A. INTRODUCTION
Zen Buddhism belongs to both Mahayana and Hinayana. Like many other sects in Buddhism, the first enlightenment of Zen Buddhism was still Buddha. Before him, the meditative contemplation of the pagans was not nonexistent. But to Him, the new method of meditation reached its ultimate destination. As we all know through his history, Buddha became a monk for many years after his renunciation and asceticism, but has yet to attain the desired result. He told the director that he must not go far but to find in his lucid wisdom. And since then, always in 49 days and nights under the Bodhi tree, he sat in meditation to meditate until the evening of the 8th of the second lunar month, at the beginning of tomorrow, when he "proved his mind," he attained enlightenment. threads. It was an unprecedented samadhi, opening the door to an extremely effective method of Bodhiism. And from then on, a separate sect was formed. That is Zen Buddhism.
Why is it called Zen? Zen religion is a sect of Buddhism taking the practice of meditation as the basis for austerities.
The word "Zen" is due to the word "meditation-na", a Sanskrit word, transliterated in Chinese and translated as meaning determinant (self-determination). Combining Sanskrit and Chinese, the word Meditation.
There are places to solve: The word "Zen", formerly translated as "thinking", now translated as "Pure Land". Thinking means to contemplate, study, infer the objects of the mind (that is, the mind). "Pure Land" means that the mind of tranquility does not allow the arising of thoughts of thought (ie only) so that the mind can be clarified.
The original Sanskrit word "Samadhi" is Samadhi, the Chinese transliteration is samadhi, meaning to focus the mind on a single scene that does not allow scattering.
Combining the two words Meditation and Concentration, we have a general meaning as follows: Focusing the thought on a single object, not distracting, letting the mind be quiet, the mind being clear, strong, to observing and thinking rationally.
The meditation method has two ways:
1. Study on meditation, in order to clear the mind of awareness, enlightenment and enlightenment, should be called "Join meditation", such as consulting the first sentence (sayings of meditation), etc.
2. Focusing ideas to contemplate to clarify the truth about a problem, such as impure, compassionate shop, etc., so it is also called "visualization".
There are places called tu "just shop" or practice "hue." Just suspend the delusion, do not give boot, ie. Quan is contemplating to unravel a problem, that is Hue.
"Only" is loving, but "Dinh" is the result.
"Quan" is Nhan, and "Hue" is the result.
PRESENTATION OF MEDITATION
All sentient beings, after many lifetimes, have to drift in the sea of samsaric suffering because of ignorance.
Why is there enchanting ignorance? We daily lose-heart (1), green-sex (2), bowl style (3), agitated, make our mind to be obscured; as well as a lamp blown by the wind, which is not clear, to destroy the darkness around and to illuminate the landscape. Our minds are never disturbed by the wind of the ceiling (4). Because the mind lamp wobbles (not intended), the light of wisdom cannot radiate; and the light of wisdom does not shine, so it is not possible to tear apart the darkness of ignorance around and not illuminating the truth of the universe.
So practitioners want to know the truth of the universe, want to be mindful of becoming Buddha, they must destroy the darkness of ignorance. Want to destroy the ignorance of darkness, practitioners must make their wisdom lights clear. If you want, you must meditate. The mind has concentration, which generates wisdom. Wisdom has arisen to eliminate the ignorance of darkness, and the new mind of enlightenment into Buddha.
Just hearing the policy of Zen-ton, we see nothing new, and thought it was so easy; but when practicing it is not so easy. Meditation practice, on the other hand, is very difficult, often led by the good and good of knowledge.
B. TYPES OF MEDITATION
Meditation has many types, many things. There is secondary, evil, deep, shallow, secondary meditation of the heathen, secondary meditation of ordinary people, secondary meditation of Hinayana, secondary meditation of Mahayana.
Listen to Mr. Sun Tzu Zen teacher taught: "... Who wants to pray Saint-director, must practice meditation." Chon-nature is not dirty and clean, holy and divine. But meditation has been shallow and deep, once frustrated:
- Deviant people, attachments are wrong, prefer the upper realms, bored lower realms that meditation is pagan meditation;
- The Chief Justice is compassionate, but also uses the upper realms of boredom to practice meditation, which is divine meditation;
- The person who knows the reason of "selfless" and meditates clearly is Hinayana meditation;
- The enlightened person is entitled "self, the law is not" but meditation, Mahayana meditation;
- The self-enlightened mind, this ancient capital is pure, no negativity, full of non-smuggled wisdom, that mind is Buddha, ultimately no different; y according to that mind meditation is paramount meditation, also known as "feet like tam black"
Because there are many different types of meditation, before we want to practice properly, we need to know briefly the meditation practices, in order not to get lost in dangerous ways.
I. FOREIGN MEDIA
In this pagan meditation, we would like to refer to the pagan types of meditation, such as Taoism, Brahminism, hypnotic practices, and devious meditations, for the purpose of not being righteous.
Why is it called chon Chanh? According to the Buddhist concept, what actions are not aimed at cultivating the mind nature, eradicating defilement and defilement, to pray for the liberation of samsara, are not the Chief Justice. Based on the above concept that critique, the evil practices of meditation or the types of meditation of the pagan are not righteous; because those who practice these types of meditation only aim to pray for a long life, to be healthy, to be miraculously transformed into the world, to perform miracles, mysteries to tempt, fascinate people. , or be a fairy to enjoy the pleasures of the fairy ...
Because they use the non-righteous mind, cultivate the non-righteous method, aim for short-sightedness, superficiality, and are motivated by disturbing emotions of greed, hatred and delusion, their types of meditation cannot last. dry and perfect. First, let's talk about the evil practices of meditation.
1. Evil meditation: Read the old story books, we often hear about animals like: white snake, fox, fox, monkey, apes ... long-term cultivation in the deep forest deep mountains, finally also have magical powers, transformation. But their purpose is to pray for many rules to be close to women, to harm the people, to capture the souls of the honest people, to satisfy their nature. These are evil goblins, which today are hard to believe in the eyes of scientists. But perhaps the ancients wanted to create devilish goblin stories like that, to imply that animals, if cultivated for a long time, might be more magical than humans. But because they lacked kindness and kindness, the greater the magic was, the greater the disaster.
We also often hear sorcerers training female spirits (skulls). They also focus their thoughts, practice concentration, and when they succeed, and when they succeed, they are also sent down by infantry soldiers, told by ghosts for past, future things, etc. , no less work.
It is also due to spiritual practice, but by using evil mind, it is called evil meditation, and the result is harmful to oneself and the people of society.
Let us listen to the Buddha's teaching of Ananda in the Shurangama Sutta about the evil ways of meditation:
"... Ananda! If the monk meditates without obscene, then decided to fall into the magic, vexed as a ghost, angry as a ghost, frustrated as a witch. Since its root is lewd, then how can we stop being from samsara? ”...
"... Ananda! If a monk meditates without killing the mind, then he will only fall into Shintoism; exasperated into the great demonic force, the disloyalty who acted as a pilgrim and demonic generals, frustrated as a pilgrimage to Satan and the demons ... "
"... Ananda! If a monk meditates without eliminating the mind of robbery, then he falls into the wrong path; Upset became the goblin, annoyed as the devil, frustrated as deviant people, the evil spirits entered (simultaneously) ... ".
2. Meditation of Taoism: According to the teachings of the Tao religion, such as the Huynh Dinh sutta, or the Tanh network Khue, etc. , qi and deity. Tinh, Qi is the owner of the body; God is the owner of life. Lust sexual desire is too strong, the temperament is worn out: the worn-out temperament is obscured by the dark body, the man loses awareness. Therefore, it is necessary to subtract sex to nourish and train the body to be open and discovered.
“The prophet believed that all the human body's armor had acupuncture points, that is, yin and yang air vents; acupuncture points at the foot of the foot called chi negative; vented at the top of the head is natural. Air goes up is positive air, goes down is negative air.
The first practitioner cultivates the lost syllable, leaving only the pure positive air to go to the top of the head, which is magical and enlightened. Why must eliminate negative air? Because the sound of air is the air, making it heavy, dark, lustful, lustful. As long as the spirit is lost, the Spirit is the most lucid movement, also the communion with heaven and earth, stuck. Therefore, the mortal is still heavy in negative energy, and the first is only pure positive gas (5) ”.
