Category: THE MADHYAMA AGAMA SUTRA MIDDLE LENGTH SAVINGS.
T O heard something like this:
At one time, the Buddha was traveling in Batqi-sau [02] , in the hamlet of Anoba [03] of the Ba-ki people.
Then, at noon, the Blessed One arose from his seclusion, stepped out of the retreat, and said:
“Ananda, you and I should go to the Amitabha River [04] to bathe.
Venerable Ananda said:
"Regards yes".
At that time, the World-Honored One and the venerable Ananda went to the Amitabha River, took off their clothes on the riverbank, and went into the water to bathe. After bathing, go ashore, dry yourself and put on your clothes. At that time, venerable Ananda held a fan to serve the Buddha. At that time, the Blessed One turned around and asked:
“Ananda, Devadatta, because he was distracted, would fall into a very miserable state, inevitably going to an evil place, reborn in hell, where he would spend the rest of his life, unable to be saved. Ananda, have you heard the bhikkhus say that I have determined that Devadatta will inevitably go to an evil place, be born in hell, and stay there for the rest of his life, unable to be saved?"
Venerable Ananda said:
“Indeed, at that time a bhikkhu said to me: 'Venerable Ananda, is it possible that the Blessed One, using the other mind, knows Devadatta's mind well, so he determined that Devadatta [05] is sure to go to a bad place, be born in hell, stay there for a lifetime, without salvation? [06] '”
The Buddha said:
"Ananda, that bhikkhu, whether young, or middle-aged, or old, or young, does not understand [07]. Why? The Tathagata has determined, but he still has doubts. Ananda, I do not see gods, demons, Brahmas, recluses, Brahmas or anyone else in this world from man to heaven as I have firmly recorded Devadatta. Why? Ananda, I have determined that Devadatta will definitely go to a bad place, be born in hell, and stay there for the rest of his life, unable to be saved. Ananda, if I had seen Devadatta possessing a hair of purity in the dharma, I would not have determined that Devadatta would definitely go to evil, be reborn in hell, live in hell. That's a lifetime, can't be saved. Ananda, since I don't see Devadatta having the least amount of purity in the dharma, so I determine that Devadatta is sure to go to evil places, be reborn in hell, and live in hell. That's a lifetime, can't be saved.
“Ananda, for example, not far from a certain village, there is a deep pit that is wide and deep, and someone falls into it and sinks to the bottom. Some people come to see, generate great compassion, desire for benefits and blessings, peace, and pleasure. He looked around and said, 'Does this man have a hairy spot where his hair doesn't get sticky so I can pull it up?' He looked all over his body, but there was no place like a hair, a strand of hair that was not sticky so that he could pull it up with his hand. In the same way, Ananda, if I had seen Devadatta as pure as a hair, I would not have stated that Devadatta was bound to go to evil, reborn in hell, there for a lifetime, unable to be saved. Ananda, since I have not seen Devadatta possessing a single hair of pure dharma,
At that time, Venerable Ananda wept, wiped away tears with his hand [08] and said:
“Dear World Honored One! It's wondrous! It's fabulous! The Blessed One has determined that 'Devada is certain to go to an evil place, to be reborn in hell, where there is no way to save an aeon'."
“That's right, Ananda! That's right, Ananda! It is determined that Devadatta will definitely go to evil, be born in hell, stay there for the rest of his life, unable to save. Ananda, if you were to be taught by the Tathagata about discriminating Great Humans' wisdom [09], you would certainly have supreme faith in the Tathagata and be always happy."
At that time, Venerable Ananda folded his hands towards the Buddha and said:
“World-Honored One, now is the right time! Bach Thien The, now is the right time! Expect the World-Honored One to preach to the Bhikkhus about discriminating Great Humans' knowledge. The bhikkhus who are preached to by the Blessed One will skillfully uphold and uphold them."
The Buddha said:
“A-nan, listen! Be thoughtful. Now I will teach you about discriminating Great Humans' wisdom."
Venerable Ananda obeyed and waited to hear.
The Ton said:
“Ananda, the Tathāgata uses the mind of others to observe the minds of others, knowing that this person has accomplished wholesome dharmas and also accomplished unwholesome dharmas. After that, the Tathagata, using the mind of Tha, examines this person's mind again, knowing that this person destroys wholesome dharmas and gives rise to unwholesome dharmas. This person has destroyed kusala dharmas, and unwholesome dharmas have arisen, but the remaining wholesome roots have not been cut off. Charity that root will generate good dharma. Thus, this person attains pure dharma.
“Ananda, for example, early in the morning, when the sun appears, the darkness disappears, and light arises. Ananda, what do you think, when the sun rises until lunchtime, is it possible that darkness has ceased and light has arisen?
Venerable Ananda said:
"Venerable Sir, that's right."
