From Phulonga… VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.
Reading the short dialogue between the Buddha and Phulna when Phulna made a vow to teach in Dulona, we can all feel his brave and fearless spirit:
- White World Honored One! Please kindly allow me to go to Dulona to teach!
Buddha heard it, very happy, but the Buddha was a great missionary, he knew it was not easy. The Ton said:
- Fulonga! The teaching of sentient beings, benefiting ourselves and others, I am very happy about his aspiration, he goes to teach everywhere we are satisfied. It is not necessary to go to Dulona. You'd better choose somewhere else.
- White World Honored One! He often taught, wherever there are sentient beings worthy of going there to teach them?
Buddha explained:
- Fulonga! Dulona is a small and remote country, with no convenient roads, unsatisfactory education, violent people, and violent habits. When foreigners come to that country, there will be many obstacles. Aren't you afraid of danger?
Hearing the Buddha say that, Purna only smiled, expressing his resolute aspiration.
According to the Ka-A-ham Sutra, volume 13 and the Law of Maha Sangha, volume 23, the Dulona people [1] in western India are cruel, rude, and like to curse. Phulna was resolute and boldly asked the Buddha to come and teach the people of that land. He preached the Dharma to save 500 Upasakas, built 500 monks and nuns, making the Summer Retreat complete. After that, he entered Nirvana without residue in this country.
The story climaxes when the Blessed One poses practical questions that might arise and probes the behavior of the ardent disciple:
- Fulonga! You are right, being a disciple of the Tathagata and teaching sentient beings is the most important thing. Now the Tathagata asked him. He went to Dulona, if they did not accept him, but shouted loudly, what would he do?
- White World Honored One! They scolded me, I still think they are good because they are not so rude that they beat me with sticks and sticks.
– What if they used fists, bricks and sticks to beat you?
– I still think they are still good, not to the point of stabbing me.
- What if they used knives and hammers like that?
- I also give them very well, they also have human love that is not enough to kill me.
- What if they killed him?
- In that case, I would like to thank them, for killing my form body, supporting my path and karma, helping me to return my life to the Blessed One's kindness, even though there is no obstacle, I am afraid of harm. It's not good for them.
The Buddha was very happy and praised the Venerable:
- Fulonga! He is not ashamed to be a disciple of the Tathagata, knows how to teach, and is patient. His state of mind is very peaceful, the Tathagata will take him on the road! [2]
With overwhelming emotion, we read more to know about this character. It is not known who he is, but his fearless zeal in preaching the Dharma has a place in his heart. Since then, we know more about him in many suttas. His name is Purna-maitrayaniputra , Pali: Punna-mantani-putra, Chinese transliteration is Phul-na-mita-la-nitu . Chinese translation: Man Tu Tu, Man Chuc Tu, Man Vuong Tu.
"Man" is his name, "Tzu" is his mother's last name; Because of his mother's surname, he called him Man Tu Tu. "Di-la" is the family name of the mother, which means wishes, vows, so it is called Manchuc Tu, Man Vow Tu, the name of an Arahant, one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha, who Ca-pil-la-va (ie Ca-pilavat), son of the national teacher of King Tinh Sanh dynasty, belonging to the Brahmin lineage.
He had a dignified appearance, intelligent from childhood, knowledgeable about the Vedas, growing up he felt bored with the world, wanted to find a way to liberation, so on the night Prince Siddhartha crossed the city, He and 30 friends at the same time entered the Snow Mountain to practice asceticism according to the Dharma of the Brahmins. Wholeheartedly ascetic efforts, finally achieved the Fourth Jhana, the Fifth. When the Buddha attained enlightenment, turned the wheel of Dharma in the garden of Deer, he went to the Buddha's place to seek ordination and receive the full precepts, and then attained Arahantship [3] .
According to the Lotus Sutra , volume 4, grade five hundred disciples , the Buddha prophesied that he would become a Buddha in the future, known as Phap Minh Tathagata. And University area west road sign book is written clearly 4, in the capital city of tear-bowl-la [4] still tower relics of his church.
His achievements in teaching in Dulona have drawn a lesson in the virtues of preaching; It is not enough only with knowledge and extensive study, but also with a wholehearted commitment to serve the religion; without this decisive factor, we are very easily discouraged, will look for something more possible. We find out how his work was carried out in that 'boundary' land.
The land of Dulona is bad, the people are poor, where there are no high mountains, the water is deep. The whole country has no prosperous cities, there are very few crowded villages, people live only by hunting and eating. feathers in the hole.
When the new monk arrived, he was not in a hurry to teach the Dharma immediately. Before that, he had finished studying the local language Dulona to easily enter the missionary work. In addition to the language, he had to prepare many conditions.
The people of Dulona had not much difference in their language, but everyone who saw him wearing a robe and carrying a bowl looked at him with strange eyes. The venerable knows that in such a backward culture, if not using means, it is difficult to develop faith for them. He also knew that at this time, no one would listen to the truth when talking about magic and magic, mainly to improve people's living standards first. Dissemination of the Dharma does not go out of the world's activities. Therefore, for the time being, he did not reveal his status as a recluse, just like a doctor, taking care of the sick every day and taking care of the sick.
Phulanna had many simple remedies for diseases, regardless of the remote villages, even if he had to climb passes and cross streams, whenever he heard the sick groan, he immediately went to the place, regardless of day or night, no matter what. tell the young beginning, the end of the tank.
The sick see him as if seeing a savior, no matter how serious the illness, they will naturally pass away.
