Cultivation is like a log floating in the river.VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.
The path of practice was likened by the World-Honored One to a log floating in a river, down to the Nirvana sea. Floating and sinking in that immense journey, some logs reach the sea, but many logs do not.
Cultivators are the same, only the log is different from not giving up, but constantly trying to reflect to remove and overcome obstacles and go down to the liberation of Nirvana.
“Once upon a time the Buddha was at Abisha, by the Ganges River. At that time, a monk approached the Buddha, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:
– Good luck! World-Honored One, please preach the Dharma for me. After listening to the Dharma, I was alone in a secluded place, dedicated to thinking, living without distraction and understanding the reasons for the lineage houses, shaved off my hair and beard, left home with good faith, left home to study the Way, did not have a home, and went on to become a monk. The holy life, seeing the dharma, knowingly self-certifies: 'I, the birth has ended, the holy life has been established, the things to be done have been done, I know for myself that there is no more rebirth in the next life'.
At that time, the World-Honored One, looking at the Ganges, saw in the water a large tree drifting down the stream, and said to the other monk:
- Do you see the big tree in this Ganges water?
- Blessed One, I have seen.
Buddha said:
- This big tree does not get caught on this side, does not get in the other side, does not sink to the bottom, does not get caught in the island, does not enter the whirlpool, is not picked up by people, does not hold back, does not rot. , will go down the stream, flow with the current, pour into the big sea, right?
The bhikkhu said to the Buddha:
- Bach World-honored, that's right.
Buddha said:
- The same goes for the bhikkhus. Not entangled in this shore, not entangled in the other shore, not sunk, not entangled in an islet, not caught in a whirlpool, nor picked up by others, not held by non-humans, nor rotten, he will follow. water that flows down, pours back, pours to Nirvana.
The bhikkhu said to the Buddha:
"World-Honored One, what is this shore?" What is the other shore? What is sinking? What is being stuck on an island? What is a whirlpool? What is the person who took it? What is non-human hold? What is decay? Good thing, World-Honored One, for I preach widely! After listening, I will be alone in a secluded place, dedicated to thinking, living without letting go, ... until I know I will not be reborn in the next life anymore.
The Buddha told the bhikkhus:
- This shore is the six sense-bases. The other shore is the six foreign origin. Being picked up by someone is like someone close to a lay person, or to a monastic; If they encounter happiness, suffering, sadness, happiness and their deeds, they will all join the community. That's called being picked up. Being held back by non-humans is like someone vowing to practice holy life, saying: 'Now I uphold the precepts, ascetic, and practice the holy virtues in order to be reborn in the heavens'. That's called being held by a non-human. Being hit by a whirlpool is like someone completely regressing. Debauchery is transgressing precepts, practicing unwholesome dharmas, corrupting, uneducated, like weeds, like the sound of a horn blowing. They are not samanas but like samanas; they are not virtuous, but similar to chastity.
Thus, Bhikkhu-stilts, that is called not entangled in this shore, the other shore, ... Nirvana.
After the other monk heard what the Buddha said, he happily performed the ceremony to leave. At this time, alone in a deserted place, thinking about the Buddha's words taught in the Sutra The big tree drifts with the water,... until I know that I will not be reborn in the next life anymore and attain Arahantship."
In the scriptures, there is no explanation of the meaning of "sink" and "caught on the island". However, related to the equivalent sutra in the Sangha of A-ham (volume 3), "sink" is to sink deeply into craving, "to get stuck on an island" is to get stuck in the five desires of money, money, and beauty. , fame, food and sleep.
The log could not float to the sea because of attachment and encountered many obstacles. Likewise, if a cultivator does not overcome the obstacles as taught by the Buddha above, it will be difficult to attain liberation, Nirvana.END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).WORLD VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST ORDER=BUDDHIST DHARMA WHEEL GOLDEN MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.6/2/2022.
