Lesson 4: Refuge Triratna.VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=THICH CHAN TANH. .
A. OPENING
Our Ta-Ba realm is a realm of ignorance and desire. We are sinking in the pool of tears of suffering and mud of desire, living in such a scene, we can hardly see the bright, peaceful shore to wade into. What a pity for our human condition.
But that's not our vow! We are, from beginninglessness, to the place where the source of our feet is so quiet, so clear Because of an involuntary thought, ignorance of delusion, so we are reeling in samsara, floating in the three realms of the six paths.
So, who among us does not want to get out of this dark, sorrowful realm, to return to the source of clarity and happiness?
But how to get out? Who will be the one who draws compassion to show us the way? Who has enough magical methods to help us out of samsara?
The wise and energetic great being is none other than Shakyamuni Buddha, the one who has attained birthlessness and immortality; and only his teachings can save sentient beings from impermanent suffering.
So then we still hesitate any more but do not take refuge in the Three Jewels.
B. BACKGROUND
I. IDENTIFICATION AND RESOLUTION
1. What is refuge?
Quy is returning; He is a refuge, Quy Y is to return to rely on the place where he was ignorant and distracted to leave, like a foolish child who left his parents to leave devastated, now knows the foolishness. due to the experience of suffering, returning to rely on the shadow of happiness and love of parents. The word Qui Y literally translates the Nam Mo meaning of Sanskrit. Refuge also means obedience or submission.
2. What does the Triple Gem mean?
The Three Jewels are the three valuable throne: Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.
In the world, gold, silver, ivory and fame are precious. But truth, gold and fame do not save people from misery, life, old age, sickness, death, but sometimes make people more miserable! And Buddha, Dharma and Sangha have the power to lead people out of the austerities mentioned above. Therefore, new people worship Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha to be the three noble persons (the Triple Gem).
a) Buddha: The Buddhist word transcribed by the Sanskrit Bouddha. The Chinese translate into Enlightenment; French translator is L'Illuminé. Those three words all mean the same thing: frustratingly enlightened fully in three aspects: self-discipline, enlightenment, and fullness.
b) Dharma: The Dharma is translated by the Sanskrit word Dharma. Dharma is the austerity method that Buddha developed to eliminate all ignorance, suffering and attainment of Buddhahood. The three sutras are collectively called Dharma.
c) Sangha: Sangha or Sangha is attributed to the Sanskrit Sangha; Chinese translation: harmony them, that is, a group of austerities of four coming up, living together in the same place, keeping the Buddha's precepts, sharing each other in a harmonious way what has been received , from matter to spirit.
3. What is refuge in the Three Jewels? Taking refuge in the Three Jewels is returning to rely on the three precious throne: Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.
Why take refuge in Buddha?
- Because Buddha is utterly wise, infinite compassion, boundless blessing, fullness of virtue;
- Because Buddha is the greatest guide, he has experienced himself outside the cycle of birth and death to witness the path.
Why take refuge in France?
- Because only the Buddha's method is fully capable to take us through the pit of suffering, to the shore of liberation.
Why take refuge in Sangha?
- Because Sangha was the one who sacrificed his family, money, fame ... to volunteer in place of Buddha to lead sentient beings on the path.
II. THREE BAMBOO TAM BAO
The Three Jewels have three problems:
- Homogeneous Triple Gem.
- Export into the world of the Three Jewels.
- The world abbot Tam Bao.
1. DONG BAO TAM BAO
a) The Buddha said , that is, all sentient beings together with the Buddhas have a wise nature.
b) The Dharma body , that is, all sentient beings and the Buddhas have the same compassionate and equal nature.
c) The Sangha Sangha , that is, all sentient beings and the Buddhas have a pure nature; the, rational harmony.
2. EXCITING WORLD OF TAM BAO
Export to the Triple Gem:
a) The worldly Buddha told the Buddha that Shakyamuni Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, the Buddhas of the ten directions, had liberated themselves from the constraints of the world.
b) Exporting the Dharma world , which is the Buddha's Dharma teaching, has the function of making sentient beings free from worldly attachments, such as the Four Noble Truths, the Twelve Causes and conditions, Six-Fold etc.
c) Exporting to the Sangha world , is only for the Sangha saints who have escaped from the worldly constraints such as Quan-Thế-Yin, Đại-Thế-Chí, Văn-Thù, Ca-Lầu, An-Nan etc ..
