DUTIFUL In Buddhism.
Today is the full moon day of the seventh month, the day of filial piety, and is also one of the most important holidays for our Buddhists. Talking about filial piety is referring to the human religion. No matter what religion, everyone must take piety as the root.
Today's full moon day is the day when every son of a Buddha dedicates his or her heart to the one who is born as grandparents, parents, etc., who created us. Parents have successfully born, nurtured, and built for us a life, a life. That worrying mood is not known to end. So the ancients said: "Drops of water always flow down, but never upwards." Parents hundred years old, children eighty years old or more than eighty years old, parents are still worried about their children. That is, parents never forget us, but want us to grow up and prosper. Seeing that people study well, they also want their children to do well. Seeing people doing a successful job, they also want their children to be like that. Want you to always be a good person, a pious person. Those are the wishes of parents.
So, in order to show filial piety so that we can be born, what should we do? In cases where parents have passed away, we should cultivate virtuous virtues for them. If parents fall into evil karma because of their bad karma, we sincerely worship the Three Jewels and earnestly chant scriptures, to transform evil karma to parents through the Buddha's teachings. In the Jizō Sutta, the Jizō Bodhisattva made a vow: if there is a suffering being, he vows not to become a Buddha. As for a being in hell, he is still there to save. Only when all sentient beings cease to suffer, will he take the throne of righteous awareness. With that great vow, he is the great Bodhisattva, often appearing in life, in places of suffering to save sentient beings. Including our many generations of parents.
The Buddha often instructed the great Bodhisattvas to always help sentient beings when they are in need or are depressed in hells, hungry ghosts, animals ... Buddha taught Jizō Bodhisattva: "If there is A man or a woman who has a little good root in the Dharma, you should use your power to support him / her to practice once in a lifetime, not to let them regress. If there is a novice cultivating a bit of good root and must perish in the paths of suffering, he makes them remember reciting the name of the Buddha and use divine power to prevent them from falling into hell, hungry ghosts, and animals.
The reason for having hell, there are places of suffering is because sentient beings create bad karma but empathize them. That bad karma is born from body, mouth, and mind. Since then, we are drawn by things of greed, anger, and delusion. In short, the misery in hell is created by us, not by anyone, imposing on us. This we can also experience to know.
For example, if someone makes us angry, if we are angry with that person, it means that our mind is not secure, hell is present in our hearts. Hell appears, the body is annoyed, cursing mouth is used, followed by evil thoughts or harmful actions. When thinking, doing these things, the mind loses its peace, because being torn up to pollute. Hell is money like that, because sentient beings create it and get inspired. So who do you call for? Pray to Buddha, can Buddha save it? Definitely not, you have to save yourself. So Buddha taught him Jizō, sentient beings who have a little root in Buddhism, he tried to help them develop their wholesome roots, self-fulfillment. If I can complete myself, then naturally, the scout of hell is no longer there.
Obviously the policy of Buddhism is perfect from human beings, right from our hearts. Should have the sentence to cultivate nature is like that.
Buddha continued: “The karma of sentient beings is very great, comparable to Mount Tu Di, as deep as the sea, and can prevent the Holy religion. Therefore, sentient beings do not contempt for any minor wrongdoing, but assume that they are not guilty. After death, there will be retribution, even if it is only a penny, they must bear it ". I repeat: The karma is great, comparable to Mount Tu Di. Because it is so big, we cultivate all the time and still have not become a Buddha. How to become a Buddha if I don't finish my karma? Back to the deep ocean karma, can prevent Holy religion. Karma is too heavy to cultivate, karma is too deep to do anything with merit, virtue and wisdom. So Buddhists must pay attention, take the initiative to change karma, from bad karma to good karma. We are not afraid of karma, but we must know how to move. If you cannot change your career, you must be afraid of it. Because karma has created already, we have to repay the debt.
