A. OPENING
During the French colonial period, because of the general destiny of the country, which was in decline, being overwhelmed by Western culture and paganism, Buddhism for the majority of the Vietnamese people as a subordinate, dependent religion, does not make any sense.
But if anyone goes deep into the history of Vietnamese Buddhism following the steps of the mission through the ages from when the people of Vietnam became a nation until today, they will see Buddhism holding an important position. together in the building of Vietnamese culture. It can be said without overstatement: Vietnamese culture is largely a Buddhist one. Drawing out the Buddhist nature in Vietnamese culture, the culture is very poor and superficial. The Venerable Venerable himself, in his book `` Vietnam History of Buddhism '' said it very well:  `` Thanks to the lucid spirit of the path, with the patristic industry of the ancestors, Buddhism has great merit. on the country's cultural history . ''
Today, in order to properly recognize the important role and historical mission of Buddhism in our country, as well as to add trust and enthusiasm to practice, to inherit the spirit '' '' of the religion that is passed on to future generations, we Vietnamese Buddhists need to know the history of Vietnamese Buddhism.
B. BACKGROUND
I. BUDDHIST BUDDHIST INTO VIETNAM
1. The path of introduction
Vietnam is located on the Indian-Chi-Na peninsula, between the two large countries, the two largest peoples in the world, the two bright civilizations of Asia, India and China. Because the country's position is located in the middle of the sea route to India from China, it has been greatly influenced by those two civilizations.
As for Buddhism, the introduction into Vietnam is also due to both roads: the sea from the south and the road from the north. Of the first four missionaries who set foot in Vietnam, all three monks were Indians, traveled by water to China to preach and stopped in Vietnam: Ma-Ha-Ky-Vuc, Khuong-Tăng-Hội and Chi-Cương-Lương.
The fourth missionary was Chinese, Mister-Uncle, who traveled down the road from the North. This is what proves that Buddhism enters Vietnam due to both the waterway and the road from the south to the north. But because our country was dominated by China for a thousand years, and then still depended on culture and politics, later on the mission from China to the main road.
2. The first import era
According to reliable historians, the first missionary to come to Vietnam (at that time the land of Giao-Châu) was Mâu-Bác, from the Ngô Ngô District (Ngô Châu now). After the Han-King Emperor's death (189) the Chinese were often chaotic, he followed his mother to stay in Giao Chau and spread Buddhism.
The second missionary who landed on Giao-Chau land was Khương-Tăng-Hội, who was originally from Khuương-Cư (Soadiane, India). His purpose was to go to China, but his great-grandfather often traded in Giao-Chau so He followed Giao-Chau to China. At that time, when China was in the Three Kingdoms period, he came to Dong-Ngo and was admired by Ngo-Ton-Quyen, took refuge with Him (229-252). Thus, Mr. Khuong-Tang-Hoi stopped at Giao-Chau around the beginning of the third century after the Western calendar.
Around the middle of the third century to the end of the third century, Giao-Chau welcomed two Indian monks, Ma-Ha-Ky-Vuc and Chi-Cuong-Luong, on their way to China. - their teachings, in the Qin dynasty (265-306).
Thus, it can be said that Buddhism was first introduced to Vietnam in the end of the second century to the third century, after the Western calendar.
3. The introduced sect
During the first period of the introduction of Vietnam, Buddhism was only vaguely seen in the country, there was no particular color and people were only exposed to Buddhism in the means of worship.
It took several hundred hundred years for Buddhism to gradually penetrate into the people and under the influence of Chinese Buddhism. One thing we are surprised is that, although Chinese Buddhism consists of ten sects, only Zen-religion is transmitted to Vietnam first and foremost. This ton was first introduced into Vietnam by Bhikkhuni Ni-Da-Luu-Chi (Vinitaruci). He is the disciple of mind transmission of the mind of the Three Patriarchs Sang-Xan, and that is the very first-generation Zen master of Vietnam.
In the life of the Duong dynasty (820), there was Vo-Ngon-Thong from China to evangelize, form the second Zen-religious sect; then the sects of Thao-Đường, Tào-Động, Lâm-Te etc ... in turn transmitted to Vietnam.
