Ðạo Phật.
 
 
                           
 
Phật ra đời vì một nhân duyên lớn: Khai thị chúng sanh ngộ nhập Phật tri kiến. 
 
Người đời thường nói một cách hời hợt cho qua chuyện, "Ðạo nào cũng tốt!". Lời nói ấy, hoặc vì xã giao để cho vui lòng khách, hoặc vì chưa rõ bề mặt trong của các Ðạo khác nhau thế nào, nên mới ra như thế. Thật ra về mục đích thì đạo nào cũng có giá trị của nó, chẳng qua chỉ hơn nhau về từng bậc cao thấp mà thôi. Nhưng mục đích tốt dù sao, cũng chưa đủ. Ðiều quan trọng là làm sao thực hiện được mục đích ấy, và đem lợi ích rộng lớn cho đời. Thử hỏi nếu đạo nào cũng có giá trị như nhau, thì sao trước đây 2500 năm, trong lúc xứ Ấn độ đã có 94 thứ đạo rồi, mà đức Phật Thích Ca còn giáng sinh làm chi nữa? 
 
Chẳng qua các Ðạo tuy nhiều, mà chưa được toàn "chơn, thiện, mỹ", nên đức Phật mới ứng thân thị hiện, dạy cho chúng sanh đạo Vô Thượng Chánh Ðẳng Chánh Giác, ngõ hầu giải thoát khỏi khổ sanh tử luân hồi, được tự tại vô ngại như Phật. Kinh Pháp Hoa chép, "Vì một nhân duyên lớn, Phật mới xuất hiện ra đời". 
 
Nhân duyên lớn ấy là gì? Chính là: "Khai thị chúng sanh ngộ nhập Phật tri kiến", để cho chúng sanh được nhờ đó mà đổi mê ra ngộ thấy tánh tỏ tâm, vượt sống khỏi chết, lìa khổ được vui. 
 
Ðịnh Nghĩa 

1. Chữ Ðạo nghĩa là gì? Chữ đạo có ba nghĩa: Ðạo là con đường; Ðạo là bổn phận; Ðạo là lý tánh tuyệt đối, là bản thể. 
 
a) Ðạo là con đường, như người ta thường dùng trong những chữ: nhân đạo, thiên đạo, địa ngục đạo, ngạ quỷ đạo, súc sanh đạo. Phàm là con đường thì có tốt, xấu, có thiện, ác v.v...Theo đạo Phật, h còn trong vòng đối đãi, thì không thể gọi hoàn toàn rốt ráo. 
 
b) Ðạo là bổn phận, như người ta thường dùng những chữ: đạo vua tôi, đạo thầy trò, đạo vợ chồng v.v...Phàm là bổn phận thì thường chịu ảnh hưởng của phong tục hay tập quán. Phong tục và tập quán của nước này không giống nước kia. Vì vậy, chữ Ðạo là bổn phận cũng chưa đúng với nghĩa chữ Ðạo mà nhà Phật muốn nói. 
 
c) Ðạo là* lý tánh tuyệt đối, là bản theă, nó lìa nói năng, không thể nghĩ bàn. Ðức Lão tử nói: "Ðạo mà nói ra được, không phải là đạo". Xưa có người hỏi một vị Tổ Sư: "Ðạo là gì?". Tổ sư đáp: "Trước Phật Oai Âm Vương, không có tên Phật và chúng sanh, lúc ấy chính là Ðạo". 
 
Chữ Ðạo của nhà Phật chính là đồng nghĩa với bản thể vậy. 
 
2. Chữ Phật nghĩa là gì? Chữ Phật, nói cho đúng tiếng Phạn là Bouddha (Phật Ðà). Người Trung Hoa dịch nghĩa là Giác Giả, (bực đã giác ngộ, sáng suốt hoàn toàn). Giác có ba bực:  
 
A) Tự giác: Nghĩa là tự giác ngộ hoàn toàn do phước huệ và công phu tu hành, khác với phàm phu là những người còn mê muội, bị luân hồi trong cõi trần lao, khổ hải. 
 
B) Giác tha: Nghĩa là mình đã giác ngộ, lại đem phương pháp giác ngộ ấy dạy cho những người tu hành được giác ngộ như mình. Người tu theo Tiểu Thừa không thể có được giác tha, vì chỉ lo giải thoát cho mình. Chỉ người tu theo Ðại Thừa mới có được giác tha, nghĩa là giác ngộ cho hết thảy chúng sanh đang chìm đắm. 
 
