Kalama Sutta - To Kalama her

I heard that on one occasion the Blessed, while doing a tour through Kosalani, together with a large group of monks reached Kesaputta, a city of Kalama own people. They heard it said, "Gotama the contemplative - the son Sakyans, having left the Sakya clan - reached Kesaputta. And about Master Gotama this fine reputation has spread: 'He is truly blessed, worthy and fair self-awakened, consummate in knowledge and conduct, come on, a connoisseur of the universe, a professor unsurpassed for those ready to be taught The teacher of human beings and divine awake, blessed. He made known - his creation through direct knowledge - this world with her one deva, mara and Brahma, with its generations of priests and contemplatives, with its leaders and ordinary people; He explained the Dhamma admirable in the beginning, admirable in the middle, admirable in the end; exposed the essence of the holy life and its peculiarities, stark perfect matchless pure. It is good to see someone so deserving. ' "
Thus, Kalama-SII in Kesaputta went to the Blessed One. When they got there, some of them were leaning and they stand together.Others have exchanged courteous greetings with him and, after an exchange of friendly greetings and courtesies, sat to one side. Some of them were sitting with him after he greeted him with the palms glued and put in his heart. Others were seated after announced their names and clan. Some of them just sat in silence.
As everyone stood there, Kalama-SII in Kesaputta and addressed the Blessed One, "Lord, there are some priests and contemplatives who come Kesaputta. They expound and glorify their own doctrines, but the doctrines of others criticize them, slander them, show contempt for them, discredit them. Then other priests and contemplatives come Kesaputta. They expound and glorify their own doctrines, but the doctrines of others criticize them, slander them, show contempt for them, discredit them. They leave us absolutely uncertain and in doubt: Which of these venerable priests & contemplatives tell the truth and who is lying? "
"Of course you are uncertain, and Kalama! Of course that doubt. When there are reasons for doubt, uncertainty arises. So in this case, Kalama and not go by words, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical, after inference, by analogies, after seeing published by weighing views after probability or after thought: "This contemplative is our teacher. " Only when you know by yourself by knowing own that "These qualities are bad, these qualities are to blame, these qualities are criticized by the wise, these qualities when they are tested and performed lead to harm and suffering" - then it have to abandon them. "
"What do you think, and Kalama? When greed arises in a person, does it arise for welfare or for harm? "
"For harm, lord."
"And this greedy person, overcome by greed, his mind possessed by greed, kills living beings, takes what is not given, goes after another person's wife, tells lies, and induces others to do likewise, all of resulting in long-term harm and suffering. "
"Yes, God."
"Now, what you think, and Kalama? When aversion arises in a person, does it arise for welfare or for harm? "
"For personal Lord"
"And this person full of hatred, overcome by aversion, his mind possessed by aversion, kills living beings, takes what is not given, goes after another person's wife, tells lies, and induces others to do the same, all of which is for long-term harm and suffering. "
"Yes, God."
"Now, what you think, and Kalama? When delusion arises in a person, does it arise for welfare or for harm? "
"For harm, lord."
"And this deluded person, overcome by delusion, his mind possessed by delusion, kills living beings, takes what is not given, goes after another person's wife, tells lies, and induces others to do likewise, all of resulting in long-term harm and suffering. "
"Yes, God."
"So what do you think, and Kalama? These qualities are good or bad? "
"Relay, Lord."
"Are they to blame or not?"
"The blame, Lord"
"Criticized by the wise or praised by the wise?"
"Criticized by the wise, God."
"Where are tried and executed, they lead to harm and suffering, or not?"
"When are tried and executed, they lead to harm and suffering. Such is our view. "
"So, as I said, Kalama and: do not go by words, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical, after inference, by analogies, after seeing published by weighing views after probability or after thought: "This contemplative is our teacher." Only when you know by yourself by knowing own that "These qualities are bad, these qualities are to blame, these qualities are criticized by the wise, these qualities when they are tested and performed lead to harm and suffering" - then it have to abandon them. Thus he was told. And about these things it was said. "
"Now, Kalama and not go by words, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical, after inference, by analogies, after seeing published by weighing views after probability or after thought, 'This contemplative is teacher our". Only when you know by yourself by knowing own that "These qualities are good, these qualities can not be blamed, these qualities are praised by the wise, these qualities when they are tested and performed lead to benefit and happiness' - then you should practice and get hold of these qualities. "
"What do you think, and Kalama? When lack of greed arises in a person, does it arise for welfare or for harm? "
"For welfare, Lord!"
