Precepts, Concentration, Wisdom.VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.
COMMANDMENT
In Buddhism, "Precepts" mean the rules to prevent and prevent the body, speech and mind from committing evil, and at the same time to stop evil (prevention, just evil) or stop evil and do good (only evil, good deeds).
Therefore, precepts are rules and rules that need to be practiced, a barrier between good and evil, a method of treating sins caused by body, mouth, and mind, in order to benefit oneself. and for people. Precepts are the discipline of the Buddha Dharma, the life of the Sangha: "The precepts remain, the Buddha Dharma remains. The precepts are the life spans of the Buddha Dharma".
When about to enter Nirvana, the Buddha graciously taught his disciples: "Bhikkhus, after I pass away, you must respect and cherish the precepts, like a blind man who gains sight, a poor man without a vision. get treasure; You must know that the precepts are the great masters of the teachers. If we are still living in this world, it will be no different from this precept."
But the precepts are not the prohibitions that the Buddha issued, obliging the followers to obey, otherwise it is a crime. Buddhism does not conceive of rewarding good or punishing evil, but only teaches the principle of karma, the law of cause and effect. Whatever seed you sow, you will reap.
1. At first, the Buddha taught that people should try to avoid doing evil and unwholesome things.
2. After avoiding doing evil when the Buddha taught that we should immediately seize every opportunity to do good, doing good according to right conduct because such actions will positively affect our eternal happiness. A wholesome mind is a mind directed toward actions such as giving, observing precepts, meditating, paying respects to elders, serving, dedicating merit, rejoicing in the blessings of others, listening to the Dharma, and spreading the word. Dhamma and strengthening of right view etc..:
3. Praise the virtues: To show the superiority of the dharma precepts, the precepts rituals often give examples such as: "The precepts are like good soil, many good seeds are born from the earth. like a boat carrying people through a sea of suffering, like a string of lost pearls to adorn the dharmakaya." Or to say, "The precept is the boat that crosses the sea of suffering, the ladder that crosses the shore of birth and death". But the most popular saying is: "Sila is like strong armor to protect against the attacks of the six worlds." In this Dhammapada, we hear very beautiful praises for those who are virtuous. .
MEDITATION
"Meditation" is due to the combination of the Sanskrit word "Zen-na" (Jhana, Dhyana) with the Confucian word "Concentration". a single object that does not allow distraction, so that the mind is calm and strong, in order to observe and consider a problem to the extreme and thus realize the truth.
Meditation is the mental concentration to perform four levels of meditation, from "first meditation" to "fourth meditation". In the first jhāna, all desires and bad thoughts are eliminated, leaving only joyful emotions, happiness, and intellectual activities. In the second jhāna, all mental activities are eliminated, the mind becomes calm, mixed with joyful and happy emotions. In the third jhāna, joyful emotions disappear, leaving only a state of equanimity mixed with happiness. In the fourth jhāna, all notions of happiness and suffering are no more, neither pleasure nor pain, a state of pure equanimity is completely discovered.
Meditation is a practice aimed at taming the mind, training the mind, and so the word "Mind" is often used instead of the word meditation. Here we witness the important role of practice, training, and mind control in the life of lay and monastic Buddhists. The human mind is often weak and indeterminate, the mind is very restless, following the whirling desires, but taming the mind is not simple. Those who can control their own mind are freed from the bondage of desire. A good believer with ardent study, ordained as the Buddha, but soon found that the spiritual life is very difficult, because the precepts are too many. He was discontented and wanted to return to the world. The Buddha advised the teacher not to worry about the precepts more or less, but only need to worry about one thing, that is, to control and guard your thoughts, watch your mind.
Meditation is a necessary spiritual discipline, so using meditation to shepherd and purify the mind is the moral foundation to bring happiness and peace to mankind. That is why, the Buddha taught that those who are distracted are considered dead, and those who are diligent in meditating on time do not die.
The Buddha taught that no matter how foolish a person may act, the wise must always keep a mindful mind, guarding the mind as the greatest treasure.
When he uses his mind to repel distractions, the wise man is freed from afflictions, ascends to the temple of wisdom, and looks down upon the throngs of suffering people, just as a skillful climber ascends to the supreme summit, looking back at the ignorance that remains. flat ground. Because of the two different ways of life, the sages have a very special, very different view of the ignorant fools.
In the practice of meditation, it is necessary to apply the following methods: Or regulate the breath, follow the breath in and out, so that the mind is not disturbed; Or meditate, keep the mind clean and calm, make the mind rest in a pure thought; Or meditate, use thinking to study, search until the most pure scene. "Concentration study" gives the mind free from distractions and darkness, wisdom is developed and energy is generated, if its method is properly practiced. And Meditation is the basis for the arising of Wisdom.
WISDOM
From meditation, practitioners gradually progress to wisdom. The purpose of Buddhism is to eliminate suffering and bring joy to all living beings, but it takes only a person with wisdom to know the way to peace and happiness, to the shore of liberation and enlightenment. Therefore, the role of wisdom occupies a key position in all the teachings of the Buddha. We can say that Buddhism is the way of the wise, the way of wisdom.