Buddha again taught: "Therefore, sentient beings do not contempt small and negative things but assume that they are not guilty. After death, they all have retribution, even if they only have to bear it". Even if it only creates a tiny, tiny look, its results are still there. A mind, a thought, a word, a deed, but contradicting the dharma, against the conscience, will bring negative consequences. So Buddhists must be cautious when creating karma. "As close as father and son, each person also follows their own karma and goes on different paths, even if they meet each other, they are not willing to suffer one another". Once a karma has been created, it must bear the consequences of it, no one can give anyone even if they are like father and son. If we do meet, each must follow their own karma. So we should not rely on, thinking that the teachers and the nuns chanting the sutras, we can be super good. If the teachers are not doing anything, what do you think? May anyone help anyone, when I'm so poor? The fact that so. People with money, means, and status can help one or the other. If you are too poor, can't help you? Saying no one hears, there is no wealth and wealth. This is what we fear and worry about. Sentient beings up to now, still rolling about in the streets know how much karma practice. Crime is much, but happiness is poor. The guilt is, because the experience, we see just sitting still for a while, we are wandering about, thinking about more than losing, fame ... And the blessings, good deeds, and blessings we want to preserve but sometimes forget from when I can't remember. Contrary to who, angry with someone, sad someone, five and ten years ago ... it should appear the same, like watching a Video. So we have to take care of ourselves, should not rely on anyone. If Buddha could save it, we would have become Buddhas long ago. No one can save themselves by transforming, correcting, or improving their own mind.
So the Buddha taught Jizō: "Beings, even if they only cause a small amount of cause in the Dharma, you should use your power to make them develop that cause, so that they can achieve the path of results by themselves" . The Buddha did not tell him to bring his ability to make the person a Buddha, a Patriarch, or an Arhat. In the Buddhist house there is no such disaster blessing. Monks and nuns have the responsibility to both practice genuinely and recite the teachings of the Buddha to let all Buddhists listen and practice. May we cannot give you anything.
Through two passages in the Jizō Sutra we show to Buddhists, practice is self-effort. Above we have the Buddha, there are good friends, and there are great Bodhisattvas who always take a close vow to guide us in practice, but we ourselves have to practice, to correct, to be good. Although a lot of good knowledge is always by our side telling us the right things, but we ourselves won't get anything.
Buddhism's policy is to be in yourself. To help a good person, I must be good myself. For example, we want to say ethics, guide Buddhists to practice in accordance with the Dharma of the Buddha, we must first practice the correct Dharma, then we can properly guide Buddhists.
We should not think that reciting Buddha's name is saved by the Buddha. Reciting Buddha's name is thanks to the power of Buddha that helps sinners transform their minds. Thus they get rid of a lifetime of misery. You have to cultivate yourself, have to try, have to work hard. In addition to the blessings of the Buddhas, the aspiration can be fulfilled. It is also important to note the practice merit plus pure transformation, if we are compatible, we will enjoy it fully. If we create merit and we are not pure or transformed, then that merit can only enjoy a small part.
Buddha's predecessor story tells: There was a previous life Buddha was an filial son. When he died, he fell to hell. There he saw beings, on their heads with a red ring of fire, their whole bodies burning like a fire. Those beings cried, cried bitterly. Seeing such a scene, he asked a good prisoner: "What sin did he do and received such a terrible punishment". The devil in prison replied: "It is an filial son. When he lived, he did not listen to his parents' words, made his parents sad, caused unlawful things, contrary to conscience, so now he must pay such karma ”. After hearing he was shaken. Because He himself did not listen to his parents, so if he fell here, surely that ring of fire would come to Him. He added: When will the other end up suffering that sins. "As long as another filial son comes down to replace him, the ring of fire will be over," said the Devil. The devil just finished speaking, the ring of fire flew up and grabbed him on the head, burned his whole body, making Him suffer, crying bitterly. But because he has a deep Buddha humanity, through the punishment of suffering, he immediately made a great vow: "I will bear to replace all this suffering. May in the world do not have any filial children falling here ”. As soon as he finished making his great vow, the red ring of fire on his head immediately disappeared. He escaped from hell. We find filial piety so important. As soon as he finished making his great vow, the red ring of fire on his head immediately disappeared. He escaped from hell. We find filial piety so important. As soon as he finished making his great vow, the red ring of fire on his head immediately disappeared. He escaped from hell. We find filial piety so important.