In summary, Buddhism was introduced to Vietnam, only Zen-religion is the most powerful influence.
II. BUDDHISM UNDER THE SECRETS OF SOUTHEAST (571-602) AND NORTH THE THIRD TIME (603-939)
Since Buddhism was introduced into Vietnam until the pre-Ly Nam-De period, counting over three hundred years (189-548), it is still in the embryonic stage. It was not until the Late Ly Nam-De (571-602) and Northern times (603-939) that Buddhism began to enter a prosperous period.
1. The first stage  - The spread of Zen-religion of Bhikkhuni Ni-Da-Luu-Chi and his Dharma Show.
At the end of Hau Ly Nam De's life, there was a Bhikkhu-Ni-Da-Luu-Chi in China (580) who brought Zen-religious propaganda into it, which was greatly admired by the Vietnamese. Therefore, for the first time, Vietnam was known to the Zen religion and the Bhikkhu-Ni-Da-Luu-Chi was the first one of Zen religion in Vietnam. After the Bhikkhu-Ni-Da-Luu-Chi, Mr. Phap-Hien was a disciple of the Bhikkhu-Ni-Da-Luu-Chi, who succeeded him and brought Buddhism into the people.
2. The second stage -  The influence of the three missions
At this point, Vietnamese Buddhism began to prosper. At that time, our country was dependent on Sui dynasty, King Sui-Sui, when our country was Buddhism thriving, so the king gave monks in our country five ark of offerings, and decreed. towers at Phap-Van Pagoda, Trung-Khanh Pagoda and other landmarks.
Sui later lost the throne (618) of the Tang dynasty, and King Duong-Cao-To also gave An-Nam five Xa-Lan balls and built a pagoda to build a tower.
Also during this period, Chinese and Indian missionaries, often borrowing from our country, traveled back and forth. While traveling across Vietnam they often stop for a few moments to lecture, so we also have a lot of good influence. Among those missions, the most telling are the following three:
a) The first group:  composed of Minh-Vien dharma teachers, Hue-Manh meditation-masters, and Non-Hanh meditation-masters, all Chinese.
b) The Second Delegation:  Composed of the Ðàm-Nhàn-dharma masters, Trí-Hoàng magician-wizards, and Tăng-Gia-Bạt-Ma (the two heads are Chinese and he follows the Tây-Trúc).
c) The third group:  consists of six Vietnamese monks who are Van-Ky meditation-masters, Moc-Xoa-De-Ba, Khuy-Sung shaman, Hue-Diem shaman, Tri-Hanh meditation-monk and Đại-Thắng-Đăng meditation teacher. The first four were Giao-Châu, two after the Ai-Châu (Thanh-Hóa, Nghệ-An now). They all went from Vietnam to the Dharma Bridge in Tay-Truc and passed away, mostly very early, in India or Sri Lanka.
3. The third stage  - The spread of Vo-Vo-Thong sect
In 820, our country was again a high-ranking Zen monk to evangelize and form a second Zen-religious sect called Vo-Ngon-Thong.
The surname is Trinh, from Guangzhou. As a child, he was religious and ordained as a monk at Song-Lam pagoda, in Vu-Chau land (Triet-Giang). His temper was calm, quiet but he understood everything, so the people at that time called Him Vo-Ngon-Thong.
One day he was praying to Buddha, met a Zen master who came to him and took him to look for the Buddha-father to attend. But when he came to Jiangxi, he heard that the Buddha passed away, so he went to ask a master for the Zen master's statue.
One day during the lecture, a monk asked the Bach-Tuong ancestor:
- What is the method of the Mahayana school?
Answer group:
- Center of the weak mind, Hue self-projection (that is:  if the mind is clear, the natural sun will shine ).
Hearing those sentences, Mr. Vo-Language-Thong immediately enlightened. He returned to Guangzhou, abiding at An-Hoa pagoda. In 820, he went to Vietnam to stay at Kien-So pagoda, Phu-Dong village (Bac Ninh) and sat on the wall all day to meditate. So for a few years without anyone knowing; Only the monk at the temple was Cam-Thành meditation-master knew that he was angry at Cao-Tăng, who achieved enlightenment in the Zen-religious sect, so he respected and worshiped as a teacher. He passed away very naturally, in 826 AD, after imparting his initiation to the Zen master Zen Master.
