Giving Alms Without Attachment to Appearances, The Merits Are As Many as the Ten Directions of Space. The Buddha asked: "Subhuti! Can the space in the East be thought of?". Subhuti replied: "World Honored One! It cannot be thought of." The Buddha continued to ask: "Can the space in the West, South, North, above, below, and the four corners be thought of?" Subhuti replied: "World Honored One! It cannot be thought of." The Buddha taught: "Subhuti! Bodhisattvas who give alms without attachment to appearances will gain blessings as numerous as the ten directions of space, meaning they are so numerous that they cannot be thought of." The Buddha used the ten directions of space to exemplify the blessings of those who give alms without attachment to appearances. The Buddha taught that Bodhisattvas who give alms without attachment to appearances, or in other words, who practice almsgiving in accordance with Prajna wisdom, will gain pure, immaculate blessings as numerous as the ten directions of space, without end. What are impure, impure blessings that have an end? And what are pure, immaculate blessings that have no end? There were two poor families, both in the same situation, both had an accident in their house. Both went to two wealthy families to borrow money. One wealthy family had a greedy and profiteering heart, so when they offered the money, they demanded interest. The second wealthy family had a compassionate heart, and felt sorry for the poor who had met with the accident, so they lent it for free, without thinking of gratitude or interest. On time, both families who had the accident returned the money to the two wealthy families. The wealthy family was greedy, and received the interest, but it was gone in a few days. So the two sides no longer had any benefit for each other. The second wealthy family, because of his benevolent heart, helped people without seeking fame or profit, so the poor family remembered him with gratitude and respect forever. When the country was invaded, both wealthy families evacuated. The greedy family could not find anyone to help them; they even asked their brother to borrow money from them before, but he could not. This is an example of the end of the defiled blessings (using new greed to make blessings). On the contrary, the family of the benevolent person, who has received favors from the poor in the past, voluntarily sacrifices to help them forever without counting the cost. This is an example of the endless pure and immaculate blessings (using a compassionate heart to do good deeds). In short, if the practitioner uses a defiled mind (greed, anger, ignorance, etc.) to do Buddhist work, he will only enjoy the impure and impure blessings of humans and gods, which will have an end. On the contrary, if the practitioner uses a pure mind (compassion, wisdom, not seeking fame and profit, etc.) to do Buddhist work, he will enjoy the endless pure and immaculate blessings of the Buddha. Giving Dharma. In the 'Flower Adornment Sutra Commentary', there is a lecture on Extensive Offerings - Offering material things is not as good as offering Dharma. In the sutra, there is an extremely interesting exposition by the layman Vimalakirti, in which the most important thing is that true giving of Dharma is not like what we do nowadays, giving a few sutras, giving a few tapes of [Dharma lectures] and calling it giving of Dharma, this is too small a matter. The layman Vimalakirti said: 'Dharma giving is using the body as a model, practicing according to the Dharma, setting a good example for all living beings, that is true giving of Dharma'. This exposition teaches us a very good point, that is how we can attain the true benefits of the Buddha Dharma. For example, if we truly give material things, give Dharma, and give fearlessness, cultivating these three causes, we will receive three results - wealth, intelligence, wisdom, health and longevity. Let all sentient beings see, let them see these results and ask you: 'How did you get such great benefits?', then you tell them that [to get such results] you must cultivate these three causes. Therefore, you must definitely let others see. When keeping precepts, you must wholeheartedly keep the precepts, cut off all evil karma, and make the bottom of your heart truly attain purity and goodness. As for patience, diligence, meditation, and Prajna, you must truly do them, that is giving the Dharma. If you cannot do them and tell others or advise them, it will have no effect at all, and people may not believe you. In the sutras, the Buddha said: 'Sentient beings fear the results, Bodhisattvas fear the causes'. When sentient beings see the results, they will reflect. When they see good results, they will admire them, when they see bad results, they will be afraid. Therefore, we must do our best, bring the results before everyone, let them observe, reflect, then develop the mind to learn, only then is it truly the Dharma of giving.END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).GOLDEN ZEN BUDDHIST MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THICH CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.4/7/2024.VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=THICH CHAN TANH.
