We live in this world no one is completely clean. 
Buddha used to teach: "Every mortal descended to the three realms, rolling in six paths, then no one species is completely clean, no one end all sin." 
Indeed, this world has been called the mundane world, how can it be clean? It is often said "in a round ball is round, in a long tube"; then in the dust must be dusty. The dust of life has long ago covered our bodies, our heads, into our lungs and our lungs. It makes us blurred in sight and cannot see the right path; It makes us heartbroken, unable to see the true mind. 
If we want to live forever in filth, want to immerse ourselves in sin, then we don't say anything. But when we want to be clean and relaxed, to let go of our sins for the sake of lightness and relaxation, of course, we have to find a way to get rid of the dust and eliminate the sins. In Buddhism, the method of elimination is called penance. 
B. BACKGROUND 
I. DEFINITIONS 
The word "Sam", in Sanskrit, is called Samma; The translation ship is "So foul". Sutra said: "Samples of repetition of money shields, Excessive remittance of foreign exchange". That is, Sam is the first to repent, and the remainder is to leave the error later. If using a word of repentance or a repentance word is not enough meaning, so the old ancestors combined the two words into the word "repentance", translated in Vietnamese as "repentance and error". So in the word penance has the meaning of repentance, remorse for past mistakes, regardless of how long it is, and now until later on, I vow not to relapse again. If we know that the old mistake is wrong, now we will atone for the error, but later still do it again, it is not a true repentance in Buddhism. 
II. WAYS TO EXCHANGE 
1. Repenting wrong.  
It is true that the word penance is Buddhism's proper noun. When it is called repentance, it is not a penance again. But for the sake of expressing, let us temporarily use those two words to generalize the ways of atoning in the world or in the pagans. 
Worldly people, when they have sinned against their grandparents and villages, often use betel nuts, or pigs, chickens and money to apologize and apologize. Sometimes people use the form of "deference to public service," but when they commit crimes with the court or in the military, for example. The form of redemption also has a good place, but it is not perfect and still crude. It applies only to dealing with the outside, but in the case of the sins that occur within our hearts, the very subtle, very deep sins, it is difficult to apply the form of speaking. on. 
In the pagans, people also use many forms of redemption: such as having the religion use animal blood to baptize with the gods; having directed the religion to bathe in rivers and streams that are considered sacred by all sin; Some religions bring their goods to ask the gods to confess their sins; religiousism advocates asceticism, such as beating the body, fasting hunger, suffering from heat, lying on the thorns to taste honey to get rid of sin. 
Such ways of atoning are wrong. Sin is psychological, there is no form. So how can one take material things like water, blood, products or bodies to purify sin? 
2. True repentance. 
The Buddha taught that sin is created by the mind of a person, no one has the right to reward or punish. Those who sow bad seeds will eat bad fruits, and those who grow precious seeds will enjoy good fruits. Sin has been created from the heart, so must be compassionate. The words are clear, rational, and experimental. So we want to end the sin, must follow the true repentance of Buddhism that practice. In Buddhism, there are 4 following penitential dharma, there is dharma belonging to things, dharma belongs to reason: 
- The method of penance (the) 
- The Prime Minister repents (the) 
- Redemptive penance (the) 
- Infertility repentance (reason) 
a) The practice of penance : This penance of penance belongs to, must set up a precepts and occasionally purify the Sangha, so called the work. When entering the colon, we must honestly express our sins in a sincere way, with deep will to repent and vow not to relapse again. A sincere repentance like that, when the world is pure, that is all sin. 
b) The Prime Minister repents : This dharma belongs to and is harder than the previous dharma. The Buddha-dharma, this is the penance of contemplation, for highly qualified spiritual practitioners, or where there is no Sangha, or yes, but it is not pure. In order to practice this practice, one must come before the Buddha or Bodhisattva statue, sincerely worship, present the sins committed, and vow to repent. Doing so from 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 49 days, and until you see the general: such as seeing glory, precious lotus, seeing Buddha, Bodhisattva to rub his head, etc. . 
