Why Should We Cultivate? VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.
There is a view that death is the end and there is also a view that humans last forever from one life to another. This is a dualistic view. If death is the end, then human perception falls into stubborn wrong views and people themselves live in spite of everything. Because whatever you do, good or bad has no meaning after death. This wrong view leads people to cruel actions, mutual destruction, war, hatred and death. This is called annihilation theory. On the contrary, it is also a wrong view to think that the human soul exists forever. Called common sense, or common opinion. If death is the end, what do we practice for? Because doing good, cultivating benevolence, giving up evil and doing good, and cultivating roots of merit are meaningless. And if life lasts forever, people are dependent, slow, stagnant.
The middle path discovered by the Buddha eschews the two extremes of permanence and cessation. People and things are all dependent on birth. Because of this, there is that, because of the birth of this, that is born, because of the cessation of this, the other ceases. According to Buddhism, after death, people continue to be reincarnated in the cycle of birth and death. Depending on karma, that is, depending on the good or bad karma that we have created to receive good or bad results in the next life. After taking the last breath, the body of the four elements disintegrated, the mind was released and reincarnated. That mind is called the "rebirth consciousness" or " rebirth consciousness " , carrying the totality of karma in it to receive a good or bad result depending on whether good or bad karma is planted. Karma follows me like a shadow that doesn't leave the picture . “I am the heir to karma, karma is the relative, the womb from which a person is reborn.”Thus, death is not the end. Therefore, we need to cultivate our three karmas to be pure in order to be at peace in the present life and receive the happy retribution in the future. Therefore, the doctrine of cause and effect, karma in Buddhism introduced to warn people to be careful with their words, actions and thoughts. Practice the three karmas for purity. Tu is simply to correct, bad to good, bad to be beautiful, evil to change to good...
The Buddha taught that there are two levels of practice, that is, practice at home and practice at home. Tu monastic life is the sand of love from the body, ordained to propagate Buddhism. The monastic, leaving home to live without family, vows to follow the Buddha's teachings for the rest of his life to attain peace and freedom from birth and death. In addition, as in the context of the book, Mr. Quy Son taught: "Incapable of maintaining the state and ruling the state, inheriting an inheritance, burying an ancestor, a master of the world, a mind that needs to be remembered inside, and a virtue that cannot be avoided abroad. , escape from the world, sign the period of ordination".That is, monastics do not participate in the leadership of the country, do not inherit the inheritance left by their parents, leave their homeland, shave off their hair and beard, seek a teacher to learn the Way, and are always mindful and aware inside. strictly study the scriptures, avoid evil deeds outside, stay away from life, want to leave home, and propagate the Buddhadharma.
This spirit is clearly expressed in the recitation of the ordination ceremony, that is, the official shaving ceremony of ordination:
"Goodness in the great man,
The ability to be so impermanent,
Ne-huan animal customs,
Contemplative merit,
Cancel the weather figure,
The love from the property,
Leaving home to propagate Buddhism,
The worst in the world.”
Translation:
“Blessed is the man,
Understanding life is impermanent,
Abandoning the practice of Nirvana,
Virtue is inconceivable,
Kindness from relatives,
Leaving home to propagate Buddhism,
Swear to all sentient beings."
In the Fourty-two chapters of the sutra, they teach spiritual practice: Cultivation as a cultivator, practice of behavior improvement, good practice in society, separation of followers of the false religion, reverence and reverence, and the theory of peace. Italian non-greed, hate, delusion; body does not kill adultery, speech is not two-pronged, bad speech is bad, speechless is unscrupulous, unscrupulous, unholy, and virtuous in cultivation. ( we practice is to correct our actions, to abandon evil for good, to leave life to follow the Way, to walk, sit and lie down in a proper posture, to speak with harmony and love. The mind is free from greed, anger, and delusion; the mouth is free from greed. not speaking double-tongued, not speaking evil words, not speaking contrary to the truth, not speaking falsely, not drinking alcohol and intoxicating substances, that is called spiritual practice.)
First of all, let's try to ask the question why did the Buddha go to practice? While he was a crown prince, the wish of his father, King Tinh San, was to succeed in the future and maintain the country. He lived in a golden palace, a beautiful wife and children. But in his mind he was always thinking about human life. After he went out to the four gates of the city and saw four scenes of old age, sickness and death, he panicked and asked Sa Na, why are they like this? Then he met a monk with a majestic appearance, free from worldliness, from which he burned in his wish to leave home to seek the truth. King Tinh San strictly forbade his ordination, by building four palaces according to the four seasons, spring, summer, autumn, winter and marrying the princess Gia Du Da and then giving birth to a son named La Hau La. Such thoughts can bind him. But even that did not make him passionately enjoy the pleasures of life.