First of all we should distinguish two classes of people. A very erudite person in Buddhism, knowledgeable about the scriptures a lot, but only studies Buddhism, no practice. Talking about meditating, you are very good at meditating, but you don't meditate. Very good presentation of the wonderful use of wisdom, but not developing wisdom. This class of people is not yet called wise. Another class of person, who has faith, practices according to the forbidden precepts in Buddhism, but only has faith, has not yet converted faith into wisdom, that person is still capable of being influenced by greed, hatred, and delusion and therefore, not yet considered a person of wisdom.
"Wisdom" is to distinguish the truth, to choose the dharmas, to stop doubting, to prove the truth. Wisdom is the mind's ability to enlighten, contemplate things, penetrate and realize the truth. Wisdom is the clear dharma of the self-mind, always available and available to everyone, just because of confusion, they do not know themselves, causing wisdom not to be developed.
Wisdom here is seeing the truth of life, seeing the truth about life and the universe; it never considers things by feeling, by guessing, by feeling; but it looks at things and phenomena through the experience of meditation practice and enters right concentration, right view.
Wisdom can be broken down into three categories: Wisdom arising by listening to the teachings of others; wisdom in the sense that arises by inference; and wisdom acquired by meditation to be enlightened and lucid. The first two types only give us insight into worldly reasoning. Because of those two methods, we can only understand things within the scope that philosophy can understand such as distinguishing good and evil; what to do, what not to do. As for the third type, it is through meditation that we can intuitively realize truths that are beyond the scope of reason. The state of being focused on the subject of meditation is not a drowsy, negative state of mind, but an active, active, energetic one. It is through meditation that we can transcend all physical realms, through meditation we can put ourselves in a disciplined life, in control of our bodies and minds, self-enlightened and fully enlightened. Meditation is a tonic for both the mind and the mind. This kind of wisdom was greatly praised by the Buddha.
Thus, unstained wisdom is different from worldly wisdom or worldly knowledge. Non-smudged wisdom is the path to complete liberation, a source of true peace and happiness, but worldly wisdom is just a helping factor.
The three main functions of wisdom are as follows:
1. Get rid of afflictions: Affliction is the fire that always lies dormant and burns in us at any time. It has the ability to burn away all the good deeds, all the merits that we have created. Defilement is caused by delusion. When wisdom is present, confusion must disappear, just as when light is emitted, darkness must disappear. Once delusion is gone, afflictions will no longer arise.
2. Illuminate things: Things are obscured by ignorance, like the morning mist that covers the landscape, like clouds that cover the moon, causing the earth to be covered in darkness. Now wisdom shines on things, just like when the sun's light rises, the mist must disappear; when the clouds clear, the moon will appear and the earth will be bright again. of things presented as they really are. Buddhism uses only one sword, the sword of wisdom, and recognizes only one enemy, ignorance.
3. Incorporating the truth: When being covered by ignorance, we are with people, we with things seem separate and different. Now, thanks to the enlightenment of wisdom, I can clearly see that the mind is empty, so I can enter the truth and be fully enlightened. Buddhism builds a peaceful and happy life by wisdom, not by faith.
Before entering Nirvana, the Buddha also earnestly reminded that: "Wisdom is a sturdy boat carried out of the sea of old age, pain, and death; it is a great lamp illuminating ignorance and darkness; it is a good remedy for all. All sicknesses; an iron hammer that cuts down the tree of affliction. So you must use hearing, thinking, and practice to benefit yourselves."
"Buddhism is the way of wisdom" because the cardinal had enlightened to the absolute truth and taught his followers what he knew with his outstanding wisdom. Science more than 25 centuries ago was still in its infancy, humans did not have microscopes or telescopes, nor spaceships, yet the Buddha knew that in the glass of water there were countless germs, in The universe has worlds. His teachings about the human universe, so far are still the truth. And the more science advances, the more it proves the truth of everything he has said before.
Gender, Determination, Insight
Precepts, Concentration and Wisdom are the three most basic subjects in the Buddhist education system. Because all Buddhist teachings are not outside the scope of the Precepts of Concentration. Therefore, to say that studying Buddhism is learning Precepts of Concentration, practicing Buddhism is cultivating Precepts of Concentration
Precepts, Concentration and Wisdom, the three subjects of non-trafficking, are found only in the teachings of the Buddha. These three subjects help practitioners to overcome the bondage of afflictions, to be completely free; It is a means to help practitioners not fall into the three realms of Desire, Form Realm, and Formless Realm, the mind is not bound by all taints, and does not stop at meritorious deeds.
On the basis of analysis, it can be said that, from Precepts gives birth to Concentration, from Concentration develops Wisdom. But actually these are not the three elaborate stages in the order before and after, but Precepts, Concentrations and Wisdoms have a mutual relationship, coincide with cause and effect, and are closely related to each other like a closed circle. separate from each other. Therefore, the Buddha has repeatedly lectured with the Precepts of Concentration; which we need to develop almost synchronously according to each person's ability.END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).WORLD VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST ORDER=BUDDHIST DHARMA WHEEL GOLDEN MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.5/12/2021.
