FIBER AND BUTTER One day, a young man crying came to see the Buddha. Buddha asked: "Hey kid, what's going on?" - Venerable Buddha, your father died yesterday. – What else can be done? If he's dead, crying won't bring him back to life. - Venerable Lord, I understand that, I come to ask you to help my father. - This! What can I do for your father? - Venerable Buddha, please help. He is a powerful man, surely he can help my father. See, the priests, the shamans used to perform rituals to help the deceased. And as soon as the ceremonies are performed down here, the heavens are opened up there, and the dead can enter because they have an entry permit. You are a powerful person, if you help, your father and son will not only get an entry permit, but also a permanent residence and a green card! Please help my father! This poor fellow was already in so much pain that it was useless to reason with him. The Buddha had to use another way to help him understand. He said to him, "Okay, go to the market and buy two clay pots." The young man was very happy, thinking that the Buddha was willing to perform the ceremony for his father. He ran to the market and bought two clay pots. The Buddha said, "Okay, fill one pot with butter, and the other pot with gravel." The young man did as he said. “Now close the lids on the pots and seal them tight and drop them in the pond over there.” The young man did as he was told, and the two pots sank to the bottom of the pond. The Buddha said, "Now take a big stick and break those two pots." The young man rejoiced, thinking that the Buddha was performing a miraculous ceremony for his father. According to Indian custom, when a person dies, the son takes the body to the crematorium for cremation. When the body was half burned, the son took a stick and broke the dead man's skull. According to ancient belief, when the skull is broken below the ceiling, the heavens above are opened. So the young man thought to himself, "Yesterday, my father's body was cremated, so now the Buddha wants me to symbolically break these two pots." He was very happy with that ceremony. As the Buddha said, he hit it with a stick and the two pots were broken. Immediately the butter in one pot escaped and floated on the surface of the water, the gravel in the other pot fell out and sank. The Buddha said: "My son, I have finished. Now call the shamans and miracle workers, tell them to chant and pray: “Rise up, Gravel! Butter, sink, sink! Let's see how it goes." “Venerable One, you must be joking. How is that possible? Gravel is heavier than water, must sink, how to float! This is the law of nature. Butter is lighter than water, has to float, how can it sink to the bottom, sir. This is the law of nature!” “My son, you know quite a lot about the laws of nature, but you still do not understand this law of nature: If all your life your father sows bad deeds as heavy as rocks and must go down, who can pull him up? And if your actions are light as butter, you will go up, who can pull you down?"
