Chapter Three Lecture on the Third Gathering Two hundred and twenty-eight years since the Perfectly Enlightened One's Nirvana, all the other heretics with a number of sixty thousand are deprived of profit and fame without even receiving food and clothing. . Because of the desire for profit and fame, they shaved their heads, put on their robes, walked around in shelters, and attended activities such as the Uposatha ceremony . They have caused boils, pollution, confusion in the Church; therefore, on the whole island of Jambu, for the past six years the assembly of bhikkhus has not performed the Uposatha practice . At that time, the wise king Asoka (Asoka) had been on the throne for fifteen years. The king intended to purify the Church, so he summoned an assembly of bhikkhus at Asoka Monastery. During that meeting, the elder Moggaliputtatissa, the elder in the assembly, explained the teachings to the king. The king asked all the non-Buddhists, and learned that: " These people are not bhikkhus, these people are heretics ," so he gave white cloths and then expelled them. Then the king said, " Venerable sir, now that the Church is purified, please invite the assembly of bhikkhus to perform the Uposatha practice ," and arranged for protection and returned to the city. The united congregation gathered and performed the Uposatha ceremony . Regarding this, the ancient documents (porāṇā) say: 1. After the Perfect Enlightenment, No Remnant Nirvana, two hundred and twenty-eight years, King Asoka is the lord of this earth . 2. In that land, the protector of the earth studied the orthodox teachings of the Perfectly Enlightened One while residing in the beautiful royal garden for seven days . 3. In those seven days, the lord of the earth sent two yakshas to summon all the bhikkhus in this earth . 4. On the seventh day, the king went to his own splendid monastery and ordered to summon an assembly of bhikkhus without a single missing person . 5. After asking all those pagan wrong views, the lord of the earth recognized and expelled sixty thousand people . 6. Then the lord of the earth said to the elder: “Sir, the assembly has been purified; Therefore, please conduct the Uposatha ceremony." 7. Having arranged for the protection of the congregation, the lord returned to the beautiful city. At that time, the assembly was unified, so the Uposatha ceremony was performed. During that gathering, the Elder Moggaliputtatissa, while refuting other doctrines, presented the Kathāvatthu . He has selected a thousand bhikkhus who are well versed in the Tripitaka and the Dharma, with sharp analytical wisdom, and among the six hundred thousand bhikkhus who have the Three Wisdoms. Just as thera Mahākassapa and thera Yasa have compiled the Dhamma and Discipline analyzed according to the Pitaka, the Sutra, the Body, and the Dharma Aggregate; likewise, while reciting the Dharma and the Vinaya, the elder Moggaliputtatissa purified all the wrongs in the Dhamma and made the third assembly. At the end of the assembly, the great globe vibrated in many ways. This episode ended in nine months. Regarding this, the ancient documents (porāṇā) say: 8. Just as thera Mahākassapa and thera Yasa did the Dharma assembly, so did the elder Tissa. 9. In the hall of that assembly, the elder Tissa presented the work Kathāvatthu denying other doctrines. 10. Thus, the Dharma assembly of a thousand bhikkhus was completed in nine months with the support of King Asoka. 11. After performing the third assembly, which brought many benefits to the world, all the elders lived to the end of their lifespan and entered Nirvana. 12. When knowing the nature of impermanence is suffering and this body is difficult to achieve, the wise should immediately make efforts to achieve the result of permanent immortality.