3. CENTER OF HEART maintenance
a) The worldly abbot of the Buddha told , for the relics of the Buddha, the Buddha image is made of metal carved with wooden objects, painted with earth, covered with cement, embroidered with cloth, or painted on paper.
b) The world abides by the Dharma teachings, which is only for the three canonical texts: the Sutras, the Law, the Abhidharma, writing or printing on paper, on cloth, on letting go of leaves, etc.
c) The world is the abbot of the Sangha , which is the monk's practice of righteousness, pure morality, and the statutory precepts in the present.
III. SAFETY REGULATION TAM BAO
After having understood what is the Three Jewels refuge, of course must practice that knowledge. Practicing the Three Precepts with respectful generals, obeying the Three Jewels, this is called taking the Three Refuge refugees.
1. Taking refuge in the Buddha: Every day we must remember to remember the Buddha, recite His name, contemplate His statue, devout devotion to pay homage to Him, and vow for life to follow His steps, It is the refuge of Buddha.
2. The refuge of France: Daily chanting of sutras, laws, treatises on black and white paper; early in the second day of elaboration, to learn the profound meaning of the Dharma, as well as possible, to know the meaning of recitation, nor is it in vain. When reciting the scriptures, our minds do not think of nonsense thoughts, do not remember unwholesome things, do not discuss plans for selfishness and suffering. We get rid of desire, the mind is lucid, peaceful, pure.
3. Refuge Increase: The world often says: "Trong Buddha, must be glass Increase". So, if we sincerely worship Buddha how much we have to be very revered. People who practice the Sangha refuge, whenever people see that their heads are square, have a genuine practice, uphold the precepts, then respect and respect as if they were representatives of the Buddha. Doing so is the Refuge Sangha.
In short, worshiping Buddha essence, Buddha statue, chanting, keeping the Dharma study world, respecting the true Sangha, that is the refuge of the Triple Gem, or in Buddhism.
IV. LY LY TAM BAO
Reason is within. Taking refuge in the Three Jewels means taking refuge in the Three Jewels in our hearts. If we only practice taking refuge, just following the external Triple Gem, but forgetting the refuge of taking refuge, that is, forgetting the Triple Gem within our minds, then we have not practiced the true meaning of the Three Noble Truths. Indeed, within our hearts there are also enough Triple Gem. We need to practice the taking refuge, or the three taking refuge: taking refuge in Buddha, taking refuge in the Dharma, and taking refuge in the Sangha.
1. Self refuge in Buddha: Self means oneself to one's own mind. Taking refuge in Buddha is one who returns to the Buddha with the clarity of his mind. Yes, everyone has Buddha nature, and everyone can become Buddha. That's what Shakyamuni Buddha taught. But that Buddha nature was deluded, delusion was covered. Hope is like a cloud, Buddha nature is like the moon. Clouds can obscure, but not destroy, the bright moon.
Even though our Buddha-nature is deluded, ignorance is still often hidden. So then why do we forget our Buddha nature, and just run after inviting Buddha outside; like the "death son" has a jewel, his parents have hidden it in a shirt he doesn't know, and begs everywhere!
2. Self-discipline of the Dharma: Self-discipline of the Dharma is to obey your Dharma nature. In the mind there are enough dharma of Compassion, Wisdom, Equality, Patience, Diligence ... We need to develop those qualities and act on them, obey them; so is taking refuge in the Dharma.
3. Taking refuge in the Sangha: Taking refuge in the Sangha is to obey the teacher in our hearts. The teacher in his mind is his virtue of pure harmony, just as the Sangha is the embodiment of external pure harmony. A long time ago, because I was in a delusion, I could not see the teacher in my heart.
In short, we have to rely on, to return to the Buddha in the mind is lucidity; with his Dharma the virtues of Compassion, Joy and Discretion, etc .; with his Sangha is the harmony, purity of oneself. So is the refuge of the Three Jewels.
V. KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
After we understand the Truth and the Refuge, we need to know through the ritual of taking refuge.