His Holiness, the Zen master, passed on his mind to the Thiên-Hội and created a tradition for the Faculty of Speech-Language (We will continue to study in the following kings).
In short, for a period of nearly four hundred years, from the Later Ly Nam-De dynasties (571-602) to the end of the third Northern period (603-939), the mission in Vietnam can be divided into three stages: the first, due to the merit of the Bhikkhu-Ni-Da-Luu-Chi; the second, by Chinese and Vietnamese missionaries, and the support of the Sui and Duong kings; the third stage, by the Vo-Vo-Thong sect.
III. BUDDHIST BELOW, TIME AND MONEY (968-1009)
1. General status of Buddhism in the two generations Dinh and Le
In these two kings, Buddhism was greatly developed. It can be said that Buddhism became unique. All culture, politics in the country, a large part belongs to monks, so Buddhism is easily popularized among the masses. Although Confucianism and Taoism have long been transmitted, it is not as influential as Buddhism. During the main dynasty, Mr. Ngo-Chau-Luu worked at Khuong-Viet Thai-su; among monks, Mr. Truong Ma-Ni became a monk and a sorcerer, Dang Huyen Quang, became a majesty of Pompons.
After the Đinh Dynasty lost the throne, Lê-Đại-Hành took the throne, quickly returned to the Song army (980) and won. During this period, monks increased their privileges; King Le-Dai-Hanh often summoned the High Priest to the court to discuss the affairs of the country and encourage the spread of Buddha-Dharma.
It is worth noting that during this period, after getting along with the Song Dynasty, the Dai-Hanh king sent an envoy to the Song Dynasty and requested the "Cuu Kinh" and "Great Tripitaka" to bring about the spread. This is the first time our country has publicly come to visit business in China.
Another thing worth remembering is that during this period, among monks there were two outstanding monks who had glorified the country for a while. Those are Mr. Khuong-Việt Thái-master and Mr. Ðề-Thuận meditation-masters.
2. Khuong Viet Thai-su
The surname Ngo, whose name is Chan-Luu, is from Cat-Lan village, abbot of the Buddha-Da pagoda. In childhood, he studied Confucianism, grew up to receive ordination with Van-Phong Zen-monk at Khai-Quoc temple. From there he specialized in reading Buddhist scriptures, understanding all the essentials of Zen-religion, the famous reputation in the country. When he was 40 years old, the Emperor Dinh-Tien-Hoang asked to go to the church. The following year, the king again appointed him as Khuong-Viet Thai-monk (Khuong Viet was the one who helped to repair the country of Vietnam).
By the time of King Le-Dai-Hanh, He was even more respected. How many mandarins and affairs of the country, the king often summoned him to ask. He had been in the court for a while and asked an old alibi to build a temple on Du-Hui Mountain. There, he opened a school to teach, many students came to study.
On the full moon day of February, the second Thuan-Thien reign of Ly dynasty, he called Da-Bao Zen-monk his loyal disciple to come, transmit the dharma-consciousness through the following verse, and then clasp his hands-an-course President.

He was 81 years old, and the fourth to be taught the mind of the Vo-Vo-Thong sect.
3. Ðo-Thuận meditation-master
His family Do, not clear where the original, from the childhood from childhood, life-world with Long-Tho Phu-Tri-Zen master. When the early Lê Dynasty became successful, he was often invited to court to discuss politics and diplomacy. King Dai-Hanh often called Ð-magic, but did not dare to call the name. He wrote very good poetry, and was often sent to respond to Chinese messengers.
The second Order of Hưng-Thống in the house of Tiền-Lê, he passed away, was 76 years old. He has made the book "Bodhisattva effect Samples-repentance", now transmitted. He is the tenth tradition-style life of the Bhikkhu-Ni-Da-Luu-Chi.
4. General comments about Buddhism in this period
The Buddhists of the Dominican and Pre-Le dynasties were privileged and monopolized, for the following reasons: monks were mostly Confucian scholars. Chinese characters were taught in Vietnamese before, but because there was no examination department, few people studied. Only Zen masters, because they needed to study Buddhism through the scriptures in Chinese characters, had to learn Confucianism a lot. The monks at that time, just enough Confucian, just understand morality but also have virtue, then of course in the king's respect respected, in addition to the people respected. Buddhism in this period was not surprising as well.