In order to train qi, the first practitioner has many practices that are almost like meditation, meaning sitting in a peaceful place, and practicing such practices as: "Sitting on the ground", "Assigning the celestial pillar," ”, Etc.
In short, those who follow this religion, if they persevere in concentrating on the mind, train "refined" the "qi", train the "qi" of the "god", after having mastered it, the five miraculous transformations chemistry. They became elves, able to fly astray world. Or they collect water from the moon, practice spirit to cure diseases or drink for everlasting life, into First Heaven.
These fairies, unfortunately, we cannot see them today, so we are not sure whether they will or not. But even with that, in theory, these people have not been fully gonorrhea (defilements and possession are illegally), so when disturbances arise, they will fall down, as in the case of Mr. Uất-Đầu-Lâm -Phất, or Mr. Tô -Gi-Tiên-Nhân.vv. Moreover, even if they train their own body to be immortal, they cannot be satisfied, because this body is the four great false heroes, all must be governed by impermanence, cannot live forever. It is a skin that contains impure objects, so no matter how hard to nourish it, it will eventually disintegrate. Therefore, austerities must see it as a raft brought across the river, when crossing the river, should not pity the raft but would not go ashore.
In Qui Nguyen Truc only, there is a story of Mr. Lu Dong Dong Tan, a student of Tien Hon Chung Ly. After losing the spell to the defeated Huynh Long Venerable, he left Tien to follow Buddhism. The reason for this Buddha's head is because Mr. Lu Dong Tan found himself using the wrong mind and went the wrong way. Therefore, he wrote the following poem to say his mistake:
Original:
Gas disclaimer of spokes, stimulus
As long as the central pineapple pineapple dumb
From the most spare Huynh Long Hau
The sense of spare parts using the mind
Translate:
Abandon the floor of panacea throwing the harp
I now regret the gold saliva (6)
Since meeting the venerable Huynh Long
I only knew before using eccentricity.
(See the first book of Dong Dong Tan Buddha)
3. Practicing Yoga (Yoga): Yoga is an Indian noun, the root is in the word Yuj; Ships translated as Yoga, literally "put yourself under a yoke"; figuratively "binding the mind and body to a strict rule" restraining itself according to a special discipline, whose goal is to focus the whole body and mind to one with the nature of heaven and earth.
Yoga is also called Indian air-training, almost like the Taoist air-training. According to Yoga, there are many graves in the human body; seven of them are from the anus to the top of the head. The seven points are sprawled along the backbone, and there is an up and a down link. Because of the delusion and the desire to obscure the seven points that are hindered, making the "feet" from under "fire" (the anus) can not be up. Especially because the body does not exercise, the spine is bent, so the points are more likely to get stuck. So in order for the queen (ie the divine power in humans) to pass through the acupuncture points, up to the top of the head, you have to focus on training the spine to expand, the joints are clear and straight.
To achieve the aforementioned purpose, yogic practitioners must practice many postures, such as the "back stretching" posture, the "plow blade" posture, the "banana planting" posture (venting head downwards, backward leg upwards in the sky). ), to make it easier for the runner to reach the top of the head.
Today Yoga is popularized throughout Europe and America, almost as a movement. Most people consider it a fitness method, to train the body to be healthy, to be wise, to calculate and work effectively. Some people go further, want to practice Yoga to live long, young forever, beyond the bonds of the body full of lust, to escape the worries, fears everyday and live a life peaceful, free. There is another class of people who hope that Yoga will make them discover the hidden powers hidden in humans and make them extraordinary characters, with miraculous transformations, miracles. They also focus the mind, focusing attention as the meditation practices; In addition, they also practice in a very miserable manner, torturing the body, making it endure extreme challenges, such as sun exposure,
These people, when cultivating to a high level, also performed miracles, such as cutting knives without breaking, piercing without puncture, chewing bottles, drinking acid okay, lying down, sleeping for three months without eating or drinking. etc ..
But no matter how much they succeed, it is impossible to escape outside the mundane world of willow and death and clear awareness.
4. Practice hypnosis: This is also a way of meditation of the pagan, now very popular in the world. The principle of this cultivation method is also to apply and focus the mind in one place so that the spirit has the power to make things happen. The practitioner hypnotized, at first sitting still, staring at a black dot painted on the wall, letting the mind focus on it, but no longer paying attention to an object around. They sit for hours like that, when the spirit is no longer distracted, and have the power to convince others that they succeed. Good hypnotherapists can use hypnosis to cure illnesses or mislead others to do extraordinary things, such as going to another country to visit relatives, retelling the past or a precursor to a others, etc.
In short, thanks to the mental energy that has been concentrated into strength, hypnotists can force others to do strange things according to their own will. But because of the advantage, the mind is not righteous, just greedy for the occult, the mysteries of the outside, do not worry except for negativity, smuggling, cultivate the inner nature, to be enlightened, is the right path. By the time when the defilements of gonorrhea, or the inheritance of greed, etc., were released, the magical powers and magic effects were lost. That's why the Buddha taught his disciples: " Enlightenment is directed, and naturally there will be magical powers. If the miracle is not enlightened, then the magic power will be lost .
II. PHU THIEN
Phàm phu meditation is also called the mundane meditation. The reason called the ordinary world or meditation world is because these methods of meditation have not been able to take the practitioner out of the three realms, have not been able to see the result, but are still circling within the ordinary world or the world. The dharma s, such as the Fourth Jhana, the Fourth Jhana, etc., belong to the ordinary meditator.
1. The Fourth Jhana is the 4 stages of meditative meditation by ordinary people, going from the boring place of the gross joy to pure and subtle joy. These four stages of meditation take place as follows:
a) First meditation, happy being happy . Practitioners start with the boring mind of the pollution of the realms of education, and wish to be separated. After meditation thanks to meditation that the separation (glass) is the umbrella of sex, practitioners are happy (being happy). That is the result of the first stage of meditation.
b) Second meditation, happy being . But the joy mentioned above, which makes the heart agitated, need to end except; so one has to go to samadhi. When concentration results, the gross joy of the first jhana ends and the subtle joy in samadhi arises again; so should be called "Dinh born joy".
c) Zen meditation, joyful magic . The joy in the second Jhana, though subtle, still makes the mind flutter, so the practitioner needs to abandon the joy in the second Jhana. When leaving this joy, another miraculous joy arose; so should call "Ly Hy magic touch".
In the sutras often written: The third realm of meditation is more joyful (marvelous), because in the lower realms there is only rough pleasures, while in the upper realms the President is pure President, no longer happy.
d) Fourth meditation, discharge pure thoughts . In the Third Jhana realm, though the raw pleasures of first and second jhana have ceased; But there is still miraculous joy. But as long as fun, the mind is not completely pure. Practitioners have to go up one more step, go into the fourth meditation, discharge the concept of fun, so that the mind is completely pure, so it should be called "Pure Mindfulness".
2. Tu unspecified . After going through the four meditation and having achieved the fullness, the practitioner continues to practice meditation and will go through the four stages called the following four non-determinative. The reason is called Quartet, because when entering these four concentration, the meditator will no longer see scenes and awakening.
a) Not infinite origin . When the meditator has attained the Fourth Jhana, the mind has been completely pure, but still seeing the world of beauty, the body is still in the scene and bound by the image, so the mind is boring. To leave the forms of body and sight, the meditator enters into the first samadhi of the emptiness, merging with the "boundless nothingness", that is, there is no separation, the boundary of the scene.
b) Infinite knowledge of origin . The meditator, after having been determined by the first emptiness, leaves the appearance of body and sight, sees the boundlessness of nothingness, but retains the narrow self, still sees the border of consciousness. So the meditator must enter the second samadhi of the emptiness, to erase the border of consciousness, when he attains, he can enter the realm of "Infinite Awakening".
c) Non-native ownership . The meditator, although he no longer sees the boundary and separation of consciousness, still sees that there is self, consciousness, energy; but as long as there is a sense of omnipotence, that is, to see himself and a person, he also sees possession. So the meditator must rise to another level, away from the agitation, energy, or concentration, "Non-possessing the country" (the realm of non-possession).
d) African perception, non-fiction origin . When the meditator has entered samadhi, "No property", no longer see the self, energy, but still "thought". But also thought it was disappointing. So the meditator must advance one more step into the realm of "Unimaginable samadhi". But this utopia, does not mean inanimate as rocky soil; unimaginable, but not unimaginable of stony ground, utopian but still lucid as a mirror, but not a plank or a rock face. That is the meaning of the realm "Non-idea, non-ideal."
