What is the bardo body? VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.
The bardo is also called the bardo, or the bardo. The Buddha's book calls warm or aggregated as only form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness (5 aggregates). The five aggregates or warm years are the five groups of elements that make up beings in the three realms. Kettle is an old translation from the Tang Dynasty and earlier. Aggregate is a new translation after the Tang Dynasty. Beings in the three realms are also called 25 beings. Being (existence) is the five aggregates. Because he is afflicted and restricted by the five aggregates, he cannot go beyond the three realms. Liberation from the cycle of birth and death means going beyond the three realms of the five aggregates.
In Chinese folklore, there is a saying "Beyond the three realms, no longer in the five elements". This sentence changes the concept of the five aggregates of Buddhism into five elements: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. In fact, the Five Elements are mutual, and belong to the material world (mutually and in conflict). The material aggregates in the five skandhas of Buddhism cover all five formations. The remaining four aggregates belong to the mental world. The union of spirit with matter produces the phenomenon of the activity of beings in the three realms.
According to the treatise on "The Verdict", volume 10, the Sanskrit bardo has five meanings: the mind gives birth to the body, seeks birth, eats spices, the bardo, and arises.
The will to give birth to the body is due to the mind wishing for a body to be reborn. To be born is to constantly search for a place where you can be reborn. Eating flavoring is sustaining yourself by feeding yourself with the delicious foods you like. The bardo is the transitional time between death and rebirth. To arise is to appear after the death of the previous life body.
If the bardo body has good blessings, they can eat good spices. The "unhappy" bardo has to nourish itself with stinky food. In general, the bardo body sees things that cannot be seen by the human eye of the living.
As to how long the bardo body lasts, there are different theories. There is a theory that the bardo body lasts until rebirth, no matter how long it is called the bardo. There is a theory that the bardo body lasts only seven days, dies and takes another bardo, until rebirth.
The most widely accepted theory is that of the "Great Bhikkhu Sa sāra", which holds that the bardo only lasts for 49 days. Therefore, there is a custom to do Buddhist activities such as offering boys, giving alms, and making merit to save the dead within 49 days after the funeral. The 49-day spirit offering has become a Buddhist belief tradition.
In fact, sentient beings in the three realms after death all pass through an intermediate body period, before being reborn in another body. Only sentient beings in the formless realm are constantly in the meditative state, have no form aggregates, and therefore do not have an intermediate body. According to the "Great Treasure" Sutra, volume 56 (Integrating the womb), the intermediate body of beings from hell has an ugly appearance like burnt dry wood. The intermediate body of beings transferred from the hungry ghost realm has the color of water, the intermediate body of beings in the human realm and the heavenly realm has a yellow color, and the intermediate body of beings transferred from the form world has a beautiful white color. Therefore, the shape of the bardo body can have two arms, two legs, four legs, many legs or no legs are formed by the appearance of sentient beings in the previous life. The treatise on "The Amnesty", volume 9 says, the intermediate body of a person belonging to the sensual world has the body of a 5- or 6-year-old boy, the intermediate body of a bodhisattva in the desire realm has a body like that of a young man with a beautiful appearance, when he is conceived and born has a luminous aura. The bardo body of the Heaven realm of the rupa world has a full round body like when it was alive. According to the "Mahayana Meaning Chapter", volume 8, sentient beings in the two realms of desire and form in general have an intermediate body. Only the very good (highly good) beings or the extremely evil beings who, after death or rebirth in the Pure Land, or die, are reborn as gods, or fall into hell, or fall as ghosts, do not have an intermediate state body. . Sentient beings who commit the five transgressions fall into the evil realm, without an intermediate body. At conception and birth, both have bright auras. The bardo body of the Heaven realm of the rupa world has a full round body like when it was alive. According to the book "Explanation of Doubts about Rebirth in the Pure Land", volume 2, there are also two explanations: One is that one is reborn in the Pure Land without an intermediate body because after death, he is immediately reborn in a lotus flower. Another theory says, sentient beings from the filthy realm, born in a pure realm, should have an intermediate body. But that bardo body surpasses the ten thousand kotis of buddha lands, in the snap of a finger, and that bardo body is nourished by the fragrance of the buddha realm.
Thus, based on the sutras cited above, all sentient beings in the sensual and form realms, apart from those who are extremely good or extremely evil, have an intermediate state body. In the intermediate body stage, they do not belong to any realm of existence. But when the conditions are ripe, they are reborn, either in the form of pregnancy or birth, etc.
But before reincarnation, there is still a method to make it possible to be reborn in a good direction. Those methods are listening to the Buddha's teachings, having relatives for their sake, giving alms, making offerings, making merit, etc. can affect the first birth of the bardo body. On the contrary, if causing resentment or heavy karma, due to the bad influence of relatives or enemies of the bardo, it is possible to fall into the evil path because of that. Therefore, Buddhism in Tibet pays great attention to the measure of transcending the bardo body. Hien Dao also focuses on protecting mindfulness and transcending within 49 days. As for Buddhism to save the bardo body, one should invite the bardo body to listen to the Buddhadharma, shake off all wrongdoings in the bardo body's mind, reduce afflictions, use the power of the Buddha Dharma to make ghosts and spirits happy, etc. … Thanks to all the merits that make good conditions, helping the bardo body to be super.
As for those who are very good or extremely evil, who do not have an intermediate body, it is easy to understand. Just like a good student, after graduating, he is sent to study abroad immediately or is invited to work immediately by an agency or enterprise, without having to wait for work arrangements. On the other hand, there are people living who do many evil deeds, and when they die, they will be reborn as cattle, cows, chickens, and goats, and will definitely be slaughtered. If you accumulate virtue and do good, have deep faith, and strong vows, you will definitely not have to worry about falling into the three realms but can be reborn in the Pure Land or in the Sa Ba realm. waiting in shock, but immediately reincarnated in the Buddha realms or reborn in the good realms to continue practicing Bodhisattva, without having an intermediate body, nor with anyone to organize a transcendence for you.END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).BUDDHIST DHARMA WHEEL GOLDEN MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.6/10/2021.