1. First, wash your body and mind to be clean
Refuge is the most important ceremony on our path of practice. It is a departure to the goal of liberation, so we cannot look down, celebrate indiscriminately.
When we want to take refuge, we have to dress appropriately, prepare a ceremony for the monks to come to the street, pay homage, and ask the monks to compassionate and impart the precepts to us.
Before the ceremony, our body and mind must be washed clean. I showered clean, dressed neatly. It is about the Body; As for Tam, we have to repent, for three karma be pure. Thanks to the cleansing both inside and out, we are worthy of receiving the noble noble dharma of the Three Jewels.
2. Vow
By the time we take refuge, we have to kneel; Following the instructions of the monks and nuns, they made aspirations:
- Disciple for life to take refuge in Buddha.
- Disciple for life to take refuge in France.
- Disciple please take refuge in the whole life.
After making the Quy Quy vow then, the vower believes that he has sowed the seeds of liberation, how will he reap good results is escaping three evil paths: hell, hungry ghosts, animals. Therefore, the refugee immediately said three more times:
- Disciple took refuge in Buddha, from hell.
- Disciple took refuge in France, from demonic ghosts.
- Disciple took refuge in the Sangha, from falling to animals.
The whole is Tam Quy and Tam Kiet.
To uphold his noble cause and uphold the faith on the path, the refugees strongly and sincerely voluntarily:
- Disciples take refuge in Buddha, vow for a lifetime without taking refuge in gods, deities, and demons
- Disciples take refuge in France, vow for life not to take refuge in paganism and heresy.
- Disciple took refuge in Sang, vowing for life not to take damage, evil party.
So the refuge ceremony is completed. The believer only has to do according to the words he has made his vow and has been sworn in to the Triple Jewel.
BECAUSE. BENEFITS OF TAM BAO TAM BAO
1. From straying astray into the darkness
As we saw at the beginning of this article, sentient beings are diving in the sea of misery, wandering in the middle of the immense darkness. In such a tragic situation, if we do not see the means to go, there are no masters to guide us, we will be reeling forever in the sea of samsara. That morning's goal is Buddha, those means are Dharma, and these mentors are monks. When we know there are such treasures that do not grasp, it is like a person who is about to drown and see the wooden raft passing by and foolishly push it away.
Refuge is a way of clinging to the three jewels that Buddha has created to save those who are about to drown in the sea of life as our whole.
2. When having taken the vow to take refuge, it is easy to keep the promise, because there is the proof of the Buddhas and the Sangha.
Someone said, "I worship Buddha, because I know that He is a wise being; I respect the Dharma because I know that the Buddha Law is capable of bringing people to liberation; Of Buddha. Knowing that is enough, need to make a vow to take refuge? "
That said is not enough to value the psychological aspect of the promise, the oath in front of others. When we have made a promise to someone and we swallow a promise, our souls feel uneasy and regretful. Having promised all the duty to fulfill the promise, if we break the promise, we will despise us. Especially when the promise was made in a solemn setting before the Buddha, on the witness of the Buddhas, under the witness of the monks, surrounded by the blessing of the body. of; vow in the context of that, of course we can hardly ignore the vow, or neglect it.
So we know the Three Jewels are precious, of course we have to take refuge in the Three Jewels and celebrate the solemn refuge ceremony solemnly.
C. CONCLUSION:
Advise followers to take refuge in both the rational and the diligent in taking refuge.
We have seen; Being a Buddhist, you have to take refuge. Refuge must be sufficient and rational. Do not completely depend on the outside but distracted inside. Nor should we completely respect our own self-respect and disdain outside. To take refuge, you must first solemnly take a refuge ceremony to mark your first step on the path of liberation. It was like seeing off a person taking a new assignment. But once he set foot on the road, he had to travel, determined to hurry to the destination, not to wait, turn around, or turn to another road. Having made a vow to take refuge without following the footsteps of the Buddha left, without looking into the example of the Buddha raised, not following the teachings but training the mind; not keeping the precepts, disobeying the monks' instructions, thus deceiving yourself and deceiving others,
On the contrary, if we take refuge and practice according to the vow, the path of liberation, though far away, will one day see the destination.
Please always remember the last words of Buddha: " Be diligent to liberate! "