There are places to say the "four not" belong to the pagan, but the meditator, starting from the First Jhana to the Third Jhana, at that time there were two dull paths: A path to the five-year A-function (7) in the Fourth Jhana realm (8) belongs to the realm of the third holy (9); a path to the four emptiness of the formless, the pagan.
III. INHERITED MEDITATION
Hinayana meditation or Hinayana meditation, which belongs to the worldly meditation world, means that practitioners who follow these types of meditation can go beyond the world and escape samsara. However, these meditation practices do not bring about a quick, big and comprehensive testimony like the Mahayana meditation methods, but only a slow, sequential, bundled, cultivating method, except one trouble. Brain; meaning that the result is small and limited, so it belongs to the Second Vehicle (the Second Vehicle is the Sravaka and Pratyekabuddha).
The second Hinayana meditation has many methods of practice, such as the Five Concentrations of Mindfulness, the First Form of the Country of Origin, the Eightfold Flushing Bowl, the Eight Noble Truths of the Land of origin, the Nine Noble Truths of the Abyss, the Six Noble Truths of Victory, the Six Paths of Magical Content, the Four Immeasurable Minds, Clever meditation, Bat Niem, Ten ideas, Second order, Lion diligent, Transcendental eighty, Thirty-seven assistant products etc. In summary, practitioners of the Second Vehicle meditation can bring the teachings of one or the other many methods of the Hinayana to contemplate meditation.
In the limited scope of this sutta, we cannot fully describe all of the Second-generation meditation practice, let alone a few methods. CONCLUSION ON INHERITED MEDITATION
The meditation practices of the Hinayana or the Hinayana mentioned above, as readers have seen, are beyond description. However, the practitioner wants to give results, must choose any method appropriate to his level, not having to meet any method that follows the method. This choice also needs to be guided by masters. Therefore, we often hear that in the past the monks went "praying for the Dharma", from country to country, not managing hard labor, sometimes sacrificing their lives. Praying for dharma means seeking for a teacher who teaches the austerities method, as Mr. Thien Tai went to visit 53 wise men, Huyen Trang traveled across China and then went to India to pray for the Dharma. Practitioners, after being accepted by the master, still have to follow their servants for a very long time for him to observe the student's inborn quality and level, and then pass it on to the cultivation method. In this way, the practice of the practitioner will be effective. On the contrary, if the master passes the discourse to the disciple, because he does not observe, investigate the inborn quality and the level of thoughtfulness, as Mr. Xa-Loi-Phat brings the Book of Dharma to teach the holder of the graveyard, or impure practice teaches the blacksmith, then only vain work, but nothing at all.
Practitioners should also remember one more thing, is on the way to practice should not bury, impatient. Austerities, like tree planting, cannot be impatient. Planters, daily worrying about watering fertilizer, fulfilling their duties, and waiting patiently; When the weather is strong enough, the tree will bear fruit naturally.
Austerities also, every day lo practice, hoarding for many years, until the round of fullness, the mind is clear.
Remember that spiritual practice has to go through many lifetimes, not just one or two to become Buddha.
IV. GREAT MEDITATION
Mahayana meditation is the meditation practice of the Mahayana meditation, also called the upper worldly superior meditation. This meditation is only for people who are very smart and very intelligent. The Mahayana Bodhisattva's many lifetimes have practiced many lifetimes, breaking all the gross afflictions, only subtle delusion, if this life meets the teacher who only allowed this Mahayana meditation, it will be revealed. enlightenment. Just like a branch about to bloom, just a little extra effort to cultivate, the flower will bloom immediately. The basic element of Mahayana meditation is wisdom. Meditators have to take wisdom to observe the mind nature by themselves. Without wisdom, it is difficult for meditators to achieve the result of practicing Mahayana meditation.
THE LEGAL PRESCRIPTIONS OF UNIVERSITY
The meditation methods of the Mahayana are many: Dharma flower tam soot, recite Buddha's eighty, Ban Chau tam soot, Sense of eighty, Serious monk tam sam, Tanh meditation, Nhut meditation, Nhut the meditation, Thien Nhon meditation, Nhut world meditation, Except negativity meditation, Try tha tha meditation, Pure meditation, Tanh Tanh meditation, Tathagata supreme meditation, Dat Ma meditation master etc ...
Here we study through some of the usual meditation method of Mahayana.
1. Why is it called "Dharma flower tam soot"?
Tam black or Tam ma topic is due to the Sanskrit Samadhi transliterated. The Chinese translates as "The right thing", meaning that the mind regulates righteousness, as if unmoved; There are also translations as "Right concentration" or "Right Life".
The reason is called "Dharma flower tam soot", because this meditation is based on the French Dharma and established. Sutra said: "People who want to see the Dharma of the three flowers, must practice according to the Lotus Sutra, recite the Mahayana ..."
His Holiness Tri fake master while copying the book "Dharma flower tam soot" has taught the method of tu tam tam, including ten things as follows:
a) Strictly directed ashram,
b) Pure body,
c) Pure karma,
d) Offering the Buddhas,
d) Feast of the Buddha,
e) Penance of six bases,
f) Going abroad,
g) Chanting,
h) Meditate,
i) General evidence.
2. Why is it called " reciting Buddha's eighteen"?
This method is according to the Buddhist concept of Ban. Practitioners often recite the name of Buddha Amitabha in the West, day and night without end. When samadhi then, practitioners see the Buddhas appear before their eyes, listen to the Buddha's sermon in the ear, and longevity maintained countless merits.
3. Why is it called "Sense of San"?
This method is based on the Great Product of Bat Nha. Practicing this practice, the mind enlightens all the dharma and is impartial (readers want to know more, please see the comment of Mr. Tri Jia the great master).
4. Why is it called "The tomb of seriousness"?
This method is based on the Strictly Sutra. Practitioners must realize that all things are from the entity such as the Tathagata of the mind, depending on which conditions arise, such as illusory, like chemical. Understanding the dharma is like illusory like chemistry, then based on that reason, participating in meditation, it is also called illusory.
5. Why is it called "Self-nature, meditation, meditation, Nan meditation, etc."?
Meditation dishes such as "Nature of meditation, Unity in meditation, Nan meditation, Unity in meditation, Goodness in meditation, Unfortunate meditation, Except for afflictions, Try forgiving meditation, Purifying meditation", including all nine dishes and is called Mahayana meditation.
The reason for calling these meditations is Mahayana meditation, because the Bodhisattvas rely on them to meditate and practice so they can achieve immeasurable and profound deeds that are immeasurable (readers who want to understand) Also, read the book "The First Precious Dharma Precepts" written by Mr. Tri Gia the Great Master).
6. Why is it called "Directly meditating"?
Directly meditation is a meditation that points directly to the heart, sees the nature of Buddha, does not use the means of cultivation and does not need scripture.
7. Why is it called "Tathagata pure meditation"?
Tathagata pure meditation is the pure meditation of Tathagata. As we all know, Shakyamuni Buddha before he was enlightened, sat in meditation for six years under a Bodhi tree. After eradicating all disturbing ignorance, the mind is pure, He witnesses the Bodhi path. Therefore, this meditation is called "Tathagata pure meditation".
8. Why is it called "Ultimate Tathagata Meditation Vehicle"?
This is a higher meditation than all the practices that Tathagata has applied.
9. Why is it called "Dat Ma An Su Zen "?
As we have heard, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, after coming from India to China to preach, sat face-to-wall for nine years, at Shaolin Temple, to meditate. Dat-Ma Patriarch meditation is the meditation that he practiced at Shaolin Temple.
The meditation of Mahayana, as readers have seen above, although many unspeakable, achievements can be divided into two broad categories:
1. A type commonly called tam soot, based on the Buddhist teachings of the Patriarch that teaches practice, there is practice, there is a certain method, such as Dharma flower tam soot, recitation of Buddha tam soot, Ban Chau tam soot , The sense of samadhi, the monk and the monk, etc. These types of samadhi are organized, have a certain method and are disseminated in writing, relatively less difficult and more mysterious than the second one. We are going to say below, should be cultivated by a lot of people and a great deal of people will also accomplish it.
