venerable Revata, Venerable Ananda and some other famous good men.
At that time, the Blessed One was sitting in the middle of the sky, surrounded by a group of bhikkhus. Then the World-Honored One, for the sake of these good men, said to the bhikkhus:
"Bhikkhus, those good men, out of faith in me, have left home, left home, and lived without family. Monks, do those bhikkhus rejoice in the holy life?
When they were told that, the bhikkhus kept silent. The second time... the third time, then the Blessed One, for the sake of those good men, said to the Male-stilts:
"Bhikkhus, those good men, out of faith in me, have left home, left home, and lived without family. Monks, do those bhikkhus rejoice in the holy life?
Until the third time, those bhikkhus kept silent.
Then the World-Honored One thought thus: "Now, let me ask these good men."
Then the Blessed One said to the venerable Anuruddha:
— Anuruddhas, do you rejoice in the holy life?
— Venerable Sir, we truly rejoice in the holy life.
— Good, good, Anuruddhas. It is fitting, Anuruddhas, that you, good men, who, out of faith, renounced home, lived without family, rejoiced in the holy life. While you, Anuruddhas, in your youth, in your youth, in your youth, with your jet-black hair, may enjoy sensual pleasures, your time, Anuruddhas, in your good youth, in your youth , with jet-black hair, left home again, abandoned the family, lived without a family. You, Anuruddhas, did not leave home because of the king's orders, renounced the family, and lived without family. They did not because of the orders of thieves that ordained, abandoned the family, living without family. They are not because of debt, not because of fear, not because they lost their job, but left home, left home, and lived without family. But is it with a thought like this: “I am born, grow old, die, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, oppression of the brain, oppressed by suffering, dominated by suffering. However, I wish I could see an end to this whole aggregate of suffering.” That you, Anuruddhas, out of faith, renounced homelessness, living without family?
— Yes, venerable sir.
— And so, Anuruddhas, what should a good man do? O Anuruddhas, detachment from sensual pleasures, detachment from unwholesome dharmas. If you can't experience joy or another peaceful state, the time when lust invades the mind and stays, anger invades the mind and stays, laxity and laziness... agitation, regret... doubt... unhappiness... entertainment invades the mind and stays. Anuruddha, when he is not separated from sensual pleasures, not yet separated from unwholesome dharmas, he does not attain bliss or other peaceful state. Anuruddha, when he is separated from sensual pleasures, away from unwholesome states, he attains bliss or some other more tranquil state, when lust does not invade the mind and dwells, anger does not overwhelm the mind and dwells, lethargy and sluggish restless… too restless… doubtful… unsatisfied… entertainment does not invade the mind and stay. O Anuruddhas, abstaining from sensual desire and unwholesome dharmas
O Anuruddhas, what do you think of me? The gonorrhea related to the defilements arising after existence, fearing, leading to the result of suffering, leading to birth, old age, and death in the future, these gonorrhea have not been eradicated by the Tathagata. Therefore, the Tathagata after thinking and analyzing, using a dharma; after thinking analytically, patient life a dharma; after thinking analytically, abandoning a dharma, after thinking analytically, abandoning a dharma?
— Venerable sir, we don't think so of the Blessed One: "What cankers are related to defilements, arise after existence, are fearful, lead to the fruit of suffering, and lead to birth, old age, and death? In the future, these taints have not been eliminated by the Tathagata. Therefore, the Tathagata after thinking and analyzing, using a dharma; after thinking analytically, patient life a dharma; after thinking analytically, give up a dharma; after thinking analytically, cut off one dharma". World-Honored One, we think of the Blessed One as follows: "What cankers are related to defilements, arise after existence, are feared, lead to the fruit of suffering, and lead to future birth, old age, and death? , the taints have been eliminated by Tathagata. Therefore, the Tathagata after thinking and analyzing, using a dharma; after thinking analytically, endure a dharma; after thinking analytically, give up a dharma; After thinking analytically,
— Good, good, Anuruddhas! The cankers or afflictions related to afflictions, arising after existence, fearing, leading to the fruit of suffering, leading to birth, old age, and death in the future have been eradicated by the Tathagata, cut off the roots, made as the trunk of the tala tree cannot be reborn, cannot arise in the future. Just as, Anuruddhas, the tala tree at the top of the tree has been cut off, unable to grow any more, so, Anuruddhas, the gonorrhea or afflictions related to affliction... have been eradicated by the Tathagata, cut at the root, for as the trunk of a tala tree cannot be born again, cannot arise in the future. Therefore, the Tathagata after thinking and analyzing, using a dharma; after thinking analytically, patient life a dharma; after thinking analytically, give up a dharma; after thinking analytically, cut off a dharma.
Hey Anuruddhas, what do you think? Seeing any special purpose, the Tathagata explained the rebirth of disciples who had passed away, passed away, saying. "This one is reborn here, this one is reborn here."
— Venerable Sir, for us, all dharmas are based on the Blessed One as the basis, with the Blessed One as our leader, and with the Blessed One as our base. Venerable Sir, it would be good if the Blessed One preached this meaning. After hearing the Blessed One, the bhikkhus will uphold and uphold.
— Anuruddhas, the Tathagata is not for the purpose of deceiving the masses, not for the sake of flattering the masses, not for the sake of profit, honor, fame, or material gain, not for the sake of thinking: then the people will know Me"; where the Tathagata explained the rebirth of his deceased disciples, saying: "This one is reborn here, this one is reborn here".