Buddha has always taught us to strive to practice in order to improve ourselves and improve our parents and relatives. Do not be able to rely on Buddhism. Even though Buddha waits, but we do not raise our hands for Buddha to pull it up, we can never be saved. Which hand out how? Buddha says: Remember Buddha, recite Buddha's name, don't recite anything else. Do not recite fame and money in the world, but just recite Buddha's name. That is to be enlightened, awake, and discerning, then Buddha can pull his hand up. We have not done that yet so Buddha waited forever but still no one to pull up.
The same goes for meditation practice or Pure Land practice. If you do not wake up, be wise, practice yourself, and overcome your own shortcomings, no matter how much you do when you say meditation, you won't get any work at the temple. It is important that we have to make our own efforts, try to cultivate, how to achieve results, the repayment of parents is not difficult.
Another story in Jizō. There is a daughter Brahmin, but she has great devotion to the Three Jewels. She practiced under the guidance of the monks and nuns, in accordance with the true, enlightened path of Buddha. But her mother did not accept. Because she is a non-believer, she is disrespectful and is always opposed to a daughter's cultivation. Therefore, her three karma, body, speech, and mind became more and more evil. Knowing that, the daughter could not advise her mother. She is very miserable, so she makes more effort to practice to dedicate merit to her mother, hoping to transform her mother. But because of her disrespect, destroying the Three Jewels of hers was too deep, so when she died, she fell into hell. Knowing that her mother would fall to a bad path, during the forty-nine days, she earnestly practiced spiritual practice and made offerings to the Three Jewels to dedicate merit to her mother, hoping to save her from suffering.
While sincerely doing the deeds of merit, reciting the name of Buddha, one day she dreamed of herself coming to a beach, under the boiling sea. Standing on the shore are people holding pitchfork, pitchfork, horns with antlers, and fierce faces. But thanks to special powers, she should not be afraid of standing near these people. Under the boiling water, there are many fierce animals such as tigers, leopards, dogs ... of copper, iron ... and there are many beings diving in it. They were stabbed by the people holding the blades and thrown into the boiling water for the ferocious animals to chew, swallow and play. The scene was terrifying. She looked and asked the nearest person, "This is where the scene is so disgusting." The devil replied: "This is A Bhikkhu hell, also known as the No-Cockroach Hell". She asked: "Which criminals, creating what karma that fell here?" The Devil replied: "Those in the world do not believe in the Three Jewels, killing sentient beings,
She added: "Due to what conditions do you stand here and why am I here?" The devil happily replied: “This place has two instances to reach. One is due to karma, the other is due to spiritual practice. She is a true practitioner, so she came here without fear. She is not afraid standing near me, even daring to ask questions below, so she knows she has great merit ". The devil asked again, "What are you here for?" "I went to find my mother," she said. My mother did not believe in the Three Jewels while living, creating evil. So after passing away my mother will probably be led to these places of suffering. I have faithfully, earnestly practice and recite the name of the Buddha. Thanks to that grace and virtue, I have come to this place to find her and save her ". The demon asked, "What's your mother's name?" She said her mother's full name and her father's name died first. The demon immediately greeted her with a respectful hand and said: Those sinners three days ago were born into a peaceful world. Not only those two were born, but all sentient beings in misery as you see here, that day were also born.
The girl was indefinitely happy and immediately made a vow like this: “I vow forever to practice according to the Dharma, forever replacing all beings to suffer all kinds of suffering. May all beings do not destroy the Three Jewels, do not create karma to fall into this hell of suffering ”.
Thus in Buddhism it comes to saving suffering. But the policy of saving suffering is that you must have merit by yourself, you must practice rightly, you must transform, to be able to do it. We have the right to pray, but it is mainly about practice. Due to the practice of merit, the new prayer has an answer. If you just vow completely and refuse to practice, there will be no result.
Tu how? Think bad, don't think, say nonsense, don't say, don't do bad thing. Whether at the market, at home, or anywhere you can cultivate. Having conditions, I go to the temple, buy incense sticks to worship. Without conditions, people cursed at home. If we abstain, we cultivate. Folk have a saying: A sentence that abstains nine sentences. Do not think patience is endurance. Whoever thinks long-suffering is endurance, that is understanding in a trivial way. Patience is a ring. Forbearance is great, powerful, not humiliating. If people swear at us and we curse back, it will lead to fighting. But there are people who fight, there are people who lose. People who eat, the loser cannot solve it, then add some local security men to prove it. If the problem is not resolved anymore, it must be taken to court, wasting money ... all kinds of troublesome troubles. Should say a sentence with nine good sentences. This practice can be practiced by anyone.