2. A second type, which is taught not according to the scriptures, has no writing, that is, the type of meditation "Externally transmitted, incompatible", such as the "Truc-chi zen meditation", "Nhu Lai pure meditation, "" Nature pure meditation "," Tathagata ultimate meditation, "" Dat Ma Patriarchs meditation "etc. .. With this type of meditation is the enlightened person before using his enlightened mind to seal. for the enlightened one. That is the kind of meditation "Mindfulness of the mind, directing the mind to realize Buddha nature": The master uses his mind to contact the disciple's mind, directly transmitting his enlightenment through the mind of the disciple; as if using a bright light that his mind had emitted to shine on the disciple's mind; and this mind too, thanks to the direct influence of the enlightenment of teachers that light up and transmit from teacher to student, from life to life. This type of meditation is the one that has been passed down from Shakyamuni Buddha to the Sixth Patriarch. This is an orthodox, direct way of "evangelizing" or "propagating" directly, but not as common as the preceding one, because each life can be transmitted to only one person, but cannot be transmitted to many people at a time. And the person to be affirmed must be an outstanding, supernatural position.
This method of teaching meditation has two ways:
a) Consult a first sentence. The first dialogue is a meditation sentence or "koan", which means a project or thesis containing a very short sentence, but with profound meanings, for ordinary people who do not understand.
When a Patriarch of this Zen school realized that there was an outstanding monk in his disciple, who could keep the religious precepts, continue the cause of Zen Buddhism and display enlightenment, the Patriarch gave him the disciple had a first sentence (a thesis, as it is now, doctors or doctors, before graduation, must submit to the jury). This disciple, day and night watching that first sentence, sometimes it takes ten years or fifteen years to realize it. After seeing that his disciple had already become enlightened, the Patriarch signed the seal.
b) But sometimes the Patriarch does not give his disciples a first line for reference, but uses very strange forms, which are often difficult for people to understand such as hitting, shouting, signaling, invited to eat rice, drink tea, etc. such; like if a disciple came to pray to a Patriarch who did not say anything, just beat the other disciple with a meditation stick (whip) to see how the disciple reacted. come on. Due to the reaction, the Patriarch knew whether the other disciple was enlightened or not.
(See Dharma Sutra Pitaka).
In summary, this meditation method is very mysterious, inconceivable, so the ancients said: "magical muscle meditation" (miraculous meditation machine). The Patriarchs during the mission, not based on a certain principle, a certain method. They depending on the opportunity that improvised, that is, observing the root of the guide, whether it is timely, and what method must be used for the other disciple to be enlightened, and then they oppose the law. Of course, this method they use only temporarily. Therefore, it is not possible to know in advance what methods they will use for the transmission.
Later, some people imitated methods such as fighting, screaming, etc. But because they did not know the opportunity, it only made people feel pain and fear, but it did not work.
THE INHERITANCE SYSTEM OF THE COMMUNITIES IN THE INDIAN RACE
1. Mr. Ma-Ha Ca-Lettuce, the First Patriarch of Zen Buddhism in India
In the Brahmin Sutta questioned the Buddha, and in the first volume of "Adapting the millet", it was written roughly as follows: When Buddha was in the Linh Son Association, there was Mr. An Pham Thien Vuong, bringing a lotus to the Buddha. Buddha took a lotus flower and put it up to enlighten them. The whole assembly is quiet, nobody understands what the Buddha meant. Only Mr. Ma-Ha Ca-Lettuce is enlightened to meditate on the Buddha's body, so he changes his face of joy, smiles and smiles (breaks the face of the joke). The Buddha noticed, immediately seal (certification) for him Ca-Lettuce was transmitted and made the first (Preliminary ancestry in India). Buddha declared the following:
Original:
Ngo Huu district legal eye organ
Nirvana miraculous mind, truly formless,
Vi magic method, kim Phu Ma-Ha Ca-Lettuce
Translate:
We have the "Dharma Eye of the Dharma", also called "Nirvana in the mind", also called "The true formless General" also called "Abhidharma Method", now we transmit it to Mr. Ma-Ha Ca-Lettuce.
After that, the Buddha transmitted the medicine and said the following verse:
Original:
Dharma has no law
Lawlessness, herons
Kim phuong timeless
The law of dharma is tangible
Translate:
The legal capital is not legal
No dharma is also dharma
Now transmits the lawlessness (formlessness)
No law has any law.
This is the origin of Zen Buddhism, taking the mind to transfer the mind (of the mind's mind) without using scriptures and means.
2. Mr. An-Nan, the second Patriarch of Zen Buddhism in India
One day he asked Ananda Nan Ancestor:
- In addition to transmitting medicine, Shakyamuni also transmitted anything specific to Him?
Ca-Lettuce to call out loud:
- A-Nan!
Ananda: Yes!
Teaching team:
- The pole swung in front of the fallen temple!
Mr. A-Nan immediately realized enlightenment, so Ca-Lettuce passed the medicine bowl and sealed it as the second Patriarch. (See Buddhist dictionary, page 1638 on "Ca-Lettuce suicide").
From Ananda to later, there were 26 more Patriarchs. Including Mr. Ca-Lettuce and Mr. An-Nan, in India there are a total of 28 Patriarchs, in the following order:
1. The Ma-Ha Ca-Lettuce
2. Tổ A-Nan
3. To Thuong-Na Hoa-Tu
4. The Uu-Ba Cuc-Da Group
5. De-Da-Ca
6. Di-Gia-Ca Group
7. Grandmother Tu-Tu-Mat
8. To Buddha-Da Nan-De
9. The Apparel-Da Secret-Da
10. Rape-Ton-Gia
11. Phu-Na Gia-Xa Xa
12. To Ma-Minh
13. The Ca-Pi Ma-La
14. Long-Tho Group
15. The Ca-Na De-Ba
16. The Lazarus Group
17. The Sangha Nan-De
18. The Old-Da-Xa-Da-Da
19. The Cù-ma-La-Sà
20. To Xa-Da-Da
21. The Grandmother Ba-Tu Ban-Dau
22. The Ma-Noa-La
23. To Hac-Lac-Na
24. The Lion-Lion
25. The Ba-Xa-Tu-Da Group
26. The Bat-Nhu Mat-Da
27. The Bat-Nha-La-La Group
28. To Bo-De-Ma.
(According to the story of Phu Phai Tibetan Nhon charm)
These twenty-eight ancestors brightened Buddhism in India, not just for Zen Buddhism, which later spread worldwide, in large part due to the merits of these 28 Patriarchs. Nowadays, when mentioning names like Ma Ha Ca Lettuce, An Nan, Homeland Ton Ton, Ma Minh, Long Tho, no Buddhist is unknown. And this fact proves that most famous Patriarchs are in the Zen religion. This remark was not only proven in India, but also in China, Japan and Vietnam.
THE TRANSMISSION OF THE MEDITATION IN CHINA
1. His Holiness Bodhidharma, the First Patriarch of Zen Buddhism in China .
After Bat Nha Da La, the 27th Patriarch of Zen Buddhism in India, sealed the 28th Patriarch, Bodhidharma stayed in India for a while, and obeyed his master's blessings, He went to China. Flower evangelization.
He went to China to take care of the reign of Luong Vo De (528 dl.), Who came to see the king and hoped that the king would help a great deal in spreading Buddhism in China. But recognizing the king's roots were still low and his beliefs were only superficial in appearance, Dat Ma's ancestor retired from the king to practice at Shaolin Temple, in Trung Son (Wei province). He sat on the wall and sat in meditation for nine years, waiting for a convenient opportunity to evangelize (see the book To Dat Ma, published by Huong Dao). It is this type of meditation that the next life is called "Papa Ma Zen Master". During the nine-year period, he meditated in Shaolin, many monks heard his name, came to pray, but he did not receive anyone. It is also a method of examining the inborn nature and mind of people who come to pray for their devotion to the religion. Among those who came to pray, only one of them showed great patience, daring to sacrifice everything for the sake of religion. That was Lord Than Quang, who was later sealed by Dat Ma to be the second Patriarch of Zen Buddhism in China, and changed his name to Hue Kha.
To make a guideline for future cultivators, Bodhidharma Bodhisattva also passed on the Lankavatara Sutta including 4 volumes, very valuable.
