Là một Phật Tử mọi người chúng ta phải hiểu rõ lý nhân quả để biết rõ mình sẽ đi về đâu và đang làm gì với cuộc đời hiện tại. Mọi Phật Tử phải tin và hiểu Lý Nhân Quả. Càng hiểu và tin sâu bao nhiêu thì chúng ta mới vững lòng tin để thực hành lý Nhân Quả trong đời sống được bằng không thì khó thoát được trò chơi lục dục củ Ma Vương.Trong giáo lý của đạo Phật có rất nhiều trọng tâm để tham học và tu tập như là: Từ - bi - hỷ xả; Phật tánh; vô minh tứ đế; bát chánh đạo; ngã; ngũ uẩn; bát nhã; Bồ Đề..v..v.. nhưng chỉ có trọng tâm NGHIỆP là tinh yếu nhất, quan hệ nhất cho đời sống cá nhân nói riêng, cho đạo pháp chúng ta nói chung. NGHIỆP là nền tảng mà trên đó giáo lý căn bản của PHẬT GIÁO được xây dựng nên. Cho nên phải biết NGHIỆP đóng một vai trò quan trọng như thế nào trong đạo Phật.
Vậy hễ TU PHẬT - bất luận theo pháp môn nào - cần phải thấu triệt và hoàn toàn tin tưởng vào NGHIỆP BÁO tức là LUẬT NHÂN QUẢ.
Đức Phật có dạy rằng: "...Thuở xưa từ đời quá khứ cách đây rất xa chúng ta đã tạo ra Nhân quả rồi. Những Nhân quả ấy dồn dập như sóng biển, dẩu cho trải qua bao nhiêu kiếp cũng không hề thất lạc. Đúng kỳ, chúng hiện ra cho chúng ta hoặc thưởng hoặc phạt tùy theo chúng ta đã làm lành hay làm dữ, làm phải hay làm quấy.
Về Nhân quả báo ứng, ai làm nấy chịu, chẳng trốn tránh hay san sớt cho người khác được..." (Soạn tập bá duyên kinh).
Có người cho rằng: nếu đã gọi là "luật" thì tất phải có một đấng thiêng liêng nào, người nào hay xã hội nào đặt ra. Quan niệm như thế có nghĩa hơi nông cạn. Luật ở đây là "luật thiên nhiên", luật tự nhiên nó bao trùm cả vũ trụ, vạn vật chứ nó không nằm trong phạm vi của loài người hay một xã hội nào đó. Người ta có thể khám phá ra luật ấy chứ không thể nào đặt ra luật ấy được. ĐỨC PHẬT - Ngài chỉ là người đã dùng TRÍ HUỆ sáng suốt của Ngài để vạch cho mọi người thấy rõ ràng cái "luật Nhân quả" đang điều hành trong vũ trụ mà thôi.
NHÂN QUẢ: Nhân là nguyên nhân; quả là kết quả. Quả là cái quả do mầm mống phát sinh, Nhân là nhân lực phát động, quả là sự thành hình của năng lực phát động ấy. Nhân quả là một định luật của tất cả mọi sự vật. Nhân quả - tuy ngó thấy đơn giản nhưng nếu đi sâu vào sự vật để mà nghiên cứu thì lại càng thấy rất phức tạp và khó khăn bởi vì trong vũ trụ, mọi sự vật không phải đơn thuần, tách rời từng mòn mà có sự liên quan mật thiết với nhau, xoắn kết lấy nhau, đan lát vào nhau, ảnh hưởng lẫn nhau, tương phản lẫn nhau, thừa tiếp với nhau... hãy gọi đó là trạng thái chằng chịt giữa sự vật, đạo Phật thường dùng từ NHÂN DUYÊN nghĩa là mọi sự vật có ra là nhờ nhân duyên với nhau, nương tựa vào nhau hay tương phản nhau mà thành chứ không có một cái nào đứng biệt lập được. Trong sự phức tạp của sự vật ấy mà tìm ra cái Nhân chính của QUẢ hay cái QUẢ chính của NHÂN không phải là việc dễ. Do đó mà nhiều người không dụng công suy nghĩ, tìm tòi sâu xa mà đâm ra sanh lòng nghi ngờ thuyết Nhân quả. Ta thử tìm hiểu xem: hạt lúa có thể là cái NHÂN cho những hạt lúa vàng là QUẢ trong mùa gặt sau nhưng nếu ta đem hạt lúa ấy nấu ăn, như thế cái NHÂN chính có thể thành ra QUẢ này hay QUẢ khác nếu nhân sự khác nhau; muốn hạt lúa giống của mùa này thành hạt lúa vàng của mùa sau thì cầ phải có đất, nước, ánh sáng, không khí, thời gian, phân tro... muốn cho hạt lúa giống ấy thành máu huyết thì phải nấu, phải ăn, phải có bộ máy tiêu hoá. Cho nên nói NHÂN QUẢ tách riêng sự vật ra khỏi cái chung cùng toàn thể vũ trụ lấy một khía cạnh nào đó để quan sát nghiên cứu chứ muốn nói cho đúng thì phải dùng hai chữ NHÂN DUYÊN, cũng như một nhà khoa học khi muốn nghiên cứu một bộ phận nào bên trong cơ thể thì thường cắt xén bộ phận ấy ra khỏi cơ thể để nghiên cứu cho dễ chứ thật ra bộ phận ấy không phải biệt lập mà trái lại nó có liên quan mật thiết đến toàn bộ cơ thể.