Next, I talk about generating bodhicitta. Generating bodhicitta means generating enlightened mind. We all have that mind ready. Buddha taught: "Bodhicitta is the master path leading to wisdom, a stream of celestial beings that can be washed away, a carriage carrying Bodhisattvas, the door to the actions of the Bodhisattvas". Bodhi mind means consciousness. That mind is the mind of the Buddha, the bodhisattva mind. To develop that mind is to open the great door, to enlightenment and liberation.
After understanding the religion, we Buddhists must go forward, to generate bodhicitta. Because we cannot pray to Buddha for us to become a Buddha. That I pray
the mind becomes a Buddha, generates an enlightened mind. That mind I have available, I vow to realize that mind of myself. Buddhas are born wanting to show us that mind. So what to do if you want to develop that mind? All wandering, preoccupied, and dark delusions have to be eliminated, and we eliminate all of them, for Bodhicitta to emerge. No need to look anywhere. To do that, we are constantly alert, discerning, re-illuminating ourselves, not running after the outside. Who invites us to a world with a thousand-year-old lifespan, or take a step from one mountain to another, or drink a thousand-year-old single spirit ... Let's go. Long life is very tiring. Just live in sobriety, insight, live with peaceful mind, liberation, Buddha mind, Bodhi mind.
In the Dharma Flower Sutra, the Buddha said: The purpose of the Buddhas to be born is to show all sentient beings their own Buddha views.
The Surangama Sutra, Buddha taught: The purpose of the Buddhas' birth is to teach all of us that we have a pure, liberating mind, a Buddha's mind, a true mind, not something that wanders about. out.
Again in the sutras, the Buddha also said that Bodhi mind is the dwelling place of Tam Muoi, the garden of enjoying the blissful Dharma, the safe place of the world, the resting place of the Bodhisattva.
We want to lean on, be close to Buddha, we must have the Tam Muoi. Tam Muoi means her concentration. For example, sitting here and hearing someone say my name or the name of a loved one is gaining piety, that is not concentration. But if you listen to, listen to the sound, the car is running, the speaker ... but you are still in concentration, don't let the sound guide you. So there is right concentration, there is Tam Muoi.
Here I tell a story in the Zen house.
There is an ascetic monk, often sitting idle. So few people dare to study with him. Only a young, intelligent disciple, usually close to the monk. He realized that the little uncle could be used later, so he served as an attendant. It is strange that he does not listen to the teacher. The teacher sat in meditation day and night, on the contrary he lay down all the time. At first, seeing that he was still young, it could not help him sit a lot, so he let me lie down. But lying down must also have time to sit up, do not lie forever. However, he slept but very awake. When he moved, he started to wake up, very alert. One day, seeing that the disciple has grown up but kept lying down, the teacher gets angry, rebuking: "You will become a snake forever if you lie down." The disciple replied, "Master just sitting and dying will turn into toads." Right that statement, the enlightened teacher. From a long time of endeavor, he only needed a small charm and became enlightened. The teacher like that, Having such a student, achieving each other is also very special. So in the Zen house you are in a mindful mind.
In a nutshell, regardless of the circumstances, whether we are a monk or a monk, we must also pay attention to our practice. First, it is for our own benefit, and later to pay back parents' great respect. Bringing the merit of their practice to dedicate to parents to generate devotion to the Three Jewels, leave evil to do good, and be born forever in a Buddhist house.
Buddha taught all sentient beings that Buddha would become. So we have to make ourselves and our parents generate Bodhicitta, practice to attain Buddhahood to deserve a Tathagata disciple.
On the occasion of Vu Lan's filial piety, on the fourth day of September 2, 2020, we wish all Buddhists, present and absent today, remember that we all have Buddha nature and have the knowledge of Buddha. . We are Buddha will become. So we have to develop the available Buddha nature in ourselves. Wish you become Buddhas, we also become Buddhas. We all become Buddhas.END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).GOLDEN AMITABHA MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THICH CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.10/9/2020.