2. His Excellency Hue Kha (Than Quang) is the second Zen monk in China.
Lord Quang, heard the name of Dat Dat Ma coming to pray. But the Patriarch did not continue. Lord Quang Quang knelt waiting for several years on the porch of the temple; but also I do not consider it. Finally, to show his utmost sincerity, to dedicate himself to pray, Lord Quang Quang severed his arm. At that time, the Patriarch Dat turned and asked:
- What bridge are you here for?
He replied:
- Peaceful Dharma Bridge.
Patience:
- He brought the mind here to make us safe.
Sir:
- I can't find the mind.
Teaching Team:
- I have peace of mind for you already!
He immediately enlightened. Patriarch Dat said the following verse, while giving the dharma to Hue Kha Kha:
Original:
Self-hybrid maize corn

The most blossoming flowers
result come in natural.
Translate:

3. Mr. Tang Shan, the third Patriarch of Zen Buddhism in China.
Hue Kha, after a period of practicing, sealed him again as the third Patriarch of Zen Buddhism in China.
4. HE Dao Tin, the fourth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism in China.
Sangha transmits the Dharma to the Tao Dao as the fourth Patriarch. From the Dao Tin faith, the transmission of dharma was divided into two lines, led by the following two men.
a) Mr. Hoang Nhan is located in Dong Son mountain, Huynh Mai district.
b) His Dharma Dung in Niu Dau, also called "Niu Dau meditation".
5. Mr. Hoang Rings, the fifth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism in China.
The word Hoang patience means extreme patience and enduring. These two words can summarize an entire dharma story, encompassing the following many types of patience:
One day, Mr. Dao Tin, the fourth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism, saw an old man coming to pray, the self-interested nature, which could be taught the dharma. But because his age was old, he could no longer live long, so the four ancestors taught:
- I'm old, you're old, too! If we gave him a few days to die, and then he died, who would stay and preach? So, if you can exchange your body, I will evangelize! The old man said:
- If my body has not been exchanged yet, if the Father passed away in advance, how can I evangelize me?
The Fourth Patriarch taught:
- I will stay forever to wait for you.
Obeying the Patriarch, the old man walked around the stream, saw a girl washing on the bank. The old man asked:
- You let me sleep through one night, okay?
The girl answered:
- Ask your parents.
The old man continued:
- If you agree, I'll ask later.
The girl answered:
- Yes, yes
Being heard, the old man disappeared into the forest and left his body.
And the other girl, no husband from which suddenly became pregnant. Being chased by her parents, she had to leave home to beg for hardship, enduring so much suffering. After giving birth to a few-year-old baby, she carried him to the temple. The baby saw the four groups, happily opened its mouth and laughed. The team said:
- I am looking forward to you!
The group asked for the baby to be adopted and named it Hoang Rings. He named it means that: Patience has waited, not died to wait for a mission, and the mother has endured many humiliations, injustice, misery to give birth to the baby.
The Taoist faith nourishes the child until he grows up and transmits the dharma. Mr. Hoang Rings is the fifth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism. After the mission was completed, the four new Foundations passed away (see Quy Nguyen Truc Chi, the negative meaning).
6. HE Hui Hui of the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism in China.
Hue Nang was a poor, illiterate child. He specialized in collecting and selling firewood to raise money to support his elderly mother. One day, the firewood came to sell to a rich man. While waiting, he listened to the host recite the Kim Cang prayer. To the sentence "Ung countless headquarters born pediatric wonders," He immediately enlightened.
Waiting for the host to finish chanting, he admired and asked,
- Isn't it good that you chant? I also want to be recited to read like him.
He told him:
- In Đống Sơn mountain, Huỳnh Mai district, there are virtues of the Five Great Patriarchs.
He answered:
- I want to be like that too; Strictly because the old mother no one nourished so do not know what to do!
Phu Ong said:
- If you are really determined to become a monk, then go back and try to chop wood for as much as you can, bring me gold here. He took the gold and left to raise his mother, then went home.
Hui Nang rejoiced, day and night trying to cut lots of firewood, sold it to the rich man, and after finishing the housework, he went to Huynh Mai district to pray to the worship of the Great Patriarch Hoang Rings.
The five found him ask:
- Where did you come from and come here to ask for work?
He replied:
- I came from the South to pray to be a Buddha.
The Five Founders see him as a strange shape, but the nature is extraordinary profit, can connect the ancestors later. He did not want them to know, so he rebuked aloud:
- You are savages in the South, and pray to become a Buddha?
Mr. Hui Neng answered:
- White Master! Although the human body has a divide between the North and the South, the Buddha nature is still equal, regardless of the North and the South.
The Five Fathers feared that they would reveal their secrets and secrets, so they would not ask for any more questions, but they sent him down to the house to pay for the rice.
From then on, the Five Founders did not mention him anymore, and Mr. Hui Neng, every day, kept diligently pounding rice.
Over a long period of time, one of the Five Founders found themselves old and wanted to choose an ancestor, and declared that:
- If anyone raises the shelf, is enlightened to meditate, then we will seal and transmit Dharma for the Sixth Patriarch.
This news was spread very quickly.
Among them, everyone was sobbing and stirring about:
- Among them, only Venerable Than Tu is intelligent, learns much and is the most talented, surely the Venerable will also be transmitted to the Patriarch.
But Venerable Than Tu did not dare to believe that he would be lucky, so he did not dare to bring his verse directly to the Five Great Patriarchs. The Venerable waited at a quiet night, all of them slept, took the lamp to suspense to write a verse on the east wall of the corridor and did not dare to sign it. Venerable Than Tu thought: "If thanks to elaborately practicing for a long time, this verse is gaining the attention of the Patriarch, then this is a great blessing for us. At that time we will worship, otherwise we will silence like not know. "

In the morning, the monks saw the verses appearing on the wall of the hall, everyone admired:
- There it is! Your successor is here! If not Venerable Than Tu, who else!
Listening to them, they praised and rallied to see the verse, Mr. Hui Neng also came from the house to follow them. After watching the verse, Mr. Hui Nang said:
- Still standing outside the fence door.
People listening to Him say so, pouting contempt:
- Ignorant ignorance of such a word, that dare to blame is still standing outside the fence!
Mr. Hui Neng calmly said:
- I have a poem, please write on the wall for me, because I am not literate.
One person happily wrote for him. Hui Hui read the following verse:
Original:

Translate:

After listening to the poem, everyone was astounded: Didn't expect such an ignorant person to make such an excellent poem?
Sleep found in them stirring up discussion, want to dispel public opinion can be dangerous for Mr. Hui Nang, should tell in them to read the verse of Venerable Than Tu, which ignores the verse of Hue Hui.
One afternoon, Sleeping on his own, he went down to the huts, went to Mr. Hui Nang and pounded the rice and asked:
- Is the rice white? (secretly asked: Were you enlightened?)
Mr. Hui Nang responded:
- White Patriarch, the already retired white rice, but still lacks people ready (His intention to say: I have already enlightened and there is still a shortage of people to transmit).
The team finished listening, took a stick to knock on the top of the pestle three times, and went up. In the third watch, Mr. Hui Nang entered the Nest's bedroom. He was allowed to sleep and seal the seals and gave him medicine as the sixth Patriarch, and taught him to go to the South that very night, to propagate the dharma.
Since then, Lu To Hui-neng propagated the dharma in the south, and Shen-Tu passed the dharma in the north. The South advocates about enlightenment; the North advocates for a religious shop, so it should be called "South of the North, North of the store" or "Nam Nang Bac Tu".
The following is a map of the six Zen Masters in China:
Preliminary: HE Bodhidharma
Second: Sir Hue Kha (Than Quang)
Three: His Sangha
Quartet: HE Dao Tin
Five ancestors: Mr. Hoang Rings
The Chief Ox Zen Master
Sixth Patriarch: Hui Hui
Mr. Spirit Tu.
From the Sixth Patriarch Hui Neng later, there was no longer the tradition of taking medicine, and the groups no longer had a specific seal for one. Therefore, Zen Buddhism is no longer a single tradition, but is divided into the following two sects and lines:
TWO BREAKS AND FIVE LINES
Hui Hui, since he became the Sixth Patriarch, has transmitted the Dharma to many disciples. Among the disciples, the most famous are Mr. Hoai Nhuong in Nam Nhac and Mr. Hanh Tu in Thanh Nguyen (see Dharma Bao Dan Kinh). These two men opened the two Zen schools: Nam Nhac and Thanh Nguyen.
