CONTENT OF POTALIYA Suttas 1. Layman Potaliya has given up his profession and family customs, traveling here and there; he thought that was the end of the world. 2. The World-Honored One teaches that the meaning of secularism is ended in the teachings of the Holy One: - It is the cessation of desire, after seeing the truth that desire brings much suffering, completely abandoning desire until attaining the Three Wisdoms. The Blessed One gave examples of the dangers of desire: sex is like a bone..., a piece of meat..., like fruit, like a burning torch..., like a pit of coals.. . In order to end the world, the householder needs to practice eight dharmas: - Abandon killing... - Abandon stealing... - Abandon lying... - Abandon two tongues... - Abandon greed education ... - Giving up anger ... - Abandoning anger ... - Giving up too much pride ... Potaliya respectfully and faithfully accepted the teachings of the World-Honored One. III. TABLE MORE CODE 1. The meaning of secularism : The jobs of family life and social jobs for livelihood are called customs according to popular perception of people; Living the monastic life is called staying away from worldliness. The true meaning of worldly affairs is the mundane mind: such as lust, anger, harm, killing, stealing, lying, and conceit. If the monk has not left the ordinary mind, he still cannot be called a person who avoids the worldly affairs. On the contrary, for those who have achieved the holy life in life, practicing "Four photography" to help the world, they are still those who have been eliminated. secular affairs (like the Hatthaka and Citta lay associations in the Central Sutras) 2. All mortal mind, secular mind is derived from the "Five things" which are basically greed and wrong view (or doubt). Cutting off the "Five things" is the practitioner who has cut off the ordinary mind, the impure mind.