When King Tinh San's father forbade the crown prince from leaving home, he immediately asked his father four questions, which are: How can children stay young forever? How can I keep my child healthy and not sick? How can I live forever and never die? How can sentient beings end their suffering? King Tinh San could not answer one of those four questions. So on the night of February 8, he crossed the city to become a monk, seeking the truth of liberation. After three times of searching for teachers to study the Way and after six years of asceticism in the jungle, finally after forty-nine days and nights of meditating under the Bodhi tree, the Buddha attained the supreme enlightenment of Bodhi and became a Buddha called Shakyamuni. Since then, the Buddha enlightened the path of awakening to teach sentient beings to wake up from the long dream of birth and death, to be happy and liberated.
Many people believe that going to a monk is boring, heartbroken, and desperate. The story of Lan and Diep and the stories passed on in folklore about the pessimistic pessimism of the cultivators was the result of the decline of Buddhism under the French colonial period. At this time Christianity prevailed, because of the protection of the French colonialists. There are no official monastics in the temple, all of them are from the temple keeper. A dimmed, waning face of Buddhism hence negative images are ascribed to Buddhism.
Regarding the view that going to the monkhood is pessimistic, a girl came to ask the Master:
Teacher, why do you go to monkhood?
What's the use of sauerkraut and pickles?
Why are young men boring?
Come back and dream with me!
The teacher replied:
Build a dream with me for what?
Death, what is the use of a wife?
Life is miserable, teachers don't need it
The path of the Buddha country decided to go.
Hearing about the structure of yang chi
What is the use of virtual world?
The beauty of artificial tuong frivolous
Advise people to wake up from the dream.
The Way of the Two-Self-Remembering Life
Well, don't look forward to any regrets
Unlucky has not had a relationship
The flower path people walk, the teacher walks.
I'm here to practice to escape
Soy sauce, Pickles, nourishing nature
What's boring about the youth of boys?
Well, don't hold back to let the teacher go.
This is a funny poem, but reflects the profound content that is to realize that life is temporary, monasticism is the true and noblest value. Questions about interrogating monastics have been around for a long time. In Mau Tu Ly Or Luan of Mr. Mau Bo mentioned many problems of the world for the monastic. For example, in the story of filial piety, Confucianists believe that "unfilial piety is three, no end is great." Of the three unfilial things, having no children to inherit, worshiping is the biggest unfilial sin! According to Buddhism, the purpose of filial piety is to connect and transmit love, directing people to inner peace, and finding true happiness in life. Mainly to apply filial piety by attitude and action towards parents and relatives to benefit. The monastic practice, shaving off hair and beard,
Confucius said: "Body, skin, hair, received from parents, must not be destroyed, is the beginning of filial piety." This sentence means that following filial piety comes from loving and appreciating one's body. Because my body is born of my parents. If the body is harmed, it will hurt the parents. Thus, a monk who shaves off his hair and beard is unfilial.
With the wisdom of Buddhism, human life is full of suffering, but the greatest suffering is samsara. Therefore, a true monk can guide his parents and dependents to understand the truth and practice to be liberated from samsara. This is a big deal, for "shaving hair" it's just the details. Shave off hair and beard means to stop afflictions, other worldly shapes to remind you to concentrate on studying. When the first knife is shaved, it "shall make an end of all evil", the second knife "shall practice all good deeds", the third knife "swore to save all sentient beings". Thus, shaving the hair of Buddhist monks is not a matter of affirming that they are filial or unfilial. In an anthology of poems by Monk The Quan, the venerable nun of Hue Buddhism has a very cute poem about shaving her hair:
"Look in the mirror and see a bald head"
Laughing and crying at the same time
It's a pity that I'm afraid of hair
Stop and study."