Men of Music later split into two lines: Lam Te and Quy threshold.
The Phai Thanh Nguyen was divided into three lines: Tao Dong, Van Mon and Phap Nhan.
The following is the scheme of the two sects and the five Zen traditions in China.
1. Linji Lineage
a) The lineage of the Linji lineage, as follows:
- Hoai Nhuong Zen Master
- Dao Nhut Zen master (Ma's family name, also called Ma To)
- Master of Zen Monastery (Hoai Hai)
- Huynh Nghien Zen Master (Hy Van) - Lam Te Nghia Huyen.
b. The transmission of (meditation muscle) of religious Lin Te:
As we mentioned at the beginning of this booklet, the teachings of the Zen religion are hard to understand for ordinary people. For example, in the Linji sect, the transmission of the dharma uses only the scepter and shout to make the meditator enlighten. This way of enlightenment originated from the master Zen Master Huynh.
To pray for enlightenment, one day, Lam Te asked Mr. Huynh Nghiet:
- Why is it called the great idea of Buddhism?
Mr. Huynh Nghiet immediately took a walking stick (stick or whip) to beat Lam Te. Three times Mr. Lin Te asked, three times were beaten like that.
Lam Te was puzzled, did not understand what the meaning was, so he went to study with Mr. Dai Ngu Zen master, so that Lam Te could realize the principle of Mr. Huynh Nghiet.
From then on, the Linji lineage, when he enlightened his disciples, used the method of beating and shouting.
He said:
"Sometimes shouting like the diamond king's sword, sometimes shouting like a lion stomping, sometimes screaming like a tree in the grass, sometimes screaming, not starting the use of the scream" . Therefore, people call it "Lam Te tetrous" (four screams of Lin Te).
The lineage of Linji was later divided into two branches: Duong Ky and Huynh Long. From the Song dynasty onwards, the Linji lineage was very successful. To this day, the Zen Buddhism in the Great Lineage is much of the Linji lineage.
2. The Threshold Line
The Patriarch Bach Trach passed on to Mr. Linh Huu Zen at Quy Son Mountain in Dam Chau. His Excellency Spirit gave Him the Threshold of Hue President.
The Throne Master was a enlightened Zen master, his miracle no one could have foreseen. His influence was great, so people have taken his name to name a whole line of Zen Buddhism. His evangelization is also very strange. Once someone came to ask for a teaching, the Throne Master only painted the appearance of a buffalo, or the drawing of a human figure, a Buddha or a swastika, and a person who was enlightened.
3. The Cao Cao movement
The transmission of this religion, in the following order:
a) Mr. Thanh Nguyen Zen Master
b) His Excellency Hy Thien Zen master, ie Thach Dau Venerable
c) Mr. Duoc Son Zen Master
d) Mr. Van Nham Zen master
d) Mr. Luong Gioi Zen Master at Dong Son Mountain
e) His Excellency the President Zen Master at Tao Son Mountain
Mr. Van Nham Zen Master used the method of Buu tam samui, transmitted to Luong Gioi (Dong Son); Luong Gioi also used this method to transmit to Buu Tich (Cao Son).
4. The Vân-Môn stream
The transmission of this religion, in the following order:
a) Thach Dau Zen Master
b) Mr. Thien Hoang
c) Mr. Long Đàm
d) Mr. Duc Son
d) Mr. Tuyet Phong
e) Mr. Vân Uyên Zen Master at Zen Châu, Vân Môn.
His transmission method Van Uyen (Van Mon) is also very strange, few people understand the meaning: Who comes to ask the religion, then He only says a word "Dare". If the religious person, still hesitating to understand, he added the word "Di". Because he only responded to such a word for a religious person, the world called his customary "Unity" (Observing the logic in a word Dare or word Di).
5. French Line Labels
The transmission of this religion, in the following order:
a) Mr. Tuyet Phong Zen Master
b) Mr. Huyen Sa Zen Master
c) His Holiness the Zen Master
d) Mr. Vân Ích Zen Master.
The method of enlightenment for those who come to the guidance of Mr. Van Ich Zen master is to use the following six generals in the Avatamsaka Sutra:
- General: That is to say feet like mind.
- Prime Minister: Ie the coast arises from chon nhut nhutest mind.
- General: The methods are the same.
- General minister: Depending on each minister is not equal
- General: Setting up a scene-world.
- Prime Minister: The position is not synonymous with Prime Minister.
MEDITATION IN VIETNAM
As we all know, Vietnamese Buddhism is deeply influenced by Chinese Buddhism. Therefore, if in China Zen Buddhism was popularly popularized, in Vietnam Zen Buddhism is also considered as a main sect of Buddhism. It is also a matter of course, nothing is difficult to understand.
Buddhism was introduced into Vietnam in the second century AD, led by monks from India and China, such as Ma Ha Ky Vuc, Khuong Tang Hoi (Indians), and Mau Bac (Chinese people). Flower). In this ancient time, we could not know which sects they belonged to, and transmitted into Vietnam what teachings. But we can be sure that it is not a Zen religion. Because Zen Buddhism in Vietnam is from China. Meditation in China had to wait until the beginning of the 6th century, during the reign of Luong Vo De (528), the Bodhi Bodhidharma came into being. Therefore, it is certain that Zen Buddhism in Vietnam can only appear at the end of the 6th century CE. This conjecture has been proved by the history of evangelization in Vietnam. In 580 (at the end of the 6th century), Bhikkhuni Da Luu Chi, first introduced Zen Buddhism into Vietnam, and was the ancestor of Vietnam Zen Buddhism. After the Bhikkhuni Da Luu Chi Chi also has many other famous monks to bring Zen Buddhism into Vietnam, and thus, Vietnam has many Zen religious sects as in China. A special and proud thing for Vietnamese Buddhists is that in addition to the Zen religions in China, even in our country, there is also a Zen religion founded by a king, that is the Truc Lam sect that the ancestor was King Tran Nhan Ton.
Here, we talk about the Zen religion in sequence.
1. The Sisters of Ni Ni Da Lưu Chi
a) The Patriarch of Zen Buddhism in Vietnam
Bhikkhuni Da Luu Chi, the Indian is his disciple Sang Xan (The three main Zen group).
The first time I met the Sangan group in Tu Khong Mountain, seeing the unusual appearance of the Patriarch, the Bhikkhuni Da Luu Chi was born respectfully, bowing his hands and bowing. He bowed three times, but the father still sat down and closed his eyes, not saying anything (meditation). He stood still and thought for a while, suddenly saw in other people, as if he had realized something. He immediately fell down and prostrated three. The team only nodded three times (muscle meditation). After that first meeting, he became one of the best disciples of the Sangha.
Later, the Patriarch taught him to the South to evangelize, He obeyed to Vietnam at the end of the 6th century, staying at Phap Van Pagoda in Ha Dong Province.
When he was about to pass away, he called his disciple Phap Hien to enter the room to wish that:
“The Buddha's initiation cannot be ambiguous. The perfect initiation is like nothingness, no shortage, no coming, no going, no going, no loss, no identity, no difference, no difference. often not paragraph, not born nor kill, not far nor not far away. Just because of expectations should fake that name (Initiation) only. "
Buddhas of the three generations therefore (Initiation) that are direct. The Great Patriarch Calendar was therefore enlightened. This is the same for me, and so are you, even the same sentient beings are like that.
When the Third Patriarchal Sangha affirmed "Mental initiation" for us, told us, "You should go to the South to preach, don't do anything here. Therefore, we went through many places to come here. We now meet you, just like that miraculous word. So you should remember my words carefully. Now is the time for me to go! ”
After teaching, the monks and nuns of Luu Chi Chi folded their hands and sat quietly and passed away. Devotees tea (cremation) and then collect relics, build towers to worship.
Later, King Ly Thai Ton wrote a post tracing him as follows:
Original:
In the morning of crossing South Korea
Literature cui meditation
Application of Buddhas credits
Far uniting the mind
Hao-old men Hao Hao

Ha happy time relative

Translate:

b) HE Phap Hien Zen master, the second Patriarch of Zen Buddhism in Vietnam
After the death of the Bhikkhuni, the Most Venerable Phap Hien was the second Patriarch of the Zen religion. The surname Do, is from Chu Dien District (now Son Tay). When he came to Phap Van pagoda, the Bhikkhuni Da Luu Chi saw him, then looked carefully at his face and asked:
- What uncle?