C) Giác hạnh viên mãn: Nghĩa là giác ngộ hoàn toàn đầy đủ cho mình và cho người. Những bậc Bồ Tát, tuy đã giác ngộ cho mình và cho người, nhưng công hạnh chưa viên mãn, nên chưa gọi được là "Giác Giác Hạnh Viên Mãn". Chỉ có Phật mới có * được gọi là Giác Hạnh Viên Mãn. 
 
Chữ Phật là một danh từ chung để gọi những bậc đã tự giác, giác tha và giác hạnh viên mãn, chứ không phải là một danh từ riêng để gọi một người nào nhất định. Ai tu hành được chứng quả như đã nói trên đều được gọi là Phật cả. 
 
3. Ðạo Phật nghĩa là gì? Theo những định nghĩa về chữ Ðạo và chữ Phật đã nói trên, chúng ta có thể giải thích chữ Ðạo Phật như sau:  Ðạo Phật là con đường chơn chánh, hoàn toàn sáng suốt đưa đến bản thể của sự vật, là lý tánh tuyệt đối, lìa tất cả hư vọng phân biệt, mà các đấng giác ngộ hoàn toàn đã phát minh ra. Ðạo Phật gồm tất cả tự lợi và lợi tha, tự giác, giác tha và có công hạnh độ mình, độ người được hoàn toàn thành tựu, rốt ráo viên mãn. 
  
B- Chánh Ðề 
Ðạo Phật có từ lúc nào? có hai nghĩa:  Ðứng về phương diện bản thể mà xét thì Ðạo Phật có từ vô thỉ (nghĩa là không có đầu mối, không có giới hạn ở trong thời gian). Vì Ðạo Phật là bản tánh sáng suốt của chúng sanh, nên có chúng sanh là có Ðạo Phật; mà chúng sanh đã có từ vô thỉ thì Ðạo Phật cũng có từ vô thỉ. Ðứng về phương diện lịch sử và hạn cuộc trong thế giới này mà nói, thì Ðạo Phật đã có từ 2501 (1) năm nay (tính đến năm 1957), trước Thiên Chúa Giáo 544 năm. 
  
Ai khai sáng ra Ðạo Phật? 
 
Tín đồ Ðạo Phật cần phải biết lịch sử đức Giáo Chủ của mình. 
 
Dưới đây, xin kể sơ lược những điểm chính của đời đức Giáo Chủ, người đã khai sáng ra Ðạo Phật, tức là đức Phật Thích Ca Mâu Ni. Ðức Phật Thích Ca Mâu Ni, nguyên là Thái Tử nước Ca Tỳ La Vệ (Kapilavastu) xứ Trung Ấn Ðộ, Phụ hoàng tên Tịnh Phạn Vương Ðầu Ðà Nà (Sudhodana); Mẫu hoàng tên là Ma Da (Maya). Họ Ngài là Kiều Ðáp Ma, xưa dịch là Cù Ðàm, tên Ngài làTất Ðạt Ða (Shidartha). Còn chữ Thích Ca (Sakya), Tàu dịch là Năng Nhơn: Năng là năng lực, Nhơn là từ bi. Mâu Ni (Muni) nghĩa là Tịch Mặc: Tịch là yên lặng, không bị khổ vui làm động tâm; Mặc là lặng lẽ, không bị phiền não khuấy rối, độ mình độ người, công đức đầy đủ. 
 
Lúc nhỏ Ngài có trí tuệ sáng suốt và tài năng phi thường. Lớn lên nhìn thấy nhân sinh thống khổ, thế cuộc vô thường, nên Ngài cương quyết xuất gia tu hành, tìm đường giải thoát cho mình và cho người, ngõ hầu đưa tất cả chúng sanh lên bờ giác ngộ. 
 
Sau sáu năm tu khổ hạnh trong núi Tuyết (Hymalaya), Ngài thấy tu khổ hạnh ép xác như thế, không thể đạt được chân lý, nên Ngài đi qua núi Koda, ngồi dưới gốc cây Bồ Ðề (Tất Bát La, dịch âm theo tiếng Ấn Ðộ) và thề rằng: "Nếu ta không thành đạo, thì dù thịt nát xương tan, ta cũng quyết không đứng dậy khỏi chỗ này". Với chí hùng dũng cương quyết ấy, sau 49 ngày tư duy, Ngài thấy rõ chân tướng của vũ trụ nhân sanh và chứng đạo Bồ Ðề. Sau khi thành đạo, Ngài chu du khắp xứ, thuyết pháp độ sinh, để chúng sanh chuyển mê thành ngộ, lìa khổ được vui. Suốt thời gian 49 năm, như một vị lương y đại tài, xem bịnh cho thuốc, Ngài đã dắt dẫn chúng sanh lên đường hạnh phúc và vạch cho mọi người con đường giác ngộ giải thoát. 
 