The Buddhist view of filial piety not only emphasizes on the aspect of material service but also the aspect of spiritual experimentation to practice liberation. There is not a person who becomes a Buddha and becomes a saint without being filial. Therefore, filial piety is the source of all good deeds. Humans not only perfect their personality, but also know how to respect grandparents, parents, brothers and sisters, get along with everyone in society, and constantly make efforts to actively contribute to the country, the world, and the religion. It was Mau Tu, who assimilated Buddhist teachings in the 2nd century, once said in his work Ly or Comment when he answered Confucian intellectuals about the right path of Buddhism which is Hieu: At home, he is filial to his parents, when he goes out in society, he saves the world, when he is alone, he cultivates himself.
There are Buddhists in the US telling their spiritual story: Long time no see at parties, dancing, singing, friends asking where to go but absent for so long? That Buddhist replied: "Going to the temple, now I'm a monk!". Hearing such a reply, friends were disappointed and cried out, "What is a life of three thousand six thousand days, why are you doing such a successful business but you have to give up and worry about it?". A few people at the banquet table began to turn to the topic of "Teaching and Buddhism". People say they are young now to enjoy the rest of their lives first, when they're old, let's practice. Some people think that life is a struggle, and practice is a cynical pessimism. Some people feel sorry for the cultivators, if they live in America with a lot of meat and fish, they can't eat for their own pleasure, but are vegetarians. In their next life, if they are born in India or Africa, they won't have meat and fish to eat, they will regret it! In the past, if I heard someone say something against my will, insulting my religion, I would jump into arguments, eloquence, Arguing, right and wrong is better than losing, sometimes when I get angry, I say I lose friends because of trivial things. Now, thanks to going to the temple and studying the scriptures, I do not react immediately, but calmly observe people discussing. I see everyone has their own right, anyone who disagrees with me is stupid, doesn't understand the problem... Seeing a few friends discussing the sublime philosophy of Buddhism, I think of people blind to see elephants
Not only those who don't go to the temple, so they don't understand the religion, but even those who go to the temple regularly also understand the wrong religion. Most of the people who go to the temple are old people, many people come to the temple holding incense and bowing to the four directions, very flexible and skillful. But they go to the temple wanting nothing more than to "be blessed in this life and the next". In this life, God and Buddha bless you to have a peaceful life, your children will be educated, and your family will be happy and peaceful. In the next life, to be born in heaven, or to become a human, to be born into a better family...
Buddhism is a path to liberation and enlightenment. Buddha is the one who found the truth, found the way to liberation, peace, and freedom (end of suffering). The path that Buddha explained, drawing only on the "Enlightenment" experience that he experienced after six years of ascetic practice and 49 days of contemplation under the Bodhi tree. After this period of practice, the Buddha was a fully enlightened one, reached Nirvana, and the Buddha equally declared, "I am a fulfilled Buddha. teach".
Therefore, one must not only bow and beg but understand the teachings to apply to the present life so that it is peaceful. Tu is to fix. To correct for the better, is to stop, to transform the false knowledge of reality. Because of wrong knowledge, we generate greed, hatred, and delusion and then act to create karma. Having the right opinion, we will change our attitude to everything, so that the world becomes more peaceful, joyful, and happier.
When our mind is no longer controlled by greed, hatred, and delusion, when our mind is no longer attached to feelings of attachment and self, we will reach Nirvana. It is a state of ultimate peace, purity, freedom, liberation in this life, whereby karma ends, no longer able to attract us to reincarnation in the six paths in the next life. Therefore, those who are determined to practice, consider birth and death the great, ton hair is impermanent, everyone should practice diligently, like saving fire on the head, need to be careful not to let go.
Once upon a time, the millionaire son, An Loneliness, was initially lured by his father to listen to the Buddha's sermon about his father giving money. Hungry for money, the prince came to listen to the Buddha preach. On the first day, he slept. At the end of the Buddha's sermon, he returned home and received money from his father. Gradually, on the third day, when he tried to listen to what the Buddha said, and he began to understand and like it, so after the three of them, the prince listened to the Dharma without accepting any more money, but every day he came to listen to the Buddha's teachings. . There was a beggar in America, every day he sat by the roadside begging. One day, a girl who came to give him money accidentally dropped his wedding ring into the beggar's money pot without knowing it. After the girl left, the beggar found a valuable ring lying in his pocket. If someone else is greedy, they will sell that ring for money. Now he doesn't do that, he sat at the old place every day waiting for the girl to come so he could give it back. A week later, the girl who lost the ring came to him and the old beggar gave the wedding ring back to the girl. The girl was overjoyed, thinking things like a dream, not in real life. She went home and told her fiancé about the loss of her engagement ring. The guy was very impressed and immediately went to the old beggar to make a report and put it on television. The story of the old beggar returning the ring to the girl is known by many people and they immediately campaigned, raising more than one hundred thousand dollars for the beggar. Through the television station, his sister, who had been missing for more than a decade, had the opportunity to find her younger brother. From there the two sisters met, and the money he earned from many of his supporters made him a well-to-do man and reunited with his family. The story gives us a profound lesson about non-greed. As the saying goes: "Triple mind is often lost, not seeking high self-esteem". It is also a result of spiritual practice in everyday life.