Cho nên khi chúng ta muốn có ccái kết quả như thế nào đó thì phải hội đủ các nhân duyên thì kết quả mới như ý muốn. Có người muốn kết quả như vậy nhưng lại không hội đủ nhân duyên như thế nên kết quả không đạt do đó họ đâm ra nghi ngờ sự đúng đắn của "luật Nhân quả"; trong Nhân có quả, trong quả có Nhân. Chính trong NHÂN HIỆN TẠI đã có chứa cái QUẢ VỊ LAI và trong cái QUẢ HIỆN TẠI đã có hình bóng NHÂN QUÁ KHỨ cho nên Phật nói "NHÂN QUẢ" thông cả ba đời".
Một sự vật mà ta gọi là Nhân là khi nó chưa biến chuyển hình thành ra cái quả mà ta quan niệm; một sự vật mà ta gọi là quả khi nó biến chuyển hình thành ra trạng thái mà ta đã quan niệm. Mọi vật đều có Nhân và quả: đối với quá khứ thì nó là quả nhưng đối với tương lai thì nó lại là Nhân. Nhân và quả đắp đổi nhau, tiếp nối nhau không bao giờ dứt. Nhờ sự liên tục ấy mà trong một hoàn cảnh nào người ta cũng có thể đoán biết quá khứ và tương lai của một sự vật hay một con người. Kinh Phật có dạy: "...Muốn biết cái Nhân thì cứ coi cái quả đời này đang thọ, muốn biết cái quả về sau như thế nào thì cứ xét cái Nhân đang tác động trong hiện tại..."
Sự phát triển mau hay chậm từ Nhân đến quả của mỗi người, sự vật không tiến triển trong cùng một thời gian; vì lý do mau chậm trong sự phát hiện của cái quả mà chúng ta không nên nóng nảy cho rằng cái luật Nhân quả không hoàn toàn đúng khi thấy cái Nhân mà ta đã gieo chưa hình thành nên cái quả. Vậy mỗi chúng ta phải kiên nhẫn mà gieo cái Nhân lành trước để một ngày kia chúng ta đón hưởng cái quả tốt mà chúng ta đã có công trình đặt hạt giống ngay từ bây giờ.
Mỗi Phật tử chúng ta đã thấu triệt luật Nhân quả tức là đã hiểu và tin; hiểu rõ ràng; tin sâu đậm rằng tất cả những vui, buồn, sướng, khổ... ở kiếp sau là quả của những Nhân (nghiệp) từ kiếp này.
Mặt khác, những điều mà thế tục gọi là hạnh phúc hay bất hạnh đều do duyên sanh hoặc những liên hệ giữa người và cảnh, người và người, người và vật...cũng do duyên sanh.
Phật nói : "Chư pháp duyên sanh" mà nói duyên tức nói nghiệp: cha - con; vợ - chồng; anh em; bè bạn..., nếu không phải là "duyên" thì là "nợ". Theo thế tục mà nói: "duyên" tức là hạnh phúc, là "thiện duyên" - theo Phật giáo mà nói: "nợ" tức là bất hạnh theo thế tục mà nói, còn theo Phật giáo mà nói: "nợ" là "ác duyên" (như Axà Thế vương là nợ của vua Tần Bà-Sa-la). Nếu hiểu biết triệt để điều này thì dù bất cứ ở trong hoàn cảnh nào, người Phật tử chơn chánh vẫn bình thản họăc tưởng quả lành hoặc thọ quả dữ, hưởng hay thọ cho xong kiếp này và đừng gieo Nhân ác thì mới hy vọng kiếp sau được "rảnh rang trọn vẹn" "Bồ Tát sợ Nhân-chúng sanh sợ quả": Bồ Tát sợ Nhân nên không gây Nhân ác; chúng sanh sợ quả chớ ít sợ Nhân nên vô tình hay cố tình mà gây Nhân ác. Nhân ác hiện ra quả ác. Một khi quả ác đã hiện ra liền lo sợ, chẳng khác nào "kẻ muốn trốn nắng lại chạy ra dưới ánh mặt trời".
Trong khắp cõi Ta bà thế giới này chẳng có một nơi nào để cho ta trốn được luật Nhân quả được. Nên biết "trông sâu khó bứng" chẳng khác nào tung quả bóng, tung mạnh dội mạnh, tung nhẹ dội lại nhẹ.
Vì:
- Sân hận, oán ghét, tà dâm là Nhân; điạ ngục là quả.
- Tà kiến, ám muội, làm ác là Nhân; súc sanh là quả.
- Tham lam, bỏn xẻn là Nhân, ngạ quỷ là quả.
- Ngã mạn, cống cao là Nhân; A tu la là quả.
- Giữ tròn năm giới là Nhân; thân người là quả.
- Tu hành thập thiện là Nhân; thân trời là quả.
- Chứng ngộ "CHƠN KHÔNG" là Nhân; thinh văn là quả.