IV. BUDDHISM UNDER THE PHYSICAL (1010-1225)
1. Under the Ly-Thai-To reign
a)  King Ly-Thai-To and the situation of Buddhism in this life (1010-1028)
King Ly Thai To, whose name is Thuy, was Ly Cong Uan, an adopted son of Ly Khanh Van at Co Phap Pagoda, and received a teaching with Van Hanh Zen Master. After the death of King Le Ngon Trieu, he took the throne to the throne, taking the title Thuan Thien stationed in Thang Long (Hanoi). Ly Thai To was a devout Buddhist, so after taking the throne, he paid close attention to the spread of Buddhism. He built many temples and greatly increased them. Most noteworthy is that in 1019, he sent envoys to China to request business to bring in the Dai-Hung Institute.
This dynasty can be said to be the one in which Buddhism was most prosperous. The Zen masters at that time such as Mr. Van-Hanh, Da-Bao, Sung-Pham Zen masters were all famous monks whom the king was very respected. So, their mission is very effective. These monks all belonged to the two sects of Piā Ni-Da-Lưu-Chi and Vo-Tiếng-Thông.
b) Van-Hanh Meditation-Master
The surname is Nguyen, his name is not known what his name, the French ancient village. His family worship Buddha forever. He was exceptionally intelligent from an early age, studied all the three religions and mastered the teachings of the Buddha. When he was 20 years old, he went to school, and studied with him. He specializes in the practice of "General Tri Tam Ma". People often refer to his sayings as thunder. While King Dai-Hanh was still alive, he was often called into court to ask officials.
Thuan-Thien Ninth year (1018) He did not get sick anything passed away. His body was cremated and worshiped in the tower by the court and his disciples. Before he passed away, he did the following stanza:
Original:

Thinh think like the first open.

2. Under Ly Thai Ton's reign (1028-1054)
a) Situation of Buddhism under this king
Ly Thai Ton succeeded Thai To throne, taking the reign Thien Thien. He is also a devout Buddhist. After defeating the Chiem invaders in Hoan Chau land (Nghe An), Thai Ton established 95 temples to celebrate the inauguration ceremony, lowering the tax exemption for the people in the country for one year. In 1034, Thái Tôn changed the name to Thông Thụy, at that time Vietnam was given a Tibetan Tripitaka by the Song Dynasty and sent himself to our country to visit. This action had a positive influence on Buddhism in the country, and a good honor for the Ly court at that time.
From the time of receiving the Great Tripitaka of the Song Dynasty, the king of Thai-ton often came to listen to the Sutta and asked the Zen monk to the Zen master and proclaim himself a disciple. Later on, the king was taught the Dharma transmission by the Zen master and was the seventh person in the tradition of the Vo-Ngon-Thong sect.
In this life, there are many monks who are very helpful in spreading the Dharma, such as Hue Linh Zen master, Dinh Luong elder, Zen master and etc.
b) Hue Linh Zen Master
The surname Lam is a secular name, Khu, a native of Dong Phu Liet, originally a descendant of Lam Phu in Tra Son (now Ha Dong). He has a good appearance, speaks fluently, and has been known for good writing or good writing since childhood. When he studied Confucianism with extra time, he studied Buddhist scriptures. Nearly 70 years old, he studied with Dinh Hue Zen Master. Since then his practice has continued to improve. When the master gave the mind to the dharma, he traveled all over the world, then up to Mount Bodhi. Each time he sat in samadhi for at least five or seven days. The people at that time often called him "the living Buddha". The king sent many people to go to him to ask for help. After discussing the king, he was very respectful and appointed him to be the Interior patriarch of the monk and ordained at Van Tue pagoda near Thang Long citadel. One day in the inner palace, there was a vegetarian feast for monks, the king asked:
- Regarding the wishes of Buddha, scholars often quarrel. I want the noble people here, to show where I am, so I know what their education is like.
Hue Linh Zen Master immediately improvised the following stanza:
Original:

Listening to the verse, the king was very admired. At that time, many dynasties in the court and many scholars came to ask about morality and all worshiped him as a teacher.