The practice in the Pali Canon taught by the Buddha is very practical. He taught that it is necessary to practice in ways that lead to one's success or failure. If a person: 1. Frequently contacts the bad guys, has little contact with the good people; 2. infatuated with sleep, lazy, inactive, often angry and fond of crowds; 3. rich but do not take care of their parents; 4. untruthful, deceiving people of good knowledge; 5. own a lot of property but do not share it with anyone; 6. conceit, pride in one's status, wealth and contempt for others; 7. indulgence in sensual pleasures, promiscuous relationships, waste in spending; 8. have an illegal relationship with another person's wife; 9. is always jealous of his wife; 10. binge eating and wastefulness; 11. greed is bottomless. Anyone who lives in connection with the above 11 problems will lead to a dark and unsuccessful end. These eleven factors often occur in daily life. There may be a family that is constantly involved in one or more of the above issues or is involved in all of them, which leads to death.
On the contrary, in Mahāmangalasuttagive eleven reasons for success or eleven blessings in a family if a person lives that 1. does not associate with bad people, is often close to good people, good friends; 2. live in a suitable place and always know how to control themselves; 3. always know how to learn and practice good skills and discipline from people who are good at transmitting; 4. know how to respect mother and father, know how to take care of children and wife; 5. know how to give alms, make offerings, live ethically, protect loved ones, and honest people; 6. give up and shun sin, refrain from drunkenness, have unwavering faith in the Dharma; 7. reverence and humility, gratitude and gratitude; 8. be patient and speak tenderly and lovingly, contact the wise, negotiate at the right time; 9. ashamed to repent for purity, realize the noble truths towards Nirvana; ten. mind is not sad, angry, hurtful, always motionless amidst the turmoil of the world; 11. obtain the highest blessings by accomplishing the above. Those are the 11 factors that lead to success in life.
Cultivation does not force us to do something sublime, but to practice simple things. Once upon a time, upon hearing the fame of Zen Master O Sao, To Dong Pha immediately went to inquire about the Way. He said, listening to the famous Zen master is there any moral or you teach me. Master O Sao replied, I have this principle, which is: "Do not do evil deeds, diligently do good deeds, keep a pure mind, that is the Buddha's teaching." To Dong Pha seemed to despise this teaching, so he said, I thought he had something sublime to teach me, but these things even children know. O Sao Zen master calmly replied, yes, this principle is known to a child but an eighty-year-old man may not be able to do it. Hearing this, To Dong Pha ceased to arrogantly despise and respect Zen Master O Sao.
A person who knows how to cultivate will share inspiration in their thinking and actions. Whatever the mind thinks, it acts like that and the results follow that. For example, the story between teacher Dam Thuan Huy and his students. One day, it rained heavily, so it was time to end school, but the students still had to linger and could not return, so Dam Than Huy took care of the students.
The exit: Vu is unstoppable, capable of saving guests (Rain, even if not chained or locked, can also keep guests staying)
The first student for: Shades of three peaches, heterosexuals (Beauty, even though it is not turbulent, is easy to make people sink.
Dam Than Huy commented: "This couplet is very good and correct, this literary device can pass Poinsettia, but in the future, beware that lust harms career". Sure enough, Nguyen Gian Thanh worked as an official at the Thuong Thu Ceremony and Thi Doc Academy, the Chancellor, and was stripped of the title of Uncle Trung, but because he was infatuated with a beautiful girl in the capital, he went to the box to lose his reputation.
The second student said to: Nguyet Friend has a bow that can't shoot people (The moon has a bow that doesn't shoot people)
Dam Than Huy assessed: "This sentence is less sharp, not as good as the other sentence, but shows a gentle temperament, will do it later, life will be perfect! This person is an honest mandarin, his honest nature is very popular with the people."