- Thấu pháp "Thập nhị Nhân duyên" là Nhân; Duyên giác là quả.
- Tu tròn sáu độ là Nhân; Bồ Tát là quả.
- Bình đẳng (vô thượng - chánh đẳng - chánh giác) là Nhân; Phật là quả.
* Niệm Phật Adiđà là Nhân; Tây phương cực lạc là quả.
Cho nên nếu tin mà không tin sâu đậm, còn khởi lòng nghi thì không bao giờ đạt tới CỬU CÁNH được cả.
Khi nói rằng người Phật tử đã tin sâu đậm vào luật Nhân quả thì người Phật tử ấy phải biết chắc rằng: chết không phải là hết vì chết đây liền sanh kia, chết kia liề sanh đây, sanh dưới một hình thể khác hoặc xấu hơn hoặc tốt hơn hình thể cũ tùy theo NGHIỆP LỰC của mình (Cũng gọi là SINH TỬ BIẾN THỨC -kinh Kiến Chính) - tức là tùy theo sức dẫn dắtcủa cái mghiệp do THÂN KHẨU Ý tạo ra trước đây; sức dẫn dắt này đưa ta vào một trong saú lục đạo (Trời -người - A tu la - ngạ quỷ - súc sanh - địa ngục) trong kinh gọi là PHÂN ĐOẠN SANH TỬ nghĩa là sanh ra và chết đi có từng phần, từng giai đoạn một, khi thì làm người, khi thì làm thú. Đó là nói về hạn phàm phu không tu hành hoặc có làm dữ, hoặc có làm lành. Bằng như có tu hành mà vẫn chưa liễu sanh tử tức là chưa ra khỏi TAM GIỚI như bực nhi thừa và quyền thừa Bồ Tát khi thì sanh lên trời, khi thì trở lại trần gian thì gọi là BIẾN DỊCH SANH TỬ. Quyết tâm tu hành mà vẫn không hiểu thế nào là "phân đoạn sanh tử" hay "Biến dịch sanh tử" thì vẫn còn triền miên lăn trôi trong Tam giới. Có rất nhiều sự tích chứng minh là luật Nhân quả là bất di bất dịch (Sự tích Tỳ kheo ni Bảo Liên Hương cáo đồng thoái hoá; ông lão đắc quả A la hán) và đến như đức Phật - một đấng đại từ đại bi, công đức vô lượng vô biên, một bậc thầy cuả Trời và người mà còn phải trả quả thay! huống hồ là ai! chuyện kể rằng:
"Một thời gian nọ, khi Phật đang ngụ ở Trúc Lâm tịnh xá gần thành Sa duyệt, bỗng đâu một mũi kim thương hiện ra sừng sững trước mặt Ngài. Ngài hiện hình lên không trung, mũi kim thương cũng bay lên theo; Ngài trở xuống tịnh xá; mũi kim thương cũng bay xuống theo. Thấy thế Phật bèn nói với mọi người hiện diện tại đó cùng với Thiên long Bát Bộ rằng:
- Kim thương này là quả báo đời trước của ta. Vậy mọi người hãy an lòng để ta trả quả.
Phật bèn đưa chân mặt ra, kim tương đâm xuống chân Phật, lún xuống đất, rung động cả vũ trụ. Mọi người thấy thế lấy làm ngạc nhiên và xin Phật giải rõ. Phật nói: "trong một tiền kiếp xa xưa, thật là xa ta là một vị Chúa tàu chở 500 người đi buôn, ra biển để tìm báu vật. Bỗng nhiên đang đi ngoài khơi, có một kẻ trong bọn ấy sanh tâm muốn giết hết tất cả để đoạt sản vật, ta liền đâm nó chết. Nay ta phải trả cái quả ấy".

Nười phàm mắt thịt chỉ thấy sự kiết hung trước mắt chớ đâu biết được Nhân quả đời trước, Nhân quả đời sau. Bà họ Trương (1) ấy nhiều năm tinh tu một sớm chết thảm: hoặc giả do sự khổ đó mà tiêu được ác báo Tam đồ sanh về cõi Trời. Nếu trong hiện đời bà ấy có Tín sâu và Nguyện thiết thì bà cũng có thể vãng sanh về Tây phương. Bởi chúng ta không có tha tâm, đạo nhãn nên không dám ức đoán hay quyết đoán chắc rằng bà có vãng sanh hay không.
Nhưng có một điều mà chúng ta dám quả quyết là: làm lành tất được quả lành, làm dữ phải mang quả dữ. Đây là quả báo của nghiệp ác đời trước-nếu ta làm lành mà mang quả dữ-chứ chẳng phải là quả báo của nghiệp lành đời này. Còn làm dữ mà được quả lành - đó là quả báo của nghhiệp lành đời trước; còn nghiệp ác đời này nếu hiện đời chưa trả kịp thì chắc chắn đời sau sẽ phải trả chớ có mất mát đi đâu.
Các người thấy bà lão chết khổ như thế liền nghĩ lầm rằng: việc lành không dám làm, bởi làm lành chẳng những không được phước mà lại còn mang lấy khổ. Nghĩ như thê các người mới nghi ngờ, sợ hãi. Nhận thức cơ bản về Phật giáo.