"In the same way, Ananda, the Tathāgata uses the mind of others to examine the minds of others, knowing that this person has accomplished wholesome dharmas and also accomplished unwholesome dharmas. After that, the Tathagata used the mind of Tha to examine this person's mind again, knowing that this person destroys wholesome dharmas and gives rise to unwholesome dharmas. This person has destroyed kusala dharmas, and unwholesome dharmas have arisen, but the wholesome roots remain, not yet cut off. That charity will give rise to good dharma. Thus, this person attains pure dharma.
“Ananda, it is like a grain of rice that does not spoil, does not break, does not rot, does not crack, is not damaged by wind or sun, the autumn is hidden away. If a lay person is good, fixes a good field, then throws seeds in and rains down at the right time, then, Ananda, what do you think, will the seed gradually grow?"
Venerable Ananda said:
"Venerable Sir, it is possible."
“In the same way, Ananda, the Tathāgata uses the mind of other to examine the minds of others, knowing that this person has accomplished wholesome dharmas and also accomplished unwholesome dharmas. Then the Tathagata uses Tha mind to observe this person's mind again, knowing that this person destroys good dharmas and gives birth to unwholesome dharmas; this person has destroyed kusala dhammas, and unwholesome dharmas have arisen, but the remaining wholesome roots have not been cut off. Charity that root, good dharma will arise again. Thus this person attains pure dharma. Ananda, that's called the Tathagata's Great Human Intelligence. The Tathagata understands rightly the root of such dharmas.
“Again, Ananda, the Tathāgata uses the mind of others to examine the minds of others, knowing that this person has accomplished wholesome dharmas and also accomplished unwholesome dharmas. Then the Tathagata uses the mind of Tha to examine this person's mind again, knowing that this person has destroyed good dharmas, has arisen unwholesome dharmas, and the remaining good roots have not been cut off, and will certainly cease. Thus, this person goes to dharma degenerate [10] .
“Ananda, for example, from noon until sunset, light disappears, darkness arises; Ananda, what do you think, after the sun goes down, does the light disappear and the darkness arise?"
Venerable Ananda said:
"Venerable Sir, that's right."
“In the same way, Ananda, the Tathāgata uses the mind of other to examine the minds of others, knowing that this person has accomplished wholesome dharmas and also accomplished unwholesome dharmas. Then the Tathagata uses Tha mind to observe this person's mind again, knowing that this person destroys good dharmas and gives birth to unwholesome dharmas; this person has destroyed kusala dhammas, unwholesome dharmas have arisen, the good roots that remain have not been cut off, and will certainly be cut off. Thus, this person goes to the dharma of degeneracy.”
“Ananda, like a grain of rice that is not damaged, does not break, does not rot, does not crack, is not damaged by wind or sun, the coming autumn is hidden away. If that layman is good, fixes his fields well, and then throws seeds in, but it doesn't rain at the wrong time, then, Ananda, what do you think, will this seed gradually grow?"
Venerable Ananda said:
"World-Honored One, it's impossible."
"In the same way, Ananda, the Tathāgata uses the mind of others to examine the minds of others, knowing that this person has accomplished wholesome dharmas and also accomplished unwholesome dharmas.
"Ananda, that's called the Tathagata's great human capacity. The Tathagata understands rightly the root of such dharmas.
“Again, Ananda, the Tathagata uses the mind of Tha to observe the minds of others. I don't see this person having any pure dharma, not even a single hair. This person insists on having only evil, unwholesome, and unclean dharmas, as the root of future existence, which is annoyance, suffering, and is the cause of birth, old age, illness, and death. Thus, when this person breaks up with his body and dies, he will definitely go to an evil place and be reborn in hell."
“Ananda, like a seed that does not perish, breaks, or rots, is damaged by wind and sun, autumn is not hidden away. If that layman is not a good farmer, but he is not good at farming, sowing the seed and the rain is out of time, then, Ananda, what do you think, will the rice seed gradually grow? ”
Venerable Ananda said:
"Venerable Sir, no."
“In the same way, Ananda, the Tathagata uses the mind of other to examine the minds of others, and I do not see that this person has the slightest amount of pure dharma, even by the hair. This person is completely filled with evil and unwholesome dharmas, tainted, as the root of future existence, yet afflicted with heat, suffering and retribution, the cause of birth, old age, illness, and death. Thus, when this person breaks up with his body and dies, he will definitely go to an evil place and be reborn in hell. Ananda, that's called the Tathagata's Great Human Intelligence. The Tathagata understands rightly the root of such dharmas.”
“At that time the venerable Ananda, with his palms together, said to the Buddha:
“Venerable sir, the Blessed One has spoken of these three classes of people. Would it be possible for the Blessed One to speak about the other three classes of people?"
