[XXVI - DISCUSSION OF THE MAGIC ( VARIETY )] 26 «Paṭihāriyakathā »
1. [227] 'The monks, there are three kinds of magic (transformation). What miraculous three?Miraculously miraculous, miraculous about knowing mind, wonderful about teaching.
'What are the monks, miraculously about miracles? Here, monks and monks experience different types of supernatural powers (supernatural powers); is a person turned into many, ... [and so as in Luan I d.527 to] ... he sent his body to fly far away to the heavenly realms Pham Thien. Hey monks, this is called magic about miracles.
'What are the monks, miraculous about knowing the mind * ? Here, the monks, thanks to the sign [like a posture, for example], one said: 'Your idea is like that, your mind is like that, your mind is like that' and even though he says a lot. Where, he said it was right and nothing else. Here there are people who do not rely on signs, but by listening to human voices or voices not of people, or of gods, [1] he said: 'What do you mean by your meaning like that, your mind is like that 'and no matter how much he speaks, he says it is right and nothing else. There are people who do not speak through looking at signs, not by listening to human voices or voices not of people, or of gods, but after listening to [2] clear words of understanding people 2 *, he said: 'Your will is like that, your mind is like that, your mind is like that' and no matter how much he speaks, he says it is right and nothing else. Here there are people who do not rely on signs, not by listening to human voices or voices not of people, or of gods, not by the clear words of the knowledgeable thinker, [228] but by understanding the mind of the person reaching the goal of not mindful and contemplating the object, he knows that 'this person when thinking about any object, will immediately focus on that object' he says: 'What do you mean by that idea? he is like that, his mind is like that 'and no matter how much he speaks, he says it is so and it is nothing else. Hey monks, this is called miraculous about knowing the mind.
* nđ: speak out others' thoughts.
2 * 'clear words of understanding thinkers ' translate Woodward, ibid , page 154. Vitakka-vicāra here means' when paying attention to its object, the mind begins to reflect on that object '.Woodward, ibid, footnote 6, page 154.
'And what are the monks, miraculously about teaching? Here, bhikkhus, some people recommend this: 'Use the mind like this, not like that; consider this, not like that; Give up this, do this, live in this. ' Hey monks, this is called magic about teaching.
Hey monks, these are three kinds of magic. * (A i 170).
* in these three categories, the Buddha was boring, rebellious , and disgusted by the first two types, because there were those who did not believe and used the magic of Gandhāra and Maṇika to manifest their divine powers and read others' minds. The Buddha only miraculously values teaching. Read Kevaddha, D i 214.
2. Exporting the cup * is successful ( ijjhati ): this is a divine power ( iddhi ). It is perverted (paṭiharati ) desire to enjoy the senses: so it is a transformation ( pāṭihāriya ). All who achieve that separation are pure in mind and unreasonable thoughts: this is a transformation through knowing the mind. That separation must be cultivated so, must be developed like that, must be made so rich: this is the transformation through teaching.
* Nekkhamma : no longer craving. Although derived from nir + v kram means renunciation , this word is always used as a counter-word for kāma . Read Nyanatiloka, Buddhist Dictionary , page 105.
There is no anger in success ... [and so with the remaining obstacles of 7 obstacles and opposing qualities, the four meditation realms, the four attainments of formlessness, eighteen realities of mindfulness, the four virtues Revealed, (but there are no four results) - Commentary I the d. from 36 to 40] ...
The path revealed arahant successfully ( ijjhati ): this is a divine power ( iddhi ). It metamorphosis (paṭiharati ) all gonorrhea: so it is metamorphic ( pāṭihāriya ). All those who have attained the path of arahant are pure in mind and unreasonable thought: this is a transformation through knowing the mind. The path of arahant must be cultivated like this, must be developed so, must be made so rich, contemplation must be established in accordance with such path: this is transformation through teaching.
3. Export cup successfully: this is the spirit. It transforms the desire for sensory pleasure: so it is a transformation. That spirit ( iddhi ) and that transformation ( paṭihāriya ) make the so-called transformations through divine powers ( iddhi-paṭihāriya ).
No success anger ... [and so on until ...]
The path revealed arahant successfully: this is a divine power. It pervades all gonorrhea: so it is a transformation. That spirit of divine power and transformation transformed the so-called transformation through divine powers.