In the reign of Thanh Ton, he was ordained as Ta Nhai Sangha. By the fifth Gia Khanh year (1063) He passed away. He has composed a few books: "The French suspected son, Dao Khanh Khanh Tan" but all were lost.
c) Meditation Lao-Zen master
He was headquartered at Trung-Minh Pagoda in Tien-Du district, a disciple of Da Bao Zen-master. After learning the path, he returned to the Tu-Son temple, famous reputation, the student crowded to more than a thousand people. His residence is Dai-Tong-Lam.
During the period of Thong-Thuy (1034-1038) King Ly-Thai-Ton came to visit him one day and asked him:
- How long does the monk come to this temple?
The Zen master read two sentences:
Original:

The King asked again: What does the monk usually do?
He read again:

After returning to the palace, the king planned to send the envoy to receive him into the court to be an advisor. The messenger arrived and he was already dead.
3. Under the Ly-Thanh-Ton reign (1054-1075)
a)  The situation of Buddhism  in this life
Thanh-Ton took the throne, changed his country name to Dai Viet and took the reign of Long-Thuy Thai-Binh. He was a very devoted Buddhist king. In the fifth Long-Swiss year (1059), he went down to build a pagoda to build a tower and cast a bell weighing 12,000 pounds in Bao Thien village, Hanoi province. That bell still remains today.
In this era, the Thảo Đường Đường sect appeared in Vietnam, transmitted by Mr. Thảo-Đường, his disciple Tuyet-Đậu Minh-Giac from China. King Ly-Thanh-Ton received a religious life with him, after he was ordained as the first disciple of Thao-Duong. The Wanderer School is the third Zen School in our country.
Ly-Thanh-Ton was a monk who was taught the Dharma, then Buddhism was at that time very prosperous and had great influence among the people.
b) Phai Thao-Duong
In 1069, King Ly-Thanh-Ton went to fight Champa. These prisoners, the king gave the officials in the court to serve as servants. Among the officials in the court, there was one monk. One day, the monk was away, and suddenly he saw his "continental copy" was repaired by a prisoner. The Sangha was shocked, bringing it to the king. The King asked for the name of the prisoner to ask, the medical response was very smooth, the commentary on Buddhist scriptures was very accurate. It turned out that he was a Chinese Zen master, followed his teacher through Chiêm Thành and was taken prisoner. The Zen-master is that of Mr. Thảo-Đường.
When knowing the whereabouts of Mr. Thao Duong, the Zen monk, Thanh Tong immediately ordained him as a Master, giving lectures at Khai Quoc pagoda in Thang Long citadel. Disciple came to ask for a lot of study. He established a sect called the Thao Duong sect.
3. Under the Ly-Nhan-Ton reign (1072-1127)
a) The situation of Buddhism in this period
Lý-Nhân-Tôn, although when he ascended to the throne of Lý-Nhân-Tôn at a young age, he was very intelligent and brave. He admires Buddhism, so in addition to the government work, he also takes care of spreading Buddhism-Dharma. He has put a high official in charge of all the temples in the country. He again appointed Dry Head meditation-monk to become a national counselor to advise on national affairs, such as HE Khuong-Viet, during the reign of Dinh and Tien-Le.
In parallel with the work of reviving the Buddha-dharma of the king, the Queen, also a powerful woman, has established more than 100 temples in the country.
In this life, there are many eminent meditation masters, before narrating books that glorify the history of Buddhism in the country such as Vien Vien Chieu-zen, Zen-Indian-Zen master

As a disciple, Mr. Dinh-Huong, a Zen teacher, studied Zen. He was very knowledgeable about the "Tam Quan" dharma in the Vien-Giac business, cultivated to attain enlightenment and was initiated by his master.
After he returned to Thang Long, erected a temple on the edge of the citadel and abided there. People from all over the world heard a great deal to attend.
He has composed the book: "Duoc Duoc Du Du Su Du", which discusses about 12 great aspirations in the Medicine Teacher. King Ly-Nhan-Ton gave the book to the envoys to China to offer to Triet-Ton King Tong. King Tong handed the book to the monks at General Quoc Pagoda to see if there are any places worth repairing. The Chinese masters saw and said to the Song king: "This is the great incarnation who was born in the South, explaining the sutras very sophisticatedly. We mortal monks do not dare add any more words!" .
