Many times waking up in the middle of the night, seeing the sleeping position of the Buddha, this disciple was extremely wondering. He lay on his right side, his left hand extended according to his body, his right hand rested his head.

Ajanta Caves are a complex of Buddhist rock caves dating from the 2nd century BC to 480 AD in Aurangabad district, Maharashtra state, India.

In these caves, in the last cave you will find a sleeping Buddha statue: He lies on his right side, his left hand is extended along his body, his right hand is his head. That sleeping position is called the lion's sleeping posture, because the sleeping lion is also often inclined and does not move.

At a time when Buddha was still alive, he also slept in this position, even at night. He did not turn to any other posture, nor did he move even an inch from his original position.

Among the followers following the Buddha, one of the disciples who is said to be closest to the Buddha is also his cousin, named Ananda. Because he was with the Buddha a lot, Ananda had witnessed the sleeping posture of the Buddha many times and was very curious.

Many times, in the middle of the night, while sleeping, Ananda suddenly woke up. Looking at the Buddha, Ananda saw the Buddha still lying in the same position as when he started sleeping, not changing at all.

The story of the Buddha's sleeping posture is one of the well-known Buddhist stories, with more meaningful layers of thought, the more we draw our own values.

One day, Ananda could not resist the curiosity, and although the Buddha was sleeping, Ananda decided to go to his place, shaking him up to look for answers.

"Lord Buddha, please excuse the disciples, for you have walked, preached all day and are so tired that I wake you up in the middle of the night like this. However, this question has followed me for a long time, and if today I do not receive the answer, I will always be wondering, ”Ananda timidly said.

Buddha opened his eyes, motioned for Ananda to continue speaking.

Ananda went on: "I have followed You for 20 years, I have waited so long to ask this. How can He maintain a single sleeping posture, undeterred throughout the night? Do you really sleep, or do you always have to try to maintain that posture?

Because to yourself, maintaining a posture is impossible. During the night you will constantly change from one position or position to another. I can't sleep in a single position all night. ”

Upon hearing Ananda's question, the Buddha slowly explained: "I have found a position suitable for me so I will maintain it and have no intention of changing. When we sleep, our body rests but our mind is still awake. And you cannot lie still with a position because you are still looking for a suitable position.

You said you could not lie still with one position for the whole night, but the problem is not that you turn, but because your mind is not really peaceful. The mind is not peaceful, the body cannot be still.

And I have overcome it already. When I go to sleep, my mind is free of anything. This body lying down looks like a dead body. Have you seen any corpses that can move yet? ”.

Ananda finished listening, completely convinced by the Buddha's explanation, smiled and drew a lesson for himself.

Comment:  The story of the Buddha's sleeping posture is one of the well-known Buddhist stories, with many meaningful layers, the more we contemplate, the more we draw our own values.

Sleeping is a time when we rest, so many people think that whatever they like, just lie in that style without thinking much, nor know the sleeping position affects their mind or health.

However, according to the Buddhist scriptures, interpreting the correct posture is also a way of cultivation. The lying posture reflects the mood and profoundly affects the tranquility of the body. According to the Buddha, there are four ways of sleeping: lying on your back, lying on your stomach, lying on your left side and lying on your right side.

1. Lying on the back often express desire, difficult to regain the mind of craving, delusion more than other postures. It is also easy to create indiscretion, especially when sleeping can lose majesty.

2. Lying on your stomach is a pattern of showing torment, suffering, easy to have nightmares, and it is difficult for the person lying down to feel comfortable.

3. Lying on your left side reflects the mood of the majority of those who desire longevity.

According to scientific studies, lying on your stomach, lying on your back and lying on your left side negatively affects the circulatory system, organs and bones. Therefore, practitioners often do not lie in these three postures.

4. Lying on the right side, legs on top of each other like a lion is a stately meeting posture, one of the virtues of a practitioner, which is also the way of the Buddha: This is a lying posture, creating So peace and security for the body and especially the mind always achieve awakening.

In terms of science, in this position, the five organs will be in the right position to help blood circulation better. This is a quick way to eliminate fatigue and help you recover health after a good night's sleep. In addition, this posture also helps the spine to stretch, reducing pressure due to the weight from the upper body.

The old nursing home thought that lying on the right side and letting the legs and arms shrink slightly would be good for the body. Modern science also proves that with this posture, the body muscles will relax the most, helping you have a better, deeper sleep.END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).GOLDEN AMITABHA MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THICH CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.20/7/2020.