c) The name of the penitent : The name of the penance of the penitent also belongs to, prepared by the Immoral Mage of the Song Dynasty in China. He withdrew 53 Buddha titles in the "Fivefold Buddha" Sutta, from the Buddha of Prussia to the Buddha Shakyamuni Buddha, and drew 35 Buddhist titles in the Sutta, "Shakyamuni Buddha". Buddha Amitabha's body, after adding to the Samantabhadra shelf, constitutes a repentance rite, a total of 108 prostrations, to imply minus 108 afflictions. 
This rite of repentance, if anyone is even revered, will eradicate the defilements and sins created in the present life as well as many lives in the past. The Buddha Bhikkhu-Ba-Thi said: "If any sentient being hears the title of these 53 Buddhas, then hundreds of thousands of lives will not fall into three evil paths." Buddha Shakyamuni said: "In the old days, when the Buddha Dieu Quang was born, I became a monk in order to live a life of Dharma, because I heard the name of these 53 Buddhas and sincerely worshiped me, avoiding the suffering in the path of life and death. reincarnation many lives ". And after 35 Buddha titles, from the Buddha Shakyamuni to the Buddha Buu-Lien-Hoa-Thien-Head-Ta-La-Tho-Vuong, in the Buu Tich Sutta, "If all sentient beings, or guilty of five rebellions or cruelty, for countless lifetimes, cannot confess, just claim the title of 35 Buddhas and worship, so many sins will be eliminated. " 
The names of the Buddhas have such inconceivable merit, so the Immovable Dharma Master has just created them to perform the penitential rite. Phap Hong repentance nowadays, most temples follow. Later, Mr. Tu Van, a magus, because of his weak or unfamiliarity, made a penitential ritual, very compact and meaningful, also known as the mini-penance method, so that the Buddhists would never stop. The day can repent of your sins. 
d) Infertility of repentance : This dharma belongs to the reason of repentance, is very high and difficult, frustrating and can only practice. There are 2 ways to fix: 
-  Contemplation of infertility : It means observing one's own mind, not giving birth. As in the Sutta Kim Cang says: "The mind of the past cannot be, the mind is not present, nor is the mind of the future". Consistent in three times are not mind, then expectation from nowhere that, if not expected, then the crime is not. Sutra says: "Sin comes from the mind that arises from the mind that ceases. If this mind is not born, then there is no sin, that is true penance." 
-  Consistent method of infertility : It means observing the true form (feet of nature) of non-living things. The word "real minister", means that the general is not born, does not kill, does not lie; Since ancient times, it has often been like that, without being changed by time or space, throughout the past, so-called real generals (true generals). It is also called feet as or feet mind ... When the real generals are received, then the prime minister is no longer available. At that time, the (false) sins, no longer rely on anything that exists. In the Samantabhadra Sutta it says: "If you want to repent, you must contemplate the truths of all dhammas, then the sin will completely eradicate." 
III.  DEVELOP A NEW HEALTH TO TELL THE OLD CRIME 
Having completed the repentance ceremony, you need to develop many blessings to eliminate the old sins. 