Ðến 80 tuổi, Ngài nhập Niết Bàn ở thành Câu Thi Na, trong rừng Ta La (Song Thọ). Lúc bấy giờ, nhằm ngày Rằm tháng 2 âm lịch. 
 
Giáo lý Ðạo Phật như thế nào? 
 
Giáo lý của đạo Phật gồm trong 3 tạng kinh điển là Kinh, Luật, Luận. 
 
1. Kinh: Kinh là những lời của đức Phật Thích Ca đã nói khi còn tại thế, để dạy chúng sanh dứt trừ phiền não và đạt đến quả Niết Bàn. 
 
2. Luật: Luật là những giới luật mà Phật đã chế ra cho các đệ tử, để các đệ tử răn chừa các điều dữ, tu tập các điều lành, trau dồi thân tâm cho thanh tịnh. 
 
3. Luận: Luận là những sách phần nhiều do các đệ tử Phật làm ra để bàn giải rõ ràng nghĩa lý mầu nhiệm trong kinh, luật hoặc quyết đoán tánh, tướng của các Pháp, phân biệt những lẽ phải *chẳng củam chánh đạo và tà đạo, khiến cho người đời khỏi nhận lầm phải trái, chánh tà. 
 
Tam tạng kinh điển lại chia làm hai loại là Ðại Thừa và Tiểu Thừa. 
 
Chữ Thừa nghĩa là chở, có chỗ cũng gọi là Thặng, nghĩa là cổ xe. Thừa hay Thặng đều có hàm ý nghĩa là: Giáo lý của Phật có công năng như một chiếc xe, đưa chúng sanh từ nơi cõi trần lao phiền não đến cảnh giới an vui thanh tịnh, từ biển khổ luân hồi đến Niết Bàn, giải thoát. 
Ðại thừa như là cỗ xe lớn, có thể chở nhiều người trong một lúc; trái lại Tiểu Thừa như là một cỗ xe nhỏ, chỉ chở mỗi lúc một vài người mà thôi. 
 
Sở dĩ giáo lý Ðạo Phật chia ra làm Ðại Thừa và Tiểu Thừa như thế, vì căn cơ và nguyện vọng chúng sanh không đồng nhau. Những hạng người nào nhận thấy mình chỉ đủ sức để giải thoát cho riêng phần mình mà thôi, như chiếc xe nhỏ chở được một vài người, thì theo giáo lý Tiểu Thừa. 
 
Những hạng người nào tự nhận thấy mình có thể vừa giải thoát cho mình và cho người ra khỏi sanh tử luân hồi, tự nguyện độ mình và người cùng đi đến Niết Bàn, như một cỗ xe lớn, cùng chở trong một lúc được nhiều người, thì theo Ðại Thừa. Hạng người này rõ biết phiền não, sanh tử như huyển hóa, nên không chịu sớm an vui ở quả vị cuối cùng của mình, mà thường độ sanh không bao giờ biết mỏi mệt; và vì nhận thấy chúng sanh còn đau khổ, thì mình chưa có thể an vui được. 
 
Sự Truyền Bá Của Ðạo Phât: 
 
Sau khi Phật Thích Ca nhập diệt, hai vị đại đệ tử của Phật là Ngài Ca Diếp và Ngài A Nan thay Phật hoằng truyền Phật pháp ở Ấn độ. Ðó là thời kỳ thứ nhứt. Thời kỳ thứ hai do các vị Tổ sư Long Thọ, Mã Minh và Vô Trước lãnh đạo. Thời kỳ thứ ba do các vị Tổ sư Long Trì, Thiện Vô Úy và Liên Hoa Sanh đảm nhiệm. 
 