Another game spoke up: Disregarding the authority of the mutant (The shit has no authority to make people afraid)
Dam Than Huy said that the person who answered this question later, although very rich, was stingy and miserly. As a result, the other student also entered the rich in the region, but everyone criticized him for being rude and dishonorable.
Through three opposing sentences, the teacher knows the future of his students. The mind of the mind is born, the mind that thinks after it will touch it. So practice in thought, action and speech. Cultivating the mind is important, because the mind mastering the mind that creates it, as the Dhammapada says, is absolutely correct.
Cultivation requires the practice of letting go. If you don't let go, it's easy to create defilements. The story of Alexander teaches everyone a valuable lesson.
From the age of 16, Alexander began to follow his father in war and learn battle skills from his father, Emperor Philip. In 336 BC, Alexander was officially crowned emperor of Macedonia. Soon after he succeeded, he began to conduct conquests that were constantly expanding his territory.
With his tactical military talent, Alexander trampled Greece under his heel, directed his spear to conquer Asia Minor, Persia, Mesopotamia, Egypt... Even Alexander went further than all the pre-humans. It was his duty to bring his troops close to India's northern border, the Indus basin.
In just 13 short years, Alexander built an empire that stretched from Europe to Asia, including all the major civilization centers of the ancient world. He is also a literal "invincible" general who has never lost a single battle in his military career.
After being unable to advance further east, Alexander finally abandoned his expeditionary plan and acknowledged the empire's limits to stop at the banks of the Indus. In 323 BC, on his way back to Babylon, Alexander fell seriously ill and died at the age of 33.
Last wish: His death is still a mystery. However, the story of this great emperor's death is still being passed on unceasingly. It is said that in the moment when he felt death surrounding him, Alexander called his courtiers and told him: "Before I die, I have three things I want you to do, you must not disobey."
Specifically, those three are as follows:
- He wants all the best healers to carry his coffin back.
- He wanted the soldiers to scatter all the gold, silver, jewels, and ivory that he had saved all his life along the road leading to the cemetery.
- You want people to put their hands outside the lid of the coffin, so that all can see.
Alexander's courtiers were all amazed, thinking that his emperor was no longer sober. Alexander took a deep breath, then looked at them all at once and said: "The reason I ask you to do this is to remind the people of the world these three things":
First, no matter how good a doctor is, he can't really cure us. When faced with death, they were also helpless. So, learn to appreciate your life.
Second, no matter how much money or wealth, when you die, it becomes meaningless and can only be used to pave the way.
Third, when leaving this world, what people really have left are only two empty hands. We come and go like that, why should we hold on so much?
After saying that, Alexander sighed and slowly closed his eyes. A glorious life with many victories ended like that!
The above story teaches people to practice letting go. Realizing that the practice is noble. Everything in the world is impermanent and fictitious. Therefore, you should not be greedy, because the more you indulge, the more suffering you will suffer.
In short, a cultivator does not have a thousand pounds of strength, but the strength of a cultivator is spiritual strength. How can we withstand all the adversities? Cultivators always have a quiet strength within, not outward manifestation. Looking at a person, the first factor that wins our sympathy is that person's gentleness and virtue. A person with a gentle and kind face also shows some of his inner characteristics. Therefore, when people practice successfully, they will have a firm internal force, a strength that the Buddha calls the force of the path. And this power is different from worldly power. Strong people practice not to bully others but to comfort and bring joy to themselves and others.
When we learn to understand the Buddhadharma, we know that cause and effect can be changed, so we should not create more bad karma, but happily pay back the karma we have created from many previous lives. Don't cultivate more love and hate to avoid suffering in this life and in future lives. Once we understand the Way, we should open our hearts to those who love and hate each other, because that way we will meet each other again. Each meeting in samsara is another time of suffering like that, there is no joy in it. Why don't we remember that suffering and try to practice to overcome it. A practitioner's career is wisdom and forgiveness. Using the wisdom of Prajna to illuminate, all problems fall away, not only suffering. We develop the mind to practice with the goal of being liberated, so we only have to remove it, not get attached to it. How to stand firmly on your own two feet to be able to walk all the way to the Buddhist path to be able to get out of the cycle of birth and death. Therefore, each person needs to prepare for himself a solid and stable spiritual strength.END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).WORLD VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST ORDER=BUDDHIST DHARMA WHEEL GOLDEN MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.4/12/2021.