A. Dẫn nhập
Phật giáo (PG) được khai sinh từ chiếc nôi thành Ca Tỳ La Vệ (thuộc nước Ấn Ðộ bây giờ), trải qua hơn 2.500 năm lịch sử, đầy những thăng trầm, có lúc tưởng chừng như đã biến mất hẳn ngay trên bản địa, Phật giáo vẫn tồn tại và phát triển rộng rãi khắp năm châu. Hiện nay, sự thành tựu vượt bậc của khoa học cùng với tư tưởng tiến hóa của nhân loại đòi hỏi thẩm định lại giá trị của nhiều tư tưởng triết học xưa nay; và đương nhiên, những tư tưởng mang tính phi lý, lạc hậu, phản khoa học đều phải tự đào thải trước những văn minh tiến bộ của loài người. Thế mà tòa nhà cổ 25 thế kỷ của PG vẫn tồn tại cùâng với năm tháng thời gian, sừng sững như cây đại thọ giữa núi rừng trùng điệp. Ðiều này chứng minh rằng Phật giáo đã toát ra một sức sống mãnh liệt bắt nguồn từ một giá trị tinh thần phong phú. Tinh thần ấy chính là sự thể hiện giáo pháp trong mỗi đời sống con người. Ðể có thể khái niệm được ý nghĩa về tinh thần Phật giáo, chúng ta có thể liên hệ mấy đặc tính sau đây:

Ðiểm căn bản nhất mà chúng ta nhận thấy được ở Phật giáo, vị giáo chủ không phải là một thần linh, không phải là một Thượng đế đầy quyền uy thưởng phạt, mà là một con người thật sự như bao người khác. Tên Ngài là Sĩ Ðạt Ta (Tất Ðạt Ða), tiếng Phạn là Siddhàrtha. Ngài thuộc giai cấp Sát Ðế Lợi, dòng dõi vua chúa, con của Vua Tịnh Phạn và Hoàng hậu Ma Da. Ngài sinh ra, lớn lên, đi học; vợ Ngài là Công chúa Da Du Ðà La, con Ngài là La Hầu La. Thấu rõ những nỗi thống khổ sinh, già, bệnh, chết…, chứng kiến những lầm than cơ cực của dân chúng trước những bất công của xã hội Ấn thời bấy giờ, Ngài đã từ bỏ gia đình, vợ con, một mình ra đi tìm phương giải quyết. Sau những tháng năm học đạo cùng với những đạo sĩ nổi tiếng bấy giờ, kết quả ấy cũng không giúp được cho vị đạo sĩ trẻ tuổi thông minh Sĩ Ðạt Ta giải quyết những vấn đề bức xúc trong lòng. Cuối cùng, Ngài đã tự quyết định tự mình tham cứu. Suốt 49 ngày tham thiền nhập định dưới cội bồ đề, khi sao Mai vừa mọc, Ngài đã thấu đạt được chân lý, rõ được chân tướng của vạn pháp, Ngài đã giác ngộ thành đạo, hiệu là Thích Ca Mâu Ni.
Sự kiện trên đây đã hình thành một khái niệm về tính nhân bản của Phật giáo, con người là trung tâm điểm của Phật giáo, hay nói một cách khác, không có nhân loại thì Phật giáo không hiện hữu trên cuộc đời này.
Trong thế giới quan Phật giáo, chủng loại được chia thành 6: Thiên, Nhơn, A tu la, Ðịa ngục, Ngạ quỷ, Súc sanh. Trong sáu cõi ấy, con người được ca ngợi là hội dủ điều kiện tốt nhất để đạt đến cái quả vị tu chứng trong Phật giáo. Phật giáo giải thích rằng chúng sanh ở cõi Thiên khó nhận thức được chân tướng khổ đau, vì cuộc sống của họ quá ư sung sướng. Trái lại, ở các cõi A tu la, Ðịa ngục, Súc sanh, Ngạ quỷ, chúng sanh quá si mê ngu dốt trong hoàn cảnh tối tăm đọa đày nên cũng không dễ gì nắm bắt được giáo nghĩa Phật Ðà. Duy chỉ có ở cõi Nhân, bản thân con người cùng hoàn cảnh (là điều kiện thích ứng dễ dàng khơi sáng) nhận thức được những khổ đau của cuộc đời và có khả năng khơi sáng ngọn đèn trí tuệ nơi chính tấm thân nhỏ bé này.
Trong quan niệm Phật giáo, con người là chủ nhân của mọi hành vi của chính bản thân mình ở cả ba thời quá khứ, hiện tại và vị lai, là vị Thượng đế duy nhất toàn quyền thưởng phạt cho chính cuộc đời mình; ngoài mình ra, không bất cứ ai hoặc thần linh nào khác có khả năng đưa mình lên thiên đàng hay vất mình xuống địa ngục. Kinh Pháp Cú, câu 345, Ðức Phật dạy rằng: “Chỉ có ta làm điều tội lỗi, chỉ có ta làm cho ta ô nhiễm, chỉ có ta tránh điều tội lỗi, chỉ có ta gội rửa cho ta. Trong sạch hay ô nhiễm là tự nơi ta, không ai có thể làm cho người khác trở nên trong sạch”.