The Dharma Master asked again:
- Venerable them?
The team asked:
- You don't have a last name?
He answered:
- Why not! But does the Venerable know?
Covering up:
- Known for what?
The Dharma Master suddenly realized that the mind of the Bhikkhuni Da Luu Chi (meditation) immediately fell down to prostrate, please be a disciple and then be initiated.
A little while after President, he entered Tu Son mountain to meditate, animals often wrap tangerines around. People find it more strange and admirable. Practitioners come to study the religion very crowded. Meditation during this period can be said to be the best. It was also thanks to the propaganda merit of Bhikshuni Da Luu and Phap Hien. Later in this school, there were also many excellent Zen teachers such as Phap Thuan, Van Hanh, etc.
2. The Vo Ngon Thong School
a) The Monk of the second Zen religion in Vietnam
His family name Tinh, from Guangzhou, ordained as a monk at Song Lam pagoda (Zhejiang now). His temper is calm and quiet, but his reasoning is well understood, so people give him the title of Vo Ngon Thong. He is a disciple of the Bach Trieu Zen master (a disciple of Mat To).
When he first came to see the Bach Trieu Zen master, he met him when he was teaching them to study. A monk asked the Master of the Zen Master,
What is the method of enlightenment of Mahayana school?
The Master of Zen Monastery teaches that:
- Mind weak pine, Hue self-projection (if the mind is clear, the natural Hue sun shines).
Hearing that sentence, he Vo Ngon Thong naturally enlightened. In 820, he went to Vietnam to practice at Kien So pagoda, Phu Dong village (Bac Ninh). He sat on the wall face-to-face during the day of meditation. He cultivated like that for a few years no one knew, except for the monk at that temple, Cam Thanh Zen master, who knew that he was a highly enlightened monk in Zen religion, so he worshiped him as a teacher.
Before passing away, he called Cam Thanh Zen master and said:
- In the past, the founder of Nam Nhac, when he was about to die, told the poem that:
"Most of the Dharma, the mind of birth
Infinite mind birth, France no residence
The downfall reaches the mind, the ominous residence
Non-standard treatment, kidney material contempt.
Mean:
All things, are self-borne; mind if not born, not resident. If you understand that mental state, then there is no problem in doing anything. The mind of that dharma, if you don't meet the root-level person, don't spread it. ”
"Those are the words of the ancients, now I have also told them".
After saying, he folded his hands and passed away.
b) The Second Patriarch of Vo Ngon Thong sect
Cam Thanh Zen master: Zen master from Tien Du district (Bac Ninh) is the head monk at Kien Son pagoda (Bac Ninh).
When Vo Ngon Thong van passed through, saw that he was qualified to transmit the word, should stay. And he feels also found in his Vo Ngon Thong a Zen master attained enlightenment, should be respected as a teacher, early evening servant never delay. The two teachers and students were very fond of each other, so Mr. Vo Ngon Thong gave him the title of Acknowledgment.
It is truly worthy that Mr. Chenghui is the lineage of His Vo Ngon Thong. One day a disciple asked him:
- What is Buddha?
He answered:
- Everywhere is Buddha.
The disciple asked again:
- What is the mind of Buddha?
He answered:
- Not hiding anything.
This is also a small story, but it speaks of a special way of transmitting the mind of dharma, albeit simplified, that involves many extremely profound meanings.
Mr. Chan Thanh was not sick but passed away, and passed the Dharma transmission to Thien Zen Zen masters.
c) The Three Patriarchs of Vo Ngon Thong sect
Mr. Thien Thien Zen Master: Mr. Thien Hoi is from Super Type (Bac Ninh). He was a disciple of Cam Thanh Zen master, so that for more than 10 years, one day he came into the room to ask him:
- In Buddhist scriptures, it is taught: "Shakyamuni Buddha once practiced countless lifetimes into a Buddha, but now he continues to teach that" mind means Buddha, Buddha means mind ", what does it mean? True disciple did not understand please teach him clearly.
Dr. Cheng said:
- Who said that in the Buddhist scripture? Who said that?
- So that word is not Buddha theory?
- Where is the Buddha's teaching. Buddhist scriptures Manjusha has taught: "I stay in the world to teach sentient beings 49 years, never put a sentence in writing to tell anyone ever!". Because according to the right path, if we use written documents as evidence to lead, it is the pothole; taking the asceticism to pray to Buddha, that is delusion; leaving the mind and praying to Buddha, that is the pagan; But persistent mind that is Buddha, also a ghost.
- If the mind is said to be Buddha, then in that mind, what is Buddha, what is not Buddha?
- In the past, someone asked Ma To, "If you tell that mind is Buddha, what is Buddha in that mind?" Come in and show it to me! ”. He is not just. Ma To continued: "Achieving it everywhere is a Buddha, but if you cannot achieve it, then you will go wrong forever". So just because of a word that concealed it, it turned out to be that mistake. Do people understand?
Mr. Thien Hoi replied:
- If so, the disciple understands.
- How do you understand?
- Disciple understands that everywhere, everywhere is the mind of Buddha.
After saying, Thien Hoi Zen master collapsed. Mr.Thanh said:
- The one who knows where to go.
Because of that rapid leadership, he thanked the disciples of Thien Hoi, meaning "to understand".
Above are some of the stories of enlightenment that we often see among the Zen people.
The transmission from teacher to student in Vo Ngon Thong sect has been like that for 15 generations. Up to the life of the layperson Ung Thuan (1221) is the last.
3. Phai Thao Duong
In the Year of the Rooster (1069), King Ly Thanh Ton went to fight Chiem Thanh and captured the King, Che Old and many civilians and soldiers. These soldiers and civilians were distributed to government officials to serve as servants. Among the officials was a monk. One day he was away from home and found his "Grammar" was repaired by a prisoner. When asked, I realized that it was a Chinese Zen teacher who followed him through Chiêm Thành and was unfortunately taken prisoner. The Zen master was Mr. Thao Duong, a disciple of Tuyet Dau Giac Minh in China.
When knowing the whereabouts of Thao Duong Zen master, King Ton Ton immediately ordained him to be a national teacher. Mr. Thao Duong founded the Forum at Khai Quoc Pagoda in Thang Long citadel. Practitioners to study very crowded. Thao Duong Duong founded a third Zen religion in Vietnam. The Path of the Paths has passed down for five generations, attaining enlightenment to all nineteen.
4. Phái Trúc Lâm
The first of the Truc Lam sects was King Tran Nhan Ton (1278-1308). He was religious when he was young. When he was 16 years old, he became a Crown Prince. He tried to leave it to me but could not, so he climbed into a hideout and planned to become a monk at Yen Tu Mountain. But he was only halfway there when he was discovered, and was arrested by his father. He must be reluctant to return. After he became king, he became an army elder and maintained the independence of the country against the mass invasion, but ineffectiveness of the Yuan army. After chasing the Nguyen enemy, he passed the throne to his son Anh Ton, and entered the monastery at Yen Tu mountain, fulfilling his childhood aspirations. He took the title "Huong Van Dai Ðà Ðà Ðà", took a position of teaching, and disciples came to study and recited thousands of people. He often went around to preach and give medicine. He passed away calmly at age 51.
Among the Zen Buddhism sects in Vietnam, only Truc Lam sect is developed in Vietnam. In this school, there are also many famous Zen teachers such as Phap Loa the Guru, Huyen Quang, etc.
5. Lam Te School
Lam Te School was founded by Mr. Nguyen Thieu in Central Vietnam. The surname Ta, from Guangzhou (China). He followed a merchant ship to An Nam, staying in Qui Ninh (Binh Dinh), set up Thap Thap Di Da pagoda, opened a school to teach. After that, he went to Thuận Hóa to set up Hà Trung Pagoda, then came to Xuân Kinh (Huế) to set up the Quốc An pagoda and erected the Đồng Tháp tower.
After a period of evangelization in Vietnam, he served with the mission of Anh Ton Hieu, meaning the Emperor, who was contemporary called Lord Nghia (Nguyen Phuc Tran 1687-1691) to return to China, inviting monks and inviting statues and statues. gas. He was invited by Venerable Thach Liem and other monks to return to Vietnam to open a very important ordination forum at Thien Mu Pagoda. After that, Lord Nguyen bestowed him on the position of Abbot of Ha Trung Pagoda.