Từ Ấn Ðộ, Phật Giáo lan truyền vào các nước lân cận, rồi toàn cõi Á Ðông, và cuối cùng toàn cả thế giới. Sự truyền bá này đi theo hai hướng: một hướng về phương Bắc và một hướng về phương Nam. (Xem Lịch sử truyền bá Phật Giáo khóa 5) 
Về phương Bắc, thì gọi là Bắc Phương hay là Bắc Tôn Phật Giáo, hay Ðại Thừa Phật Giáo, gồm có những nước: Tây Tạng, Trung Hoa, Mông Cổ, Mãn Châu, Cao Ly, Nhật Bản, Việt Nam v.v..

Sự Lợi ích Của Ðạo Phật: 
 
Mục đích của Ðạo Phật là đem lại những kết quả đẹp đẽ sau này cho chúng sanh:  
1. Chơn thường: Chúng sanh trôi lăn, lặn hụp trong biển sanh tử luân hồi; chúng sanh sống trong cảnh vô thường, khi trẻ khi già, khi lành khi ốm, khi sống khi chết...Ðạo Phật đem lại cho người tu hành một quả vị là không bao giờ bị luật vô thường nói trên chi phối. 
 
2. Chơn lạc: Chúng sanh đang sống trong cảnh giới tối tăm, buồn tủi, khổ đau; nếu có vui cũng chỉ vui được trong chốc lát, như người khát, uống nước mặn vào, đỡ khát trong chốc lát, rồi về sau lại càng khát hơn lúc đầu. Ðạo Phật có mục đích đem lại cho kẻ tu hành một sự an vui toàn vẹn và bất tận. 
 
3. Chơn ngã: Chúng sanh bị không biết bao nhiêu nghịch cảnh ở chung quanh chi phối, ràng buộc, như kẻ tù tội bị giam hãm trong ngục thất, không bao giờ được tự do hoạt động theo ý muốn của mình. Ðạo Phật có mục đích làm cho những người tu hành được giải thoát hoàn toàn ra ngoài những trói buộc nói trên, làm cho con người đầy đủ năng lực để thực hiện ý nguyện tốt đẹp của mình, và sống một cuộc đời an nhiên tự tại. 
 
4. Chơn tịnh: Chúng sanh đang sống trong cảnh giới ô trọc, lấm láp trong bùn nhơ của cõi tục, từ trong tâm hồn cho đến ngoài thể chất. Ðạo Phật có mục đích làm cho người tu hành gạn lọc được bao nhiêu ô trọc của cõi đời, được sống một cuộc sống trong trắng, tinh khiết, không vướng chút bận nhơ của trần tục. 
 
Không phải chỉ trong vị lai, Ðạo Phật mới đem lại lợi ích cho đời, ngay trong xã hội hiện tại, Ðạo Phật cũng đem lại nhiều lợi ích quý báu:  
 
- Ðạo Phật, nhờ tinh thần Từ Bi, làm cho xã hội, nhân loại thương yêu nhau hơn. 
 
- Ðạo Phật, nhờ ánh sáng Trí Tuệ, làm cho xã hội, nhân loại bớt si mê lầm lạc, thấy được đâu là giá trị thật, đâu là phỉnh phờ, giả dối. 
 
- Ðạo Phật, nhờ tinh thần Bình Ðẳng tuyệt đối, san bằng được những bất công của xã hội, nhân loại, và làm cho cảnh giới Ta Bà này được sáng sủa, an vui hơn. 
Ðó là những lợi ích mà Ðạo Phật đem lại cho cõi đời.

Những lợi ích nói trên quý báu như thế, nhưng sẽ không bao giờ đến với chúng ta, nếu không học và hành theo Phật.

Vậy chúng ta muốn trở thành một Phật tử chân chính thì trước tiên là phải học hỏi như Phật. Chúng ta không chỉ học trong giáo lý của Ngài mà còn học qua đời sống, đức hạnh, hành vi của đời Ngài nữa. 
 
2. Hành theo Phật: Nhưng học mà không tập, không hành, thì chẳng khác gì cái đãy đựng sách, chữ nghĩa kinh sách chất chứa thật nhiều, mà chẳng có ích lợi gì cả. Vậy nên học phải đi đôi với hành. Chúng ta phải cố gắng thực hành cho được những điều đã học, làm cho được những điều mình thấy là hay là phải. Phật đã làm gì, chúng ta phải tập làm lại; Phật đã có những đức tánh Từ, Bi, Hỷ, Xả, Hoan Hỷ, Tinh Tấn, Thanh Tịnh...chúng ta cũng cố gắng thực hiện cho được những đức tánh ấy.