Lại nữa, Phật giáo luôn luôn đề cao nỗ lực và ý chí của con người. Tinh tấn là một trong những đức tính quyết định việc thành tựu đạo quả Bồ đề, bến bờ giác ngộ chẳng bao giờ có dấu chân của biếng lười và bạc nhược. Với những tâm hồn khát khao tự do tuyệt đối, dốc hết sức bình sinh cùng với sự hiểu biết chánh pháp một cách chân chính, mỗi chúng ta chắc chắn sẽ đạt được kết quả tốt đẹp trên bước đường tu tập. Bằng ngược lại, cho dù ngàn vị Phật dang tay tế độ cũng không làm sao đưa ta thoát khỏi biển trần lao đầy thống khổ này.
Ngoài ra, Phật giáo còn đề cập đến những trường hợp của những thời kỳ không có Ðức Phật ra đời, có những con người tự lực, tự vận dụng triệt để ý chí và khả năng của chính mình trong quá trình tư duy, chiêm nghiệm và tu tập đúng đắn, quán tưởng và thấu rõ lý vô thường của vạn pháp, vẫn có thể bừng sáng được chân lý. Ðức Phật công nhận những người này là Bích Chi Phật. Tính nhân bản được thể hiện mạnh mẽ ở điểm này. Ðây là một đặc điểm ưu việt của đạo Phật mà chúng ta khó tìm thấy ở một giáo lý của bất cứ tôn giáo nào khác, một đấng giáo chủ lại đề cao khả năng của con người một cách khách quan như vậy. Xuất phát từ tính nhân bản này, nhân cách con người được tôn trọng triệt để trong Phật giáo: quyền sống, quyền tự do, quyền bình đẳng… đều có một giá trị đích thực. Phần này, chúng ta sẽ bàn thêm ở sau.
Ðiều đáng nói nhất về khả năng của con người mà Phật giáo luôn nhấn mạnh chính là trí tuệ. Ðó là khả năng tối cao của nhân loại, là di sản vô cùng quý báu mà bất kỳ ai nếu biết vận dụng và phát huy đúng đắn đều có thể tận diệt mọi khổ đau, đạt đến bến bờ hạnh phúc. Ðiều này đã được minh chứng cụ thể qua đời sống của Ðức Phật cùng những vị tiền nhân kế thừa trong lịch sử đạo Phật. Ðồng thời, Ðức Phật đã tuyên bố: “Tất cả chúng sanh đều có khả năng thành Phật”. Trong lịch sử tiến hóa của nhân loại, từ cuộc sống thô sơ lạc hậu của thời xa xưa cho đến hôm nay, những phát minh khoa học cùng những thành quả vinh quang của nó đã đưa nhân loại đến thời kỳ vàng son của tối tân hiện đại. Kết quả ấy có được là do từ khả năng khối óc của con người. Dù vậy, theo phân tích của Phật giáo, khả năng đó chỉ mới là giới hạn của một phần trí tuệ, hay nói một cách khác, con người của khoa học chỉ mới vận dụng được cái trí sáng thế gian của mình, chưa phải là trí tuệ của mỗi con người như Ðức Phật đã chỉ rõ trong giáo điển, thuật ngữ đó tạm gọi là Trí tuệ Bát nhã, và chính trí tuệ ấy là chiếc chìa khóa vàng duy nhất để mở cánh cửa vô sanh của Niết bàn tịch tĩnh.
Tóm lại, đối với Phật giáo, con người vốn là một chúng sanh ưu việt, có rất nhiều tiềm năng phi thường; nếu chúng ta khéo triển khai thì không gì không thực hiện được trên cõi đời này. Như vậy, ta có thể nói rằng Phật giáo là Phật giáo của con người, xuất phát từ Ðức Phật Thích Ca, Ngài là đấng Giác Ngộ nhưng Ngài là một con người; Ngài đã cất tiếng nói và có một đời sống rất người, và vì con người mà khai thị chân lý, hướng dẫn con người đến đời sống thực sự an vui.
II- Bình đẳng
Chúng ta biết rằng Phật giáo đã ra đời trong một hoàn cảnh vô cùng phức tạp của một đất nước mà trong đó, đời sống con người phải chịu nhiều bất công trong chế độ phân chia giai cấp lâu đời của xã hội Ấn thời bấy giờ. Giai cấp Bà La Môn tập trung số người tu của 62 đạo phái khác nhau, chủ trương công việc lễ nghi, tế tự; giai cấp này chiếm vị trí tối cao. Kế đến là giai cấp Sát Ðế Lợi, tập trung dòng dõi vua chúa, là giai cấp nắm quyền điều hành xã hội. Giai cấp thứ ba là Tỳ Xá, bao gồm những người bình dân. Ða phần còn lại thuộc giai cấp Thủ Ðà La, họ làm những nghề hạ tiện, cũng gọi là dân nô lệ. Hai giai cấp Bà La Môn và Sát Ðế Lợi thuộc giai cấp thống trị, Thủ Ðà La và Tỳ Xá thuộc giai cấp bị trị. Bốn giai cấp này theo chế độ thế tập, cha truyền con nối. Vì vậy, người dân nô lệ thì cứ đời đời làm nô lệ, tạo thành một xã hội bất công.