The Buddha said:
“I can tell. Ananda, the Tathāgata uses the mind of others to examine the minds of others, knowing that this person has accomplished unwholesome dharmas and also accomplished wholesome dharmas. After that, the Tathagata used the mind of Tha to examine this person's mind again, knowing that this person would destroy unwholesome dharmas and give rise to good dharmas. This person has destroyed unwholesome dharmas and born good dharmas, but the unwholesome roots of unwholesomeness have not yet been cut off. From this unwholesome root will arise unwholesome dharma. Thus, this person goes to dharma degenerate.
“Ananda, it's like a fire, when it's only lit one flame, someone pushes more hay and then piles up the dry wood. What do you think, Ananda, that the fire burns even stronger?"
Venerable Ananda said:
"Venerable sir, that's the way it is."
"In the same way, Ananda, the Tathagata uses the mind of other than to examine the minds of others, knowing that this person has accomplished unwholesome dharmas and also accomplished wholesome dharmas. After that, the Tathagata used the mind of Tha to examine this person's mind again, knowing that this person would destroy unwholesome dharmas and give rise to good dharmas. This person has been eliminated from the unwholesome dharma, and the good dharma has arisen, but the unwholesome root has not yet been cut off. From that unwholesome root will arise unwholesome dharma. Thus, this person goes to dharma degenerate.
"This, Ananda, is called the Tathagata's great human capacity. The Tathagata understands rightly the root of such dharmas.
“Again, Ananda, the Tathāgata uses the mind of others to examine the minds of others, knowing that this person has accomplished unwholesome dharmas and also accomplished wholesome dharmas. After that, the Tathagata used the mind of Tha to examine this person's mind again, knowing that this person would destroy unwholesome dharmas and give rise to good dharmas. This person has eradicated unwholesome dharmas and generated wholesome dharmas, but the remaining unwholesome roots have not yet been cut off, and will certainly cease. Thus, this person attains pure dharma.
“Ananda, for example, when lighting a fire, there is only one flame at first, and someone puts this burning tree of fire on flat ground or on a rock; Hey Ananda, what do you think, will the fire burn even more fiercely?"
Venerable Ananda said:
"Venerable sir, that's not possible."
"In the same way, Ananda, the Tathagata uses the mind of other than to examine the minds of others, knowing that this person has accomplished unwholesome dharmas and also accomplished wholesome dharmas. Then the Tathagata used the mind of Tha to examine this person's mind again, knowing that this person destroys unwholesome dharmas and gives rise to good dharmas. This person has eradicated unwholesome dharmas and generated wholesome dharmas, but the remaining unwholesome roots have not yet been cut off, and will certainly cease. Thus this person attains pure dharma.
"Ananda, that's called the Tathagata's great human capacity. The Tathagata understands rightly the root of such dharmas.
"Again, Ananda, the Tathagata uses the mind of Tha to examine the minds of others, and I do not see that this person has the slightest bit of black karma even the size of a hair. This person is absolutely only filled with wholesome dharmas, along with happiness, receiving bliss, will surely be born in a happy land and have a long life. Thus, this person right in this life will surely attain Nirvana.
“Ananda, it is like the ashes of a fire that have been extinguished long ago and have cooled down, and a man fills it with hay and then fills it with dry wood; What do you think, Ananda, can a cold mind burn?"
Venerable Ananda said:
"World-Honored One, it's impossible."
“In the same way, Ananda, the Tathagata uses the mind of Tha to observe the minds of others. I don't see that this person has even a single hair of black karma. This person is absolutely only filled with wholesome dharmas, along with happiness, receiving bliss, will surely be born in a happy land and have a long life. Thus, this person right in this life will surely attain Nirvana. This, Ananda, is called the Tathagata's great human capacity. The Tathagata understands rightly the root of such dharmas.
"Ananda, the three classes of people mentioned above, the first class attains the pure dharma, the second class attains the degenerate dharma, and the third class of people, when the body breaks down, after death, inevitably goes to an evil place and is reborn in hell.
“The three classes of people I will talk about later, the first class of people attains the dharma of degradation, the second class of people attains the pure dharma, the third class of people attains Nirvana in this life.
“Ananda, I have lectured you about the great man of wisdom. Just as the Master loves his disciples, generates great compassion, wishes for benefits and blessings, and enjoys peace and happiness, which I have already done, you must also do it yourself. . Go to a deserted forest, under a tree or somewhere quiet, and meditate and think, don't be distracted. Be diligent and diligent, don't regret later. That is My teaching! That is My advice!”
Buddha said so. Venerable Ananda, after listening to the Buddha's lecture, happily served.END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).WORLD VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST ORDER=BUDDHIST DHARMA WHEEL GOLDEN MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.13/12/2021.