In the 10th year of the Thai Bao Dynasty, he passed away at Ha Trung pagoda, after instructing his disciple and passing on the following stanza:
President, invisible glass
Intelligent, European intolerance
Roads, non-animals
Willow, willow
General idea: The pure Dharma body is clear as a shining mirror without dust, like Minh Chau grain, in shining light. Although currently the things are different, but are the legal body manifest. The dharmakaya body is often silent, which is not nothing, that is, the "righteous magic vacuum".
Considering in the "Calendar of the patriarchal tradition", He stood on the 69th, about the orthodox Lam Te sect, He stood on the 33rd, also considered the Lam Te sect in Central Vietnam, he is the Patriarch.
6. Willow Lieu Quan
The Willow wing is derived from the Venerable Lieu Quan. Mr. Lieu is a native of Phu Yen (Song Cau). He went to Thuan Hoa to take the novice ordination with the Venerable Thach Liem. In 1702, he went to Long Son to study the meditation with Mr. Tu Dung Venerable (The ancestor of the painting from Tu Dam Hue pagoda, Chinese people).
To Tu-Dung taught him to study the sentence: "All things are the best, the best rules of the land", (like all things to one, one to where?). He consulted for a few years, until he saw the Truyen Luc Luc, saw the sentence: "Only the mind-transmitting object, without any meeting of the land", he immediately enlightened. In 1742, at the end of the autumn season, he was sick. Before he died, he called his disciples to teach, "The predestination is over, I am going to die."
Seeing his disciples crying, he taught, "What do you weep for?" The Buddha was born also enter Nirvana. We now go to the clear, there is room. You shouldn't cry and don't be sad. ”
Then he wrote the following farewell poem:
Original:
Losing ten years middle world teenager
No no, great colors and colors
Kim Trieu menopause, complete treatment
Ha all know three questions.
Translate:
In addition to seventy years in the world
No no, the color is all informed
Today contented about the old place
Hà must consider and ask his ancestors.
When he finished writing, he told his disciples:
- After I go, you must think of impermanence quickly, need to study diligently. Do your best to come and not ignore my words.
He passed away on November 22, Nham Tuat (1742) at the time of the Goat, after having finished tea and happily said goodbye to his disciples.
Here we should also make this point clear: As I said in the previous paragraph, the Zen religion founded by the Vietnamese people has only one unique faction, founded by King Tran Nhan Ton, who is the Truc Lam Yen Tu sect. But coming here, we see another departure from the Lieu Quan sect, led by Mr. Lieu Quan, a famous Vietnamese monk. Does that conflict with the comment above? In fact, compared with the other Zen religious sects in Vietnam, the Lieu Quan sect is only a small sect, located only in a few provinces in Central-Vietnam.
Besides, Lieu Quan is also a disciple of Mr. Tu Dung, a Chinese monk from Lam Te school. Therefore, the Liuhuan faction, if we go a little further out of origin, it is only a branch of the Lam Te sect.
C. SUMMARY OF TYPES OF MEDITATION
There are many types of meditation, but it can be divided into two broad categories: Right concentration and wrong concentration, or Divine meditation and Holy meditation or pagan meditation and Buddhist meditation.
MEDITATION OF FOREIGNERS
People who follow this type of meditation are motivated by non-righteous thoughts (disturbing emotions, greed, hatred, ignorance, etc.). They do not aim at eradicating negativity, praying for enlightenment, or enlightenment, liberation, but narrow, short-sighted goals, like praying to see miracles. be transformed by the magical power to roam in other worlds, pray to the gods to enjoy the pleasures of the fairy, pray for the body not to be sick, to be immortal, to be miraculous illness, to be worshiped, respected, or to be close to a woman, or to seek financial benefits, etc.
Listen to what Sun Tzu's ancestor taught: "The wrong people accept attachments, like the upper realms, the lower realms that practice meditation, that is the pagan meditation."
MEDITATION OF PHU PHU
People who practice this type of meditation do not have a noble mind, just because they are tired of the realms of sex, which are pollutants, which are reborn in the Realms of Color and Formlessness to enjoy the pleasures of serenity.
Listen to Ton Mat's group criticizing cultivators for this type of meditation: "The righteous person believes in loving-kindness, but uses the upper realms in the lower realms and cultivates meditation.
MEDITATION OF BUDDHISM
There are two types of meditation in Buddhism: Hinayana meditation and Mahayana meditation.
- Hinayana meditation: meditation for people with Hinayana nature. People who practice this type of meditation have only limited use, because any practice can only eliminate the defilements of that dharma. And the cultivation here is only sequentially advanced, but can not be immediately enlightened.
Moreover, the Hinayana meditator, though he has broken the ego, is still in the attachment. They are not enlightened that: The methods of practice are all means to help them eliminate ignorance of negativity, to go to enlightenment, and not to be persistent with true cultivation, real witness.
Mr. Ton Mat defined the Hinayana as follows: "The person who knows the reason for the self (but still accepts the law) and practices meditation is the Hinayana meditation."
- Mahayana meditation: This is the method of meditation of the Bodhisattvas, the quick nature to overcome frustration. With this class, you just hear a sentence or practice a law, can also immediately enlightenment; like Mr. Hui Neng, only hear the phrase "Ung's headless, born of a miraculous child", or Mr. Ca Lettuce, see only the Buddha giving a lotus flower and immediately show enlightenment.
The reason for being so enlightened is because they have gone through many lifetimes and are about to be enlightened. Now they have the opportunity and the predestined relationship will immediately show, as if the flowers have been cultivated enough. , just waiting for the weather to bloom.
Listen to the Ton Mat group talking about these people: “The enlightened person has a self, the dharma does not practice meditation, which is Mahayana meditation. People who self-enlightenment in this past are pure capital, no negativity, full of wisdom and wisdom, that mind is Buddha, ultimately no different. Y according to this mind that meditation is paramount meditation, also known as Chon as the eight ".
Regarding the method of cultivation and the transmission of Mahayana meditation there are three ways:
- The first way: These are the types of samadhi which practitioners follow according to the Mahayana cultivating books, such as the Dharma of the eighteen, recitation of the three samadhi, the awareness of the eighty, the Senses of Surangama, etc.
- The second way: This style of meditation is not based on scriptures and texts, but only uses a short sentence, to refer to the teacher. In Buddhism, this style of meditation is called: "Regardless of the texts, the different teachings are passed on" (no written, non-Buddhist texts). Meditators only base on one statement that research until until enlightenment. This greed-saving work, sometimes meditates last for decades.
- The third way: With this way, we can hardly think of anything to discuss. In this way, when someone comes to pray for the Dharma, the ancestors do not use words but only use a gesture or a shout.
Like the Linji lineage, when someone came to pray, the Zen master only used sticks and screams.
Like the Threshold Line, the ancestors only drew animals, human figures, and swastikas that enlightened the disciples.
Like the Van Mon lineage, an ancestor said only one word, which made the enlightened religious person.
As if he only offered tea (Mr. Trieu Chau) or invited to eat rice, but the people who came to pray were enlightened.
There he again watched his shadow under the water and laughed, when he passed the bridge, immediately enlightenment (tigers tiu goi kim chi zhi), or heard birds singing on willow branches, or taking sticks to beat the soil to melt immediately. enlightenment.
It is a miraculous meditation-body, an outsider cannot think or discuss.
In order for the person to lead the way, the missionaries must meet the following three conditions:
- Know the root cause of the religious people.
- Know the weather at the right time to evangelize.
- Know which method is appropriate, among the three methods mentioned above. If the transmission method is incompatible, in a timely manner, then the meditator does not work.
Before we stop writing, we have the following comment that surely readers would agree: Our country used to be a country heavily influenced by Zen Buddhism, and Zen Buddhism is the most popular sect in the country. . Yet today, because of the changing times of history, Zen Buddhism is no longer transmitted in temples as well as in the people in a rich way like before.
So we hope that, from here onwards, thanks to the convenient transportation from one country to another, through cultural exchanges, and thanks to the spiritual training of Vietnamese Buddhists, Zen Buddhism will take back to the nuance of trade in Vietnam like the Ly and Tran dynasties.