Ngay trong buổi hoàng hôn tăm tối của một thực trạng như vậy, một hiền nhân thuộc dòng dõi vua chúa đã dũng mãnh gióng tiếng chuông tiên phong phá tan bóng đêm của xích xiềng nô lệ và bức tường phi lý của phân chia giai cấp bằng một châm ngôn vĩ đại: “Không có giai cấp trong dòng máu cùng đỏ và dòng nước mắt cùng mặn”. Lời tuyên bố hùng hồn ấy của Ðức Phật là nền tảng để hình thành một hệ thống giáo lý, mà trong đó tính bình đẳng được thể hiện trọn vẹn cả về phương diện lý thuyết lẫn thực tiễn.
Theo Phật giáo, mọi sai biệt trên thế giới này đều tùy thuộc vào các nhân duyên mà sinh khởi; cũng vậy, sự khác nhau về địa vị, hoàn cảnh giàu sang hay nghèo khổ, ngu dốt hoặc thông minh… tất cả đều hoàn toàn do hành vi tạo tác của mỗi con người chứ không phải do tự nhiên hay được sắp đặt theo bất kỳ một thông lệ hoặc quy định nào. Trên tinh thần này, sự phân chia giai cấp trở thành phi lý và vô nghĩa. Việc Thái tử Sĩ Ðạt Ta từ bỏ ngôi vị đế vương, quay lưng với tất cả vinh hoa phú quý, khước từ mọi đặc ân cao tột dành cho giai cấp vua chúa, một thân độc hành với chiếc áo thô sơ, đầu trần chân đất, vân du đây đó… đã thể hiện tinh thần bình đẳng tuyệt vời của Ngài. Và cũng chính Ðức Phật, con người với đời sống giản dị khiêm tốn ấy, đã thể hiện lòng bình đẳng trong suốt cuộc đời giáo hóa chúng sinh. Ngài rải tình thương vô biên xuống tất cả muôn loài một cách công bằng vô phân biệt. Từ hạng người cùng đinh như gã gánh phân, thợ cạo tóc cho đến những người giàu sang phú quý, từ những hạng người thấp hèn ti tiện như gái giang hồ cho đến các bậc vua chúa quyền uy, Ðức Phật luôn thương yêu, chân tình giúp đỡ, khuyên dạy để họ nhận thức được chân giá trị của cuộc sống và tự thăng hoa tâm hồn, đạt đến an lạc hạnh phúc. Lòng bình đẳng ấy không phải dừng lại ở nhân loại mà lan tỏa đến muôn loài vạn vật. Ngài luôn dạy rằng tất cả sinh vật đều có cùng tâm lý tham sống sợ chết, vì vậy không vì lý do gì mà ta nỡ cướp đi mạng sống của kẻ khác, như vậy nghĩa là không bình đẳng. Tâm trạng buồn nhớ mẹ của một chú cừu non lạc đàn chẳng khác gì sự đau buồn của một người mẹ phải chia lìa với con thơ bởi một nguyên nhân nào đó. Và vì vậy, sinh mạng của một con vật cũng quý như bất kỳ sinh mạng của một ai. Với quan điểm này, trên bước đường du hóa, có lần Ðức Phật đã tự tay bế một chú cừu non lạc đàn tìm về với mẹ. Và cũng chính Ngài đã lên tiếng giải thích và vạch rõ những ngu xuẩn của bọn người vì mê tín dị đoan, làm lễ tế thần bằng cách hiến dâng những con thú sống, để cứu lấy con vật vô tội thoát khỏi cái chết hỏa thiêu đau đớn chỉ vì một sự tin tưởng mù quáng.
Trong giáo điển, Phật giáo quan niệm rằng tất cả mọi loài chúng sanh, từ con người cho đến các sinh vật nhỏ bé côn trùng đều tiềm ẩn một khả năng phi thường như nhau, đó là khả năng thành Phật (Phật tính). Nhưng do các đặc tính cố hữu ở mỗi loài, việc triển khai khả năng ấy tùy đó mà khó dễ, nhanh chậm khác nhau. Ðiều này có thể tóm ý trong một câu kinh: “Ta là Phật đã thành, chúng sanh là Phật sẽ thành”. Ðây là nền tảng để hình thành tính bình đẳng triệt để trong đạo đức luân lý Phật giáo.
III- Từ bi
Từ bi là chất liệu không thể không có trong Phật giáo. Từ thường cho vui, Bi thường cứu khổ. Ðó là trọng trách thiêng liêng mà Phật giáo đã mang trên mình đi suốt 25 thế kỷ qua, bằng mọi cách để thực hiện ở bất cứ nơi nào. Và chính vì sứ mệnh cao cả này mà đạo Phật đã tồn tại trên một lịch sử lâu dài của loài người, và phát triển cũng chỉ bằng chất liệu yêu thương mà hoàn toàn không sử dụng một bạo lực bạo quyền, không dính dáng đến lưỡi gươm mũi súng. Chất liệu yêu thương của Phật giáo như dòng suối mát lịm ngọt ngào đã làm cho vạn vật xanh tươi, cỏ cây đâm chồi nẩy lộc. Cũng vậy, Từ bi đã hiện hữu giữa cuộc đời, là thần dược xoa dịu những niềm đau nhân thế, hàn gắn những rạn vỡ tình người, xua tan những oán hờn thù hận; và hơn thế nữa, giải quyết những căn bản khổ đau của kiếp phù sinh, đưa ta đến an vui trọn vẹn.