King Song sharp copy for a copy, and the original returned to our king with many compliments. Mr. Vien-Chieu passed away in the sixth year of Quang-Huu year (1090) at the age of 92.
The following is his poem still handed down:

5. Under the Ly-Than-Ton reign (1128-1138)
Lý-Nhân-Tôn had no children, setting up a royal son's son Sùng-Hiền-Hầu to become crown prince, then ascending to the throne ie Thần-Tôn. In the fourth year of Thien Chu Bao Bao's reign (1136), the King became seriously ill, thanks to the cessation of Minh-Khong-Zen, so the king bestowed upon the Zen-monk become Quoc Su and established Linh-Cam Pagoda.
In this life, there are also many monks such as Minh-Khong Zen-master, Thong-Bien-Zen-master, Bao-Giam-Zen-master and especially one nun, daughter of a prince, that is Mrs. Dieu-Nhan. . This nun was ordained with the Chan-Khong meditation master, and was the first nun in the Bhikkhuni-Ni-Da-Liu-Chi school. In addition, during this time, there were many monks in the Vo-Ngon-Thong and Thao-Duong sect that opened the ashrams to teach students or go to travel, using magic to help the sick a lot.
6. Under the last kings of Ly dynasty: Ly-Anh-Ton (1138-1175), Ly-Cao-Ton (1176-1210), Ly-Hue-Ton (1211-1225)
a) Ly-Anh-Ton and this era
God Ton died, Crown Prince Thien-To ascended to the throne to take the emblem as Anh-Ton. Anh-Ton is a disciple of Khong-Lo meditation-master (Thao-Đường sect) and is taught the mind of dharma, which is the fourth disciple connecting the tradition of the Thao-Đường sect.
The famous Zen masters in this life are: Tri-Sailing, Am-Tri, Bao-Giam, Vien-Thong-meditation-master. Vien-Thong meditation-master was ordained a National Professor in 1143, died in 1151, at the age of 72 years old. He has authored the books that remain in this book:

In this life, although the king, the concubines and the royal court (such as Thai lieutenant Tô-Hiến-Thành, Thái Bảo Ngô-Hòa-Nghĩa) all devote themselves to Buddhism, the development was not special. to tell. The tide is going down, and Buddhism is going along.
c) Ly-Hue-Ton with this era
Prince Sam succeeded Cao-Ton, that is Hue-Ton. The Ly Dynasty came to this stage, so depressed. During the reign, the civil war, the king has no real rights, in addition to folklore nor peace. Therefore, Buddhism is also influenced.
In 1224, Hue-Ton was fed up with his life as a king, passing the throne to his 7-year-old daughter, a princess of Buddhism, Kim, Ly-Chieu-Hoang, and then became a monk at Chan-Giao pagoda, calling herself Hue- Quang dai-sư.
Ly-Chieu-Hoang passed the throne to her husband Tran-Canh. Ly Dynasty ended from there!
7. General comment about Buddhism in the Ly dynasty
If in China, the Tang dynasty was the most popular Buddhist life, then in Vietnam the Ly dynasty was the most popular Buddhist life.
For more than two hundred years, Buddhism held a unique position in all aspects: Ethics, literature, politics and diplomacy. Eight kings of the Ly dynasty worshiped Buddhism and many of them had become ordained. The monks in that king's life were high monks, great virtue, wise men, and held many important positions in the court. Not only that, they are eminent poets, talented diplomats and erudite educators. They devoted themselves to bringing their learning and possessions into the world to save lives, causing great prestige for Buddhism. They themselves indirectly rectified eloquently with their actions that: Buddhism is not cynical and feeble, but rather active, vigorous and saving life and has contributed greatly in the construction. water and people. Read the Buddhist history of the country to this point, . END=NAM MO SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA.( 3 TIMES ).WORLD VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST ORDER=GOLDEN AMITABHA MONASTERY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THICH CHAN TANH.AUSTRALIA,SYDNEY.11/1/2020.