Phu-la-na has the capacity of an educator, teaching and learning to read and write fluently. During the day, he taught how to plant crops in time for the weather, the methods of treatment, in the afternoon he gathered people together, and taught about the cause and effect of the Five Precepts and the Ten Virtues. Before long, the people of Dulona all took refuge in the Buddha, and here he gathered 500 disciples and established 500 monasteries [5] .
Thanks to such deeds, he succeeded in making the poor people in that faraway country take refuge in the Three Jewels. Therefore, he was not chased, beaten, abandoned in that foreign country as originally planned.
One day, when the Blessed One on the throne looked down and saw Purna paying homage with them, the Buddha smiled and asked:
- Fulonga! Are you there! The masses are worried about him! Did he successfully convert sentient beings in Dulona? He helps us to proclaim the truth, spiritually, and physically pure. Mentally, he has established a firm belief in the Three Jewels, he has fully cultivated compassion, calmness, intelligence, and courage, physically he has cultivated a healthy body and quality. Happiness, style, sound, and talent are all perfect. Phulonna, I am very relieved when you come to Dulona to teach.
The Buddha paused for a moment, then told the assembly:
- Bhikkhus! In the ranks of my disciples, as Phulna, only worthy of the title of the first Dharma preacher, you should follow Phulna's example [6] .
Since then, in spreading the Tathagata's teachings, he has helped young bhikkhus have a strong will, a fearless spirit through practicing according to the Buddha's teachings on the ten precepts. That is:
Know the legal meaning
Can preach
Not afraid in front of the crowd
Fearless skill
Many clever means
Depending on the law that is promulgated
Full of majesty
Courageous and diligent
Body and mind are not tired
Mighty achievements.
He has unobstructed eloquence, skillful in distinguishing the meaning, so he accomplished the practice of teaching the Dharma. The number of people who were liberated by listening to him preach the Dharma was 99,000, so he was honored as the "First Dharma Lecturer".
Going to Truc Dao Sinh
Born to preach the
first point of the Buddha's teachings [7] .
Truc Daosheng (竺道生) is a member of the Wei family. His father was an administrative officer in Pengcheng district, he was known as an honest mandarin. His biography states: “Born was an unusually intelligent boy who immediately understood what had just been taught. With the consent of his father, Truc Dao Sinh ordained with Truc Phap Thai (竺 法汰, 320-387) at Ngoa Quan Temple (瓦官寺) in Kien Khang. At the age of 15, he was able to teach the Dharma and had the prospect of becoming a future shaman. When he was ordained as a bhikkhu at the age of 20, he became a prestigious shaman.
The first trip in Truc Dao Sinh's life when he was 30 years old. He probably came to Lushan (the mountain range south of Kiukiang on the Yangtze River), the center of Buddhist activity, as early as 397. Here he met Huiyuan (334-416) and the Sangha. rack-grandmother (Samghadeva僧伽提; 365-384), a monk belonging Luan Sarvastivada from Lo Son Kashmira to about 4-5 years after the year 385, and here, he has translated a-Pi-reaching The mind treatise was compiled by Dharmarśresti in 391 and the Tridharmaka Sūtra , belonging to the A-function system shortly after.
When the six-volume Nirvana Sutra spread to China, Truc Dao Sinh immediately learned about Buddha nature and penetrated this meaning. Later, he believed that Icchantika would also become a Buddha. At that time, the text of the Great Nirvana Sutra (Large Nirvāṇa Sūtra) has not been fully transmitted to China. Truc Dao Sinh knows that. However, he alone faced the opposition of the Sangha. The Sangha gathered to accuse him of preaching heresy. As the controversy grew more intense, the matter was brought before the entire Sangha and expulsion was decided. Truc Dao Born in front of the four groups, solemnly and solemnly swore an oath that: If my views are not in accord with the sutras, I vow that in this life, my body will suffer from leprosy; and if that view is completely in accord with the sutra's intention, may I be freed while sitting on the throne teaching the Dharma. He finished speaking these words and peacefully left the Sangha.
Truc Daosheng returns to Huqiu Mountain in Jiangsu. Phap Cuong, one of the authors whose letters in the Banzong Commentaries, is standing there. Truc Dao Sinh was probably in the monastery of Phap Cuong. Here, the story records, he called the rocks to gather in the wilderness to testify that he spoke the truth about the Idkhāya dharma.
When the Northern version of the Nirvana Sutra was transmitted to China, it clearly stated that Nhat Xian-de had Buddha nature; completely in accord with the thought of Truc Dao Sinh. As soon as he got this sutra, Truc Dao Sinh studied it thoroughly and it became the subject of his lectures.
Emperor Song was also informed, and an edict was sent to Lo Son. Truc Dao Sinh went to the capital to carefully study the contents of the sutras and was restored by order of the king.
In the tenth month of the Yuanjian era (元嘉, 11th year of the year, 424), in the winter while he was sitting on the throne teaching the Dharma; he looked so radiant as if he was excited and his words came out with extraordinary power. He has addressed the subject several times, leading his listeners to deep conceptual penetration. All present audiences are enlightened and satisfied. Suddenly, when the sermon came to an end, the bamboo pole in his hand vibrated and fell. He sat leaning on the throne in the full lotus position. His face remained unchanged, making people look like he was meditating. New Buddhists find themselves at a great loss. His shining spiritual example has now been clearly demonstrated.END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).WORLD VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST ORDER=BUDDHIST DHARMA WHEEL GOLDEN MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.9/12/2021.