Theo nghĩa căn bản, “Từ” nói cho đủ là Từ năng dữ nhất thiết chúng sanh chi lạc, Bi năng bạt nhất thiết chúng sanh chi khổ, vắn tắt “Từ năng dữ lạc, Bi năng bạt khổ”, có nghĩa là lòng Từ thường mang niềm vui cho tất cả chúng sanh, lòng Bi diệt mọi khổ đau cho tất cả chúng sanh. Ở lãnh vực tình cảm, lòng thương yêu của Phật giáo có thể sánh với lòng mẹ thương con bao la rộng rãi. Tuy vậy, khi đi sâu vào ý nghĩa của nó, chúng ta thấy rằng lòng Từ bi là một tình thương vượt qua mọi ranh giới, mọi quan hệ và bao trùm lên trên tất cả muôn loài. Trong thế gian, thương yêu bao giờ cũng đi đôi với hạnh phúc; tuy nhiên, những loại tình cảm ở đời chỉ hạn cuộc trong một quan hệ, một đẳng cấp, một chủng loại, một phạm trù nào đó. Khi vượt ra ngoài phạm trù ấy, lắm khi chúng ta lại đối xử xa lạ, hững hờ, kỳ thị với nhau, thậm chí còn dẫn đến chống đối, tàn sát lẫn nhau một cách khủng khiếp.
Trong khi đó, Từ bi vượt lên tất cả mọi tình thương hẹp hòi của thế gian, không bến bờ, không biên cương, không hạn định. Lòng thương yêu ấy tuyệt nhiên không chứa đựng bất kỳ ý niệm kỳ thị nào, dù cho đó là một tín đồ Phật giáo hay không phải. Ðối với Phật giáo, tất cả chúng sanh đều là bạn hữu, và mọi nơi chốn trên thế gian này đều là nơi chôn nhau cắt rốn, là quê hương xứ sở của mình. Lòng thương vô cùng ấy tựa như ánh mặt trời tỏa sáng khắp không gian, bao trùm muôn loài vạn vật, chẳng phân biệt đây hay kia, thân hay sơ, bạn hay thù, giàu hay nghèo, sang hay hèn, người hay vật.
Từ ý nghĩa này, Phật giáo đã có một tinh thần khoan dung, cảm thông và tha thứ. Chúng ta đang sống giữa một thời đại mà quyền lực và danh vọng đang khống chế con người, tham vọng nhân loại bùng vỡ một cách cùng cực, chiến tranh liên tục xảy ra, những cuộc chạy đua kinh tế, chính trị, quân sự đang phô bày khắp nơi trên thế giới, lửa hận thù tràn ngập khắp hành tinh. Thảm trạng này đang là cơ hội đưa nhân loại đến vực thẳm của diệt vong. Chính ngay lúc này, Từ bi là chất liệu rất cần thiết cho cuộc đời; và chỉ có vận dụng lòng thương yêu ấy của Phật giáo, chúng ta mới thật sự có đủ năng lực dập tắt ngọn lửa chiến tranh và hận thù đang ngút ngàn giữa buổi hoàng hôn của thế kỷ 20 này.
Ðức Phật dạy: “Hận thù không dập tắt được hận thù, chỉ có tình thương yêu mới dập tắt được hận thù, đó là định luật của ngàn xưa”.
IV- Vô ngã
Nhận xét về thế giới sự vật hiện tượng, Phật giáo khẳng định rằng mọi sự vật trên đời đều không có một tướng trạng cố định, tất cả đều luôn luôn biến đổi, chuyển động không ngừng; hay nói cách khác, vạn pháp luôn luôn đang trôi chảy. Trong khi đó, nhận thức thông thường của chúng ta tưởng chừng như mọi sự vật đang thực sự hiện hữu và cố định; kỳ thực, tất cả đều đang chuyển động một cách vi tế mà ta khó nhận rõ được. Nhưng nếu bình tâm và chịu khó quan sát, ta có thể hiểu được điều này; chỉ cần nhìn vào các sự vật quen thuộc nhất trong đời sống thường nhật như cái bàn, căn nhà v.v…, ta sẽ nhận thức được ý nghĩa ấy. Cái bàn khi mới được đóng thành, nó rất mới; nhưng qua một thời gian, nó đã trở thành cũ. Và cứ thế, theo thời gian, nó cũ dần và cuối cùng có thể chỉ còn lại những mảnh vụn. Tất cả các sự vật cũng đều cùng tuân thủ theo một cách như vậy, ta có thể nói rằng tất cả tướng trạng của sự vật đều là tạm thời; và vì luôn chuyển đổi, nên sự vật mà ta nhận biết được chẳng qua cũng chỉ là một chuỗi thay đổi liên tục của vô số tướng trạng từ mới đến cũ, từ trẻ đến già, từ sanh đến diệt… Phật giáo tạm phân quá trình vận động ấy thành 4 giai đoạn “sanh, trụ, dị, diệt” hoặc “thành, trụ, hoại, không”. Như vậy, theo Phật giáo, tất cả các sự vật, hiện tượng trên thế giới này đều hoàn toàn không có một cái chủ tể nhất định, luôn luôn chuyển động. Và vì vậy, tất cả đều vô ngã, nghĩa là không thật có một tướng trạng nhất định, bất di bất dịch. Ðây gọi là Vô ngã tính.
