When Prince Siddhattha was sixteen (16) years old, King Suddhodana passed the throne to the Crown Prince. During the coronation ceremony of Crown Prince Siddhattha and the wedding ceremony with Princess Yasodharā [1] , King Siddhattha ordained Princess Yasodharā to the throne of Chief Queen-Empress. King Bodhisattva Siddhattha ruled the country was peaceful and prosperous, the people of the world lived happily. The Supreme King Suddhodana wanted King Siddhattha to become a Wheel-turning-Royal King, and did not want King Siddhattha Bodhisattva to go forth from the home life to become a fully-enlightened Buddha. Therefore, His Majesty the Emperor ordered the soldiers not to let King Siddhattha see the old, the sick, the dead, and the monastic. King Bodhisattva Siddhattha ascended to the throne enjoys peace on the throne for 12 years, has never seen a scene to generate excitement (saṃvega). The reason why the Bodhisattva-Bodhisattva went forth Events occurred in chronological order, causing King Bodhisattva to decide to go forth. * For the first time, on the full moon day of June, King Bodhisattva Siddhattha went to visit the royal garden. On the way, this time the Bodhisatta King saw a sick person, also transformed by the gods to make the Bodhisattva King generate arousing mind (saṃvega). As before, the Bodhisattva-King reflected: “Surely I have the same illness, it is inevitable.” In a sad mood, the Bodhisatta King ordered the officer to drive the chariot to bring the King back to the palace. * The third time, 4 months later, on the full moon day of February, to ease sadness, the Bodhisatta King again went to visit the royal garden. On the way, the Bodhisatta King suddenly saw a dead person, also transformed by the gods to make the Bodhisattva King generate arousing mind (saṃvega). As on the previous two occasions, the Bodhisattva-King reflected: “Surely I have such a death, death is inevitable.” Fear arose in his heart, and the Bodhisatta ordered the charioteer to bring the King back to the palace. Since then, the Bodhisatta King has always thought about aging, sickness, and death. The Bodhisattva King wondered if there was any way to be freed from old age, sickness, and death? The reason there is aging, sickness, and death is because there is rebirth. "Oh! What a terrifying rebirth!” * For the fourth time, 4 months later, on the full moon day of June, to relieve the sadness and fear in his heart, once again, the Bodhisatta King went to visit the royal garden. On the way, the Bodhisatta King saw a monastic person sitting under a tree, showing a calm and peaceful expression, also transformed by gods to make the Bodhisattva King think about ordained. Indeed, when the Bodhisattva-King saw the renunciation, he immediately let go of all the heavy worries in his heart about old age, sickness, and death. The Bodhisatta King decided to leave home that very night, in order to find the way to liberation from rebirth, which is to be freed from the sufferings of old age, sickness, and death. That day, the Bodhisatta felt extremely happy, so the Bodhisatta continued to visit the royal garden. When the Bodhisattva King returned to the palace, on that very night the Bodhisattva King heard that Queen Yasodharā had given birth to a prince, and love for a child arose in his heart, King Bodhisattva lament that: “The Great Binding!” Therefore, the Prince was named "Rāhula". Even so, the Bodhisattva King's will to leave home remained unchanged. That night, the Bodhisatta King went to see Channa, the trusted horse-keeper, and told him: - Hey Channa! Tonight, I will leave the palace, go to ordination, please prepare me the horse Kaṇḍaka right now, and remember not to let anyone know. Thus, King Bodhisattva Siddhattha ascended the throne, reigning the country for 13 years. [1] Princess Yasodharā of King Suppabuddha and Chief Queen Amitādevī of Devadaha.