What is the Use of Monks and Nuns Doing Buddhist Work? Monks and Nuns are people who practice Buddhism, they are also people who propagate Buddhism, they are professional practitioners, they are also professional Dharma propagators. Monks and Nuns doing Buddhist work have merit for people, and they also have simple virtues. Buddhists provide for the needs of life for Monks and Nuns, making them feel secure to do Buddhist work, and Buddhists also have indirect merit. Therefore, the Buddha said that Monks and Nuns are the fields of merit and virtue for everyone. In the past, the duty of Monks and Nuns was not to specifically do the work of liberating the dead. It can even be said that the main object of the Monks and Nuns to liberate is the living, not the dead. However, Buddhist practitioners value the practice of reciting Buddha's name to help people at the time of death.END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).GOLDEN ZEN BUDDHIST MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN= THICH CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.4/7/2024.VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=THICH CHAN TANH.
Oral Karma. In the Mahayana sutras, the Buddha said that the three karmas are all about body, speech, and mind, but in this sutra, the Buddha said that it is mouth, body, and mind. Putting oral karma first has a special meaning. Why? Because oral karma is very easy to commit. Therefore, there are four oral karma, while there are only three physical karma, and there are also three mental karma, but there are four oral karma. Because oral karma is very easy to commit, those who study Buddhism, those who recite Buddha's name, all the merits of reciting come from their mouths, but if they still cannot be tolerant, cannot be patient, and like to criticize, then even if they recite Buddha's name for their entire life, they still cannot be reborn. We recite Buddha's name on one hand, but the other hand is lost, because we create oral karma. Therefore, the Buddha put oral karma first, to especially admonish those who recite Buddha's name, because this is a special quick path, a quick path to Buddhahood. Of the ten good deeds, this is more important than anything else. “Be skillful in guarding your mouth, do not speak ill of others,” which means not lying, not speaking two-facedly, not exaggerating, not speaking harshly, you must keep that. Why can you create karma? Of course, mental karma is the master, when you have an unwholesome thought, the mental karma is greed, anger, ignorance, selfishness, and self-interest. When the five poisons of greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance, and doubt are complete, it is very easy to have an unwholesome thought, very naturally all are thoughts of harming others and benefiting yourself, then it is a failure, then you create karma of the three evil paths. You yourself do not know, so you intentionally or unintentionally create it every day, do not accumulate merit, the time to recite Buddha’s name is short, the time to create karma is long, the strength to recite Buddha’s name is weak, the power to create evil is strong, so how can you leave the three evil paths? The words you say are a bit harsh, how can you leave hell? You are all creating hellish karma. Do you understand the sutras? No, why? The variable of listening is not enough. Why is it not enough? It is because we use a scattered mind to listen, use a scattered mind to recite Buddha's name, so listening to sutras and reciting Buddha's name are not effective. Enemies and creditors come to take revenge, they do not let you be comfortable, both body and mind suffer. The body is sick, the mind is troubled, worried, frustrated, the body and mind are not at peace. All are enemies and creditors coming, without enemies and creditors, how could this happen? These small things often happen in daily life, it seems like we can't escape them every day. We don't find the cause, think that our body is not well, find a doctor to check, no problem, very normal, find a psychologist is also not a problem. If you don't study Buddhism, you won't understand, when you study Buddhism then you will understand. In the dojo, in the lecture hall, in the Buddha Recitation Hall, we see how many people reciting Buddha's name, listening to sutras, their spirits are down and not excited, how do we see them? Tired, showing that they are very miserable, they are not comfortable, their spirit is not upbeat, they are all creditors. We understand the truth, observe in daily life, you will find the answer, those who have many creditors, they live very tired, very miserable lives; those who have fewer creditors, they will be very light, very active, cannot be mistaken. Creating karma of slander", this is towards yourself, not towards others. You yourself often have karma of mouth, that is, sowing seeds of slandering others, or others slander you. The result of karma, you have to bear it yourself, it does not come naturally. After death, you fall into hell", hell here, is what was told to you in the previous section, Tongue-cutting hell. Think of the suffering of hell, think of the suffering of tongue-cutting, do not create karma of mouth anymore.END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).GOLDEN ZEN BUDDHIST MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THICH CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.4/7/2024.VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=THICH CHAN TANH.