"And this person who is not greedy, not overwhelmed by greed that does not mind possessed by greed, does not kill living beings, take what is not given, it goes after another person's wife, do not tell lies, nor not make others likewise, all of which is for long-term welfare and happiness. "
"Yes, God"
"What do you think, and Kalama? When lack of aversion arises in a person, does it arise for welfare or for harm? "
"For welfare, lord."
"And this person lacks aversion, not overcome by aversion, which has no mind possessed by aversion, does not kill living beings, take what is not given, it goes after another person's wife, do not tell lies, nor -i make others likewise, all of which is for long-term welfare and happiness. "
"Yes, God."
"What do you think, and Kalama? When lack of delusion arises in a person, does it arise for welfare or for harm? "
"For welfare, lord."
"And this person devoid of delusion, which is not overwhelmed by the illusion that does not mind possessed by delusion, does not kill living beings, take what is not given, it goes after another person's wife, do not tell lies, nor -i make others likewise, all of which is for long-term welfare and happiness. "
"Yes, God."
"So what do you think, and Kalama? These qualities are good or bad? "
"Good Lord."
"Are they to blame or not?"
"I can not be blamed God"
"Criticized by the wise or praised by the wise?"
"Praised by the wise, God."
"Where are tried and executed, they lead to harm and suffering, or not?"
"When are tried and executed, they lead to benefit and happiness. Such is our view. "
"So, as I said, Kalama and: do not go by words, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical, after inference, by analogies, after seeing published by weighing views after probability or after thought: "This contemplative is our teacher." Only when you know by yourself by knowing own that "These qualities are good, these qualities can not be blamed, these qualities are praised by the wise, these qualities when they are tested and performed lead to benefit and happiness' - then you should practice and get hold of these qualities. Thus he was told. And about these things it was said. "
"Now, Kalama and someone who is noble disciple - thus devoid of greed, devoid of ill will, neamăgit, thoughtful and resolute - keeps pervading the first direction [east], as in the second, third and fourth direction with an awareness imbued with good will. Thus he keeps pervading above, below, around, everywhere and in all aspects encompassing universe with an awareness imbued with good will: abundant, expansive, immeasurable, free from hostility, free from ill will. "
"He keeps pervading the first direction [east], as well as into the second, third and fourth direction with an awareness imbued with compassion. Thus he keeps pervading above, below, around, everywhere and in all aspects encompassing universe with an awareness imbued with compassion: abundant, expansive, immeasurable, free from hostility, free from ill will. "
"He keeps pervading the first direction [east], as well as into the second, third and fourth direction with an awareness imbued with appreciation. Thus he keeps pervading above, below, around, everywhere and in all aspects encompassing universe with an awareness imbued with appreciation: abundant, expansive, immeasurable, free from hostility, free from ill will. "
"He keeps pervading the first direction [east], as well as into the second, third and fourth direction with an awareness imbued with calm. Thus he keeps pervading above, below, around, everywhere and in all aspects encompassing universe with an awareness imbued with calm: abundant, expansive, immeasurable, free from hostility, free from ill will. "
"Now, Kalama and someone who is noble disciple - his mind thus free from hostility, free from ill will, uncontaminated and pure - acquires four assurances in the here and now:
"If there is a world after death, if there is a fruit of the action taken correct or incorrect, then this is the basis that, with the collapse of the body, after death, will appear in a good destination, a heavenly world." This is the first faith that acquires.
"But if there is a world after death, if there is a fruit of the action right or wrong done, then right here in the present life, my existence is a pleasant one - free from hostility, free from ill will, free of problems and troubles» . This is the second conviction that acquires.
"If evil is done through acting, I did not even want evil to anyone. By doing no evil action, from where I could reach suffering? "This is the third conviction that acquires.
"If any harm is done by action, then I can consider pure in both cases." This is the fourth conviction that acquires.
Someone who is noble disciple - his mind thus free from hostility, free from ill will, uncontaminated and pure - acquires these four assurances in the here and now. "
"So it is, O Blessed One. That is, O, The Far Reaching. Someone who is noble disciple - his mind thus free from hostility, free from ill will, uncontaminated and pure - acquires four assurances in the here and now:
"Magnificent, lord! Magnificent! Just as someone would turn an overturned, would show what was hidden, as he would find the way to one who was lost, or how it takes a lamp in the dark so that those with eyes could see forms, so the Blessed - through many lines of reasoning - made the Dhamma to be clear. Go to the Blessed One for refuge, to the Dhamma and to the Sangha, the community of monks. May the Blessed One remember us as lay followers who have gone to him for refuge, starting from this day forward, for life.