Liên hệ đến bản thân của mỗi người, vì không thấy rõ được sự thật của tướng trạng này, không nhận biết được sự giả hợp của ngũ uẩn tạo thành tấm thân này; nên ngay từ lúc lọt lòng mẹ, một cái tên gọi cùng với nhận thức sai lầm về cái Tôi đã tạo thành một ngộ nhận căn bản về sự hiện hữu và giá trị của một con người. Từ đó, tính chấp thật và sự ích kỷ hình thành; đây chính là giềng mối của bao nỗi thống khổ mà chúng ta đã cưu mang suốt cả kiếp người. Chính ảo mộng về một cái Tôi và những cái Của Tôi đã đưa đến thảm trạng chiến tranh, hận thù cấu xé lẫn nhau.
Phật giáo đã soi sáng chân tướng của vạn pháp bằng ánh sáng của chân lý vô ngã. Sự soi sáng ấy không nhằm mục đích thỏa mãn tri thức của nhân loại, mà nó mang ý nghĩa trình bày một sự thật về tướng trạng của con người và thế giới, nhằm mục đích xây dựng cho nhân loại một nhận thức đúng đắn hướng đến một nếp sống cao đẹp, đầy tình người. Thật vậy, một khi chúng ta nhận thức được bản chất thực của tấm thân ta đang mang giữ giữa cuộc đời này, thấu rõ được cái ta gọi là Ta, là Tôi, là Của Tôi, chỉ là những gì rất mong manh, không bền chắc, luôn biến chuyển. Khi ấy, bức tường thành của ích kỷ hẹp hòi mới thực sự sụp đổ, ranh giới của chủ nghĩa cá nhân mới bị xóa nhòa, thành trì của bảo thủ mới thực sự bị phá vỡ, lòng bao dung vị tha sẽ bừng sáng trong tâm hồn mỗi con người, nhân loại xích lại gần nhau để mỉm cười, thương yêu và cùng sống hòa ái với nhau trong tinh thần khoan dung và tha thứ, sẵn sàng quên đi những lầm lỗi mà chúng ta đã từng gây tạo cho nhau. Hạnh phúc thực sự hiện hữu ngay trên quả đất này.
Tóm lại, tinh thần Vô ngã vị tha là một trong những điểm quan trọng khiến Phật giáo phát huy và tồn tại khi đi đến bất cứ một quốc gia nào. Chính điểm này là một trong những căn bản tạo nên mạch sống cho Phật giáo tồn tại cùng với lịch sử tiến hóa của nhân loại, và bao giờ Phật giáo cũng luôn hiện hữu chỉ vì hạnh phúc và an sinh của loài người. Với tình trạng hiện thời của thế giới, tiếng chuông báo động của các nhà khoa học về các mối nguy cơ của trái đất thân yêu đang gióng lên liên tục, sinh mệnh của nhân loại đang bị đe dọa bởi quá nhiều nguyên nhân cũng do chính mình gây tạo. Ngồi lại với nhau trong tình thương yêu, đoàn kết liên hiệp trong cùng một chí hướng là điều quan trọng trong việc giải quyết các vấn đề trên. Tinh thần vô ngã vị tha, lòng từ bi, sự bình đẳng và tôn trọng lẫn nhau là nhân tố cần thiết để thực hiện được điều ấy.
C. Kết luận
Những điều vừa trình bày trên đây: Nhân bản, Bình đẳng, Từ bi, Vô ngã là những trọng điểm được đề cập trong Phật giáo, nhưng đó chính là những yếu tố cần thiết của con người nếu muốn tạo hạnh phúc thật sự cho chính mình và thiết lập một nền hòa bình thực sự cho nhân loại. Như vậy, chúng ta có thể nói rằng, Phật giáo là Phật giáo của con người, nhằm giải quyết những vấn đề cơ bản nhất của con người. Mặc dù đối tượng của Phật giáo là tất cả chúng sanh, nhưng con người là trung tâm điểm, là đối tượng duy nhất để mang bức thông điệp trao cho cuộc đời, là loại chúng sanh có khả năng tốt nhất để thực hiện bức thông điệp ấy. Thực hiện bức thông điệp ấy có nghĩa là phải thực sự vận dụng được những tinh hoa Phật giáo vào trong đời sống và tâm hồn của chính mình.Mặc dù đời sống luôn biến đổi theo dòng chảy của thời gian, nhưng trong sự mong manh phù du ấy của cuộc đời, ta vẫn luôn nhìn thấy được một điều gì thật dễ thương, thật ý nghĩa, thật thú vị giữa trần gian mộng mị.