1. Commenting on the past evil has passed. 
Our old sins are numerous, so to speak. Our lives continue to communicate with each other from generation to generation, like an endless string. And then in every life, from birth to death, from death to birth, we go on creating more sins forever. From one bad thing to another, from small mistakes to big crimes, that momentum keeps growing into a force called karma, leading us into the path of suffering, delusion, That is the flow of life and death that we are feeling. In the Sutra Pitaka, Venerable Sage Bodhisattva says, "If the sins of sentient beings take the form, all nothingness cannot be contained." Indeed, the sins of sentient beings pile up from thousands of lives, passed down through time, by genetics, customs, habits, etc. Such as our greed, we are born, no one teaches Where we are, yet we still know! Nor did anyone tell us to be angry, but when we met something against our will, we scowled and yelled. Those bad qualities have once been with the body and very profound, difficult to eliminate. In the sutta they are called "the sentence of defilement", or "possession of the seed", meaning the seeds have a long time. These bad seeds also create conditions for other sins, which in the text called "discriminating afflictions" or "filial seed initiation", meaning newly infected seeds due to the influence of the times and customs. , dominant customs. "Distinguishing defilements is easy to eradicate, but" disturbing emotions "are very difficult to eradicate. They are like owls, deeply rooted in the roots; if the gardener despises it, it is not easy to clear the soil. Those bad qualities have once been with the body and very profound, difficult to eliminate. In the sutta they are called "the sentence of defilement", or "possession of the seed", meaning the seeds have a long time. These bad seeds also create conditions for other sins, which in the text called "discriminating afflictions" or "filial seed initiation", meaning newly infected seeds due to the influence of the times and customs. , dominant customs. "Distinguishing defilements is easy to eradicate, but" disturbing emotions "are very difficult to eradicate. So we should not repent and repentance, get it! We must do so: 
a) Those bad qualities gradually weaken, due to the power of sincerity and determination. 
b) Then stop all bad properties from rebirth. 
If you want to get rid of them, if you don't have the proper method, it's like putting stones on the grass: It lies flat temporarily, but when you move the stone, it will grow stronger than before. The proper method of penance is: Develop virtue, to eliminate the old sin. 
2. Development of well-being. 
Each of us does not always contain evil nature. If the bad character has existed forever, the good nature also has the beginninglessness. We each have the Buddha nature that is the germ of all goodness, that germ has been buried under the layers of desire and delusion. Now we want to eliminate desire, so we have to create conditions, for the Buddha germ to blossom, to flower, to bear fruit. The conditions for the development of Bodhi germ are virtues such as: Compassion, joy, generosity, morality, patience, diligence, etc. If we develop those good qualities, of course, bad qualities. No more land to grow. 
C. CONCLUSION 
As we have seen in the preceding paragraphs, worldly people or religions all have ways to prevent error. However, only the penitential method of Buddhism can eradicate sin, due to the place of taking the evil, good and evil, as the essential. 
Of the four penitential dharma of Buddhism, there is the dharma of dharma, there is dharma of justice, there is high dharma, there is dhamma. So it depends on the root and circumstances of each person that applies. The upper house, the consistent French penitent infertility. Those who do not meet the convenient situation, do not have a herd, do not meet the monks, then use the method of the Prime Minister to repent. People who are convenient to have the pureland, high virtue, use the legal method of penance. If we still find ourselves guilty of heavy offenses, and find them difficult to practice, then every night, or in the vegetarian meals and the day of the aspiration, arbitrarily come to the temple or at home to bow to the mind of the Repentant Hong, or Little repentance is also good. 
In the Buddhist repentance methods, although there is prostration, kneeling, worship, but not to pray to begged for forgiveness. In that prostration, the litmus, contains so many meanings and benefits. Still kneeling and kneeling, especially in the legal form of penance, it is quite exhausting, but in physical fatigue, there is spiritual joy, in the outer appearance there is an inner meaning. Indeed, despite many prostrations, recite long, but still not out of the following purposes: 
1. Find practical ways to cleanse people's hearts, all faults in the present life, but also eliminate crimes in the past. 
2. Find ways to develop noble conduct, following the wise examples of sages. 
In a nutshell, the methods of Buddhist penance, if practiced properly, will yield the following valuable results: 
- Do develop honesty. 
- Cultivate moral determination in the elimination of bad nature. 
- Stop being guilty, be happy. 
- Mau won to liberate happily. 
Through the Buddhist penance, people can convert their hearts better. Through the method of penance, people can make individual life happy, and social life is peaceful and peaceful.
